I want to see a movie with Toni Collette, Kate Winslet, Cate Blanchett and Tilda Swinton. It would be the most talented cast in any movie. Ever! It wouldn't even matter if the script was lousy. They would elevate it to greatness.
The skinny dude in his underwear in the bathroom at the beginning of the movie is Donnie Wahlberg. He lost over 40 pounds to play the part after he was hired. He lost the weight in about 5 weeks. He went through unpleasant experiences prepping for this role. When he came to the set to start filming, M Night walked past him and didn't recognize him. I have a huge amount of respect for Donnie to go that far to play the role. Nobody else could have done a better job physically or mentally playing the role of Vincent. It was perfect.
I remember leaving the cinema and my friend asking what's wrong and I was like "well, it said Donnie Wahlberg was in this movie but I didn't see him anywhere." I guessed the fricking plot twist but didn't see DW playing the pivotal role that sets the whole thing in motion dammit!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 When I saw him playing in Duddits in Dreamcatcher it was easy to catch by then.
I'm honestly stunned that you've managed to live this long and not had the twist for this movie spoiled. It's one of those things that seeped into the cultural consciousness for a long time. "I see dead people" was referenced often by comedians and in other movies and shows. I'm glad you didn't know anything about the movie though, it hits a lot harder when you don't.
Yes, this is as engrained in pop culture as who Luke's father is. I remember when I saw it in theaters I was blown away. We all were. "Whaaaa? A last minute twist! Unvelievable! We have been bamboozled!"
The scene where he tells his mom the story about watching her dance always gets me. My mom did that with me. We were having a fight and she didn't go to my senior theater awards ceremony, or so I thought. She was in the balcony. She came even though we were fighting. I love my mom.
When the twist was revealed, my immediate first thought was, “They cheated.” Not only did it not cheat, but it has a montage to show that you just weren’t paying attention. Brilliant movie. I’m feeling much better now.
This film exploits us knowing that all films have edits and transitions, so we just assume "certain things" happened off-screen to keep the pace of the story, instead of them never happening (like certain conversations, introductions etc).
Well, they kinda cheated. Didn't he break the window at that store? I guess ghosts aren't non-corporeal in this movie, but that was a big reason I didn't suspect he was dead the entire time.
This is a great movie to watch the first time, unless someone spilled the Beans (sorry, Beans and Ashleigh!) about the ending. Anyway, so glad we got to share this with you. I'm feeling much better now.
When The Sixth Sense was first released on video and DVD back in '99, it came with a little supplemental feature called "Rules And Clues" where Shyamalan and Frank Marshall talk about all the little clues to look out for while watching the movie. One of them is that the color red foreshadows a ghostly event. Every time Cole encounters a ghost, the color red is shown significantly beforehand. Ashleigh, you actually picked up on that on your first viewing. Another great reason why this movie has such a lasting impact.
I cry every time I see the scene with Cole and his mom in the car. Toni Collette is so amazing in this whole movie, but that scene in particular gets me every time. I really wish she got nominated for more awards.

The mom poisoning her daughter is a psychological condition called Munchausen by Proxy. The mother was keeping her daughter sick so she'd feel needed and so others would praise her for being such a 'caring' mother.
I have a friend who's mother actually had "MBP" it was WILD. She would leave kerosene in Pepsi bottles lying around the house. She made many trips to the E.R.
This film really stands up to at least two viewings. Now that you know the secret, you can fully appreciate Olivia Williams' performance as Anna Crowe. On first watch, she seemed angry. On the second watch, you'll see a person in great pain from loss. She should have gotten all the awards for her subtle performance. "I feel much better now."
The conversation with Cole & his mom at the end always makes me ugly cry 😭. This is such a good movie. I glad you didn’t know the twist ending in advance. I feel much better now.
Very observant about all the red. The color red appears whenever the spirit world and the real world are in conflict. The DVD extras has a whole featurette about it. It makes any rewatches more interesting.
Unbreakable was so bad I honestly thought it was a joke. Especially when it just ends with text explaining what happened as if the makers even got bored of it.
"I'm feeling much better now" is honestly the scene that sticks out to me the most of the whole movie. I haven't seen this movie in ages but that little girl and her story has NEVER left me and i'm still shook.
And can we just take a moment to appreciate the ABSOLUTELY AMAZING performance by Haley Joel? It blows my mind to think that he was a child actor maybe 10 or 11 years old! And yes, nearly all of us, including me, were surprised by the Twist. The thing is, NOT ONLY did Shyamalan manage to hide the thing in plain sight, so that a majority of people never see it coming; but also it _works;_ it's not some tacked on trick, you can go back and rewatch the movie, and it is completely consistent throughout.

