  • After the success of Super Mario World, the chubby plumber wouldn't see a main series console release until 1996. In the meanwhile, Nintendo played around with the franchise, releasing the SNES classic Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. As one of the most beloved games of all time, does Super Mario Advance 3 do the original title justice? Watch and find out.

    I'd just like to say: there's a reason there is a save system.
    This game is very long, I'll admit, but you're meant to do, say, 2 worlds in one sitting. Trying to get through an entire game in one sitting is most likely not what the developer intended.

    This is random, but I was obsessed with Shy Guys back in the day, and while playing this game I came up with a system dictating how you were allowed to kill them based on how appealing their color was to me.
    Purples you could kill by any method
    Yellows could not be hit with eggs, but could be stomped or eaten
    Greens could only be eaten
    Reds couldn't be killed at all.

    One major problem with the graphics of the GBA version is that there is no red tint to the shine of the hidden red coins. Unlike in the SNES version, one without any prexisting knowledge of the red coin locations would have to grab every single coin to make sure all 20 are collected. One with a trained could in the SNES version avoid wasting time collecting all of the coins by noticing the ones with a slight red shine as they spin.

    • @tech6hutch
      @tech6hutch 8 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    I feel like whatever the game lacks in setting variety, it makes up for in enemy variety. Almost every single level introduces some kind of new enemy (or even friendly!) character, and they're all really well-drawn and have interesting takes on the mechanics. I love, for example, the baseball-themed enemies with gloves and bats who will catch your eggs and hit them back at you. I love the Fuzzies that make Yoshi trip out on LSD. I love the level with the line of Ghost Shy Guys in the ceiling, passing along bombs that they will toss down at you. I love the special Dragonball Z Lakitu that literally shows up for only one level in the game to throw Spirit Bombs at you. There's just so much _personality_ to the enemies in this game, it made it really fun and compelling for me back in the day, because I was always wondering who or what weird new thing I'd run into next.

    Dude, if it takes you twenty minutes to beat a level in this game, something has gone very wrong with your playthrough. Also honestly I found the flowers to all be in pretty obvious spots, and in the case of the SNES version the red coins actually DON'T look the same as regular coins, they're subtley different.
    A good tip as well is to wait til the very end of the level to use your +10 or +20 stars items, that way you can afford to take a few extra hits.
    Normally I find your videos pretty good, but a lot of the complaints about this game are either just not true or have super easy fixes.
    Personally I consider this game the pinnacle of both the Mario AND Yoshi series.

    I know this is an old video but I have to disagree with a lot of what was said. It's a matter of preference but the soundtrack is not bad at all. Levels are big but there's so much do find that I never get bored. Red coins are not exactly like the yellow ones (and there's an item that makes them completely red). Flowers are usually in very obvious spots and +10/+20 items can be used to help achieve 100 points. Extra levels are not unlocked when you finish the game, they're unlocked when you achieve 100 points on every stage of a given world. SMW does not have 96 levels, there are 72 levels but some have more then one exit (the number at the save selection screens shows how many EXITS you found, not levels). Yoshi's Island have 60 levels considering extra and secret levels.

    • @viljami.haakana.laulut
      @viljami.haakana.laulut 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In fact, extra levels are unlocked when you get at least 800 total points on the other levels in the world. On SNES that means getting 100 % on all the other levels, but on the GBA, if you beat 6-8 you'll get the six GBA exclusive Secret levels which will allow you to unlock the extra levels even without getting 100 % on all others, as any points you've missed on the others can be added by beating the secret level with enough points to make up for that.

      This is one of the first ROR videos, but the absolute oldest of all, the ROR on SMB1 (NES vs GBC), while it’s not one of the most poorly-aged videos we’ve seen, its biggest problem that makes it show its age is a “Yeah, I said it!” yell to the people that aren’t fans of a New Super Mario Bros. sequel, as if it were an underrated gem, when there are far better Mario games, even Super Mario Bros. 1 (NES/SNES/GBC/GBA/VC). But credit where credit is due, it’s ironically funny. So the problem is pretty minor, meaning it’s a nitpick and not like Fawful’s Minion when he demonized the hatedoms of over-praised Sonic games like Sonic Lost World and Sonic Forces in his remade video of greatest Sonic games.

      ***** Well I remember plenty of people criticizing how the DS version kinda neuters the controls because Nintendo replaced the analog controls with a D-pad and a run button ( the stylus controls aren't much better either), which honestly doesn't come close to analog control. Even on the 3DS you're still limited to the 8 directions that were programmed. Also the button layout makes pulling off certain moves in the original alot harder because know you need to perform tricks while simultaneously holding the run button. Now for me and others, a remake that messes up the controls to that degree can't redeem itself to be better regardless of the content.
      Now that's not to say the DS version doesn't have it's upsides, the camera's much better and the graphical facelift is pretty impressive for the DS ( but they honestly a bit look too pixelated and jagged ), but those changes really don't compensate for the controls hor me ( which is kinda fair since controls are really one of the most important parts of a game when compared to extra content).
      Now what I stated before doesn't mean that people aren't allowed to like the DS version or even prefer it over the original, I'm just bringing up how even though the controls are really the one thing wrong about the DS version, it really is something that can legitimately make it or break it for people. The DS version would've been perfect if it released for the 3DS ( Like they did for the N64 Zelda titles and Star Fox 64, where the Circle pad could at least emulate analog control a lot better to where its not a major issue like it is here.

