Ruger American Ranch 5.56 NATO 16" - From Box to Field

- Garrett picked up a brand new Ruger American Ranch 5.56mm and tests out various ammo straight out of the box. Then we managed to get a woodchuck with it! This rifle is very light weight and handy with the 16" threaded barrel, Magpul PMAG, and pic rail ready for a scope. This is a pretty nice package from Ruger and we are looking forward to bringing out more potential in it. As always thanks for watching, sharing, and subscribing! An update to this video. Garrett has since installed a Strike Industries $20 muzzle brake and an M Carbo trigger spring. It has helped immensely and the groups are very good now. Less than ½ inch with hand loads. Both the 73gr eld-m and the 52gr Sierra match shoot great from this setup. He also now has a 4.5-14 pro staff scope on it instead of the buckmaster.
I have a prostaff 5 4.5-18x mildot great scope it was on a 300RUM now riding a ruger american .308
I went with a Witt brake cause I put one on my 300WM and it worked really good. No more blinding the blind....
I also bought a pair of AMEND2 10 round mags which seem to work as good or better than the factory one. Very smooth. I don't think they will outlast the metal one though but so far they are working great.
Good tip on the spring. I'll have to get one and try it.
This gun turned out to be so much fun to shoot. I hate to say it but I think it just surpassed the 10/22 fun factor......
Thank for all the great tips!
Does your zero change going from 556 to 223?
I got my dad one for his birthday and he loves it.
I purchased the Ruger Ranch in 7.62x39. I love it.
Seems to like Hornady, I have this rifle I use Frontier, rifle seems to like it.
Shooting a rifle chambered in 5.56 you have to remember the average twist is either 1:8 or better so heavier ammunition between 62-77 grain will work the best out of this caliber
Got to shoot my new Ruger 223/556 and it is a blast to shoot. Couple of things I have learned so far....
1. The muzzle blast will blind anyone looking anywhere near the muzzle in low light. I have a flash hider on order. Of course during the day it's not a problem.
2. Initial sighting in I found this is a very accurate rifle. Using plain WallyWorld 100 round Value Pack ammo it shot very good. I was loosing light so I didn't get to try the V-Max.
3. The trigger out of the box is pretty good and only just a little stiff. Very clean break and very little creep. I will be adjusting it down like you did.
Thanks for your vids and the review of the Ruger Ranch!
2:03 "We have an assortment of ammunition here that's readily available" -- Those were the days! Nice video. I really like my American in 5.56 as well. I want to get it in a Magpul stock but still waiting for their appropriate 10 rd magazine availability....
same here, apparently magpul is working on them... better late then never they say...
I have this rifle, and it is the best rifle I’ve owned. More satisfying than a rem 700 sps tactical, that is saying something!!!
Collin O'Connor Hello. I have a bit of a dumb question for you. Does the rifling in the barrel extend clear to the tip of the barrel? I just picked up one of these rifles and have noticed the rifling stops about a half of an inch away from the end of the barrel. The last half of an inch appears to be slightly larger in diameter and seems to be pretty scratched up. I’m just curious if this is normal. Thanks
Wild Bill my barrel is not like that :/
Collin O'Connor Thanks for the reply. I got in contact with Ruger and there was definitely an issue with the barrel on my gun. I am not sure how a barrel that is missing half an inch of rifling passes quality control, but never the less they replaced the barrel for me. This is just one of many issues I’ve had with Ruger in the past few months. I used to love Ruger firearms, but I unfortunately won’t be buying their products anymore. Their quality control is terrible. Even their technicians overlook issues that are as plain as day. Have a good one!
