It's wonderful hearing Steve tell his story. I've been telling it for years. I met Steve at the Country Club in the San Fernando Valley where he was selling and promoting his tapping book at a guitar show. He had just been highlighted in Guitar Player and I recognized him. We stated talking and it turned out he no car and no way to get home, so I gave him a ride to his apartment in North Hollywood. Steve is a real down to earth regular guy. We ended up becoming friends and I started taking lessons from him. I still have the notebook and tape he made for me. One day he calls me up and invites me to his rehearsal hall to raise money for gas to go on tour with Van Halen and gave me the whole story how that came about. It was amazing! I talked to him from the road, I think it was a day or two after his birthday and he told me how surreal it was. Well, from the interview you can see how crazy it got for the band and we lost touch, but years later I ran into him at NAMM and caught up. I talked to him on the phone a few years ago and was great catching up again. Steve is an amazing guitarist and great guy.
"Turn Up The Radio" still gets me going and introduced me to what a magnificent thing a guitar in skilled hands can be. Another great interview with another rock legend, Mr. Lynch is still super cool
I had the pleasure of attending GIT when Steve was there and remember he rented a room at the school and would be practicing and playing until 2 in the morning. He was truly amazing and the buzz was he was going to get a gig playing with Greg Lake. I don't know if I am having a fake memory or not but I believe he came down and jammed with me and a few friends in one of the rehersal rooms. It was like a god coming down from Mount Olympus. One of my favorite memories from the school. While I faded away into obscurity, knowing that I went to school with him and Jennifer Batten and was taught by Don Mock and Joe Diorio and meeting all different types of guitarists from all over the world is one of the biggest highlights of my life. Awesome!! I went to GIT in '88-'89, and Steve gave a couple of clinics in P100. Man, it was great stuff, and he stuck around and talked with all of us afterwards. Such a great memory for me. About 10 years ago, Steve and I exchanged emails re-living those days. I expressed to him just how much I appreciated his completely normal and down-to-earth attitude back then. It made such a good impression on me, and I'll never forget it.

The man is an educator among all else. His book was set in motion - not in 1985 when everyone and their uncle put out some kind of instruction - but in 1979. On two-handed technique. That's incredible. Guys like Steve and Rhoads (true music educators) are a rare bird. Damn good video. Steve I saw you around Feb 14 1984 Charlotte NC with the Mighty VH. Great show and we played your album all that following Summer. Great times. You're part of my soundtrack.
I saw/ met Steve Lynch here in Oberhausen/ Germany in 1990, when he did a guitar clinic in my go to guitar shop. To us Thrash Metal kids he was VERY Hollywood and his playing was crazy awesome. He was also supernice and cool, promoting Crate amps and I actually bought one of those because of him. 😁

Very cool, thanks as always Jason. I didn't know Steve was a Warshingtonian. Hearing him talk about the Pacific NW was amazing. He is a wee bit older than me but still neat to hear of another musician from the ole stomping grounds. I did get to see them on that Motley tour. They were great as was band 2, Y&T. I was 17 and having Phil Kennemore (RIP) hand me his bass pick is great memory and I still have the pick to this day.
I saw Autograph at Shank Hall in Milwaukee a couple of years ago. It was a shame that there were only 8 people there. I have to hand it to them. They put on a fantastic show for such a disappointing turn out. I would definitely go see them again. Steve was amazing!
We opened for them when “Turn Up the Radio” hit. We were their t-shirt band! He was the sweetest guy in the world, talked with the fans, signed everything and stood for a thousand photos. The drummer was so hammered he couldn’t stand unassisted (such a dick) and they rocked! Ah, the good old days!
Enjoy watching you interviews. You do a great job of keeping things moving and staying out of the way at the same time. If I could make one suggestion...your voice is always much louder than who you are interviewing. So either you are booming or they are barely audible (makes it hard to listen to at work!).
Really enjoyed this interview with "STEVE Lynch"! I have seen and heard many s snippets and clips of this guy and I was blown away! So underrated as a guitar "pioneer" which many people and musicians do not know. Steve can play everything from Melodic Rock, to Country to Pop. His guitar playing is so unique....man I appreciate this guy. He has many true stories and if you want to learn something, listen closely! Steve is a "Straight Shooter" and a great songwriter!

