  • Next stop, Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. If you're seeking solitude and beautiful desert landscapes, this is the place to come! We set up the Airstream at Twin Peaks Campground and head out for a short dog-friendly sunset hike. Bri gets more than she bargained for and we quickly learn just how tough she is (or isn't). The next day, we head out to explore the 21-mile scenic Ajo Mountain Drive where we learn a little bit about the Organ Pipe cactus. The hike to Arch Canyon Trail is supposed to be an easy to moderate 2-mile round trip trail, but somewhere along the way, we ended up scrambling to the top in an attempt to see the arch up close, a task which proves to be much more difficult.

    all your videos are growing on me. i am a floridian, and have a 2005 airstream motorhome which i adore. we keep her in tennessee as it is easier to access the country than from south florida. so many beautiful places to see in this wonderful country.my wife is foreign born, and so far we have hit 29 states together, not all in the rv though. am envious that you did this at your age. we started traveling around 43 years old, as this was when all our children were grown. retired at 58 and love it, but wish i had the cajones to do it earlier. there just are not enough hours in the day, much less days in the year to absorb all the beauty that the earth offers. enjoy!

    I grew up in the desert area in the southwest. When it rains you smell the creosote bush and it just takes your breath away. I pull the branches off and put them in water to bring out the smell through out the house. And yes I have been bitten by many cactus. The desert offers many edible plants both to eat and for medicine, if you know what to look for.

    • @EmbracingDetours
      @EmbracingDetours  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      We grew up where the green grass grows (who's singing Tim McGraw now?), so the desert took us a bit to get used to but it's definitely grown on us. Indeed, there's usefulness in the most unlikely of places if you know where to look!

    I had a run in with that cactus a few weeks ago at Joshua Tree. I had my hiking boots on and stayed on the trail still got one in the ankle used a comb to get it out. It was painful. I got a lot of hate from passers by because they thought I was off the trail. It was discouraging how mean people were so I feel your pain. Safe travels

      Birkenstocks have already been replaced, can't live without them! They are the most comfortable sandal I've ever owned, and I feel like I'm actually not damaging my feet when I wear them unlike a lot of other sandals/flip flops. Thank you for your concern during the COVID crisis. We are well and holed up in a FHU private campground for the foreseeable future while we figure out what the future holds. Thank you for the well wishes, all the same to you!!

    I’m from upstate New York and I am used to lush green valleys and tree covered mountains. I have visited Phoenix on business trips and have never been impressed with the desert. However, my daughter has moved out west and I visited her in St. George Utah and found the red rock desert area quite beautiful. With her move we are planning to buy a motor home and make the trip out and travel around the northwest and southwest. I am enjoying your videos immensely.

    Oh my ... oh no ... ouch ... oooch ... I think I hate the desert ... dry ... prickly ... venomous ... hot ... rocky ... dusty ... Sorry, I know it has its charms and beauty, but I'm especially partial to greenery, and lush grasses and flowers that don't BITE!!! Lol. Thank you for braving the harsh landscape to share those awesome views. Also, thanks for the access tips. Shoe MIA? Oh well, you didn't need those sandals anyway. I like remote campgrounds and sounds like you hit upon a jewel. I guess we can develop a taste for almost anything, and I hope to taste the desert too some day. Beautiful park. I used to work the border there. So many trails and things to see. A good friend of mine, Chris Eggle, was killed in the line of duty there by cartel sicarios. Hence the visitor center is named after him. Lots of fond memories there.

    Since we're not full timers we have a freeze dryer at home and bring almost all of our main meals as freeze dried packs when we travel. Then you only need hot water and a stove so no electricity needed, which can help when boondocking as well as save a bunch of money. They also weigh almost nothing compared to fresh meat or veggies. We DO buy local produce though to go with what we carry. I live in the mountains now but lived in the desert much of my life, I like the desert too, but only in the cooler months!

    • @joycemoses2411
      @joycemoses2411 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Joseph Brown We thought about a freeze dryer. Do you have the one that is an oil-free pump? Have you ever dehydrated foods?

    • @JosephBrown83805
      @JosephBrown83805 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Joyce Moses, hi Joyce. We have the Harvest Right, but didn't spring for the very expensive, like $1,200.00 and up oil less pump. We haven't had any real issues with the, uses oil pumps. We've had ours for a couple of years now they didn't have the oil less pumps then anyway. It works great and we have used it many times. Rehydrating food is a bit of a guessing came with some foods but with most it is no issue. The weight savings and packing options are a big plus. Back to the oil vaccum pumps, just never buy one except form Harvest Right if you ever needed too.

    • @joycemoses2411
      @joycemoses2411 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JosephBrown83805 Thank you Joseph! I am always afraid that I won't dry the foods enough and poison the family. My husband has Celiac Disease (body cannot tolerate wheat) so eating out for us is not an option. The freeze drying option seems more safe than dehydrating. Your thoughts... Thank you!

    Beautiful! Stunning shot of the arch with the moon above it! I miss the travels with my parents when my Dad travelled for Montgomery Ward Field Engineering. They had a 30' Holiday Rambler. When Dad worked in Houston, Mother, my younger sister and I would head south on the weekends - we live in Ft. Worth. Daddy would have the trailer hooked up and we'd go to Galveston. At that time, back in the 80s, there was an rv park where you could park on the beach!! It was great being about 40 ft from the surf! Sadly, that park is no longer there.
    Your videos are such a joy to watch! Thank you so much for sharing!!

With the overnight camping closures we’ve really been thinking about full-timers like you guys. Hopefully the private parks keep their prices in line and you can find places to stay. Fortunately, we have holed up in a nice private campground with a reasonable rate in a large enough city that we have access to supplies and medical care if needed. We hoped that we could provide a little comic relief (with the whole cactus in the toes thing) during these uncertain times. Stay safe out there and hank you, Bob 🤗

    • @EmbracingDetours
      @EmbracingDetours  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, Shayne! We bought the trailer used and the previous owners had put up the paper towel holder, we absolutely love it!!! It's screwed into the overhead cabinet and doesn't allow the paper towel role to free spin and unravel, it has some sort of ratchet system that only allows it to roll an inch or so at a time and then stops. It works perfectly. I did a quick Amazon search and am almost positive this is the exact one we have: amzn.to/3b9tqod
      Glad you enjoyed the cactus in the toe interaction, so glad we happened to have the camera with us when that happened! We laugh at ourselves every time we watch it 🤣

      We didn't reserve a spot until we arrived at the campground. NPS requires you to reserve/pay online at this park, you cannot pay for a site at the ranger station or kiosk. It may have been the time of year or we may have just gotten lucky, but it's probably best to look online before arriving. Thanks for watching 🙂
