Kathy Bates played a true person called Molly Brown who became the 'Unsinkable Molly Brown'. She was married to James Joseph Brown. They moved to a small town close to the gold mines, He was a miner who developed a method of reaching gold at the bottom of a mine and became part of the new wealthy. She became involved in women's clubs dedicated to improving conditions for women and children. She studied acting and became a suffragette. She was in Alva Vanderbilt's social circle in NY. (Ava Vanderbilt was THE socialite in NY...) She became fluent in several languages and used them to assist third class passengers on the sinking Titanic. She later headed the Survivors Committee. In 1932 she received the Legion of Honour for her efforts during and after the sinking if the Titanic.
You guys are so cute. The chemistry is undeniable. Definitely need Hubbin in more reactions. His love for this movie and the Titanic is adorable and him just as surprised as us at the lack of classic movies you’ve seen is hilarious. I’ll start the chant now. MORE HUBBIN!!! MORE HUBBIN!!! MORE HUBBIN!!! P. S. - I can’t be the only one that thinks Hubbin looks like a young Chris Bauer (look him up).
"The water/the ocean freaks me out" You really need to do THE ABYSS at some point! Also directed by James Cameron and guaranteed to give you a healthy respect/fear of the ocean.
The idea of being underwater also freaks me out. I could never even swim under the concrete dividers they put over pools to, well, divide them. I was always scared I’d get stuck and drown- even though the divider is like a metre wide. I’m also scared of falling into an icy lake, and then getting stuck under the ice and drowning. Probably not a rational fear given that I live in subtropical Australia, but it still freaks me out. As does the entire concept of submarines. Nope. Way too scary!
Yes! I've heard people call out the portrayal as "problematic" in retrospect, but it's always felt very authentic and nuanced to me. It's certainly a tricky thing to get right, and films frequently miss the mark, but he does a great job of bringing that character to life. I will always defend it as legitimately one of his greatest roles.
The old timey footage at the beginning of the movie with people on the deck of the Titanic waving was in fact shot for this movie however they used actual vintage hand crank cameras from the early part of the twentieth century to film those shots with.
Fun fact: that was actually a miniature of the wreck site. Also: Kate Winslet and Gloria Stewart made history, both being nominated for academy awards for playing the same character in the same movie.
There was a lot of miniature use for the wreck, but there was ACTUAL WRECK FOOTAGE included…if my memory from behind the scenes stuff is correct, the bow coming out of the gloom was actual wreck footage Simple rule of thumb, if BOTH submersibles are visible? Or if it’s an interior shot not seen from the robots view, then it’s miniature…
Some of it most are real shots of the ship Cameron said any shot with the subs was miniatures and shots of just the ship were real it was a mixture of real and miniature
April 15th, 1912 is when the ship sank. Of the estimated 2,224 passengers and crew, more than 1,500 died. Mainly because the lifeboats were not managed correctly and there were not enough of them on deck to make more deck space available.
Funny story: I was 7 when this movie came out and my parents actually took me to the theaters to see it. I was also a naive kid so I didn't actually know what sex was so in the scene where the hands comes up on the foggy window I said out loud, "Wow they have a shower in the back of their car!" My older teenage brothers tried to tell me what was going on but my dad was like, "shut up and let him think it's a shower."
8:21 Blake: “you think she would be weird about going back on the water” I have lived in Florida, Louisiana, Texas, Arizona, and Colorado, I’m 39 married with no kids. If you get nipped by a shark or lose, a limb, by a shark, you still go back to the beach/water/surfing/whatever😊😊😊😊 When I was six, I jumped off of a three-story tuna tower as all of us kids did on my stepdad‘s boat, and I landed on a Portuguese Manowar, I didn’t come back up, and one of the grownups had to jump in to save me because I had become paralyzed. By the time I got back in the boat and they told me to pee on my own legs, and they put vinegar and aloe on me, a Capri Sun juice box and 30 minutes later, I was jumping off of the tuna tower again with the rest of the kids. Born and raised in the south, the Gulf of Mexico was a way of life growing up in Destin Florida when it was a tiny fishing village in the 80s and 90s. ❤❤❤❤ loving this
I still remember the VHS cut. It was after the line “I believe you may get your headlines, Mr. Ismay.” Then the second one starts with Cal slapping Rose.
@@tristramcoffin926 I remember there being a big thing at the time about dudes pretending they didn’t like Titanic, that they were only watching it because their girlfriend made them… but they secretly loved it. I think Cameron did a fantastic job at blending the romantic elements of the story with the action/spectacle elements. It’s a really hard line to walk, but he did it perfectly.
