      At least the graphics (their style and execution) of the late 20th Century Super Mario 2D games (all versions, NES to the least extent only because, well, they were less powerful consoles depending on their times, but still, Mario 3 for the NES does NOT look far behind from its other versions) like the Super Mario All-Stars and Super Mario Advance tetralogies knew how to make even that moment look appealing (depending on the person)!

    *UPDATE:* Yes, I know that Nintendo released SMA4 on the Wii U Virtual Console on January 22nd, 2016. I also know that this port of the game includes the e-reader levels. Doing this just now prevented a massive amount of comment spam.

      +ExoParadigmGamer Yeah, you should do a followup thing to review the E-Reader levels. But so far... I've been enjoying them. It's kind of a nice feeling to play these things finally. Since I had a few of these levels when I was a teen.... But yeah, I wasn't able to track many down. I think I got like one pack or something. Not to mention the MASSIVE amount of Japan only levels.

    Aside from a lack of save feature, my biggest gripe with the NES version of "Super Mario Bros. 3" is the fact that Luigi ends up becoming a palette-swap version of Mario, considering the fact that this game did come out after "Super Mario Bros. 2", in which he was given his taller and thinner appearance we all know and love.

    • @FullArcher05
      @FullArcher05 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      To be fair, SMB2 was a reskin of Doki Doki Panic made after SMB3.

    • @sonicmario64
      @sonicmario64 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@FullArcher05 That may be true, but I didn't even know that "Super Mario Bros. 3" was actually released in Japan at around the same time that "Super Mario Bros. 2" was released in the US, the latter of which eventually was released in Japan as "Super Mario USA".

    I'm honestly surprised that Exo didn't mention the VOICE ACTING in Super Mario Advanced 4! Although, there was barely any, it was pretty cool to hear Mario say, "Hee hee, I got it!" or "Just what I needed!" whenever he got a power-up. It was my favorite part about the game (I grew up with Advanced 4) and I think Advanced 4 is the better game.

      I also liked how talkative Mario was in the Super Mario Advance games, especially since it totally made up for Mario's lack of dialogue in the cutscenes from "Super Mario Sunshine" (considering the fact it was one of the worst games in the series, anyway).

  • @RyanStorey1231
    @RyanStorey1231 9 ปีที่แล้ว +181

    Fun fact: In the GBA remake, there is an Easter Egg of sorts in which you can access hidden dialogue from one of the kings.
    If you beat one of the airship levels with the Frog Suit- which is nearly impossible since that item is utterly useless on land- you will float down to the king, who will not give you the usual dialogue, but will instead say [paraphrased]:
    "Thank you, Mario. But you look different. Shall I change you with this wand?"
    It was humorous. But you need complete mastery of the airship levels in order to access this.

      Also it's generally harder and if i had to decide, i perfer hard levels over exploration. that doesn't mean that i hate exploration, (I LOVE BoTW) but if i had to pick between a sequenced point a to point b mario game over a sandbox mario, i'd pick the point a to point b. :/

    Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World are my top 2 favorite Mario games of all time. While some may argue that Super Mario Bros. 3 is overrated (along with Super Mario World) I think it really does deserve the praise that it gets. It expanded so much upon the Mario universe and added so many things that would soon become a staple to the series. Overall, it's a huge improvement over Super Mario Bros. 1 and Lost Levels and will, in my opinion, go down as one of the best games of all time next to Super Mario World.

    You may not have been aware of this, but I will inform you anyhow.
    There are powerups added with the e-reader.
    The cape feather was a card you can get in the USA... But...
    In Japan, there was a Boomerang 'Powerup' card.
    Why did I put that in quotations? Because it's not an item lost from damage, you actually can throw a blue boomerang ( Super Mario 3[D])
    And these power ups can be accessed through the action replay.

    I remember when I was five years old, and my dad and I would leave the old NES system on to make sure our progress would still stand. We still played the game to oblivion, but completing it was a chore. It was why Kirby's Adventure was my favorite game on the system.
    It was also why I loved the save feature on All-Stars and the GBA port.

      For me, an important part of the SMB3 experience is the graphical glitching in the first and last columns as you scroll some areas. Sometimes you got tile combinations that are funny. I wish they had an option to retain this glitchy scrolling mechanic in the new releases. IMO, the perfect SMB3 would be to simply add battery save and previous world selection to the NES cart... and maybe one more location to find the hammer suit.

    My only problem with Mario 3's controls, is Mario's acceleration and top speed were a bit too fast, causing me to overshoot jumps over pits, as mentioned in Johnny's review. Though I do agree the floaty jump is really nice in Mario 3, the acceleration is just too fast, and I know I can just let go of B, but then Mario's too slow for me. Its just nitpicking at this point, but I feel Mario World had a better balance. Also you can slow Mario's descent in World by holding the jump button longer, kinda like a more subtle Cap Feather.