As a parent, I can’t help but feel for her character most of all in this because she knows something’s wrong but doesn’t know what to do for her child. Worst feeling a parent can have when raising their child. I CANNOT wait for you to watch Death Becomes Her!
No one knew he was dead. It was one of the best plot twists in cinematic history. In fact it was so good that it set the bar too high for director M. Night Shyamalan and he has struggled to put anything out that is even comparable. The closest he has come in my opinion is Unbreakable and Split, maybe Signs. Everything else really hasn't been that good. Of course that is my opinion.
The Village is good, which surprised me because on the whole he's WILDLY overrated. And I won't forgive him for Avatar. But this movie and a few others are worth a lot at least.

@ Thaarrish Nair also, when Malcom is in his basement listening to recordings of his sessions with Vincent he hears a voice telling Vincent in Spanish “I don’t want to die”. Vincent was able to communicate with the dead just like Cole.
Toni Collette as the mom is a warm, intelligent, interesting actress. Muriel's Wedding is what cemented my love for her. I will watch anything she does because she is at a higher level.

12 Monkeys is also a Bruce Willis film. (Or, if you wanted to brush up on your high school French, you could watch La Jette, a french art film whose story is almost entirely told in still pictures, which 12 Monkeys was adapted from. You might even learn how to say "I'm feeling much better now" in French.)

I still remember walking out of the theatre with my husband after watching this movie. We had the same reaction as you. No one knew Bruce was dead. That’s the ultimate surprise. Great movie indeed.
Also, when the ghosts were angry or upset the air got cold. When he found out he was dead you could see his wife's breath. This was a masterpiece, he was able to hide the truth until the end but gave the audience clues all the way through the movie.
One of my favorite movies that Osment has been in is Second Hand Lions. Fun fact: they filmed all the scenes in chronological order (for once) to capture Osment's growth. He was visibly taller & lankier by the end of the movie, and his voice had changed. ...A movie well worth seeing once you get out of Hallowbeans.
Sixth Sense is the perfect movie for someone who's house may or may not be haunted, to watch. I watched the Directors commentary for this movie and M Night Shyamalan said that every time a spirit interacts with the physical world that object is red. When Haley Joel Osment's character is attacked by the spirit in the "dungeon" he was wearing a red sweater. When his "fort" is opened it was a red blanket. When Bruce Willis's character goes into his office in the basement, the door knob (as you noted) is red. I'm Feeling Much better now.
A friend of my mom saw this in theaters and spoiled the ending for me before I saw it. That didn't matter because it's so well crafted. Funny enough the night we watched this for the first time my sister had us pause it so she could use the bathroom. Mom decided she was cold and needed her bathrobe. The layout of our house had the bathroom situated in a small hallway between the bedrooms and the living room. My sister opened the bathroom door in time to see our mom walking past in her pink bathrobe. She let out such a scream and fell back into the bathroom slamming the door behind her. We still chuckle about it.
A master class in subtle story telling. Fun Fact: The Latin phrase Cole speaks in the church when he first meets Malcolm, "De profundis clamo ad te domine," translates to "Out of the depths, I cry to you, O Lord." These are the first few words of Psalm 130.
In my opinion, this is M. Night Shyamalan's best film. Loved your reaction so much, I've seen this movie a hundred times and your reaction still managed to make me almost cry all my skincare products off of my face
I love this movie. Just watching you cry was enough to put me right back into my first time seeing it and trying not cry in front of my girlfriend until I realized she was already bawling. Sending you love. Lost my dad last year and your channel has been a bright spot for me since then.
Great reaction. I went to see this in the theater at an advanced screening, not knowing anything about it. It was a packed house and right around the time Dr. Crowe's ring falls to the floor, you started to hear people all over the theater whisper, "Oh my God," as they realized what was going on with him. I fell in love with it and watched it over and over again. I think it's damn near perfect. Beautifully, shot, scored and acted. It's still in my top 5 all time favorite films.