@James clark Despite what you may think, it’s not BS. Besides the issue that you read about above, I also had issues with multiple Mark IV Hunters. The first one I bought had the mounting holes on top the barrel/receiver off center. Therefore, when mounting an optic, it set crooked. I sent it back to Ruger and within a month they sent me a replacement which had been built by Ruger technicians. It had severe scratching in the barrel which was very easy for me to see with my naked eye. Somehow trained technicians couldn’t. The gun also had a crack in one of the wood grips. So, once again I sent it back to Ruger and they sent me another replacement in about a month. It had a blemish in the steel on the grip, but I was tired of dealing with Ruger so didn’t bother contacting them again. These are my reasons for stating that Ruger has terrible quality control. If I could post pictures on here to show all that I have explained, I would.
Really... Interesting!
On these Ruger Americans, the barrel heats up pretty fast. The third shot in a three shot group is almost always a flyer. For the best accuracy, wait for the barrel to cool between each shot
Probably not a bad idea. Thanks.
Best review of this rifle i've seen. I ordered one through Cabelas in 308 apparently exclusive to Cabelas Canada only, which I thought was kinda weird. Should be in next week looking forward to playing with it. It should make an awesome deer gun especially for us on the west coast. Shots are usually in close and lots of dense bush. A light short maneuverable gun should be just the ticket .
Thanks guys enjoyed the video.
Thanks for watching.
Nello, how did you like the .308? I haven’t been able to find any reviews on it.
@@OutlawOverlandCo I love mine.
Pretty cool rifle. I actually just bought one today
Ditto, these guys did a good job for sure
Perfect rifle for farmers to carry around in the truck w that 16” sweet gun 👍🏽🔥
You should be using the rounds you plan to hunt with.... in 233/556 it’s easier to find sp and fmj in the same grain and brand
About to be my first firearm purchase!
Not a bad choice at all
These are really good rifles for the money. I have the 300 blackout version and I can get sub MOA at 100 yards no problem. I wanted a 5.56/.223 rifle, so I ended up getting the Ruger Gunsite Scout rifle... seems to like the heavier stuff. Personally I like the Hornady 73 grain ELD-M rounds.
I believe that's what Garrett is hand loading for this rifle now. Thanks for watching.
I'm sure you already know this, but in case someone already hasn't said it: if you want to shoot accurate on the bench you need to get lower. Put the legs up on the bipod, put that shooting rest up from, rest the end of the butt stock in your other hand. You can be rock steady that way. Cheers. Good vid by the way. Thanks for sharing. :)
Hello from the Southern Missouri Ozarks! Almost to the Bootheel...
My son and I are looking at those rifles to, so your review came in at a good time! I just got my Ruger American Predator in 22-250 sighted in.... The first two shots at 100 yards went in the same hole and ofcourse, I had to pull the third shot a bit off to the left! It appears to want to shoot very tight groups, but won't know anything worthwhile until I start hand-loading for it. For what I'm going to use that rifle for, I put a Vortex 3-9 Diamondback tactical on it. I like the scope so far and hope to get out after some coyotes soon. Thanks for the great review guys, it's appreciated!
I also want to mention that I have watched all of your chuck hunting videos, and have enjoyed them very much! I did a lot of ground squirrel and chuck hunting myself in my younger days with a Ruger MarkI Target pistol, 22lr and a Marlin 39-A 22lr rifle and while most of my chuck shooting was at 100 yards and less with the pistol, I managed to reach out to 200 yards on occasion with my rifle. The amount of center fire rifle chuck shooting that I've done was limited and I haven't done any in a number of years. When I did, I used my 300 win mag, a 270 and a 243. The chucks that met those 150s out of that 300 would sometimes fly 10 feet straight up! I am really interested in getting a 243 setup similar to the Weatherby you use and have one I have been eyeing at one of my local stores.... Long winded at times, sorry about that. Being old school, I know what bullets are doing out to about 500 yards and haven't gotten into the bigger high magnification scopes at this time, I did however finally break down and get a range finder ;).
Hi there I have the same rifle but in 223 Remington now what size treated is it?
