As a former member of the homeless community I would like to thank you for the incredible compassion you showed in this video. It sucks to feel forgotten but seeing someone in better shape pour out like that is very encouraging.

The late, great Harold Ramis, who wrote this movie and many others, also appeared in many of them, including Ghostbusters and Stripes and played the near-sighted doctor who looks at Bill Murray's x-rays in this movie. He should be right up there with John Hughes, Steven Spielberg, etc., when you note a great writer/director/producer in the credits. In Harold Ramis' case, he was also a great dry comedy performer.
Sadly the experience of making this movie did drive these two friends apart and they didn't resolve their issues until *just* before Ramis's death.
@@CraigKostelecky Really? I remember hearing that Ramis knew Murray so well that Ramis decided to shoot the scenes in reverse chronological order because Ramis knew that Murray loses enthusiasm and energy as production goes on.
@@CraigKostelecky yeah that’s too bad. I think it was an example to two pals who are just too much alike, and had known each other for so long that they knew how to push each other’s buttons just right. But I could be wrong.
He actually wasn't supposed to play the doctor, but the actor they got mysteriously didn't show up so he just threw on the lab coat.

It's been estimated that Bill Murray's character spent nearly 40 years in the cycle.
apparently there's a dvd commentary where Ramis estimated a real-time duration of 10 years but someone else said 40 so i guess between 10 and 40 years

Ramis said he figured about 10 years, but the gospel number is 33 years and 350 days. That's based on the skills he displayed and how long it would take on average to master them.
The original script had it written as 10,000 years, but Ramis said was that it took at least 10 years to master anything, so it'd take at least 30 to 40 years to learn the skills Bill Murray showed. Some confused this quote into thinking that Ramis said it took 10 years. I think it's far more reasonable to believe 10,000, which took from another fable and was the original written intent. Depends on who you want to take the word of, the original script writer, or what Ramis pulled out of his butt 20 years after he finished the movie after being specifically anchor biased to the number 10.
@SonAndHeir I feel like after 10,000 years, you'd lose all sense of humanity. Unless he just entered a coma for most of it, he'd slowly stop seeing other humans as living beings, and start doing darker and darker things to them, till it ended up making saw movies look tame.
I imagine after 10,000 years of the same day over and over, even the nicest, strongest person would either be a gibbering wreck, or a mass murdering monster.

I'm an elderly millennial (39) and I know what it is. "So what's the 411" was a line in multiple shows and movies in the 90s. I think it's literally just an exposure thing. She's never seen any these movies so I'm not surprised that she wouldn't know it.
411 was similar to 911, but was the number to call for information.
Dang, now I feel really old. Around here we also had the exact time number. Your watch got late or forward? You had to dial a number to find out if there was nobody else around.

We watched this in my high school Psychology class.
Bill can be hard to work with, and they actually took advantage of that fact when they filmed this movie. The director chose to film this movie in reverse chronological order because he knew Bill would get more agitated as production went on and it would show in his performance.

He came out there with try to straighten up as close with blood on his nose! Billy doesn't take any crap. He's from the original cast of SATURDAY NIGHT with the Saturday Night Player's...LONG BEFORE the show was ever called Saturday Night LIVE. The fight started right around the area of John Belushi's dressing room. Next thing you know they>>>Gilda Radner and Jayne Newman were yelling and cheering him on kick his ass Billy...kick his ass! They're both pretty big guys over 6ft tall each duking it out & wrestling on the floor until they broke it up! Chevy Chase has two inches on him in height but Bill Murray dropped him! I SAW that show that night! HE fucking deserves it! LOL 😂 Because even now people say when he's hosting just having him in that building is tense and like a freakshow. When he sits in with the writers he's still nasty towards everybody. Fuck him! He's not the only Five Timers Jacket holder on the planet! Tom Hanks has one and HE is known as one of the NICEST people in to work with. IF you're getting your ass beat on your first return as a guest host to the show that MADE YOU... Are you sure? Normally, movies shoot scenes from the same location in succession, and here it would be even more important than usual because everybody and everything would have to be set up in exactly the same way. Weather changes would also screw up outdoor scenes. I've heard Bill Murray being commended for switching back and forth in his mood depending on where he was in the movie.
Phil was a narcissist who did everything only for himself; only for what HE could get out of it. Even when he started to fall in love with Rita he was only interested in the relationship for what HE could get out of it. It wasn't until he truly knew how to love others more than himself and his motivations be totally selfless was he able to finally break the curse.
Nice try pushing altruism. He discovered how much richer life was when he focused on the values he had in common with those around him. Altruism rots.