Love how you sprinkled in some Titanic trivia during your reaction. And of course great to see hubbin make a guest appearance. Great reaction as always!
FUN FACT! When he's going to draw her and he says, "Over on the bed...the couch." That was actually a slip on DeCaprio's part. It was supposed to be "the couch" but he was nervous and said bed. But the gaffe was so good they kept it.
22:15 The party down in steerage is very necessary. The whole theme of the movie is about the differences caused by the class system, but at the fancy first class dinner, Jack showed Rose that he's ok in her world. Later, at the party in steerage, Rose showed Jack that she's just as comfortable in his world.
It's also vital in developing the relationship between the main characters. Every love story needs to show the characters at the height of having fun together.
The story of Jack winning his ticket seems far-fetched, except my own great-aunt gave her ticket to a man whose family was in NYC and his wife was fixing to have a baby. Talk about a crazy thing, huh? Aunt Aggie always regretted giving him the ticket, because he died.
The scenes in steerage were important because Cameron wanted to show various social groups, not just the upper class. And to show how Rose was breaking away from the limitations and expectations placed on her.
I actually remember when the first VHS cassette ends. Where Andrews, Ismay, and the Captain are looking at the floor plans of the ship and determining that it will sink within 2 hours. The captain then says to Ismay along the lines of “I guess you’ll get your headlines Mr. Ismay” before smashing to black.
I really like Wall-E, but my best memory of it is not the movie. When it came out, I was an intern at JPL, the NASA site that developed the robotic probes and rovers. Pixar invited some of the robotics folks to a pre-screening of the film, and to hear the joy in the voice of a senior engineer describing the film and how right they got some things is still one if my favorite memories about Wall-E. The scene he was referring to was when one of Wall-E's cameras breaks and he replaces it. Totally geeked out about how, yes that is how a robot would likely behave if it lost depth perception and how the calibration and aligning procedure that is gone though would be needed and the inclusion of this level of detail brought him more into the movie.
Just wanted to say I absolutely loved seeing you both for this review. Your husbands sense of humor and seeing the two of you interact with laughs and jokes during this movie viewing had me in stitches! The remark about Wisconsin... "they also have cheese..." or "Yeah, it's called church." were just a few that had me rolling. Can't wait till Monday to see the last half!
I started researching Titanic in 1983- I was in high school when it was discovered. When this movie came out I saw it 2x in the theater! I cried like a baby both times because there were so many interesting details shown that were in my research. I have been to both Titanic exhibitions and was moved to tears at both of them. There are so many stories about the people that were there and died and survived. So glad you finally watched it with your hubby!
The scene where Captain Smith is talking to Bruce Ismay we know the conversation took place bc of a passenger overhearing it. If you see in the movie you can see the extra look over at them. That is the passenger where they get the account from. James Cameron's attention to detail is awesome.
Yes, there was an Irish priest, who got off in the last stop before heading to New York - Cobh in Cork (Ireland), he was an avid photographer & Cameron recreated some of those scenes in the background on the decks.
I love when Hubben is on camera; he's so opposite of Ashleigh, but they have great chemistry, and are funny in different ways! High + low energies = great balance. I know Ash would never see it, but she and Kate Winslet look kind of alike!! When Ash says how beautiful Kate is, and her husband agrees, he's looking at ASH!! Did he marry his "Kate"? I bet he did!!!
What I love about this movie is that it shows how these people were so set on getting treasures from the sunken ship that they never stopped to think about what the people on the boat went through during that time.
Per James Cameron: In the beginning of the film, if you see a submarine on camera, it is a model. The footage of the ship with no submarine in frame is actual footage.
Not quite accurate - they took two subs down to the crash site for real, and one filmed the other. Therefore, if you see a single submarine on camera, it's probably a genuine one, filmed by the second sub at the crash site. If you see two subs in the shot, it's a visual effects shot.
@@Daveyboy100880 Yes. My understanding is that James Cameron holds the patent on the cameras that are able to record at such depths. He's also responsible for the cameras used in Avatar, that rendered the VFX on monitors in real time.