With respect to Steve I think he's a little bit delusional about something here. Guns n roses was not kind of a 70s band that got around the changes to emerge strong with the promotion in the 90s. The fact is, GNR was raw and gritty and very good at it and part of the clearing away of the glam for edgy rock without affectations again. We took them in stride with all the amazing new music coming from Seattle and said were able to surf that wave

Hi Jason. GREAT Podcasts, man! Love all the guests and discussions. It sounds like you're getting a lot of "background noise cancelation" happening with Zoom audio, which is switched on by default. I don't think you can shut this off, but there is a way around it. You can bypass noise cancelation on all streaming platforms by using an external mic (condenser USB or XLR) with an A/D converter of some sort. It might be worth investing in a condenser mic and Focusrite A/D converter. Sure SM7B-$399 Focusrite Scarlett Solo 3rd Gen USB Audio Interface-$119.I know you are a musician and you know all this stuff. Didn't see a mic on arm or table stand, so thought I'd mention. The world is a small place. What are the chances of seeing this legend sitting across from me in my local bar a week ago in Jersey with a hot blond enjoying some wine and food. Better yet after an hour and pumping in some of his hits from the 80's he comes over and shoots the shit with me for a few minutes talking about the good ole 80's decade. Down to earth like you see here and great guy to have met. Guess I have a lot of catching up to do on his recent projects and books. Autograph was my first concert. Fort Smith Arkansas state fair. Not sure of the year. 83-85 cuz my grandfather took me so I wasn't driving yet. They were there with a couple other bands, not VH. Don't remember other bands at all. Autograph blew me away. I can still see the beer flying off the drums to this day. Thanks Steve Lynch for interview
IF it was during that 1st tour you might have seen them with KING KOBRA. That's who they came through my city with on their 1st tour in early 1985 when SIGN IN PLEASE was on the charts.

Always loved Steve’s playing in the band especially turn up the radio and I really think it’s refreshing to see a guy that’s totally cool with someone else taking his place. I think it’s great that he doesn’t rest on his laurels of the past and went for something a bit more sustainable.

20:16 Very interesting Eddie Van Halen got Allan Holdsworth his record deal. Alan stayed at Eddie’s house for about a week. In fact Eddie Van Halen said Alan Holdsworth is the last guitarist that he listened to that turned him on musically.
Saw Autograph in Texas on the Loud and Clear tour back in the day. Got a pick from Steve. Their show sounded awesome and Steves solo was awesome. Still one of my favorite bands of the 80's.
I was there at long beach arena when they filmed autograph! Lots of retakes. I think it was the recording song rather than the actual live song. About 12 takes it seemed. Awesome experience!
had to laugh when he said Mary Had a Little Lamb and my thoughts were The Mel bay book then you said it! I think Ernie Ball's book was Jingle Bells. hahahaa I started learning in around 1981 or so.

I saw the 1984 Van Halen tour January 26th on Eddie's Birthday. Steve, this must have been a week after your birthday that you mentioned. This was my first concert... I was just a kid. I remember when you guys came out and how the crowd got a little hostile. I think for a town starved for musical heroes, Van Halen was priority 1 2 and 3 that night. I think anyone that would have opened would have received the same unfriendly reception. So hopefully if you're looking back on any of those hostile shows know it was a different time Van Halen was at a different level and people's mindsets were a little bit different. I seem to remember you guys were just fine. God bless!
I met him in Roanoke Virginia backstage when they opened for Crüe. My hair was all 80's cut and sticking up, Steve thought I was in a band, and walked up to me first and said "Hi!" I looked at him, then said Holy Shit! Your Steve!! He said yes I am, how ya doing?, blah blah. Anyway, he, and the drummer were cool as helm The bass player was a dick though. Steve is a cool guy, still is it seems 👍
Incredible player and Autograph were such an underrated band! The hooks and choruses they had were off the hook! Would have loved to see them back in the day.
Literally the most underrated never mentioned Guitarist of the 80's. Steve's playing was full of Melodic riffs that just flowed!! Steve is one of my favorite guitarists. I mean in the earlier 80's, of course there was Randy and EVH but I have always been really into like the under dogs or the bands that never got all the recognition etc but were great etc. Steve was always one my guitar heroes. So under rated