Exactly...I appreciate your info
Ruger fin here, love what you do keep it up... thx
I've hand loaded 50 to 75 grain bullets for mine and it seems to like em all. It even groups the cheap 223 Tula 55gr steel case bullets good. It's a good gun, mine is a older model with the five round magazine I wish had waited and gotten one of the newer models with the new mag system. Enjoy your rifle and good shooting to you.
Thanks and good to know.
I love the Nikon Buckmaster scopes, but on my ranch I put a Nikon P223 scope. I will be removing the bipod from my old coyote gun a mini14 to put on the ranch.
I got one also , love this rifle, Im shooting 26.1 gr of CFE223 with a the Hornady 55gr FMJ-BT getting half inch groups at 100 yards, but did't start coming in tell about 200 rounds barrel break in , I am using a muzzle brake on mine
Put it in a Bell & Carlson stock, bed it with glass infused epoxy, replace the Ruger trigger with a Timney trigger, and it's a consistently sub MOA rifle -- probably 1/2 MOA. And it looks great too! I did it. I know. For the 10 round AICS mag, use a MagPul stock.
How much weight did that add to the rifle? I am trying to keep it as light as I can, within reason, for hunting purposes.
@@8626John The Bell & Carlson stock is very light. I believe the Magpul might be a bit heavier. But I use it for hunting and it's a very comfortable weight. If you're serious, I can weigh it for you and let you know.
@@dgreenapple thanks for the reply. Just an estimate is fine. My plan for this rifle is to hunt varmints with it, so I am trying to keep the weight down. I have a .22-250 that I use for shooting off the bench. I also have a Ruger MPR but I prefer a bolt gun for hunting as I am more familiar with it. What scope would you recommend? Thanks again for getting back to me.
@@8626John The Rifle with the B&C stock and a Nikon P223 4-12x40 BDC Reticle with Warne Steel Rings weighs 8 lbs all in. If you do it with the Magpul stock (which you have to do if you have the AIC Magazine vs. the Rotary magazine), it will weigh another 1 lb -- total is 9 lbs. Possibly pushing it for a hunting rifle, but fine for me. Personally, I would now go with the Leupold VX-3i 4.5-14x40. It's 4 oz lighter and Leupold is great glass. Also I would use the $60 Vortex rings which are very light. This will all in make it 5 oz or so lighter and a great hunter.
@@dgreenapple Thanks for the information. I appreciate the time you spent to answer my questions.
Cool video guys!
Based on this vid I went out and bought one. Super light and very compact! This is my first 223/556.
Couple of questions. I'm finding that I can get 223 in hunting loads but only ball ammo in 556. I have not checked on-line yet.
This leads me to the other question. What is your preference. Shoot 223 or 556?
OOPS... one more. Did you make the trigger adjustment and how did it turn out?
Thanks for a great vid!
P.S. I am a sub now...
I don't think I've ever heard of a 5.56 hunting load either. If that's the case I would go with a factory loaded 223 varmint bullet any day. The trigger is much better after the adjustment. Thanks for watching.
Thank you. I didn't know bout the hunting loads so that helps me alot.
@@wm973 if you want some varmint type rounds I would look for 5.56 that's loaded with Sierra bullets. I know Black Hills makes some mk262 type rounds with the Sierra OTM bullets and I think the polymer tipped Matchkings. Most varmit/ hunting rounds though are 223.
@@yolo-qr2fq Thank you for the info. I'm still learning the 223/556 round and your right.... the 223 is the hunting round and that's good enough for what I want.
I have a 308 and 300WM for anything else that might warrant more power.
I'm replacing my Lee Turrent press(hate it!) and will start loading 223's although just about anything I shoot in it works pretty good.
Thanks again,
WM
Hows the cheeks weld? Looks like you can get that scope lower.
cool video...i have same rifle like yours but i have only the 5 rounds...what brand of magazine you are using...i will be happy to hear answer from you...be safe and happy shooting.
These are ar 15 mags. I have one. It's great.
1:8 usually shoots the 62gr to 69gr the best, I stay away from winchester ammo unless its match grade.
Ruger presents this rifle as a 5.56 NATO barreled rifle, is there any problem shooting .223 with it ?
