12 years ago my US Marine son stationed in Hawaii sends me a pic in the middle of the night. It’s him and Sammy in a bar. Seconds later the phone rings and Sammy says “Good morning dad!” We talked for about five or so minutes he’s telling me how much he appreciated my son’s service (he just got back from a tour in Afghanistan) and then the dude starts asking about the rest of my family and how they’re doing. No shit this guy’s the real deal. Really really nice.
Our family was a recipient of emergency funds from Sammy Hagar in Hawaii. We had an emergency medical flight for our daughter from Maui to Oahu. The hospital social worker gave us a $300 check to help with expenses for whatever the family needs when away from home on a different island and a card to write a thank you to Sammy Hagar. Brings tears to my eyes remembering this. So it is exactly how he tells it. Money used directly to the people in need. God Bless him and his Ohana!

He seems like a fantastic, down to earth person, a happy person, as I get older I realize more and more exactly, how paramount that is in life! Let's shoot for a late spring, early summer or early fall, for the best weather conditions!
Stevo, excellent podcast. I’ve been seeing Sammy Hagar shows since 19 82 and loved everyone of them. He’s got to be the most gracious rockstar in the history of rock ‘n’ roll. He’s a perfect example that nice guys don’t always finish last ! I grew-up in Etiwanda, next door to Fontana CA where Sammy grew up. He ALWAYS put on a great show when he played in SanBernardino at the Orange Pavilion …Lots of memories there.
Thanks for all the great interviews over the years Steve-O! The best part of every show is you know you are going to hear things that nobody has probably heard before, people will remember things that happened first hand and share them, and then it gets locked into the record of events for posterity! Grab all these guys from the 60s, 70s and 80s, cuz once their gone, their stories and memories are lost!
I've been blessed to be a friend of Sammy. He's the most positive charge, I've ever gotten from anyone. He was a neighbor and the opposite of a Downer. I always got stoked to see him.
Sammy has paid his dues and lived to tell the tales. Cheers Sammy ! This interview is one of the best interviews I have ever seen with anyone. Cheers Steve O.
I am in really bad health. So I figured even though I know Sammy won't see this, or maybe not even care. I wanted to say this to him. Sammy, I am 43. My brother got me into Van Halen when I was about 16 so in 96. At first I heard DLR singing, and it was good. I will admit that. But then he got me into the Van Hagar songs, and man... it blew me away. Made me a huge fan. And your music has helped me a lot. I have depression, and tried to kill myself in the past a few times. But as you can see, I even failed at that, lol. But your music. It always sooths me, to my soul. And I thank you so much for that. I had a triple bypass done when I was 34. I have diabetes. I am disabled, and live off of SSI. Stuck in apartments, and will never know what it is like to have my own home. But I have your music, and it helps me, if anything else it sooths me. So i wanted to say thank you one more time. Be blessed if you see this but not putting any stock into it. God Bless my friend and sorry for my rambles. Some times it is hard for me to put how I feel into words. On a side note, even at 43 and in very bad health. My wife got me a cheap guitar off Amazon, and I am going to try and learn to play it as I love music so much and always wanted to learn. If I could play even a quarter as good as you or Eddie... man that would be awesome. Steve-o I love you too man, you crazy ass! You and the rest of Jackass has brough so much laughs and love into my life. Thank you!
I'm 61 and on SSI disability myself and was suffering from depression some how can't remember it was suggested music might help and I always wanted to learn how to play guitar it really helped it took me few months but but I bought everything used off of Offer up $70 Epiphone sg guitar $35 40 watt 10" speaker Kramer amp and a$50 G1 four zoom multi effects processor that has more effects then i need the point I'm trying to make is it helped don't give up I also began praying to God and I'll say a prayer for you
Thank you Steve-O -- loved this! Hopefully Bob Weir will join you soon. I also vote for the other TOOL members to make an appearance (Adam, Danny, Justin) - cheers.
What a great interview! Both Steve-O and Sammy are so genuine, and have seen so much. Both were obviously enjoying the conversation and Steve-O knows how it's done! Fantastic!!
My first concert was Monsters of Rock at LA coliseum, 1988. Kingdom Come, Metallica, Dokken, Scorpions, and VH. Two riots. And that was the day I fell in love with Sammy and VH. (And yep, the LA show was postponed one day cause Sammy was sick.)
