Probably to account for the 3DS's lower resolution. At that clarity, and considering you approach them from a distance at high speed, the escalators would probably look like a mesh of pixels.

I’d add the mall from L4D2 to the list, one of the most memorable maps on it IMO

Dead Rising and L4D2 were my first two thoughts, the elevator sequence in the opening ALWAYS gets me hyped even though as a tween the level itself scared me beyond belief
In the same style Payday 2 and Killing Floor 2 also have mall levels (Payday has like a million (more like 2-3 but still))
Saints Row 2 had a pretty awesome mall too. I remember riding my ATV through it.
I always got lost trying to find the cool shops with alt clothes. Once I found them It was all worth it.

I'm shocked you didn't mention the Mall level from Tony Hawk's Pro Skater
Its one of the only levels that's linear with a finish line and in the 1+2 Remake that came out recently, the mall is run down and abandoned

That whole time i was waiting for Dead Rising, I knew he was going to say it, he had to, but I just didn't know when. I am surprised you brought up GTA: Vice City's mall though, that was the first videogame mall that came to my mind when I clicked on this video.
You really can't find a more iconic mall than the one in Dead Rising!
The moving cars got patched in a long time ago in Mario Kart 8.
Also, the Mario Kart Tour Coconut Mall has no Miis.

There's this secret mall location in saints row 2 that lets you shop and drive display cars around. It's also filled with a lot of rooms with one of them being a parody of hot topic.
I thought I was the only one.
If I remember correctly I also think you can drive a display car in GTA vice city
Earthbound also has a pretty cool mall, especially since rpgs of the time weren’t usually set in the modern day! It gets especially entertaining when Paula gets kidnapped by monsters and the power goes out
I’m pretty sure the reason why they put arrows to the escalators in Mario kart 7 is so you could see it better because of the small screen of the 3ds
Yeah, that actually does make sense. It seems odd that they'd keep the arrows in Mario Kart 8 though.

I love the huge variety of stuff you think of to talk about! I never really stopped and considered malls in games before, and I love that you got me to! The gaming mall I immediately thought of was the one in Earthbound - it effectively goes from a normal fun mall to modern abandoned mall in a second, and creeped the heck out of me as a kid! I'm so glad you're diving into gaming minutiae, it's like it broadens my ability to enjoy what I'm playing!
I hope GTA6 will have malls players can enter and screw around. I love malls in games in an unexplainable way.

For me, the most iconic mall will always be Rounds Square Shopping Center from Saints Row 2..
My favourite is the Hotel Shops in Luigi’s Mansion 3. That funky music and the Paul Blart ghost are the best parts about that mall
Malls are such a foreign concept to me.
We have them in the UK under the name "shopping center" but even at their peak they were nothing like US malls.
People I went to school with would hang around outside corner shops or a nearby playpark.
shopping centers still exist where I live but they were more destinations for families who didn't live in the city and wanted to take their children to go do something instead of being a social destination. It's still used that way it's just less common
I haven't really thought how much fun malls were in video games! My favorite has to be Alivel Mall from Kirby and the Forgotten Land, very cool video!

Awww man you forgot saints row 2’s mall! It was huge and had everything from hot topic knock off stores you could buy clothes from, to a food court with purchasable food.
The Mall in the Last of us DLC "Left behind" also comes to my mind. The scene in the Arcade was so well made

Also, the Dead Rising mall music is the best

The only best and memorable mall in video game history, definitely goes to Dead Rising. In that zombie apocalypse classic you can do almost anything in that game. From customisation to wearing the strangest clothes you’ll find at the mall. Just like you’d do in real life.
State of Emergency had the most iconic and memorable mall in a game for me
This is a funny coincidence. I just went to my local mall for my birthday cuz' I appreciate the scenery and coolness of malls as much as u do. Sadly, alot of stores were closed down and many parts of the mall looked creepy and abandoned. It was a bit spooky and sad at the same time. However, there were still a few nice stores open and, of course, the food court. That's one of the best parts of a mall. A silver lining to this story, tho, is that a roller rink is opening up in my local mall so I'm really excited to see it.
I like roaming inside the mall. That's all I can do anyway...
The Saints Row 2 mall had three stores that only existed in the mall for clothing. One for goth/emo, one for costumes and cosplay, and one for fetishwear. I never would have lived out my Hugh Laurie in pasties, stripper boots, and a g-string mass murder rampage fantasies without it!!

My favourite is the New Eden Mall from Mirror’s Edge. So much fun to run around in and it’s really beautifully designed

The North Point Mall from GTA Vice City is also such an unforgettable one. I remember being fascinated as a kid playing that game and spending hours upon hours just exploring and wreaking havoc within the mall and it brought me pure joy.

Saints Row 2 had a big underground mall with stores that aren't present in the open world and plenty of room to drive your car in it.

One of my favorite malls is the mall in fourside from earthbound. You go shopping and upgrade your team, only for Paula to get kidnapped and have to fight one of giygas's minions.
Seven minutes in I was like “How has he not talked about Dead Rising yet?” Should’ve known you were saving the best for last.
Another cool mall I wanna mention is the Arkham Knight's HQ in Batman: Arkham Knight. It's this giant mall that's been repurposed for a main base of operations for the Arkham Knight, The Scarecrow and their militia. There's a really cool stealth section near the end where you must apprehend the Arkham Knight whom of which is trying to hunt you down from various vantage points as well as take out a multiple squads of armed militia, all while the layout constantly changes so your tactics must constantly update to fit the need of the new layout. Really good stuff.
I had so much fun in the Vice City mall as a kid. I went to the coffee shop to get the katana and then murder innocent shoppers for hours. Me and my friend even came with a silly song we'd sing while slicing people and giggling. So much fun.
I'd like to add two honorable mentions, Rounds Square Shopping Center from Saints Row 2 and Cancer City Megamall from Cruelty Squad.

I was born in the 90's so I wasn't fully immersed in mall culture but I still experienced the tail end where "Hanging out at the mall" ranked in the same league as going to the movies or going bowling. Fun times and dearly missed for sure.
My the most memorable mall areas for me are the mall with the anti gravity rink in the center in Space Quest 4 and the mall with killer dolls in Zombies Ate My Neighbors.

Great video, and great topic! I really love exploring malls in video games too, but I don't think I've ever seen someone talk about them. All the ones mentioned here are memorable. I love the run down one in Kirby, and I loved exploring the game store in Kingdom Hearts 3.

One of my favorite malls in video games has to be the Cruelty Squad mall
One that I always think of is State of Emergency, that game was so hyped and when it came out it was crap, but still mindless fun. Chopping up people in the mall was always fun.

The most memorable mall in gaming for me was the one from The Last of Us: Left Behind DLC. I think nearly the entire DLC takes place in the one location, but both in the past and the present.
Sort of related but i had a mall that had an arcade that had mutiple games there, a tekken game (dunno which one), marvel vs capcom 2, crazy taxi, a cocktail pong, and more, but sadly the mall would close down a few years ago, i still remember going there..

Haha, I used to go to the mall at 0:25 all the time. I can still remember the places of all the shops. It was such a nice mall, and I've heard they've been planning to turn it into an Amazon depo? A lot of my childhood memories are from that mall, and I'll miss it.

While this mall isn't known as much. The Pines Mall from BOCW is honestly a beautiful looking map an mall. The 80s look of it and stores parodying irl brands are pretty neat. That and personally, the food court in said map reminds me a lot of a mall I used to frequent pre pandemic.
