Fantastic episode. The ENTIRE documentary is phenomenal! Loved it from start to finish. As for what you should do next. Honestly, I think it's pretty easy. Do the Van Hagar years while also doing the DLR years (Eat 'em and Smile anyone?) and once you knock those out, you then have the Reunion Tour with DLR story to tell. Anyone else with me on this?!

I have never heard a more perfect synopsis of Eddie and Dave’s relationship than what you said at the 27:11 mark “In the beginning….” That is exactly spot on! The best partnerships are where people bring different but equally as strong skillsets to the cause. Dave was the quintessential Rock Star and Eddie was the mad genius. But like most partnerships that thing that makes them great is also what makes tears then apart. I respect and appreciate both men, I don’t blame either. It was what it was. RIP Eddie, and thank you both for being the soundtrack of my youth!

Alan....THANK YOU IMMENSELY for this incredible documentary. Ive read a LOT of Rock bios and watched a ton of rock docs and this one is, hands down, one of the best ive seen. Your level of research combined with great story telling chops and amazing editing/effects...just...wow. The fact that you pulled this off without formal backing AND having to pivot and edit the final product to accommodate a dissenter (sigh) and still come up with this amazing historical time capsule is really something special. I will be rewatching this endlessly and spreading it to all my music loving buds. You are the best...keep on creating...its your calling.

Van Halen's first 4 albums are their greatest works, after that they sucked, Diver Down, 1984, that was just pop nonsense and not what'd made them great, when their first album came out in 1978 in the middle of all that Disco nonsense it was like a breath of fresh air, but after their 4th album when MTV took a hold of them I think it went to their heads.
I was in the Army when they broke up and frankly didn't care, and as far as I was concerned Sammy Hagar joining them was his downfall to, Montrose and his first few solo albums especially Standing Hampton were fantastic, after he got with Van Halen it seems like their egos feed off each other and inflated to Mt Rushmore size fluff.
But those first 4 Van Halen albums will always be the only one's I've ever owned, and have always owned.

I lived in North Hollywood in the mid 80s. I remember seeing Ed driving in his Lamborghini on Ventura Blvd many times. He rented video tapes at a place called " 20/20 Video " by the Ralphs supermarket off of Ventura like we did. I went in there once with my Dad and the guy at the counter asked " Do you like Van Halen ? " I of course said " YEA "... He said , " Well , there he goes ! " Ed was walking out the door. I just watched. I would've never approached him when I was 15. I wish now that I would've at least tried !!! Lol

Fast Forward to the 5150 Tour. Totally different guy. I've heard he remembers very little of that tour. That would be a good thing. I'm sure he was burnt, drunk, and tired but the vibe was a total 180. God could that dude play guitar! I had goosebumps during warmup.

You know what’s crazy, 1984 is a great album. Every song is excellent. I hate to see people talk bad about the Sammy Hagar era of VH because it was Eddies idea. He was the one who wanted to go in a different direction and asked Sammy to come join the band. He really wanted to expand on the keyboard aspect of song creation and did what he did with that in mind I think (in my opinion).

When OU812 came out , I told an employee of our city sports arena I can't wait to see the band finally come up . He told me the band will never play with Hagar in the band . And they never showed up till Gary Cherone replaced Candyass . He told me why. Even though he told everyone he can't wait to play up here again , he found out he didn't sell out . He was a handful of tickets short of a sold out show . The diva threw a hissy fit and told the arena manager he'd never play up here again . And the 🐱 never did . I don't hate him for his lies about coming back up or keeping the band from finally playing up here . I hate Sam because he won't STFU and stop lying . The 🐱 quit .

I use to think like you. In the beginning I almost reluctantly listened to Van Hagar. Mainly because of what Fave meant to me. Sort of a stick by your friends attitude. Even though I was also Sammy fan and had most of his records. But as time went by I realized it’s not one or the other they are both equally great. Different but both great. And let’s face it, Sammy is a much more gifted vocalist and Those Van Hagar songs stand on their own. Don’t judge it just take it in ! ✌️

Edward is ridiculous. The Rolling Stones did not break up when Mick took some time to make a few movies around 1970. Keith Richards did not throw a hissy fit and kill the band. EVH did.
If anyone feels bad for Edward just imagine Keith Richards trying to take control of the Rolling Stones in 1970 building his own home studio and refusing to work elsewhere firing the producer and lead singer because they sometimes wouldn't greenlight and actually rejected some of his guitar riffs mocking Mick's movie career crying about waiting for him complaining that he asked Richards if he wanted to contribute soundtrack music then Richards goes out and finds a lame replacement for the Rolling Stones. Ridiculous.
Now imagine Richards replacing Mick with Hagar. We would have had 50 years of Hagar singing Satisfaction and nerd Hagar fans complaining that Mick danced around too much in the late 60s repeating forever that Hagar had more of a range than Jagger as if we all cared about range instead of the singer being a cool bad-ass with charisma swagger and chutzpah versus a nerd.
It was all so absurd insane and lame but it happened. VH was killed by EVH. The Rolling Stones was not killed by KR and continue to this day. The Rolling Stones even have a new single out today September 6th!