Absolutely fantastic interview. Sammy is correct, as a massive Van Halen fan, we have been completely pissed on. How can you ignore 4 x #1 albums in a row for fuck sake. Crazy. Great to see them finally re-release the Sammy era Van Halen albums. RIP EVH - thank you for the music.

Sammy Hagar is one of the most down known to Earth. Cool friendly people. And when he runs into somebody that he can't get along with. He's kind of surprise because he's always gotten along with people, and he's lived a long time in this business. And when he broke up with Van Halen, he couldn't really understand why but he just went along with it. And now he's got AA rum company. And he also still sanks and tours. And he's always thinking about other people and helping and donating money to charities , and he also has a A radio DJ show where he puts on music. That means things to him on a theme basis. And it, it's really interesting and I try to listen to it every week in my areaanyway always likes the guy and not getting any younger but he's not gonna get stuff at any point I can't see it. Best of luck red rocker
I recognized Sammy standing outside a Hard Rock Cafe in L.A. years ago. Even though I was a bit hammered, I still remember it like it was yesterday. I had actually just purchased 5150 on cassette (I was still carrying it in a shopping bag). I struck up a conversation, trying to work up the nerve to ask for an autograph. The guy was easy to talk to, totally down to earth. We talked for a good ten minutes about random stuff, before he finally said he had to leave. Before he hopped into a cab, he graciously signed my cassette. It was only after I got back to my hotel hours later that I noticed it was signed Steve Wilcox. Oh, well...
This was GREAT. Been a fan of VH since day 1 and recently (the last couple of days) started indulging myself back into their music. Started watching some vids and just watched the Roth - Hagar history with the band. Came across this in the side panel not knowing you had a rolling podcast. Always a fan of you Steve-O and truly humbled by your Epic biography doc and your truly astonishing transformation. This was one of the most entertaining hours I have had in a very long time. Sammy has to be the most genuine individual I have ever come across, the other comments I have read are indicative of that. A very insightful interview and truly a delight to listen to. Thanks Steve-O, Sammy and all your crew. Man that was great. Be well, be healthy and keep rollin'.
When he said numbers of albums, they looked as if 1 million or 10 million wasnt alot. TH-cam views on a free platform is diff than finding 1mll people going out, buying a $20 record. All these influencers would be broke, if each song cost that. If they wernt free, nobody would watch. Long live the good ole days when life was good.
Sammy is the man. I saw him in Montrose when they first started at the Baltimore Civic Center in Baltimore, Maryland and with Van Halen at the Capital Center in Largo, Maryland. Both were amazing shows. The man can sing!!!!!!!!
Before this episode, the only thing I thought of when I heard Van Halen or Sammy was that he tried to bang my girl. For many years I hated him for it. Now, I don't blame him, she was insanely hot, almost every guy would say she's a 10. She worked at Cabo Wabo on the beach back in the day and Hagar used to come in to the restaurant. He took a took a liking to her right away and she was head bartender within a month of meeting him. I was really proud of her. She would tell me all about every interaction and conversation because it was kind of a big deal. I was super jealous and insecure but I made sure not to let her know. As I listened to this episode, I thought about how she spoke about him less and less about him as time went on and I assumed she just thought I didn't want to hear about him flirting with her and hitting on her. NOW, that I've learned more about how women do things, along with the benefit of hindsight, I've realized 2 things: 1. Sammy Hagar is actually a pretty good dude. 2. Sammy Hagar definitely banged my GF.
That’s a great interview. Well done all round. I first heard Sammy on the ‘Footloose’ album, which was the first brand new record I bought as a kid. Fast forward to ‘88 and I bought ‘OU812’ on cassette when it came out. It was a bit confusing, as I’d bought ‘1984’ on tape earlier that same year and obviously there was a different singer. With no internet and minimal press (well, hardly anything that I saw as a 14 year old), the only info I had about Van Halen was in the liner notes and the music on the tapes. Then I worked backwards and got ‘5150’ on vinyl; then filled in the gaps by copying the DLR albums; then copied my mate’s ‘F.U.C.K’; then bought the live album, then copied ‘Balance’. My favourite songs featuring Sammy are probably ‘Mine All Mine’, ‘Cabo Wabo’, Feels So Good’, ‘When It’s Love’, ‘Love Walks In’, ‘5150’, ‘Dreams’. I finally got to see VH live on the VH3 tour with Gary Cherone in Auckland, New Zealand and I loved it.