    • @ZipplyZane
      @ZipplyZane 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, SMB3 is late in the NES lifecycle. But SMW is early in the SNES cycle. SMB3 is a great technical achievement, while SMW is not.
      I don't see what that has to do with which looks better, though. SMW looks better, even if I think the gameplay isn't as much fun.
      Sure, SMB3 has some sprites that look as good as anything in SMW. But it also has some ugly sprites (Goombas, Koopa Troopa heads). And it just always had this dirtier look to it, while SMW is shined up.
      Now the SNES version shines up everything so well that I can argue that the art is better. And I do think that SMW could have looked better than it did. And there are some NES games (Kirby, Jackie Chan, Batman 2) whose graphics rival SNES games.
      But I still say SMW looks better than SMB3 NES.
      Now, if you said Super Mario Land 2, then I could see the comparison. That game looks really good.

    • @maverickrob9169
      @maverickrob9169 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the sprites and graphics in SMB3 look better. While the graphics in SMW are definitely very colourful, they have this weird blurry thing going on with them. It looks like someone has smeared Vaseline on the camera, and it has bothered me to this day. The sprites for the enemies in SMW look way too friendly and awkward for my liking. Bowser looks so strange, and the fact that they never used the same sprite for SMM2, proves that Nintendo thought the same. The sprites for the enemies in SMB3 look more menacing, which is why there is no contest for me when it comes to what game looks the best.

    As a longtime of both 3 and World, I find myself actually preferring the snappier movement of World's controls. With 3, Mario's got so much momentum that I feel like I'm constantly fighting to get him up to speed or keep him from going off a cliff. Not that I necessarily think the game would be better with World's controls inserted; clearly 3 was designed around a Mario with floaty jumps and the momentum of a semi, so ultimately it works.

    There's actually 2 patches. One for the 3x normal levels, and other for 5 special Star levels.
    A very stupid move, the E-Reader was. But not the only one. The game only could store so many levels and it seems that you couldn't erase the ones you already had to put new levels, so you had to choose what levels "you wouldn't want in your game" or just buy a second game.
    It was truly stupid, and sad. But thanks to the hacking comunity we can play those levels, and are pretty fun!
    There was even a Cape Feather Power up from Mario World!

    +Caleb Jaaniste It annoys me when people expect me to reply to their comments, but their comment for some reason doesn't have a reply option underneath it. From what I understand, you have to deliberately set your account to not let people reply. But that's enough about that. The Boost Formula Sonic games have perfectly functional and well rounded controls. In fact, they give Sonic his most detailed and versatile moveset yet, which allows for some intricate level design and makes speed running an absolute thrill. The only game that comes close to losing that functionality is Unleashed, seeing as the camera always seems a little too close up and some of the later levels experience some slowdown. For Colors and Generations, they toned down the speed just a little, pulled the camera back, added more platforming, and ultimately achieved the best balance of speed and platforming of any Sonic games yet released, Classic and Dreamcast era titles included. And that's on top of the better storytelling, the gorgeous visuals, the genre varied soundtracks, the excellent boss fights, and all the other small great touches that Sonic Team put into those titles. That doesn't make the other games bad in the slightest, it just means I consider a particular gameplay style more fun to play than other perfectly playable and fun gameplay styles. I actually like Sonic Adventure 2 quite a bit, myself, and I also used to be a pretty biased Dreamcastian. But eventually I realized the many flaws of Adventure, Adventure 2, and Heroes, gained a deeper appreciation for the Classics, and embraced Colors and Generations as taking the best elements of the Classics and Dreamcast titles while being its own unique thing. That is why they are my favorite Sonic games.

    I remember playing Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 and having a lot of fun with the game. I had a few of the e-Cards and an e-Reader, so I was able to play some of those levels and use the Cape Feather, at least. If you use certain emulators, then it's possible to be able to play all of those levels and use those power-ups and switches whenever you want.

    Super Mario World and Super Mario Bros. 3 both handle picking up Koopa Shells very differently. SMB3 forces you to walk up to a shell and then hold the run button to pick it up, while in SMW it's possible to just hold the run button and then jump on the shell to pick it up. This is later used in the more recent games that I've become so accustomed to this playstyle and find SMB3 and the older games clunky to control making me prefer SMW over SMB3.

    Fantastic review. I've got Super Mario World as a better drunk party game due to how crazy easy it is, but otherwise, I gladly admit that Mario 3 is the better game, despite the many times I've revisited World and the nostalgia factor. I can think of more than a few stages in World where that little bit of jump hang would've been fantastic. Going to try out those bonus levels and maybe even replay the main game (for all the places I skipped via warp whistle) on emulator at some point now.