We were lucky to get two eras of the same band. We got all those great records from Ed, and a different side of him we’d never heard otherwise. And, we also got Eat em and Smile, and the dynamic duo of Steve Vai and Billy Sheehan was unleashed on the world. All of it was next level. We were lucky to get all that. Vai & Sheehan were brilliant players. But I don't think the WRITING was as memorable with the DLR Band as it was with Van Halen......'Goin' Crazy' was kind of borrowing Ed's abruption picked chords from 'Little Guitars'. And 'Shyboy' intro (with guitar & bass) was kind of an attempt to outdo Ed's intro on Hot For Teacher. It was top guns musicians trying to replicate what VH had already done. Although 'Good Times' on Skyscraper was a poignant good song.

They had all honed their craft to perfection and were at the top of their game. Those Van Hagar albums were fantastic but different. Whatever happened between Hagar and Ed was Sam's BIG mouth . It wasn't Ray Danniels being the new manager . Ed clarified that in a guitar magazine interview . Ray watched Sam start to boss Ed around . That was a big mistake on Sam's part . When he was promoting his POS book RED he said so himself it was HIS band . There's a video compilation where Sam said " This is MY band . " and right after that clip he said " Lead singer of the band , leader of the band, what's the difference ?" . What Sam didn't put in his book is where Sam said something to really really hurt and piss off Ed . This is when Ed really stuck it to Sam and rubbed his big nose into his own bullshit . Like Captain Candyass said in his book , he didn't want to do the Twister soundtrack , BUT he didn't anyways . And in my opinion this is the difference between the Halen Bros and Candyass . Ed never bragged about how he treated Sam to do the Twister soundtrack . He could've really stuck it to Sam publicly and said " The little f#cker said something to me and pissed me off so I made him my bitch and made him do his job . " . That wouldnt be polite . There are things they wouldn't talk about because it would be rude and disrespectful . Never forget , it was Sam that did most of the anti-Dave crap even when it got old @ the end of the 5150 tour .

@@BruceStephan Who's 'Captain Candyass' ?......lol.....I wouldn't have thought Sammy was 'candyass' because he was a boxer....I find the stuff about VH manager RAY DANIELS really confusing to be honest. I don't know WHAT to believe anymore.🤔 I mean there was this guy called 'The Count of Toulouse' on here commenting on these videos that claimed that Ray Daniels targeted Eddie & totally destroyed the band by turning him & Sammy against each other. But then there were others who say that this was a fiction invented by Sammy & point to discrepancies in Sammy's account of whether he resigned or was fired from the band & the chronology of events with the short lived DLR 1996 reunion... Some claim that Ray Daniels was only in it to make money out of the band but then others come in & say that Ray Daniels encouraged the band to do stuff for charity which would totally contradict this. On the Twister Soundtrack Sammy claimed that the films director Jan De Bont was on HIS SIDE approving of his lyric contributions but according to Ed in a 1996 Steven Rosen interview he said that De Bont had specifically said to Sammy -'Do not write lyrics about Tornadoes' .....& then Ed said Sammy came back with total Tornado stuff with all these research technical terms ('sky turning black, knuckles turning white. Headed for the hot Zone').....@user-rt9zq8rs9k did you see any interview materials that said WHAT Sammy said to Ed that p*ssed Ed off so much ? ....I know its all gossip/water under the bridge now but knowing it might make Ed's responses become more understandable to us.... Was Sammy cruel to him ? ....I know Ed was more sensitive a person than Sammy & Sammy could be a bit of a macho 'bull in a China shop' . Even if he was one of the best Vocalists in rock ever.

@@BruceStephan Sammy's book was kind of shocking really. I mean I've read the chapter & interviews where he boasts that Ray Daniels was scared of him which is not something people should brag about ....I mean , that's what bullies do isn't it ? I won't repeat what he wrote. It was kind of horrible... I think there was a lot of post facto ANGER in Sammy when he wrote that book because he felt he had been rejected. & that anger was him lashing out. I believe that after Ed passed away Sammy did actually REGRET writing some of the things he wrote. Particularly about Ed . And perhaps he shouldn't have sounded off on Alex either because of how much he was drinking back then. Alex didn't need to be reminded of that. Because both he & his little Brother lost their FATHER at 65 because of alcohol & when Alex suffered from losing his Dad he walked away from alcohol. 😔 But whenever I hear the historical conflicts between Ed, Alex with Sammy (& Mike) I think back to days in 1986 on Live Without a Net video. When it was 'All for one. And one for all' with no BITTERNESS....But just JOYOUS CAMARADERIE....Even if idiot Evans does sound like a sentimental old fool 😟😔

Then later on I heard Sammy say he didn't like what Ed was doing, (not playing very well) but didn't know he had cancer, and would have been more understanding if he knew. So I think the original break up was because of Dave? Heaven knows his ego exploded, and like you show here, Eddie was writing material that required another player, and I doubt Dave would have liked someone else sharing the spot light. Eddie said with Sammy being able to play guitar too, it allowed the band to go anywhere then and they all liked it. Don't ask which video's I heard this from, because I don't remember. 🤷‍♂ But they're out there.