This is totally one of those movies that I wish I could watch for the first time again - so watching you watch it for the first time unspoiled was SO ENJOYABLE.
The thing I hate about most horror is the lack of emotional resolution for the characters. These characters go through absolute hell and they all come out with a sense of closure. It gives the horror elements so much more meaning.
Bruce Willis was in one of my favorite movies "The Fifth Element" a completely crazy/wacky scifi action.. along with the awesome Gary Oldman, Chris Tucker, and the gorgeous Milla Jovovich.

That little twist at the end was so brilliant. I remember when I first saw this everyone in the theatre let out a collective gasp. And on top of that, the scares, and the feels. One of my favorite all time films. Probably M Night's best film.
Haley Joel Osment was nominated for an Oscar for this performance, and he would have gotten it, if bloody Michael Caine hadn't also been nominated. Caine himself said when he accepted the award, that when he saw Haley's performance, he figured his own chance at the Oscar was over.
Actually, it's one of my favorite Oscar moments, because Mr. Caine goes on to spend his entire speech praising all the other nominees, which also included Michael Clarke Duncan for The Green Mile, Tom Cruise for Magnolia and Jude Law for The Talented Mr. Ripley. It was an amazingly selfless gesture, especially since he was unable to attend the ceremony the first time he won an Oscar, and I'll bet it meant the world to the others. Toni Colette did what I think almost no real actress can do.... the level of worry, and commitment to everything for Haley Joel Osment, that last scene in the car.... she was nominated for an Oscar for this movie, and so was Haley Joel! They both lost though, but well, it was deserved! I love Toni's movies, she's great, like almost no one else, and SO underrated for her level of talent

I was gonna say! Good for you on picking up on the "red" symbols. I only learned about it after reading an article about the movie sometime later. I was just TOO stunned w/the BIG reveal to even think about anything else.
The creators were worried that the "I see dead people" scene might give it away since it cuts to Malcolm immediately after he said it and after his descriptions. But, few if any picked up on it. I certainly didn't. Ashleigh figured it out a good five seconds before the moment I did. I'm feeling much better now.
@C Parton my dad said the same. He leaned over to me when BW first showed up after the shooting scene and whispered, "He's dead.". I was like, "What?! You're crazy.". After the movie, I asked how he knew. He said it was based on where BW got shot and that it was black blood coming out. It doesn't take long to die from that if you don't get medical attention fast. Given he'd worked in a VA hospital for ages, I figured he knew what he was talking about. So I kind of had the twist spoiled but I just thought he was fucking with me. Like he did that shit from time to time.

@C Parton I knew someone who said they knew he was dead the whole time, not because of the type of wound from the gunshot or anything, but simply because "He got shot, so he's dead." She was - to put it politely - not that bright however, so I honestly think she just didn't pick up on the rest of the clues that initially misdirect you to think he's alive: taking notes, carrying his satchel, wearing different clothes sometimes . And the restaurant scene where he reaches for the bill and she almost snatches it away (but really, she's just in pain and wants to go home), then she looks at him for a split second (she was looking up at the people laughing in the background), she seems to be reacting to him talking (she's just trying to keep control and not to break down in the middle of all those people). The entire movie is honestly a great piece of misdirection.
When it first came out in theaters and I realized at the end that Bruce was dead, I had to sit through the movie a second time to rewatch the film now knowing he was dead and unseen by the people he thought he was interacting with. Flipped my entire understanding of the movie - very clever!