Cool cat! His album Network23 is amazing¡!! 1st listen did not quite got it but after 2-3 listens it grabs you. This guy would have been PERFECT for Robert Plant's solo albums such as manic nirvana, fate of nations... great player and very cool cat.
I saw the 1984 VH tour and Steve's guitar didn't work for the entire set. I remember thinking, "He's got to be so pissed." Capital Centre, Landover Maryland. I'll bet he remembers that!
I was not into Autorgraph in the day, they were just a little too pop and generic for me although I did like the two singles from the 1st album. I never realized Steve Lynch was an early pioneer in the guitar tapping thing. For a band I didn't listen to I am enjoying this interview.
@@WasteSomeTimewithJasonGreen around the 38 minute mark he's talking about not being able to get signed again after the RCA deal ended. That deal ended in 1988. His timing is way off. He's talking about the grunge scene. Nonsense. They couldn't get a new deal because let's face it, the only hit album they had was the 1st one. Albums 2 and 3 don't even go gold. There is no radio hit on albums 2 and 3. They just flat out got rejected, that is what happened to Autograph. I think you describe it better as they got lost in limbo. I also recall, around 1989, the drummer in Autograph resurfaced in some major label band, I think it was called Dirty White Boy, so that guy at least did get signed with a new band.
Where did the Autograph song "When I'm Gone" come from? It sounds like a song that was likely left off the first three RCA albums. Was it previously on a soundtrack? It definitely sounds like it came from the 1980's rather than 1997 - when Steve Plunkett drifted away from hard rock/AOR and did folky soft rock with the "7th Heaven" theme and stuff like that.
Steve is a nice enough guy, and even though it appears he developed a tapping technique independent of Eddie, he wasn't able to create a sound and the songs using the technique that Eddie did. After this interview, I went and listened to the first Autograph album, and apart from Turn Up The Radio and Send Her To Me (and a pretty cool riff in one of the later songs), the album sucks and it's easy to see why they didn't get more recognition. Writing a book on tappan and putting it in songs apart from Eddie doesn't mean a whole lot, if you can't write quality songs with that technique.
Steve's a great guitar player. Even though a LOT of people tapped, his style was quite unique and expressive. I always loved Autograph, and they hit right as I was starting to play guitar. So there was a lot to learn from Steve. The problem I had was that they were all over MTV and the radio, but it was difficult to actually find an album at the time. I don't really think that they got the backing from RCA that they should have.
Steve Lynch is a super amazing guitarist. His solo in turn up the radio is one of my all time favorites.
Steve never gets mentioned with the great guitar players of the 80s but man he’s definitely up there with the best of the genre imo.

I saw Steve Lynch on his clinic tour he did in Germany... end of the 80s/beginning 90s? That was impressive. Plus, I still got the tabs.
Correction, Ed didn’t just used one finger . In the 84 tour he used two fingers and built a table Top for his Kramer to play it like a piano.

You could also use a Lavalier Mic with A/D converter. It's the converter that bypasses the Zoom, Teams, Skype audio Noise Cancellation. All the best.

Late to the party on this interview...but I really enjoyed it! While I have the first three Autograph albums and have always enjoyed them I never really knew their history. Very cool to learn more about them for sure! 🤘🎸🎧
The world is a small place. What are the chances of seeing this legend sitting across from me in my local bar a week ago in Jersey with a hot blond enjoying some wine and food. Better yet after an hour and pumping in some of his hits from the 80's he comes over and shoots the shit with me for a few minutes talking about the good ole 80's decade. Down to earth like you see here and great guy to have met. Guess I have a lot of catching up to do on his recent projects and books. Autograph was my first concert. Fort Smith Arkansas state fair. Not sure of the year. 83-85 cuz my grandfather took me so I wasn't driving yet. They were there with a couple other bands, not VH. Don't remember other bands at all. Autograph blew me away. I can still see the beer flying off the drums to this day. Thanks Steve Lynch for interview
IF it was during that 1st tour you might have seen them with KING KOBRA. That's who they came through my city with on their 1st tour in early 1985 when SIGN IN PLEASE was on the charts.

@@allenmudman9755 it was a state fair you say? That might have been some one odd ball gig they took and not part of their touring package. I guess you could Google Arkansas State Fair and see if they have a history of live acts posted .
Always loved Steve’s playing in the band especially turn up the radio and I really think it’s refreshing to see a guy that’s totally cool with someone else taking his place. I think it’s great that he doesn’t rest on his laurels of the past and went for something a bit more sustainable.

In fact Eddie Van Halen said Alan Holdsworth is the last guitarist that he listened to that turned him on musically.