Interesting fact, Titanic was the second ship of her class, the Olympic class. Even more interesting is the the story of Violet Jessop a nurse who won the nickname of Queen of Sinking Ships. She was aboard Olympic when it collided with a British warship in 1911, she then was aboard Titanic and survived the sinking, and if that still was not enough she survived the sinking of Britannic when she struck a mine in 1916.
Following a television interview many years after the sinking, she received a late night phone call from someone who claimed Violet had saved them as a baby on Titanic! The person thanked her profusely & promptly hung up…
I must say, Ashleigh, you have become my favorite reactor here on TH-cam. I must also say that I am thoroughly enjoying the collab with Hubbins. Keep up the great content!
True Story : My cousin and I where standing in line to go in to watch Titanic, and we where talking about the movie and my cousin, in a louder voice, says "And I heard the boat sinks in the end!" Two girls in front of us turned around and got very upset that we ruined the ending! LOL! Yes, some people had no clue on what happened in real life!
Even if you didn't know, they tell you within the first 5 minutes that the ship sinks. The movie starts in modern times with an expedition exploring the wreckage at the bottom of the ocean.
So get this... my grandmother passed on April 7th, her favorite movie was "Titanic." It was the last movie we watched together. Her husband, my grandfather, was born on April 14th.
When shooting an intimate scene which involves nudity, they close off the set to everyone not essential to filming the scene. It's only the actors, the cameraman, the sound man, the dolly grip and the director. Now days they often have an intimacy coordinator to make sure these protocols are obeyed and no one feels unduly awkward.
It's also done in such a "technical & matter of fact" manner that it can lessen the awkwardness of the nudity. It's quite clinical & there's no semblance of sexiness or intimacy, it's just work.
@@thecrummycook6955 Yep. It's not always easy being an actor. Think of all those quiet sensitive moments in movies that don't involve sex where the actor is expected to emote for the camera in front of dozens of grizzled, veteran technicians.
Hubbin is intently watching the first part of the film reliving a fond childhood memory and Ashleigh is sitting there with that, "When's something gonna happen?" face. 🤣
I get hubbin’s Titanic love. I went through a similar phase when the movie came out. It just seemed to symbolise the hope that brought people across the sea to America. That hope and romanticism outlived the ship.
Kathy Bates plays Molly Brown. She was "Nouveau Riche", or "New Money". Generally looked down upon by "Old Money". They were not considered "Genteel". Margaret (Molly) Brown's husband James Joseph (J.J.) made his fortune mining gold and copper in Colorado. After the disaster, she was labeled "The Unsinkable Molly Brown". A Broadway show and a movie were made about her.
"How do people do these types of scenes" After Kate Winslet found out that scene was going to happen, when she first met Leo, she flashed him to break the ice and get it out of the way.
So much fun, humorous energy from the girl...reserved, studious energy from the guy. Opposites attract perhaps? Anyway, I recognize she talked a whole lot during the movie (my favorite movie of all time, popularity be damned) but she seems like a fun person.
When Leo flubs his words and says "the bed" instead of "the couch", that was a genuinely unscripted moment. James Cameron does indeed draw Kate Winslet, but the image had to be mirrored, because Cameron is left-handed, and Leo is right-handed.
Also Cameron admitted to getting the sinking wrong but didn’t change anything in the movie which I appreciate. Also he said because of this movie with Jack and Rose at the bow that ships don’t allow people to go to the bow for that reason. Very interesting things
@@ryans413 Plus, Cameron didn’t come up with the more modern lower-break angle theory until long after the movie (I believe it was around 2012). And I don’t know how commonly known the port list was in 1997
A book about the Titanic, "A Night to Remember" has a preface that tells the true story of a fictional story written 50+? years beforehand. That fictional story was about an unsinkable ship named the Titan, that struck an iceberg and sank on its maiden voyage. Many other details from the story lined up. Very worth reading...goosebumps stuff. The professor demanded we read the preface, and we all were speechless.
@tconlon251 I LOVED THAT SHOW.... used to watch it with my mom and we made it into a game of who ever got the most right won an ice cream or some sort of sweet treat.... it was fun
