Apparently, when this movie was in theaters, Weird Al would take dates to see it, and he’d wear the shirt he was wearing in the movie, and act surprised when he was onscreen.
I served Al at my last job, and he’s a genuinely sweet guy, and his family is wonderful.

Sounds a lot like Bob Crane, star of "Hogan's Heroes," as portrayed by Greg Kinnear in the movie "Auto Focus." Apparently, he'd go to bars, ask for the TV to be turned on, and act surprised when Hogan's Heroes came on.

Funny thing about his driving: this was based on the TV series "Police Squad." A running gag was that every episode he would knock over a bunch of trash cans proportional to the number of the episodes: one on the first episode, two on the second, etc.
They were very fortunate it only ran for one season, because it would have been difficult to keep it up.

They were eating pistachios (the ones still in the shell) in the car on the stakeout. Back then most pistachios were imported snd they dyed them red to hide the mottled appearance of the shells (from drying) and make them look more uniform and appealing. The dye would come off on your fingers and lips if you ate a lot of them, kind of like Cheetoh dust 🙂

The article said that before they were grown in California they came from so far away they would actually start to rot a little before they arrived. That’s another reason they dyed them. So you wouldn’t see the rot starting to set in. My father loved these movies when I was a kid, and also loves pistachios.

I like the $20 bill gag. It was a reworked gag from the tv show Police Squad. If anyone is unaware of the gag Frank on the TV show would visit a street shoe shiner called Johnny played by William Duell. Frank would ask him something he needed to know to solve the case. Johnny would reply "I wouldn't know anything about it" or something similar. The Frank would bribe him and he would tell him what he wanted to know. The gag is street shoe shiners would know everything because they listened and picked up things whilst on the streets. Doctors and firemen and sportsmen would come in after Frank and ask him a question. Also they had to bribe him, its so funny and I think better than the movie version. Shamw William Duell didn't reprise his role as shoe shiner guy. Shame the rest of the cast didn't reprise their roles, would loved to have seen Alan North he was great.

The people in the opening sequence are indeed meant to be "world leaders" from that era.
    These are:
    - the big black general guy: Idi Amin, dictator of Uganda, killed some hundred thousand people during his rule
    - the guy with the sunglasses and the arab headdress: Jassir Arafat. Leader of the PLO and their terror war against Israel.
    - the curly haired officer: Muammar al-Gaddafi. Dictator of Libya. Responsible for several acts of brutal terror all over the world, including the infamous destruction of a Boeing 747 in the air over the scottish town of Lockerbie in 1988... after this movie was released. He hadn't been a nice guy before.
    - bald guy with the "fake" birthmark: Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev, last leader of the Soviet Union. In contrast to his speech in this movie, he _was_ (still is) a "nice guy", whose reforms were mainly responsible for the end of the Cold War.
    - white bearded guy with black turban: Ayatollah Ruhollah Musavi Khomeini: leader of the Iranian Revolution and the following Islamic Republic of Iran. Definitly a friend of the USA, which he called "The Great Satan".
    - the guy without lines, in green fatigues and cap: Fidel Castro, long time ruler of Cuba.
Interestingly, Saddam Hussein doesn't feature on this tableau, as he was still considered a "good guy" and American ally in 1988. How things change.

It is called a "spitball" (no doubt owing to the origin of the practice when ballplayers often had a plug of chewing tobacco in) and was made illegal after the 1920 season for obvious reasons. Of course, making it illegal didn't make it impossible, but practitioners of the black art had to conceal the practice as much as possible, or risk ejection or even possible suspension. One of the most famous (notorious?) spitballers was Hall of Famer Gaylord Perry. Now that you've started these, you've really got to watch Top Secret!, which is the movie the Zucker/Abrahams/Zucker team made between Airplane! and The Naked Gun. You'll love who stars in it -- I won't tell you here, but it was his film debut! It's also Weird Al's favorite movie. (If I manage to get to the post office tomorrow, you might even get a copy of it in December...)
Although the movie uses the real teams, the only real player is Reggie Jackson, who plays the would-be assassin. The rest of the players are fake.
Also, you laughed at the credit for the soundtrack, but at this point I wonder if people remember the era where music videos (back when they were played on television) had those little chyrons at the beginning and end of the videos.