It could be good, but a good story has an over-all arc involving the main character; it should show them going through change(s) as the result of the events/people they're dealing with (good &/or bad). Otherwise you just have a series of vignettes involving other characters and *their* changes. Maybe the sequel is set just several years later, in HJO's character's mid-to-late teens, showing him helping out some 'departeds' and their families ... & is having a problem with one spirit who's 'acting out' a lot. Then something seriously bad happens and he's forced to confront the fact that *some* spirits *are* in fact malevolent & violent, for no apparent reason except that they seem to *enjoy* being malevolent & violent! (Basically, 'demons in training'.)
It could be a broadcast series, something along the lines of "The Dead Zone" so he'd get to help a confused spirit with a different story in each episode! I'm feeling much better now.
I saw this in the theater several months after it was released. The best thing was somehow no one spoiled the ending. So even tho we didn't have a chance to see it sooner (rural America) it was still a shock to us. Sitting with an audience in the final scene as people begin to grasp that Malcolm has been dead this entire time was a crazy experience....people crying out, "No!" and "What?" and gasps of shock. My best friend was sitting next to me and just as reality hit me she grabbed my arm. BOOM. Fantastic movie.
You should try "Identity" at some point. It's a great psychological thriller/murder-mystery that totally fits into October. Everyone wants to know if the person who raised us is proud of us. Parents/grandparents/guardians should say it more throughout our teenage years and adulthood. We hear it as children usually as we learn life skills but never as we learn knowledge and social skills.
My buddy hated me for ruining the ending of Identity half-way through, when we watched it on the sneak preview showing the Thursday before the official release. It is still a favorite movie for both of us, he just hates that I can see endings and pick up on clues way faster than him.

Whenever I re-watch this movie, I discover new things that give pointers to the solution. It always smacks me hard, how Cole suffers through his special talent. And how this little boy still retains enough sanity for at least a modicum of a life. At the end, I also always cry. But then, I can always say: "I'm feeling much better now" when I got through my crying fit.

I'm one of those fortunate folks to have seen this in the theater when it was first released, and I went in totally blind: I had literally no idea what the movie was going to be about, let alone any preparation for the twist ending. There are a lot of older movies with famous twists (e.g. Planet of the Apes) where I wasn't so fortunate.

And this movie has so many layers too. The one line that gets me every time is 'They only see what they want to see.' How many assumptions did we make during this movie? The Malcomb survived, that he worked a lot, that him and cole's mom were talking, that Malcom's wife was angry? That still gets me every time.
This movie is always remembered for its twist ending and being scary but honestly it always makes me cry. Between the scene with Cole and his mom in the car and Malcolm telling his wife she was never second… I cry every time.

If you want to avoid tears, skip "Pay It Forward", starring Haley Joel Osmet. I'm thinking, after all your scary reviews, you're going to need something different, something more on the light-hearted side of things. "Second Hand Lions", also starring Haley Joel Osmet, should help smooth over the stress of Hallow-Beans.

for another good Bruce Willis/Shyamalan time, I highly recommend Unbreakable. I think if it had come out in the past decade, it'd win all the oscars because of how much superhero films have blown up recently. it was really ahead of its time and one of Willis' best dramatic performances along with this one in The Sixth Sense imo.