      There were a lot of differences he didn't mention at all, which I found surprising given what I expected this video to be about. Here are some examples:
      - World 4-4 doesn't have that middle ring after the first section in the SNES version (similarly in 5-7 there is one less middle ring in the SNES version)
      - In the SNES version, once you get the key and enter the locked doors with the bonus battle (vs. Bandit), you cannot re-enter until you replay the level (whereas in the GBA version you can re-enter the door to faceoff with Bandit as many times as you want - this is how it should've been originally imo)
      - The level select map is very different
      - The world score (i.e. 8:49 in the video) is not present at all in the SNES version
      - Some levels have different designs
      - Glitches were patched from the SNES original which allowed you to carry giant eggs to other levels or glitching out the screen by throwing an egg at a message block
      - Some graphics have been altered (such as the tape "X" on sealed doors)

    I got to say after watching your review video that your points made sense! Especially for those of us who played Super Mario for decades, and somehow discovered Yoshi's Island, it marks a departure from the whole Super Mario Vs. Koopa and Princess Rescue Format. I found it refreshing with cuteness overload from the shy guys trying sooo hard to be human or natives! All overall, I am glad to have seen your video by chance, and your review is definitely appreciated! :)

    just the fact that you have all the games grouped up in a single handheld system should make all the Mario Advance games an immediate Remake, with the originals only standing up for collectionists. It's still worth watching your videos to get a review of the game and being filled in with the differences between original and remake, though, good entertaining and educational value.

    I like the original more because the graphical effects, like the fuzzies on "Touch Fuzzy, Get Dizzy", look so much better. I also prefer Yoshi's original sound effects over his Yoshi Story voice. Yoshi being silent sorta makes me emphasize with him more. Reminds me of those "Mindy and Buttons" segments from the Animaniacs cartoons.

    18:24 - 18:42: To be fair, Donkey Kong '94 (for the gameboy) ALSO came out before Yoshi's Island, so Mario might have been taken to the Big City, then back to the Mushroom Realm during the events of Donkey Kong '94.

      ExoParadigmGamer Regardless, people are making headcanons and timelines based on evidence given from canon Mario games. I might as well consider Donkey Kong Circus canon, as well as Donkey Kong '94. However, DK94 and DK Arcade are two entirely seperate entities, based on Dafawfulizer's Mario Timeline Theory, in which since Cranky is the original DK, that would mean, Mario is not the original Jumpman, but is actually his father.
      However, if I were to make a timeline, The Arcade DK comes before Yoshi's Island, then New Yoshi's Island, Yoshi's Island DS, Wrecking Crew, Donkey Kong '94 (because DK Jr. made an appearance along side the Red-Tie wearing DK), Donkey Kong Jr, Mario Bros (in which Bowser sends monsters to gum up the plumbing as a distraction to the Marios), and Super Mario Bros (where Mario and Luigi noticed that the Kingdom is in danger).

      +Robert Walker Mario is Jumpman. Donkey Kong 94 for the GameBoy is an extension of Donkey Kong for the arcade, and it shows modern designs of Pauline and Mario, which means Mario and Jumpman are the same person. The reason why original Donkey Kong age to Cranky Kong, while Mario remains the same age is because Nintendo breaks continuities in their games.

Also the crying is less annoying. The game sounds nicer too. (Mostly). In defense of the SNES version. You can see the game way better. Unless The Gba version is played on a GBA SP or DS. (The DS has room for GBA game cartridges) in The SNES version, there are more glitches. And the game on the gba has a smaller screen where you can focus more.

There were a lot of underrated Mario games in the past like Yoshi's Island (GBA & SNES), the Mario vs. Donkey Kong series (pre-Tipping Stars), Mario Bros. (GBA), Mario & Wario, Donkey Kong Country 3 (SNES), the Super Mario Land trilogy (especially the sequels), Hotel Mario (in a so-bad-it’s-good way) and many others.

    Actually there is a MAJOR difference in the GBA version that makes it somewhat superior to the SNES. After defeating Bowser you unlock 6 hidden levels that were not present at all in the original version and they all do things that you never really did outside of said levels and they also bring back elements that really only originally occurred once like the Car form and enemies like Barney Bubbles, Harry Hedgehogs, Spikes, Pyro Dangles, Boo Men Bluffs, Grim Leechers, Grunts, Stretches and a new enemy entirely called the Biting Bullet Bill. The enemies that I mentioned are extremely rare and otherwise appeared only once or twice in a single level.

      @ExoParadigmGamer  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do know about the extra levels, and I'm pretty sure I mentioned them in the review. It's definitely something that the GBA version has that the SNESTER version doesn't, but seeing as I thought the game's length was pushing it to begin with, I figured it hypocritical to use that as a noteworthy addition or improvement. Obviously, I'm in the minority on this game in general, so if that makes the difference for you, then sure. It's a worthwhile addition to the GBA version that makes it potentially more worth picking up than it's 16 bit cousin.