There's a conspiracy theory that links the Rothschilds, the sinking of the Titanic, and the creation of the Federal Reserve. Benjamin Guggenheim, Isa Strauss (actual name Isidor Straus), and David Astor were three wealthy men who died on the Titanic. The three opposed the new Federal Reserve Bank." The Titanic's sinking happened in 1912, and the opening of the Federal Reserve happened in 1913. Was their opposition to the Fed and their deaths were somehow linked? A TH-cam video offers some additional "information," hinting that the sinking of the Titanic was effectively drawn up as a re-creation of a late-19th-century book called "Futility, or the Wreck of the Titan." The book was published 14 years before the Titanic sank and a decade before any construction began.
As a Titanic Addict...pizza and a Titanic doc is perfection! The big ship is fascinating, haunting, and heartbreaking. A microcosm of everything good and bad about the Edwardian era...and ultra romantic. You and Hubbin are a dynamic duo! Thank you Ashleigh and Hubbin...a wonderful reaction!
Gloria Stuart (Old Rose) was 86 or 87 when she shot this role. She actually lived to be 100. Way back, she was in a couple of Shirley Temple movies, and in the original The Invisible Man.
They found the Titanic almost by accident. I think they were really looking for a sunk nuclear russian sub and used the Titanic as a cover story, but when they finished the mission ahead of schedule, they went to give a try to see if it was where they thought, so they went down and there she was.
As others have said, the movie “The Unsinkable Molly Brown” starring Debbie Reynolds is a movie (loosely) following the life of Molly Brown. It is based on a stage musical and a somewhat fictionalized account of the life of Margaret Brown. The unsinkable Molly Brown was a nickname bestowed upon her following crossing on the Titanic. It would be a good movie to react to if you ever do a series on movie musicals.
@@theman4884 also survived the earlier collision of their sister ship, Olympic, with a smaller boat called the Storstad, in 1911. Luck was really on Violet Jessop's side.
Jack's line asking Rose to lay on the bed er couch was actually a blooper that was left in intentionally. It added a little levity to the scene, and it was nice to see Jack get flustered.
it is an interesting fact about Gloria Stewart, one of her earliest movies was made in 1934 and was called "Here comes the Navy" in which she co-starred with James Cagney. Much of the movie was filmed on a US Navy battleship...the USS Arizona, which was, in 1941, the scene of the worst loss of life on a single US warship in history, when 1177 men lost their lives when the ship was sunk during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour. Just over 60 years later, Gloria Stewart's last movie featured her in a story set around one of the worst maritime disasters is history, the sinking of the Titanic, in which 1512 people, passengers and crew lost their lives........a somewhat macabre coincidence, I reckon...............
Another coincidence is that she played a 100-year old Rose in the movie (while she was 86 going on 87 in real life). She ended up living until 2010, after turning 100 herself.
Reminds me of the movie “Dive Bomber”, which was filmed aboard the USS Enterprise… in early 1941. Just under a year later, Enterprise would begin its journey to becoming one of the most badass warships to ever sail.
After all these years I've only just noticed the "Drawing of Rose" is the same story telling device as the "Polaroid of Sarah Connor" that James Cameron used in The Terminator. We see an old picture of somebody in the future then travel back in time to find out where that picture came from.
@The Stomp Thanks for that addition. Makes total and complete sense for Cameron to have done it. You know, if this ingredient was successful in Terminator, why not use it in Titanic? It also means, Jack didn't had to necessarily die. ;)
Ashleigh if you ever wanna blow hubbin's mind take him on a trip to Ireland and visit the Titanic museum in Belfast (where the Titanic was built). I've been there shortly after it opened in 2012 and it was simply amazing, and I'm not nearly the Titanic fanatic that your hubbin is.
The SeaCity museum in Southampton also has a fairly large Titanic exhibition, the museum was also opened on the 100th anniversary of the ship departing the city in 2012.
If you guys ever get a chance to go to Belfast, Northern Ireland, I HIGHLY recommend the Titanic museum there (at the shipyard where it was built). A whole other perspective on it, and a really cool museum
It's called the EOT (Engine Order Telegraph). The Officer Of The Deck (OOD) orders the Lee Helmsman to set the EOT for an ordered speed and revolutions. The Main Engine Room acknowledges the order by duplicating the order on the EOT. I am Retired Navy and former undesignated seaman in Deck Department. I've stood Forward and Aft Lookout many times on my first ship in all conditions....It is a thankless duty....
In real life, King Théoden, I mean Captain Smith, actually had the Titanic travel on a more southerly course to avoid icebergs--farther south than any iceberg had ever been spotted in history at the time. Unfortunately, that night was the once in a century or so occurrence of icebergs ending up that far south. Oops.