“What About Bob” is an underrated movie. Probably my favorite Bill Murray movie. Knowing how much you like him, you’re gonna love this one.

22:40 I teared up at the end. My family taught me about homeless people by helping a couple local homeless men when we would see them. One man didn't like it but would take the food and other stuff we would bring. My mom told me he use to be a lawyer until he lost his wife and newborn in a house fire. He went nuts and just started walking the streets. She said it had happened when she was still a teen, long before I was born. Eventually we didn't see him in the same places anymore. I don't know if he got help or died. I hope he's happy where ever he is. Thanks for the reaction.
Holy cow! I lived in a place where this was exactly the story I heard about a homeless guy I saw often. Can you please respond to my question because this just can’t be coincidental. What city/town was this in? This would definitely seal it. And thanks in advance becauseI just have to know.
Fun facts about this movie: The main square scenes were shot in Woodstock, Illinois as the real Punxsutawney wasn't large or photogenic enough for the movie. The chap Bill does the Heimlich to is Brian Doyle-Murray, Bill's older brother. When Bill is talking softly to Rita on the bed, the words Bill speaks are the same words Bill spoke to his wife when she fell seriously ill. It was such a possibly emotional scene that the director virtually cleared the set so Bill would feel less pressured.
Sadly, Harold Ramis & Bill didn't see eye-to-eye during filming. Bill wanted to focus on the philosophical aspects of the story, but Harold was al about the comedy. It led to a spat that saw the two not speak to each other until shortly before Harold's death in 2014.
Ooh, before I forget. An early draft of the script had Bill visiting the library each 'day' and reading a page from a book. That way he could keep track of how many days he'd been there. There's no definitive answer to that question, but estimates range from 6 months to 50 years and more.
He was definitely in there for multiple years, if not dozens or hundreds. Learning to play the piano like that would take multiple years, even if you practiced for hours every day.

Harold Ramis is actually one of the radio hosts he hears every morning as well!
Brian Doyle Murray has been in a lot of movies, including many of Bill's. He was the guy in charge of the caddies in CaddyShack.
And Egon from Ghostbusters (Harold Ramis) is the doctor in Punxsutawny who can't find anything physically wrong with Phil.

The theater where I worked as a projectionist, until Covid closed us, has an annual 24hr. Groundhog Day marathon. Back to back showings of the film. Those who make it the entire 24hrs. receive 12 passes to the the theater. It usually sells out every year.

That wasn’t a sad note to end it on, it was a compassionate note. We have had a major increase in the homeless population here where I live in Oregon and while you should be wise and alert about your surroundings, most of my interactions with them have been really humbling. They are just people, and a little attention, a bagged lunch, and 5 dollars in toiletries can go a long way.
I’ve been waiting so long for Groundhog Day but your story ended up being my favorite part.

You're a good person, Ashleigh. :) We just lost one of our homeless community members recently here in Denver to the same reason. That part of my brain just gets so angry now at how cruel our society is. Like, I don't care what happened that landed someone in a poor circumstance - everyone deserves their basic needs like warm shelter and food. We have so much abundance in this country, there is no reason not to share it with all who need it except greed. Even if they do drugs or committed a crime or whatever people freak out about - we still give shelter and food to people in prison. We should give it to everyone.
Leroy is surly smiling down at you. Despite being homeless at the end of his life, he is remembered and thought of fondly. While many would have walked past him and thought nothing of him, he still managed to touch someone's life...your life. By you telling his story, he will live on and perhaps...maybe...touch someone else as well. God bless.

A timely movie review right now would be “Trading Places” the second best movie about wall street and shorting stocks.
Yo Trading Places used to show on basic cable (grew up with bunny ears dudes...BUNNY EARS) back in the 90’s. One of my FAVORITE Bill Murray movies EVERRRRR. Seriously! How do I get you to watch this one? ☝️ ☝️ my mother and I quote quite a couple lines to each other every now and then.

