*Fun Fact:* They shot 3+ hours worth of footage for this movie. The film's director, John Hughes, wrote a lot of material and scenes that would have fleshed out the characters, and story even further. The producers wanted it trimmed down to 90 minutes.
Now there's a petition to #ReleaseTheHughesCut in its entirety. Hughes confirmed, before his death in 2009, that the extra footage is still in a film reel storage.

3 hours was indeed the very first cut but the Hughes cut, the one that actually made to test audiences, is only about 2h. Personally I'd love to see both but I strongly suspect the first one must drag. My biggest complaint about the 90 minute version we got is that Steve Martin's rant in the hotel arrives too soon. They simply cut way too much prior to that so it doesn't fully make sense for him to get this angry.

It’s funny because I always thought that his wife’s reaction at the end was a little over the top, until I heard the real reason. The movie’s original cut was super long so they had to cut out a bunch of scenes. There’s a whole sub story about his wife thinking that the Steve Martin character was messing around and she thought Dale was actually a woman. So when he shows up at the end with Dale, who obviously was a man, she’s super relieved. All makes sense now.

I could go on and on with what is in my heart right now. I could tell you at length how you remind me of my oldest daughter when she was your age. How that alone pulls my heart strings of joy every time I watch you. Then I could go on forever about how my grandma was the center of the family when I was young. That she was the type who had family gatherings on Thanksgiving. That she would bake for days before, and get up a 4 am the day of. In her small house, we would move furniture out and two banquet tables in, with the kids around the kitchen table. I could tell you how this time of year has my grandmother is center in my thoughts over and over in different ways every time. I could emphasize how this was one of her favorite movies and that I think about her every time I watch it. No matter how hard I try I can never truly get across just what it all means to me. It makes me remember that we all underestimate just how much impact we all have and appreciation we may receive without ever knowing or comprehending. As I was once told by a stranger, "A conversation with a stranger can alter the direction of our lives forever." As I sit here alone I humbly say thank you. I needed this tonight.
This message has been brought to you by Jack Daniels and Coca-Cola. I'm really not much of a drinker. Case in point; I just mixed my 3rd drink, and being a normal coffee drinker, I added sugar. Now it has a head like a beer? I don't know what the hell I'm doing but it sure is real, and it sure is real fun! Keep up the good work and Happy Thanksgiving.

Best line of the video: "Ambrosia? Isn't that a skin disease?" (Seriously, it's a ridiculously sweet dessert/side dish with marshmallows, mandarin oranges, pineapple, coconut, and whipped cream).
Steve Martin is a huge star. He started as a stand-up comedian, and was on Saturday Night Live a lot in its early years.
John Candy died in 1994, 26 years ago. It's hard for me to believe it's been that long.
The guy from the eyedrops commercial is Ben Stein. He's best-known for playing a teacher in Ferris Bueller's Day Off (another John Hughes movie you should watch). In addition to being an actor, he also hosted a game show, and is a lawyer who wrote speeches for presidents Nixon and Ford.
That thing at 5:39 is a credit card imprinter. They were common in the pre-internet days. The merchant would put your card in the machine, put a credit card slip on top of it, then slide this thing over the top of the whole mess. The raised numbers on the card would make impressions on the paper slip. The slip would have three layers. Ink in the machine would make the numbers on the top layer legible, while carbon paper would print the numbers on the bottom two layers (you've probably never seen carbon paper, either). The merchant would write the amount to be charged on the top slip, and the carbon paper would transfer this to the other two slips. You'd then write your signature on the top slip (which would also transfer to the other slips). One copy would go to you, one would go to the bank, and the merchant would keep the third copy. Someone at the bank would read the info off the slip and process it manually. Credit card imprinters have pretty much disappeared, and now a lot of new cards don't even have raised numbers.
Cheap motels used phone locks to keep customers from using their room phones without paying. A better motel/hotel would do the same thing by making all outside calls go through the hotel operator. Now that we have cell phones, the only reason to use a hotel phone is to call room service or the front desk.
I'm glad you enjoyed this one. Happy Thanksgiving!

John Hughes directed three films for Paramount around '86-'87 -- FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF, SHE'S HAVING A BABY, and PLANES TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES -- and they kinda work as an unofficial trilogy about stages of life, all set in Chicago where Hughes lived, plus there are connections between the three. In the opening of PT&A, the actor playing Steve Martin's friend at the ad agency is Lyman Ward, who plays the dad to Matthew Broderick in FERRIS BUELLER, and is likely the same character in both. In BABY, Kevin Bacon plays a just-married man dealing with impending fatherhood who reluctantly gets a job in advertising, and likely works in the same agency as Ward and Martin, which is why he has the cameo in PT&A challenging Martin for the cab.
If you watch the other two movies, make sure you stay all the way through the credits, there are "cookies." There was a cookie at the end of PT&A too, but I think you missed it.

The guy is Ben Stein, a lawyer, an economist and political speech writer for Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford.
Apparently while waiting for his audition for the teacher part to start, he read the roll call and it had the extras howling with laughter, again under direction and the cast was laughing, then he was told to make up the class scene which he did about economics and it got him the part.
The way Stein talks in such a monotone and dry, deadpan way is hilarious.

Ashleigh, I would just like to take a moment to point out something we are all experiencing in this growing community... please be genuinely proud of the vibe you are curating here on this platform. It’s no small thing that the comment section for uploads are filled with people across a wide age range largely (?) wanting to encourage and support your dive into our collective memories. Technically, this series started as reviews from a “younger” perspective... but honestly it’s developed into a deeper engagement where we all seemingly feel appreciative of your truly genuine engagement. It’s quite endearing on many levels and in both directions. Thank you for continuing to share and don’t forget to breathe.

Always wanted to ride on a real train? I used to LIVE on one! And let me tell you, I LOVED it! Well except for the first week because the room I had the bunk faced forwards and if the brakes were hit you’d go FLYING out and get dumped on the floor, a fall of about five and a half feet. My second room the bunks were against the sidewall. So during a jump I’d get gently rocked to sleep. I remember waking up in the middle of the night going from Albuquerque to Phoenix and looking out the window up at the sky and seeing more stars than I had ever seen in my entire life! Moments like that make me miss the circus life.