No problems there
I just found out this rifle was available and been looking for something bolt action that took AR mags and wasn’t sure about the Mossberg MVP. This seems to fill the niche I’m looking for and eager to get one to try. Thanks and greetings from Missouri as well
Thanks. I have seen reviews on the Mossberg as well. It doesn't seem like you'd go wrong with either rifle.
I’m still debating on both. Always have had great luck with Ruger guns but same with Mossberg. I do like the Mossberg for the fact it has iron sights. It would be the ruger instantly if it has irons. Just for backup but still nice to have. Thanks again
I have the Mossberg MVP Predator model in 223/556 with the 18” barrel and absolutely love it. I call it my “buddy gun”. I work on a large cattle ranch here in Florida and it stays in my truck with me every day. It’s a tack driver for sure. I’ve taken 2 bucks with it, 10 coyotes, and a bunch of hogs. I also recently picked up the Ruger American Ranch rifle in 450 bushmaster and I know that caliber is in a different class than the 223 but I’ll tell ya I’m in love with the rifle it self. Very accurate, light, great functionality and doesn’t feel cheap even though it’s an affordable rifle. Anyways Just wanted to share my experiences with ya. 🤙
So having both and can only choose one which would you go with. The Ruger American Ranch or the Mossberg MVP ? I’m kind of really torn on which I’d rather have because there are things I like about both
My Mossberg mvp is the predator model which has the medium bull barrel on making it heavier than my ruger. My Ruger American Ranch rifle is chambered in 450 bushmaster so it doesn’t accept AR mags like the 556/223 version in this video which is a con when comparing it to my Mossberg. I’ll say this, if I could get the accuracy out of 223/556 version of the ruger that accepts the AR mags that I do with my Mossberg then I would probably choose the Ruger. Mostly because of it being lighter and easier to track through the woods with. I’d have to have a gun to my head to truly make a choice between the two tho because I love them both lol.
MCarbo has lighter trigger springs that will get you down around 2 lbs.
That stock always reminds me of the old savage axis stock.
About every 10th round seems to jam up. I've tried other magazines besides the Magpul, and it still happens. Is this something I can fix or is it going to happen forever??
Check your feed ramp, it may help to run a Q-tip with some aluminum polish over it for a few minutes. It can reduce any abrasiveness that may affect feeding.
@@Rakkasan-vr8xt thanks!
This is on the short list. (No pun intended) plus I have all these extra usgi mags my "uncle" gave me.
Uncle sam? 😀
Those 55 Grain V-Max from Hornady shoot great out of my AR with an 18" Wilson Combat Barrel. I shoot sage rats with it all day at 300-400 yards. I shot a hog with the 55 grain v-max out of a 22-250 and I wouldn't recommend doing that. Great varmint bullet in any case.
Do any 3rd party manufacturers make synthetic stocks for these Ruger Ranch rifles? Thanks.
Yes MDT does but the stocks are between 500$ to 1000$ some of the best stocks you can put on a rifle but expensive.
Hey man literally just got this gun today!!!
Nice. Get a chance to try it out?
Chuckin' No man not yet I’m on vacation and I stopped up at cabelas and I’m heading home on Sunday. Can wait to get some chucks!!
How do you like it?
good job. south paw too, my man.
I'm looking at this video with my mind on buying another rifle in this 'class'. I like how you guy's 'review' this Ruger, so I'l subscribe to see what else you come up with.
Thanks for this one.
Reg Sparkes thanks! We do have a second video on this with better results. I hope you will check out our other videos as well.
@@ChuckinTV Yup, I just went looking for that video, and it does indeed shoot better than before. Nice work.
Cheers!
I found the bolt on the rifles that don't take ar mags are smoother. All those extra cuts probably affect it.
I cannot find the 223/556 nato with the threaded barrel. The Ruger website only shows the 223 with the 10 round clip having the threaded barrel. I would really like to get in in the 223/556 nato but I for sure want the threaded barrel. Anyone know about this?