17:04 umpires have the prerogative to search a pitcher's uniform for tools/evidence of cheating via distorting the ball. The classic means of a pitcher doing this are emory boards/files/sandpaper/etc concealed in their pockets (hence searching the pitcher's pocket) and vaseline on their fingers. Obviously an entire jar of vaseline is too large to conceal in a pocket, so what pitchers would actually do is pre-smear a finger or two's worth of vaseline somewhere on their uniform where it was hard for someone else to see yet also easy for them to "innocently" touch to get the stuff back on their fingers (i.e. the brim of their hat). So, of course, to make a typical Naked Gun/Police Squad joke out of it, Nielsen actually does find the entire jar when he searches the pitcher.

A little history about Leslie Nielsen, his first role was in 1950 on Actors Studio. His first big role in movies was the standout sci-fi Forbidden Planet (highly recommend). It was ahead of it's time. He mostly did TV throughout his career, occasionally doing movies; mostly spoofs. TV shows he appeared in ranged from MASH to Fantasy Island. R.I.P. Leslie Nielsen, one of the greatest deadpan comedic actors.
It's no surprise that "Naked Gun" reminded you of "Airplane" because both movies were written and directed by the same team, known in Hollywood as the "Z.A.Z" team. Zucker, Abrams and Zucker.
"Naked Gun" was a spinoff of a short lived TV comedy starring Leslie Nielsen called " Police Squad", also created by Z.A.Z.
The "really skinny Tony Bennett" is the late actor Ricardo Montalban who is revered by sci-fi fans for his wicked acting in "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan," a "sequel" in number only because you can skip the sucky previous one and not lose anything. You should put "Star Trek II" on your list of must-see movies.

She has to at least do Spinal Tap. It's a rock'n'roll classic.

I'm a fan of Ricardo Montalban because of Fantasy Island way back in the day, and then as Khan in Star Trek, then as the grand dad in Spy Kids... Just an all around bad ass actor. I have NOT had this much fun watching this movie in so long. THANK you for reacting to it!

My dad took all of us to see this movie when it was new. I had no idea what to expect, but I had never laughed as hard as I did while watching this the first time (until "Hot Shots" 3 years later).

One of my all time favorite comedies!! My side hurts so bad when I watch this movie because of the endless laughs!! One of my favorite scenes is at the Queens Ball event when Frank and his partner check people that are walking in and Frank searched that poor guy only to reach in his partners pocket by mistake and goes.. "Hey!! He's got a picture of your wife!!" 🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂

So this started as a short lived six episode tv series also with Leslie Nielsen called Police Squad and then the film came out. Also this is one of those films where it requires multiple viewings to catch all of the visual gags.
Yes it is also supposed to be real enemies of America and the opening scene was referenced in Family Guy when Stewie attacked Osama Bin Laden.

When he left his mic on in the bathroom, it reminds me of a time I was working at a bookstore, and an older guy, who worked there, left his phone on to page overhead for the entire store. He went in the bathroom with it like that. Needless to say...one of the funniest moments I've ever been lucky enough to witness. The panic of management, the noises. The absolute hilarity! And also, PS - How in the hell have you never seen the Wizard of Oz?? Like how?? LOL! :)

So glad you watched this. This is one of my favourite movies growing up and why I'll always love Leslie Nielson. I've been waiting for this reaction since airplane.

As a Dane, I'm rather proud of the fact, that Leslie Nielsen was half-Danish, with a Danish-born father in Canada, who was a constable in the Canadian mounted police, so his character in The Naked Gun is rather apropos, in a roundabout way. It's been a while since I've watched all these The Naked Gun movies, but they're all hilarious.

Don't worry, it's never to soon to make OJ jokes! Every time I watch one of the scenes where his character is being shot, injured, maimed, etc., I say, "Good!" or "More, more!" Also, just FYI, Nancy Marchand, who played the Mayor, also played Tony Soprano's mother, so you may have recognized her from that. Great reactions today!!

@@JayM409 well, given she didn't recognize the world leaders at the start (which is fine at her age), I don't think she mistook the actress for Maggie Thatcher lol

I have had a rough couple of months and discovered you just a few days ago. I know it kind of silly but its like having a new friend to laugh with playing the movies I grew up in the 1980s with. Thank you Ashleigh for making a few days not so bad after all. Daryl

Naked Gun came out of an 80s tv show that Nielson was in called, Police Squad. It only ran one season, but it was incredibly good!