Yes...my grandma passed away almost ten years ago, and the hurt and sadness still pops up every now and again. It's healthy to have a good cry over these things from time to time. I'm feeling much better now.
My grandmother died nearly 40 years ago and it still hits hard now and then. We take everyone in our lives for granted but when they're gone they're gone and you wish you could have one more day with them.
I have to admit, when I saw this in theater even *then* I didn't get it, one of the few times I've felt just completely blindsided by a twist. Took me like 30 seconds to make sense of what I was seeing lol. Brilliant film.
What made this twist so good is the amount of hints that were just cleverly couched in believable situations so that when the twist hits it all "clicks". Not just "and it was aliens", or "and it isn't 200 years ago", etc. A twist for twist's sake just makes you go "awwww come on!". It could literally end without it and you wouldn't feel any different. This movie spent a lot of time setting it up, so the payoff is very satisfactory.
Masterfully is the correct word. It was careful not to cheat you and it still holds up after you know thr twist. Take this as opposed to the famous "Usual Suspects" twist, which basically tramples on everything you've watched. In my opinion, that was a cheap and lazy twist.
I'm generally kind of a cynical person about entertainment, but for some reason when I go to movies that I think I'm going to like, my brain suspends disbelief almost entirely. The twist with the doctor being dead completely and utterly was like a 2x4 whacked across my head. This movie had a huge impact on me and helped me to visualize how life might look to children (I have 4 kids) and helped me understand a little more the way my brain was working when I was a kid.

The scene where he tells his mom the story about watching her dance always gets me. My mom did that with me. We were having a fight and she didn't go to my senior theater awards ceremony, or so I thought. She was in the balcony. She came even though we were fighting. I love my mom.

When the twist was revealed, my immediate first thought was, “They cheated.” Not only did it not cheat, but it has a montage to show that you just weren’t paying attention. Brilliant movie. I’m feeling much better now.
I had the exact same reaction. I had to go see the movie a second time to see just how carefully they baked it into every scene.
This film exploits us knowing that all films have edits and transitions, so we just assume "certain things" happened off-screen to keep the pace of the story, instead of them never happening (like certain conversations, introductions etc).
Funnily enough, Ashleigh was 1000% paying attention. She called out every detail that the montage reminds the audience about.
Well, they kinda cheated. Didn't he break the window at that store? I guess ghosts aren't non-corporeal in this movie, but that was a big reason I didn't suspect he was dead the entire time.

When The Sixth Sense was first released on video and DVD back in '99, it came with a little supplemental feature called "Rules And Clues" where Shyamalan and Frank Marshall talk about all the little clues to look out for while watching the movie. One of them is that the color red foreshadows a ghostly event. Every time Cole encounters a ghost, the color red is shown significantly beforehand. Ashleigh, you actually picked up on that on your first viewing. Another great reason why this movie has such a lasting impact.

This film really stands up to at least two viewings. Now that you know the secret, you can fully appreciate Olivia Williams' performance as Anna Crowe. On first watch, she seemed angry. On the second watch, you'll see a person in great pain from loss. She should have gotten all the awards for her subtle performance.

Very observant about all the red. The color red appears whenever the spirit world and the real world are in conflict. The DVD extras has a whole featurette about it. It makes any rewatches more interesting.
It's really chilling when you go back and see all of the red everywhere.
Adding to that, Shyamalan loves using color for symbolism.
Even the ink in Cole's train of thought writing is red.

"I'm feeling much better now" is honestly the scene that sticks out to me the most of the whole movie. I haven't seen this movie in ages but that little girl and her story has NEVER left me and i'm still shook.
And can we just take a moment to appreciate the ABSOLUTELY AMAZING performance by Haley Joel? It blows my mind to think that he was a child actor maybe 10 or 11 years old!
And yes, nearly all of us, including me, were surprised by the Twist.
The thing is, NOT ONLY did Shyamalan manage to hide the thing in plain sight, so that a majority of people never see it coming; but also it _works;_ it's not some tacked on trick, you can go back and rewatch the movie, and it is completely consistent throughout.
And his work in Second Hand Lions and Silicon Valley. They're such different characters...

No one knew he was dead. It was one of the best plot twists in cinematic history. In fact it was so good that it set the bar too high for director M. Night Shyamalan and he has struggled to put anything out that is even comparable.
The closest he has come in my opinion is Unbreakable and Split, maybe Signs. Everything else really hasn't been that good. Of course that is my opinion.