@@maryellenrieger1874 Ha ha awesome! What’s your favourite song on the album? Mine was probably ‘I’m Free (Heaven Helps The Man)’. Thinking about it, this year I’ve played a couple of the ‘Footloose’ album songs on gigs: ‘Holding Out For A Hero’ in an acoustic duo and ‘Let’s Hear It For The Boy’ in a yacht rock band. Nothing to do with Sammy though. Also I remember the first time I saw the ‘Live Without A Net’ video: end of ‘89, the day our band won the school talent quest and we went back to one of the guys’ place to drink beer and watch the vid. I demanded to borrow it, then copied it to audio tape. Just re-reading my comment above, I’ve gotta apologise to VH for all the copying (or dubbing, as we called it) I did of their albums as a teenager. Rest assured I bought the CDs when I could afford it in my twenties.

Hilarious.

Omg I’ll never unhear her voice - sorry Stevo!! 😂😂😂
When he is talking about charity, food banks, and giving, he is the difference from talking the talk, and walking the walk. Love his music! Rock on Sammy!!!!🤘😎🤘
Sammy's one of the greats; genuine guy, genuine talent.
It takes time to become a fair, then good, then great interviewer. As Steve progresses through time the interviews are getting better and better. The prompt of the story and letting the person open up is the key to keep someone hooked into the event.
Thank you
One of the greatest interviews I’ve seen on any platform. Loved it from start to finish. Thanks Steve-O and crew 😊
I met Sammy Hagar twice. My cocktails were taller than him, but he was nice but really into the girls. Love the brutal honesty!
Talk about a dude that’s lived life to the fullest. Best attitude EVER! Thank you so much for this! Enjoyed every moment. 👍🏼
Awesome interview Steve-O. I have been a Sammy and VanHagar fan my entire life. He seems to be an absolutly genuine dude and someone more people should look up to.
I was always a DLR fan, but watching great interviews with Sammy over and over and over again, has really enlightened me, changed my mind about this man.
He seems like a fantastic, down to earth person, a happy person, as I get older I realize more and more exactly, how paramount that is in life!
This is a man I'd love to hang out with, have a great cigar and some fantastic Tequila with, just sipping, smoking and jawing all night long with!
Good times and good people, is what it's all ever been about!
Thanks for the vid guys!
Sammy Steve-O, you got a standing invitation any time you're in Toronto for a smoke, a drink and a chill in the Park!
For the people, by the people!
Love Sammy. Probably have seen him in concert more than anyone because he'll play ANYWHERE. Such a great human being. Great interview guys.
I've always loved Sammy . He's a real badass . Great musician , great singer, great energy , down to earth and aging like no other. Rock on Sammy.
Bobby Weir is the man, man. I wish Chief smokin moccasin could be around to see it
Our high school basketball team used to blast the Standing Hampton cassette in the locker room before games. Great memories!!!
What a great interview! Both Steve-O and Sammy are so genuine, and have seen so much. Both were obviously enjoying the conversation and Steve-O knows how it's done! Fantastic!!
Knocking it out of the park Steve O!! Maynard and Sammy podcasts? Legendary!!
One the absolute best free flowing organic interviews ever! This is pure Gold right here!
Absolutely fantastic interview. Sammy is correct, as a massive Van Halen fan, we have been completely pissed on. How can you ignore 4 x #1 albums in a row for fuck sake. Crazy. Great to see them finally re-release the Sammy era Van Halen albums. RIP EVH - thank you for the music.
love you sammy for your humanity, we need more people in this world like you.
Sammy was my first concert, and i didn't even know him.
Hagar opened for Boston in Bakersfield. I became an instant fan. What a run...
"Live Without a Net" is without a doubt one of the best concerts ever put to film. Sammy is an awesome dude, great musician, and inspiring speaker.
I played viewed that video so many times in the 80s and 90s ,(played along on guitar with also ) that is such a good concert video of VH , its happy ,its a party , its damn good playing and singing , Fam and friends nights enjoyed it too , pp where just a bit amazed ,that was a Cool band then !*_*) (their father Jan was still alive 1986

Its crazy to think Sammy was nearly 40 years old when he started in Van Halen, and nearly 50 when they disbanded.
I love Sammy. Still singing his ass off at 75. Still badass. Love him.
My mom was a full time nurse and still wr had to go to the food banks. They really helpful.
I think this is the best way someone has dealt with the fanboy steve-o. For me, probably the greatest episode so far, and that is saying something!
Great episode. Sammy is quite the guy. Love hearing how much he loves and cares for his community.