    I have to absolutely AGREE... the way Mario controls on SMB3 IS the reason if not one of the main reasons the game is so awesome. ONLY few understand this and IF probably many do then that's why they know it's awesome. Fighting bosses or flying or hanging and bouncing on an enemy then when air borne guiding Mario to land some place was such an awesome feeling that allowed me to enjoy interacting with the areas even more. I remember when floating down I wanted to fall faster and I stopped my tail more and was able to speed up a freefall then slow down and land as I wanted to. THAT WAS AWESOME! Agreed!

    I recently played through Mario World and now I'm playing SMB3. I tried Mario games several time in the past, but I hated them because of the floaty and gliding controls. Once you finally master them it starts to be fun however, and because I played SMW first, the control of SMB3 feels awkward since it's just bit different, not much, but enough to throw off some of jumps.

    10:48 Maybe the Koopalings are considered the children of Bowser's Brother nowadays? If you don't know who that is, he's the Blue Bowser that appears in the NES version of The Lost Levels in 8-4. Note though that the Warp Whistle from SMB3 NES was intended to facilitate save or password features, much like the Warp Zones from the original SMB. People note the number of levels in SMB3, but they ignore that they are generally shorter than SMW or even SMB1's levels. That's why they don't give them save points in the middle.
    As for moving between levels--that's why they made the Warp Whistles so easy to find. Just play the first 3 or 4 levels and warp back to the World you were on, just like you'd used a continue.
    And it's why the equivalent in SMW doesn't actually help you get to any other level but Bowser's Castle.

    Played the GBA version as a kid. Later picked up the NES version on Wii Virtual Console. Both are amazing... can't really pick one over the other - remakes in general don't usually add or subtract too much IMO unless its a full overhaul (Pokemon remakes, etc).
    The gameplay and controls are superb, and the level design... that's what really sets this game apart. I'm not sure whether Mario World or Mario 3 has the edge here... they both have some of the best level types ever (Ghost Houses, Airships)... but I do suppose Mario 3 gets an edge from controls.
    Also, you forgot to mention that you can beat Bowser w/ the Hammer Suit. Best Powerup EVAR.

Not to mention, 95% of the games back then didn't have one either. The game warrants and rewards frequent play, with all the secrets. I know these days people need auto-saves and all that stuff, but there is a reason for the term "NES hard". Fantastic video.

      +Adolphus Cox Nothing, I mean NOTHING beats Super Mario Bros. 3, it is in my book one of if not the GREATEST game of all time. A complete masterpiece from start to finish. All Stars may have given it a graphic upgrade and save feature, but 1989/1990's SMB. 3 is timeless. It is hands down the BEST Mario game ever made. Nintendo and Miyamoto will never and since then has never duplicated such perfection.
      Mario 3 just perfects EVERYTHING about Mario and all platformers in general. Spot on control, superb level design, inegenutive and creative presentation, flawless hit detection, innovative weapons, tons and TONS of hidden easter eggs and secrets, a stellar and terrific difficulty level where every stage offers a fantastic paced challenge. And quirky characters and text.
      SEGA twice got close to this with Sonic CD and Sonic The Hedgehog 3 and tried as HARD as they could with Sonic Adventure 2. SEGA learned from Nintendo how to make excellent platformers. Nobody not even Sony with their overblown LBP will ever reach that level of effort.
      The Advance remake gave the classic some nifty extras in addition to introducing millenials to the masterpiece that ended the 80s.

    This is probably already been said but the Mario and Luigi mode is like a two player mode from the older games back in the day

    I declare Super Mario Advance 4 as a Rebreak. It lacks the charm of the orginal game. *sarcasm*

      To quote WBG here, "It's not the same as the original, so therefore it's bad!"

    What's interesting is, you probably could do the e-reader nowadays. I mean the 3DS allows scanning those weird square thingies, I could have easily seen collectable cards work with that, I mean there's amiibos, why not mii-cards or whatever?
    Though I would LOVE to see a compilation of all the Super Mario Advance remakes on one cartridge, with the e-cards already unlocked. Woulda made a heck of a better 25th anniversary than the lazy all stars port to the wii! Ah well.

    you need a switch powerup to revert luigi to his world physics in the main game, he behaves the same in the e-levels as he did in super mario advance 2

    1:35 I'd like to hear the case for Mario 3 being Nintendo's best game ever, as we live in a world where Super Metroid exists.

    I always figured the Famicom/NES release schedule was tiered two years apart because that's about the gap between USA & Japan system launch. Gaming magazines mentioned Japanese titles taking extra time to get an American cartridge release, but region locks & being a kid meant you just had to wait.