My mom once told me that while she was in line waiting to get a ticket to see it in theaters, she was chatting with her friend about it, along the lines of, "It's a shame it sank..." kinda way, and someone in line behind her said, "Oh! Thanks, Miss Spoiler!"
And I'm like, Seriously? I learned about this in school, didn't they teach you about this?
Same thing happened to us. Movies like this are wasted on people like that. Oxygen is wasted on people like that.

Can we all agree that Blake's dry sense of humor is a perfect compliment to Ashleigh?

"The water/the ocean freaks me out"
You really need to do THE ABYSS at some point! Also directed by James Cameron and guaranteed to give you a healthy respect/fear of the ocean.
It’s not a good movie
I really like that movie. It does show its age, though. And I think it's probably a movie you either like or don't.
Preferably the director’s cut..,…
Seconded. It's one of my favorite movies, but it should be the directors cut.
I'm with everyone else on this: "It's a movie. They can't just kiss and sink the boat." Tears... literal tears from the laughter.

Old Rose was played by Gloria Stuart. She also played Flora in the original 1933 film ‘The Invisible Man’ starring Claude Rains.
If you love Leonardo, you have to see “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape”. Probably his greatest role and shows his acting ability!
Kirk Lazarus approves.
I liked him in Basketball Diaries
and Romeo + Juliet
Yes. He was nominated for an Oscar for that performance, but didn't get it.
Ashleigh: I wonder where the wreckage is located today?
Hubbin: North Atlantic ocean... 41.726931° N and 49.948253° W
There was a lot of miniature use for the wreck, but there was ACTUAL WRECK FOOTAGE included…if my memory from behind the scenes stuff is correct, the bow coming out of the gloom was actual wreck footage
Simple rule of thumb, if BOTH submersibles are visible? Or if it’s an interior shot not seen from the robots view, then it’s miniature…
Some of it most are real shots of the ship Cameron said any shot with the subs was miniatures and shots of just the ship were real it was a mixture of real and miniature
April 15th, 1912 is when the ship sank. Of the estimated 2,224 passengers and crew, more than 1,500 died. Mainly because the lifeboats were not managed correctly and there were not enough of them on deck to make more deck space available.
What's fun about that?
He said, one sub is real, 2 subs is a miniature
Funny story:
I was 7 when this movie came out and my parents actually took me to the theaters to see it. I was also a naive kid so I didn't actually know what sex was so in the scene where the hands comes up on the foggy window I said out loud, "Wow they have a shower in the back of their car!"
My older teenage brothers tried to tell me what was going on but my dad was like, "shut up and let him think it's a shower."
Me too seen it a billion times

I still remember the VHS cut. It was after the line “I believe you may get your headlines, Mr. Ismay.” Then the second one starts with Cal slapping Rose.
Correct. I never owned on VHS but my girlfriend did and she made me watch it over and over. I say 'made me' but I didn't mind.
I thought the vhs cut off right after they were dancing in 3rd class. Right before Cal reprimanded her in the morning after.
I read that as "Sal clapping Rose" and I'm still laughing 😂 my brain instantly went "who dafuq is Sal" 😂😂
Likewise w/ the 3D Blu-Ray version, the exception being the format availability as double-discs.