I still remember walking out of the theatre with my husband after watching this movie. We had the same reaction as you. No one knew Bruce was dead. That’s the ultimate surprise. Great movie indeed.
The Sixth Sense is about letting go and move on. The ending completely sums it up because of its emotional dialogue; the score and the themes.
Also, when the ghosts were angry or upset the air got cold. When he found out he was dead you could see his wife's breath. This was a masterpiece, he was able to hide the truth until the end but gave the audience clues all the way through the movie.
One of my favorite movies that Osment has been in is Second Hand Lions. Fun fact: they filmed all the scenes in chronological order (for once) to capture Osment's growth. He was visibly taller & lankier by the end of the movie, and his voice had changed.
...A movie well worth seeing once you get out of Hallowbeans.
And now you can understand the meme of him laying in bed "I see dumb people, they are everywhere and don't even know it!!!"
Sixth Sense is the perfect movie for someone who's house may or may not be haunted, to watch. I watched the Directors commentary for this movie and M Night Shyamalan said that every time a spirit interacts with the physical world that object is red. When Haley Joel Osment's character is attacked by the spirit in the "dungeon" he was wearing a red sweater. When his "fort" is opened it was a red blanket. When Bruce Willis's character goes into his office in the basement, the door knob (as you noted) is red.

A friend of my mom saw this in theaters and spoiled the ending for me before I saw it. That didn't matter because it's so well crafted.
Funny enough the night we watched this for the first time my sister had us pause it so she could use the bathroom. Mom decided she was cold and needed her bathrobe. The layout of our house had the bathroom situated in a small hallway between the bedrooms and the living room. My sister opened the bathroom door in time to see our mom walking past in her pink bathrobe. She let out such a scream and fell back into the bathroom slamming the door behind her. We still chuckle about it.
A master class in subtle story telling.
Fun Fact: The Latin phrase Cole speaks in the church when he first meets Malcolm, "De profundis clamo ad te domine," translates to "Out of the depths, I cry to you, O Lord." These are the first few words of Psalm 130.

Great reaction. I went to see this in the theater at an advanced screening, not knowing anything about it. It was a packed house and right around the time Dr. Crowe's ring falls to the floor, you started to hear people all over the theater whisper, "Oh my God," as they realized what was going on with him. I fell in love with it and watched it over and over again. I think it's damn near perfect. Beautifully, shot, scored and acted. It's still in my top 5 all time favorite films.
Haley Joel Osmet is also in another great movie, for after HalloBeans.

This is totally one of those movies that I wish I could watch for the first time again - so watching you watch it for the first time unspoiled was SO ENJOYABLE.

The thing I hate about most horror is the lack of emotional resolution for the characters. These characters go through absolute hell and they all come out with a sense of closure. It gives the horror elements so much more meaning.
Bruce Willis was in one of my favorite movies "The Fifth Element" a completely crazy/wacky scifi action.. along with the awesome Gary Oldman, Chris Tucker, and the gorgeous Milla Jovovich.
Chris Tucker is *so* wild in that.

That little twist at the end was so brilliant. I remember when I first saw this everyone in the theatre let out a collective gasp. And on top of that, the scares, and the feels. One of my favorite all time films. Probably M Night's best film.
Haley Joel Osment was nominated for an Oscar for this performance, and he would have gotten it, if bloody Michael Caine hadn't also been nominated. Caine himself said when he accepted the award, that when he saw Haley's performance, he figured his own chance at the Oscar was over.

Actually, it's one of my favorite Oscar moments, because Mr. Caine goes on to spend his entire speech praising all the other nominees, which also included Michael Clarke Duncan for The Green Mile, Tom Cruise for Magnolia and Jude Law for The Talented Mr. Ripley. It was an amazingly selfless gesture, especially since he was unable to attend the ceremony the first time he won an Oscar, and I'll bet it meant the world to the others.