Anything 5.56 nato will shoot .223.

Great video is all I can say. You guys are squared away.
Looking to get one and was doing research on it. Your video on it and you checking everything was very helpful I really appreciate it. Have you made a video on how to drop the weight on the trigger pull? 4 1/2 pounds is quite a bit. Can't wait to see your other videos. Keep on keepn on
You can pick up a M Carbo spring kit that helps a lot. We have a couple of videos on this rifle

What would be the best on a budget scope for the ruger american ranch rifle 223 556? Something I can shoot 200 yards for coyotes
Vortex scopes are pretty nice and most can be had for under $500.
If you're hunting at night though you might want a night vision or thermal imaging scope.

@@justinhorn4246 that's what I have on my rifle, it's a 3-9 power. It is a pretty decent scope. On the lowest magnification the target acquisition is pretty quick and the higher magnifications help reach out pretty far.

@@8626John a custom rifle ? Like what there are so many stocks and grips for the AR to choose from if someone can’t find something they like then I don’t know what to say. The only custom rifles I know of are inferior bolt guns.
I ordered this rifle; The first dealer could not identify the availability of this rifle. The second dealer, I have waited for nearly 3 weeks.

You're shooting the left with that right rifle. That rifle has left also.
I think you should try the Fusion deer hunting load.
should be fun with an lpvo for someone that cant get an AR15 easily
I honestly believe that if you put in the same amount of effort into the ruger ranch bolt action. 556 that you would your favorite. AR 15 this rifle will smoke it. Hands down.
I think I have the same rifle but AR mags do not fit at all. Mini 14 mags don’t fit either. The magazine well is way too wide so only the mag that came with it fits.
You would've had to get the ar mag model not the rotary mag. Still a good rifle.

What model number is this rifle? Is it the 26965? I’m just making sure I’m watching a review on the right rifle lol
Is it chambered in 5.56 or only .223?
Should be in 5.56/.223. The Ruger Predator rifle is strictly .223
Did this guy just kill the fly @5:30 lol
haha never noticed that
How tight is the mag? Is there any wobble?
There is a little play with an unloaded mag but nothing too bad. Garrett says he hasn't had any feeding or ejecting issues.
3 shot groups?
I thought these rifles had a 5 round flush mag?
It depends on the which ranch rifle you get.
Ruger made so many rifles they wore out the molds so the new ones you're seeing more magazine options( aics, ar, mini 30, and box steel on long actions) plus the rotary aren't that great they've already replaced one on my .308 all weather.
I just bought one of these rifles this weekend! Put a vortex diamondback 4-12x40 and Leopold rings.. cant wait to dial it in!!!👌🔫🔫
@@derrickarchibeque8942 if the rotary mag gives you hell not clambering the rounds because sometimes they bind up call ruger they'll send you a new one no charge did this with my .308 but well worth the money.
I bought the AR mag model.
If they had this in left hand, I'd be on it like white on rice.
I keep getting conflicting reports, Ruger website says it's .223 only and there is another TH-cam video where a guy said his 5.56 ammo wouldn't chamber and had to use .223
Maybe they updated it without changing the model number?
The Ranch section on Ruger's site says 5.56 for a flush mag and 223 for the Pmag version. Must be a mistake. This rifle has 5.56 on the barrel.

I hope you ate that critter -- no problem. Hunting for food, or to get rid of destructive pests, like all the feral hogs here in Texas, is one thing. But killing just to test your marksmanship is really a sick business. As Native Americans and indigenous people everywhere would say, it shows no respect for the animal. In essence, you are no better than a serial thrill killer. There are many other ways to enjoy shooting than purposeless killing. Don't just get your dander up -- think about it.
I completely respect that opinion. To be honest we don't eat woodchucks. We mainly shoot them for pest control. Shooting them is also fun and a great way to make sure we are spot on for shots on larger game. However, we do respect the animals and do everything we can to make them not suffer. The main reason we practice so much on our marksmanship is to ensure minimal suffering. Your concerns are something we take very seriously here. Thanks for watching.
Don’t be using that crappy Frontier ammo. It’s blowing up guns all over the net. Hornady won’t take responsibility for it.