The cut on the VHS tape was after the captain told Ismay, "You may get your headlines, Mr. Ismay".
Yes this comment exactly
The story of Jack winning his ticket seems far-fetched, except my own great-aunt gave her ticket to a man whose family was in NYC and his wife was fixing to have a baby. Talk about a crazy thing, huh? Aunt Aggie always regretted giving him the ticket, because he died.
Oh wow... how that must weigh on you to always think about that? You lived, but at the cost of someone else's life. Crazy!
Well...that Harshed my Mellow...
Did she regret that he died, or that she lived
It was a traumatic event in history, for a lot of people
Jesus 0.0
The scenes in steerage were important because Cameron wanted to show various social groups, not just the upper class. And to show how Rose was breaking away from the limitations and expectations placed on her.
I love how delighted Ashleigh always is when she correctly predicts the next line of dialogue in a movie.
Did you hear that ring?
Cuz she called it! 😂
Yours and Blake's sense of humour work so freakin well together. More Hubben collaborations!
I actually remember when the first VHS cassette ends. Where Andrews, Ismay, and the Captain are looking at the floor plans of the ship and determining that it will sink within 2 hours. The captain then says to Ismay along the lines of “I guess you’ll get your headlines Mr. Ismay” before smashing to black.
chillllllssss 😭 man those were the good ol' days, the 90s
"I never thought a robot could be cute"... well, I've got 3 titles for you: Short Circuit, Wall-E, Batteries Not Included.
Yes yes yes yes yes!!! To all three!!!
Artoo????
Yes! I’ve been thinking of suggesting Batteries not included! Loved that movie 😁
Great suggestions!!
It right when the Captain says you may get your headlines MR Ismay lol sorry I’ve seen this film a billion times so I know
Yes and there being a short intermission during the movie in the theatres
Blake's sense of humor is the best! He's had me laughing every time he's been on.
Rose's mother lacing up her corsets good and *tight* is pretty symbolic of their relationship and Rose's predicament.
What I love about this movie is that it shows how these people were so set on getting treasures from the sunken ship that they never stopped to think about what the people on the boat went through during that time.

Titanic Hits iceberg and sinks
Cal: Surprised Pikachu face.
Poor girl just has the worst luck.

Two girls in front of us turned around and got very upset that we ruined the ending! LOL! Yes, some people had no clue on what happened in real life!
Even if you didn't know, they tell you within the first 5 minutes that the ship sinks. The movie starts in modern times with an expedition exploring the wreckage at the bottom of the ocean.
Remember a few years ago, when a bunch of people on twitter were shocked to find out the Titanic was a real event, and not just a movie?
It's quite clinical & there's no semblance of sexiness or intimacy, it's just work.
and sometimes it's not even the actors, sometimes body doubles are used
I wonder how one gets an "intimacy coordinator" gig 😂 That's fantastic!
Only four guys watching you, OK then…
@@thecrummycook6955 Yep.
"How do people do these types of scenes"
After Kate Winslet found out that scene was going to happen, when she first met Leo, she flashed him to break the ice and get it out of the way.
It was their first scene together in the filming.
@@ryans413 It's not that wrong though, it's pretty close.

@tconlon251 I LOVED THAT SHOW.... used to watch it with my mom and we made it into a game of who ever got the most right won an ice cream or some sort of sweet treat.... it was fun
The movie A Night to Remember is also worth a watch, some of the scenes in this movie are 1:1 copies from it.
_The Wreck of the Titan or Futility_,
written by Morgan Robertson in 1898.

Violet Jessop is an even more interesting story and deserves a movie. She survived the sink of the Titanic and the Britannic.
This is one of my favorite musical adaptations of all time. Reynolds is brilliant in this.
she actually didn't go by Molly Brown historically she went by Maggie Brown

Yep people kinda lost interest it’s been so long over 10 years since the last hell I even forgot about it until I’ve read the comments
It also means, Jack didn't had to necessarily die. ;)
Titanic is a retelling of the first terminator film when you think about it

I've been there shortly after it opened in 2012 and it was simply amazing, and I'm not nearly the Titanic fanatic that your hubbin is.
The SeaCity museum in Southampton also has a fairly large Titanic exhibition, the museum was also opened on the 100th anniversary of the ship departing the city in 2012.

I've literally just moved to Belfast last week and I second this recommendation.
Oops.

And important character development.