Toni Colette did what I think almost no real actress can do.... the level of worry, and commitment to everything for Haley Joel Osment, that last scene in the car.... she was nominated for an Oscar for this movie, and so was Haley Joel! They both lost though, but well, it was deserved! I love Toni's movies, she's great, like almost no one else, and SO underrated for her level of talent

The creators were worried that the "I see dead people" scene might give it away since it cuts to Malcolm immediately after he said it and after his descriptions. But, few if any picked up on it. I certainly didn't. Ashleigh figured it out a good five seconds before the moment I did.

@C Parton my dad said the same. He leaned over to me when BW first showed up after the shooting scene and whispered, "He's dead.". I was like, "What?! You're crazy.". After the movie, I asked how he knew. He said it was based on where BW got shot and that it was black blood coming out. It doesn't take long to die from that if you don't get medical attention fast. Given he'd worked in a VA hospital for ages, I figured he knew what he was talking about. So I kind of had the twist spoiled but I just thought he was fucking with me. Like he did that shit from time to time.

@C Parton I knew someone who said they knew he was dead the whole time, not because of the type of wound from the gunshot or anything, but simply because "He got shot, so he's dead." She was - to put it politely - not that bright however, so I honestly think she just didn't pick up on the rest of the clues that initially misdirect you to think he's alive: taking notes, carrying his satchel, wearing different clothes sometimes . And the restaurant scene where he reaches for the bill and she almost snatches it away (but really, she's just in pain and wants to go home), then she looks at him for a split second (she was looking up at the people laughing in the background), she seems to be reacting to him talking (she's just trying to keep control and not to break down in the middle of all those people).
The entire movie is honestly a great piece of misdirection.

When it first came out in theaters and I realized at the end that Bruce was dead, I had to sit through the movie a second time to rewatch the film now knowing he was dead and unseen by the people he thought he was interacting with. Flipped my entire understanding of the movie - very clever!
I was SO SURE they had messed up somehow. That there was zero possibility that there wasn't a mistake I would have notice throughout the movie. I was wrong, lol.

It could be good, but a good story has an over-all arc involving the main character; it should show them going through change(s) as the result of the events/people they're dealing with (good &/or bad). Otherwise you just have a series of vignettes involving other characters and *their* changes.
Maybe the sequel is set just several years later, in HJO's character's mid-to-late teens, showing him helping out some 'departeds' and their families ... & is having a problem with one spirit who's 'acting out' a lot. Then something seriously bad happens and he's forced to confront the fact that *some* spirits *are* in fact malevolent & violent, for no apparent reason except that they seem to *enjoy* being malevolent & violent! (Basically, 'demons in training'.)
It could be a broadcast series, something along the lines of "The Dead Zone" so he'd get to help a confused spirit with a different story in each episode! I'm feeling much better now.

I saw this in the theater several months after it was released. The best thing was somehow no one spoiled the ending. So even tho we didn't have a chance to see it sooner (rural America) it was still a shock to us. Sitting with an audience in the final scene as people begin to grasp that Malcolm has been dead this entire time was a crazy experience....people crying out, "No!" and "What?" and gasps of shock. You should try "Identity" at some point. It's a great psychological thriller/murder-mystery that totally fits into October.
Everyone wants to know if the person who raised us is proud of us. Parents/grandparents/guardians should say it more throughout our teenage years and adulthood. We hear it as children usually as we learn life skills but never as we learn knowledge and social skills.
I love "Identity." Plus, I don't think anyone has ever reacted to it.

My buddy hated me for ruining the ending of Identity half-way through, when we watched it on the sneak preview showing the Thursday before the official release.
It is still a favorite movie for both of us, he just hates that I can see endings and pick up on clues way faster than him.
Identity was amazing! It totally freaked me out when I was like 12 haha. Really good twist as well!
I don't think many of us were prepared for the emotional effect this movie would have on us. The scares I signed up for, the tears.....I did not.

