One theory is that at least the original two girls (Abigail and Betty Parris) were suffering from "conversion disorder." Conversion disorder is when the brain "converts" emotional stress in to physical symptoms (sensory problems, seizures, numbness, blindness, etc.). And believe me, those girls were under A LOT of stress. During that time, Reverend Parris (Betty's father and Abigail's guardian) had gotten into a dispute with Salem Village over his pay. It got to the point where the village actually stopped paying him in October 1691.There was a chance Parris and his family might not survive the winter. Tituba would also entertain Abigail, Betty, and other girls during the long winter nights by performing magic tricks. It would've been fascinating to watch- and a huge taboo in Puritan Society. The guilt and fear over getting caught would've been crushing.
I believe one of the women who was accused was well versed in medicinal herbs. In general, those who had knowledge of healing plants would have been under suspicion for making "potions"
I’m not sure this is completely accurate, but on a podcast about the Salem Witch Trials (Female Criminals if you are interested) I heard something about that the accusing girls likely targeted women who had decently well off partners, leaving vacancies for these girls to then marry into those well off families Something along those lines, I can’t remember exactly
Given they were puritans makes way too much sense, seriously when your such a zealot even the English back then couldn't stand you, you MIGHT want to take down a notch. Being a kid growing up in that environment probably meant most everything fun was a sin (ironically even Christmas was forbidden).
Deionte Morrison i had to research this a while back and one of the theories were that the girls were just bored because the puritans actually did restrict anything that would be fun to the kids. they were expected to act as adults and do school work so it’s really likely that the girls were super bored
Important to note that Tituba said she was beaten into a confession by Samuel Parris. So it shows how a lot of the witchcraft, like with Gilly Duncan in Berwick, started through torture and beatings.

What part of those news reporters or twitteratis were not educated or literate?
We don't even learn from our recent past, much less something that long ago. Though yes, intelligence DOES tend to help cut down on this stuff. An it's even MORE important for people to relate it to our Modern Era as to how these things continue to pop up today. Like when Police Officers FORCE people to confess, by hammering at them over and over until they break....only to find out later that WHOOPS! Turns out they had the wrong person after all.
education will help provided that the teachers are "enlightened". What's the use of education if the contents that you are receiving are all rubbish? My teacher talks like a puritan , fortunately I use my own head and try to see whether his "beliefs" are even logical and considerate.
@@Truth3305 education doesn't make an individual intelligent rather makes her/him capable to understand logic. It helps in using a scientific approach to problems rather than useless gossip.

The people in the village were idiots too and they actually killed her. I don't know the exact details on how she got murdered. But I remember it was on the news. It hardly happens anymore since people know better, but it was pretty prevalent in backward places till a decade ago.

There's a theory that the convulsions and stuff were real, but caused by ergot poisoning, a parasite fungus that likes to grow in rye. Supposedly there was a lot of rye in the region, and it's also possible that they weren't as picky with what they ate if they were in danger of starving (usually it's visible as some grains looking weirdly dark)
If you go to Salem, I highly suggest taking a tour offered by the Witch Hunt museum. It very interesting. Also, the most probable explanation for the trials is mass hysteria and PTSD. Abigail Williams likely suffered greatly from PTSD, her entire family was slaughtered in a fight between a neighboring group of Native Americans and she was the only one who survived, hence why she lived with her cousin. Her delusions likely started from nightmares and PTSD symptoms, and the highly repetitive and restrictive nature of colonial Puritan life made it very easy for her delusions to worsen. Reverend Parris, Abigail's uncle, immediately credited this to witchcraft likely because it would help him gain some legitimacy in his previously failing position of religious power. It's also the repetitive work-filled life that Salem lived in that made it so easy for mass hysteria to spread because having something new and dangerous happen disrupted day-to-day so badly that it made people paranoid and afraid which in turn only fed more into the hysteria. Sad how it became such a vicious cycle and how it hurt so many innocent people.
The emotional pain of being accused of something you didn't do, and then you're unable to prove yourself...
Reminds me of the Cosby second trial
It is very annoying indeed
Reminds me of my mother

Tituba would also entertain Abigail, Betty, and other girls during the long winter nights by performing magic tricks. It would've been fascinating to watch- and a huge taboo in Puritan Society. The guilt and fear over getting caught would've been crushing.
very interesting
I believe one of the women who was accused was well versed in medicinal herbs. In general, those who had knowledge of healing plants would have been under suspicion for making "potions"
If I am mistaken please let me know
I’m not sure this is completely accurate, but on a podcast about the Salem Witch Trials (Female Criminals if you are interested) I heard something about that the accusing girls likely targeted women who had decently well off partners, leaving vacancies for these girls to then marry into those well off families
Something along those lines, I can’t remember exactly

Given they were puritans makes way too much sense, seriously when your such a zealot even the English back then couldn't stand you, you MIGHT want to take down a notch. Being a kid growing up in that environment probably meant most everything fun was a sin (ironically even Christmas was forbidden).
Deionte Morrison i had to research this a while back and one of the theories were that the girls were just bored because the puritans actually did restrict anything that would be fun to the kids. they were expected to act as adults and do school work so it’s really likely that the girls were super bored

That's why I feel, education is necessary. It helps us to understand that what had happened in the past and why it happened. And today what changes we must bring in our thinking.
Yeah hardly helped especially when whole of the nation and national news channels like republic TV started to base Sushant Singh Suicide as "kala-zadu"( dark arts) done by his gf Riya when at best the poor girl was guilty of making a joint.
Education doesn’t = intelligence
@@Truth3305 education doesn't make an individual intelligent rather makes her/him capable to understand logic. It helps in using a scientific approach to problems rather than useless gossip.

The people in the village were idiots too and they actually killed her. I don't know the exact details on how she got murdered. But I remember it was on the news. I’d speculate that the cause was much closer to mass hysteria to anything else. Same for the Dancing Plague in Medieval France
Dan Brown actually wrote the reason for these witch hunts in his book 'the Da Vinci Code'.
Or probably they are suffering from an extreme case of Female Hysteria 😏
There's a theory that the convulsions and stuff were real, but caused by ergot poisoning, a parasite fungus that likes to grow in rye. I still cannot believe this happened