The mayor was played by Bill’s brother, Brian Doyle-Murray. He shows up in a lot of things but the one you probably have seen him in is Chevy Chase’s boss in National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.
The little gold bars on the nightstand are probably chocolates. In some fancier hotels, they will have someone come in to your hotel room to turn down your sheets and leave a little chocolate on your pillow so that you will have ‘sweet dreams’.
Probably why you were so fearful of having an injury to your kneecap is that part of your body is filled with nerves and if you injure it in just the right way it is the most painful thing you probably will ever feel short of passing a kidney stone (or giving birth).
He's also the Kamp Komfort clerk in the first National Lampoon's Vacation movie. :)
He's also the voice of the Flying Dutchman in Spongebob...
He is also Noah Vanderhoff in Wayne's World. That is the one I recognize him most in since I used to watch that movie everyday for a while as a kid.
He's also the governor / former-mayor in the Ghostbusters video game (but not the movie) unless I'm mistaken.

Kingpin(1996) is another HILARIOUS movie will Bill Murray, but this time he plays the role of.......... an asshole. He's the main bad guy in it. I know you're probably tired of seeing him play the same role but watch this sometime after February, you won't regret it. 🤣

Another movie that brought him to Western Pennsylvania. Legitimately. They filmed on location throughout the region using all of the bowling alleys over several months. Location shots throughout the countryside in several counties.
Billy Murray actually played a really nice character in “What About Bob”. You should watch that as well.

Andie MacDowell - SEX LIES AND VIDEOTAPE. This is THE performance of her career. Also GREEN CARD. She followed those awesome performances as a jerk in FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL. OBJECT OF BEAUTY is a pretty fun film - semi-comedy where we're reminded body-parts are just, well, body parts. We all got 'em... GREYSTOKE is a horrible stain on her career NOT because of her - she's about perfect - but the producers dubbed her entire voice for some cotton-candy waif's voice... they ruined that film with that decision. She has a lot of really weirdo films and strong performances.
I actually really liked her in Michael. Green Card was the 1st movie that I thought she looked really pretty in.

I’m old enough to remember telephone books which were printed on _paper_ of all things!
Amusingly enough, I've worked for three separate services that use those three-digit numbers, so I kind if have most of them memorized, now. XD I worked for cell phone service, which used 611, relay for the deaf and hard of hearing - 711, and currently work for 311 - general city services, which works directly with 811 - having the state come out and mark your underground utility lines so you can dig, 211 - state health and human services, and 911. The only one I don't know is 511. Is that a thing? 😆

Yes, 411, known as calling "Information". It was even listed in the front of the phone book along with 911. Particularly useful to find out of state numbers, since most local numbers would actually be in the phone book. Though it was handy when you didn't have a phone book handy, or if you believed a persons number had changed since the printing.
Everybody gets emotional during the old man death scene. The point of the scene was to prove to Phil that he wasn't God. Despite his knowledge of the present or how many times he tried, he couldn't save him.

FYI The Mayor in this movie is Brian Doyle-Murray, he also played Bill Murray dad in “Scrooged” but he’s actually Bill Murray’s older brother in real life. The guy who played Bills younger brother in “Scrooged” is his younger brother in real life. They’re all related.

Here's some trivia you'd love then. Venkman from Ghostbusters was a role written for John Belushi, but his early death made Ramis turn to Murray. When the artist was told to come up with the ghost known as Slimer, he couldn't come up with any ideas. He stayed up all night doing massive amounts of cocaine and says he hallucinated that Belushi was there and helped him through the process, Slimer is based on Belushi from the Animal House scene. The hallucination supposedly pointed at the cocaine and said, "That stuff will kill ya".

Ashleigh, was Leroy an African American gentleman about 6'2"-ish, maybe mid to late 50s, who definitely gave off the vibe that he could have possibly been a teacher in the past? I worked in midtown Memphis for ten years and knew a homeless man named Leroy who fit that description. I'm wondering if we knew the same man.
I have been close to being homeless and your story touched my heart. There was a 10 year stretch from when I got out the Army and when I got my license to drive truck. The problem many of the homeless have is the lack of hope. When there is no hope life is useless. Take care young lady (my granddaughters are your age).
This movie is optimistic in a way that most art doesn't even approach. It assumes that, given enough chances, people will choose to be the kindest version of themselves. Actual Christian and Buddhist theologians have discussed this movie as a teaching tool.
Also, I recommend Lost in Translation as a movie that trades on the "Bill Murray persona" in an interesting way, as a very funny person who is tired of being funny.

He eventually starred in 2003’s “Lost in Translation” and earned a Best Actor nomination; playing a washed-up TV actor reduced to working in Japanese commercials.