Sammy Hagar brings back so many great memories, love all his music. Steve-O you knocked this interview out of the ball house. Thank you Sammy for all the great music, and thank you Steve-O for having the #1 podcast of all time. ( if it's not #1 - it will be )
Sammy's been around a long time has loads of experience being a rock star and good stories to tell!
Sammy Hagar is what every alcoholic strives to achieve.
Class Act
I stood at Giant's Stadium in the Medowlands and sang with 90 thousand people...."It's got what it takes". Great memory!!
I love Sammy! He's such a sweet man , massively into the booze industry yet totally dropping all that to sip on some water with Steveo ❤
Sam, you forgot to mention VH1 and 1984 are diamond, 10 million sales.
He hit it dead on. Van Halen did piss on their fans. MANY times but, we're still here 🤟
Nothing but love for Sammy here in the San Bernardino region!
I was not expecting to see Sammy Hagar on your podcast.
I love Sammy, his book RED was an awesome read. Can’t believe he’s 75, epic!
Oh, well...
I'd argue Sammy Hagar is one of the coolest rock stars of all time
Love how he mentioned St. Louis, we go hard as hell for Sammy!
Absolutely love Sammy.... Ive saw hime live with VH 2x and solo 3x, he is incredible and still kicking ass today....
Yep.
Huge fan of Van Hagar and Montrose, never been a big Sammy solo fan. A real stand up dude. Smart, charitable, down to earth. Just a good dude.
That live Balance album will always be my favorite. So underrated with songs such as Feelin, seventh seal, and not enough. Such an epic live album👍
For sure!
Love seventh seal!!!!!!!
@@staceyroberts3468 That whole live concert is on TH-cam. From the Balance tour. Recorded in Toronto. Great show. My favorite.
I've seen Sammy a bunch of times going back about 30 years. He never disappoints.
Didn't know Steve O was so much into rock....Love this guy even more
I built Sammys spa in his house on Lake Arrowhead.
Badass place.
Sammy is the man. I saw him in Montrose when they first started at the Baltimore Civic Center in Baltimore, Maryland and with Van Halen at the Capital Center in Largo, Maryland. Both were amazing shows. The man can sing!!!!!!!!
One of the best Hagar interviews I’ve watched. Phenomenal
My new favorite podcast from Steve-O! Maynard was awesome but what a cool dude the Red Rocker is!
Thank you Steve O for this wonderful time watching you and Sammy the greatest
Kudos to you Sammy. One hell of a bad ass rock star and one hell of a charitable human being. Cheers.
I am so glad you guys noticed instantly the Vinnie Paul, coincidence.
RIP Darrel and Vinnie.
NOW, that I've learned more about how women do things, along with the benefit of hindsight, I've realized 2 things:
1. Sammy Hagar is actually a pretty good dude.
2. Sammy Hagar definitely banged my GF.
Mark my words! This man will live atleast 100-years old and still enjoying the beach and his tequila!
Hagar forgot to mention... it wasn't just Van Halen's 1984 album (with Jump) that sold a ton, the first album with Roth (the debut) also went diamond.
LOVED THIS!!! My mother loved Sammy! I think he reeled her in when he called us tractor pulling mf-ers at the 1st Farm Aid ❤❤❤
I was at the reunion show in Moline, Illinois back in 2004! Great show!
I also first heard Sammy on Footloose soundtrack too!
@@MisterWade74 cool story! The Girl Gets Around is my favorite, followed closely by I'm Free Heaven Helps The Man
I saw Sammy and VH in 1992 in Little Rock, Ar (April 8 I believe) and it was phenomenal! Sammy the man!
You're such a nice guy Steve-O! I appreciate all the things you do for people and animals. SOOO glad you got sober and ur still alive to do great things!! Happy for ya man!!
Sammy Hagar is a legend! Us St. Louisans know the man well!

This interview is fantastic. In every way. Thank you Steve-O and team 🙏🏽
Im not a big Van Halen fan but this interview was absolutely great. Dont get me wrong i appreciate Van Halen but i never bought an album. Sammy is one interesting guy that is for sure. I normally dont have the attention span for an hour+ TH-cam vid but this i watched all the way through in one sitting. Great interview guys.
Unbelievable the man is 75. He is a rock star in every sense of the word. Along with the ones who can still do it. Steven Tyler, Roth, etc, etc…
Great interview...I could listen to Sammy all day