Saw Autograph in Texas on the Loud and Clear tour back in the day. Got a pick from Steve. Their show sounded awesome and Steves solo was awesome. Still one of my favorite bands of the 80's.
I was there at long beach arena when they filmed autograph! Lots of retakes. I think it was the recording song rather than the actual live song. About 12 takes it seemed. Awesome experience!

had to laugh when he said Mary Had a Little Lamb and my thoughts were The Mel bay book then you said it! I think Ernie Ball's book was Jingle Bells. hahahaa I started learning in around 1981 or so.
Steve is correct about RCA-they didn't know how to market or promote Triumph either. This was one of the reasons why Triumph sued to leave the label.
RCA was the worst for metal then.

I saw the 1984 Van Halen tour January 26th on Eddie's Birthday. Steve, this must have been a week after your birthday that you mentioned. This was my first concert... I was just a kid. I remember when you guys came out and how the crowd got a little hostile. I think for a town starved for musical heroes, Van Halen was priority 1 2 and 3 that night. I think anyone that would have opened would have received the same unfriendly reception. So hopefully if you're looking back on any of those hostile shows know it was a different time Van Halen was at a different level and people's mindsets were a little bit different. I seem to remember you guys were just fine. God bless!

I met him in Roanoke Virginia backstage when they opened for Crüe. My hair was all 80's cut and sticking up, Steve thought I was in a band, and walked up to me first and said "Hi!"
I looked at him, then said Holy Shit! Your Steve!! He said yes I am, how ya doing?, blah blah. Anyway, he, and the drummer were cool as helm The bass player was a dick though.

Literally the most underrated never mentioned Guitarist of the 80's. Steve's playing was full of Melodic riffs that just flowed!! Steve is one of my favorite guitarists. I mean in the earlier 80's, of course there was Randy and EVH but I have always been really into like the under dogs or the bands that never got all the recognition etc but were great etc. Steve was always one my guitar heroes. So under rated

Cool cat! His album Network23 is amazing¡!! 1st listen did not quite got it but after 2-3 listens it grabs you. This guy would have been PERFECT for Robert Plant's solo albums such as manic nirvana, fate of nations... great player and very cool cat.
I saw the 1984 VH tour and Steve's guitar didn't work for the entire set. I remember thinking, "He's got to be so pissed." Capital Centre, Landover Maryland. I'll bet he remembers that!

I was not into Autorgraph in the day, they were just a little too pop and generic for me although I did like the two singles from the 1st album. I never realized Steve Lynch was an early pioneer in the guitar tapping thing. For a band I didn't listen to I am enjoying this interview.

@@WasteSomeTimewithJasonGreen around the 38 minute mark he's talking about not being able to get signed again after the RCA deal ended. That deal ended in 1988. His timing is way off. He's talking about the grunge scene. Nonsense. They couldn't get a new deal because let's face it, the only hit album they had was the 1st one. Albums 2 and 3 don't even go gold. There is no radio hit on albums 2 and 3. They just flat out got rejected, that is what happened to Autograph. I think you describe it better as they got lost in limbo. I also recall, around 1989, the drummer in Autograph resurfaced in some major label band, I think it was called Dirty White Boy, so that guy at least did get signed with a new band.

Where did the Autograph song "When I'm Gone" come from? It sounds like a song that was likely left off the first three RCA albums. Was it previously on a soundtrack? It definitely sounds like it came from the 1980's rather than 1997 - when Steve Plunkett drifted away from hard rock/AOR and did folky soft rock with the "7th Heaven" theme and stuff like that.
Steve is a nice enough guy, and even though it appears he developed a tapping technique independent of Eddie, he wasn't able to create a sound and the songs using the technique that Eddie did. After this interview, I went and listened to the first Autograph album, and apart from Turn Up The Radio and Send Her To Me (and a pretty cool riff in one of the later songs), the album sucks and it's easy to see why they didn't get more recognition. Writing a book on tappan and putting it in songs apart from Eddie doesn't mean a whole lot, if you can't write quality songs with that technique.
Steve's a great guitar player. Even though a LOT of people tapped, his style was quite unique and expressive. I always loved Autograph, and they hit right as I was starting to play guitar. So there was a lot to learn from Steve. The problem I had was that they were all over MTV and the radio, but it was difficult to actually find an album at the time. I don't really think that they got the backing from RCA that they should have.