I'm a part of local homeless ministry here in Orlando. I know just how you feel. I honestly have met some of the most interesting, talanted people that where homeless for what ever reason. Sadly in the decade plus that I've been involved, I've also seen hundreads (yes plural of hundred) of them die, and it ain't easy.
411 is the number you use to dial for the "information directory". You call when you need to get a phone number.
"Hello, for what city please."
"Business or home?"
"Please wait while we get that number for you"
Then an automated voice would give you the phone number twice.
Yeah, and it used to be a free service. You know, back when customer service was a thing...

Yep. When I was a kid, our favorite restaurant used to put my grandfather's leftover steak in a little foil bag with a dog printed on it. I think there used to be some kind of social awkwardness associated with taking home your leftovers, so we had to pretend they were for the dog.

There are three stories about how long Bill Murray's character spends reliving Groundhog Day. The director, writer and others had different ideas. One said 10 years, another said 10,000 days (30 years) but in the original script, it was 10,000 years (more than 3 and 1/2 million individual days relived).
Harold Ramis reportedly said otherwise but yes in the original script yes.
Would he be able to become a "doctor" in 10 years from the resources available, one day at a time to understand what he is reading, and research in a field he knows nothing about? I think 30 years is a minimum.
It's been awhile since I've seen the whole movie. I'm trying to remember all the skills he learned... Piano, French, ice carving, changing a tire...
I think for the sake of a learning curve 10,000 sounds excessive.
It's definitely 10,000 years. That was the original intent and nothing is stated in the film. So, 10,000 years it is.

At first he takes advantage of this situation- he steals from armored trucks, eats donuts nonstop, lies his way into bed with strangers-- but eventually, through time, trial and error, he perfects his self with creative self-improvement tasks and compassionately helps others. Once he becomes the best possible version of Phil Connors, he is released from his temporal prison.
The main point of Buddhism is that we must continue to reincarnate until we find enlightenment. This concept keeps us living out many lives determined by our actions. Once our ignorance and ego are destroyed by our actions and awareness, we become true, interconnected reality, which frees us from the cycle and into heavenly nirvana.
In short- we try it again, without the sarcasm.
I like that take on the film, I'm also in the camp that it has taken him multiple years if not decades to get good at some of those self-help tasks and he's been here nearly a century
It's a Christmas Carol. It's about "do unto others..."
At least he's got that going for him.

Check out another of Harold Ramis' films: "Multiplicity". Michael Keaton stars as an overworked contractor who has himself cloned to help alleviate stress at work and home. Naturally, hijinks ensue.
If you want to see something very different from Bill Murray, check out 1984's "The Razor's Edge". It's a heavy drama where Murray plays a disillusioned WWI vet who tries to find meaning in life after seeing so much death.
That one also stars Andie MacDowell.

The guy who sounded familiar is Brian Doyle Murray, Bill's brother. He's in a few of Bill's movies.
The fake persona with the cowboy hat was him doing Clint Eastwood, who Marty McFly also copied in Back To The Future 3.
She probably remembers Brian as the caddy boss from Caddyshack.

It's when people tell stories like the story you have Leroy that gets me to do what I do... my job is to do volunteer work full-time for the rest of my life.

Obviously "Stripes" is a must-add to your watch list. One that I haven't seen suggested as much is "Little Shop of Horrors" (1986). Not only is it a delight itself, you'll surely be tickled by all of the recognizable faces that pop up throughout it.
Little Shop of Horrors also has so many great fun songs. Disney then hired the creators to do the songs for a movie called The Little Mermaid.

In an interview one of the movie creators said he always thought that Bill's character was stuck in the loop for hundreds of thousands of years.
A good movie with Bill Murray where he's a supporting character is Tootsie.
Rushmore is a wonderful one. I still consider the fact that he didn't get supporting actor nomination for that one to be proof the the academy are idiots.

The Screenwriter, Danny Rubin, introduced me to my girlfriend in college.-- So, for the record, since Danny is a Buddhist, in his mind, Phil is stuck at least thousand years; possibly up to 10,000 years! -- However, Harold Ramis, the director, says it's closer to 10 years. As that's how long it takes to learn to play the piano.
Phil also becomes a surgeon, an ice sculptor, etc. 10,000 years sounds more realistic.

Yeah, more like 100's of years I the commentary to the movie hits on this. The original screenplay, it is dark man, that is why he goes through that suicide period in the film.... He goes a bit crazy.

I felt the homeless guy scenes too. The thought of reliving the same day over and over again and he will still die is life changing for Phil. I am certain that in every future repeat day that he was kind and thoughtful to that man.