Whenever I re-watch this movie, I discover new things that give pointers to the solution.
It always smacks me hard, how Cole suffers through his special talent.
And how this little boy still retains enough sanity for at least a modicum of a life.
At the end, I also always cry. But then, I can always say: "I'm feeling much better now" when I got through my crying fit.
I love that you're able to approach these blind & give us a genuinely fresh reaction, but I will never understand how you have managed to avoid *all the most famous spoilers in pop culture history*.
I'm one of those fortunate folks to have seen this in the theater when it was first released, and I went in totally blind: I had literally no idea what the movie was going to be about, let alone any preparation for the twist ending. There are a lot of older movies with famous twists (e.g. Planet of the Apes) where I wasn't so fortunate.
13:52 Cole's mom is played by Toni Collette. She's famous for her starring role in "Hereditary" (note that one for a future Hallow-beans), but I really liked her in "Little Miss Sunshine".

Toni Collette elevates every single thing she's in. My introduction to her was Muriel's Wedding.
And don't forget her small but hilarious role in Knives Out.

I’m feeling much better now. I think it’s because you got to join the rest of us in one of the best twist endings of all time.
And this movie has so many layers too. The one line that gets me every time is 'They only see what they want to see.' How many assumptions did we make during this movie? The Malcomb survived, that he worked a lot, that him and cole's mom were talking, that Malcom's wife was angry? That still gets me every time.
This movie is always remembered for its twist ending and being scary but honestly it always makes me cry. Between the scene with Cole and his mom in the car and Malcolm telling his wife she was never second… I cry every time.
I'm feeling better now that you've discovered the genius of Sixth Sense. Toni Colette and all the cast is wonderful!!

I didn't cry first time I watched it, but you're so real in your reactions, that I started crying with you!! I have always liked Bruce Willis, but it wasn't until "The Fifth Element" that I fell love with him!! You should add that to your list after Hallobeans month!! OH!!!! And you are SO observant!!!! Catching the red items. I learned of that years after when little secrets about this movie you didn't know started showing on TH-cam.
If you want to avoid tears, skip "Pay It Forward", starring Haley Joel Osmet.
I'm thinking, after all your scary reviews, you're going to need something different, something more on the light-hearted side of things. "Second Hand Lions", also starring Haley Joel Osmet, should help smooth over the stress of Hallow-Beans.

for another good Bruce Willis/Shyamalan time, I highly recommend Unbreakable. I think if it had come out in the past decade, it'd win all the oscars because of how much superhero films have blown up recently. it was really ahead of its time and one of Willis' best dramatic performances along with this one in The Sixth Sense imo.
Oh yeah ! And is a shame she have seen Split before Unbreakable.

Yes...my grandma passed away almost ten years ago, and the hurt and sadness still pops up every now and again. It's healthy to have a good cry over these things from time to time. I'm feeling much better now.
My grandmother died nearly 40 years ago and it still hits hard now and then. We take everyone in our lives for granted but when they're gone they're gone and you wish you could have one more day with them.

When the wedding band drops is when I knew. The most masterfully done film twist I’ve ever seen.
I have to admit, when I saw this in theater even *then* I didn't get it, one of the few times I've felt just completely blindsided by a twist. Took me like 30 seconds to make sense of what I was seeing lol. Brilliant film.
What made this twist so good is the amount of hints that were just cleverly couched in believable situations so that when the twist hits it all "clicks".
Not just "and it was aliens", or "and it isn't 200 years ago", etc.
A twist for twist's sake just makes you go "awwww come on!". It could literally end without it and you wouldn't feel any different.
This movie spent a lot of time setting it up, so the payoff is very satisfactory.

Masterfully is the correct word. It was careful not to cheat you and it still holds up after you know thr twist.
Take this as opposed to the famous "Usual Suspects" twist, which basically tramples on everything you've watched. In my opinion, that was a cheap and lazy twist.

I'm generally kind of a cynical person about entertainment, but for some reason when I go to movies that I think I'm going to like, my brain suspends disbelief almost entirely. The twist with the doctor being dead completely and utterly was like a 2x4 whacked across my head. This movie had a huge impact on me and helped me to visualize how life might look to children (I have 4 kids) and helped me understand a little more the way my brain was working when I was a kid.
