I just had a thought about Tituba. She said “The devil came to me and bid me serve him.” Given that she was Reverend Parris’ slave,,, she definitely wasn’t lying 👀
Seems to me that if women quit buying stuff without pockets maybe the clothing manufacturers will get the hint. However, being male and not involved in the fashion industry, I could be wrong. Personally I don't buy shorts without pockets and if you think about it a certain way even my drawers have a pocket. Though from the male perspective, we don't have enough pockets because we always have to carry our girlfriends' wallets, phones, and possibly cigarettes. I have to wear cargo pants when I have a girlfriend. On a side note, someone once said that when a man stops wearing pockets he no longer cares about life.
@@revwroth3698 Sure. But when like 90% of stuff sold doesn't have pockets it's kind of difficult to refuse to buy some of that stuff. Even the few jeans that I have that do happen to have pockets can only really fit my mobile if I'm lucky. I guess I could just refuse to buy new pants and winnie the pooh-it from now on lmao. Ps. I'm surprised that u always carry your gf's stuff because my experience has been the opposite. I'm from Massachusetts, and I'd always heard that the girls accused Tituba so that they wouldn't get in trouble for disruptive behavior in church, and that the whole town went with it because they were tripping on shrooms.
I remember we had to read "The Witch of Blackbird Pond" for school but it was the book "Tituba of Salem Village" that really got me into the Salem Witch Trials. On team "Tituba was pragmatic" and the girls were a mix of social factors (our minds do play tricks amplified by peer pressure, unconsciously seeking praise, boredom...)
When i was 11 I wrote a story about a girl who was really a witch during the trials and was the one who forced Tituba to confess I was either smart as hell or i was having a mental breakdown

Kinda off topic, but I once had a dress with pockets. Plus I have a shirt with pockets, but it's a guy's small. But seriously, why can't girls have pockets? Not all of us like purses.
My English teacher was talking about this the other day and said that the trials came up because people were having issues with land and wanted to accuse others to steal their land. Children and woman accusing adults of witchcraft probably came about because (possibly) men wanted to blame others as revenge or to steal their land but they themselves didn't want it to be thrown back onto them so they decided they would rather risk their daughters/wives than risk themselves.

I'm pretty sure it was one of their ghost hunts which it seems they mainly do anymore. Did they do Elisa lam? I can't remember what Shane's theory was on that. And there's sooo much more mysteries to look into still like the lead glasses men, the rendlesham air base sightings, Area 51, the bell witch, michael Rockefeller disappearance, etc
Everyone who confessed to witchcraft in the trials was forced to with the threat of torture and death. All of the people who were killed were completely innocent.
@@terryslittlewhore I'm pretty sure they saw witches more like satanists because they really didn't accept other religions. I bet if someone had a different religion that wasn't even Wiccan or Pagan they would slap "Satanist" on them and kill them. But yeah witches really aren't bad.
@@terryslittlewhore I dont think you understand. In Christianity back then witchcraft mean you tapped into the demonic. Satanism is a little pretend cult where people draw funny circles into the ground and usually none of them know what Satan is, or what he has done. Real Satan worshipping is only caused by demonic influence, and is harmful to everyone including the person who worships Satan. Satan is the one who caused the world to suck for mankind, if he didn’t exist, there would be no death or sadness or sorrow. And the Devil does not give humans anything, he simply wants to see us all go to hell regardless who we are or what we have done. He is not the one who punishes evil, God is.
Have always found the Salem Witch Trials absolutely fascinating. Particularly as someone who can trace ancestry back to Martha Carrier, who was executed during the trials, seeing how the fear of the unknown and mob mentality resulted in so many deaths is just astounding. Thanks for covering it
That's probably why they added him into the series, because the first few videos of Unsolved had somebody else and then Shane came with his dry humour and it was less creepy
Alina Vaysfligel A woman started dancing like crazy and a bunch of people joined in. I think they died of starvation and exhaustion after a few days. Google the dancing plague and you'll find some pretty interesting stuff 😎
Yes.. I know right? They do tend to bring new evidence to light not mentioned on google. I would love to know more about that. It is very strange. Sorry for bad English?
@Cel Lyn But you must remember, the Salem Witch Trials were political. Most of the people accused and hung were either of high standing that were envied by the accusers parents or were social outcasts from the towns inhabitants. Tituba knew this and i'm sure there had been other isolated instances before the whole debaucal. The Puritans were quite duplicious and greedy.
I grew up in Salem! My uncle runs a history tour through there and used to tell me which buildings are haunted because of the Trials (spoiler: if it's a hotel, it's haunted), so cool to see Shane and Ryan visit!
oh that is so cool, my parents and i went on a bus tour ride there and the art museum cuz we're also in mass just not near salem and my stepmom and i practice witchcraft lol
You do realize it was WOMEN accusing these ppl of being "witches" right? And it wasnt only women that were killed... but men too. Or do u only care when it fits your moronic narrative?
I'm a direct descendant of the guy who was pressed to death in Salem, so I always love to see people investigate this! What I appreciate most here is that they went to Danvers. Danvers is today what Salem Village was in the time of the witchcraft trials. The town that is Salem today is not actually the location of the trials, even though they push the most touristy attractions, which is fun if you are looking for cheesy goodness (I am a personal fan of the Salem Witch Museum with the animatronics) but not necessarily very accurate.
jeez, i'm so sorry. also that's really interesting, i never knew that. I just assumed that because it's called Salem that they just removed the word village at some point in time.
@@momo5734 It's pretty interesting - in the olden days, Salem was split into two sections: Salem Village and Salem Town. Salem Village was mostly farmlands and had a much poorer population, whereas Salem Town was full of wealthy people and merchants. Salem Village is where the witchcraft stuff went down and was later renamed Danvers; Salem Town was shortened to Salem. Also don't be sorry; Giles was a horrible person and a complete jerk.
Also - plenty of actual witches do live in Salem now. Most moved in during modern times, way after the witch trials, but actual practicing witches now definitely live in Salem. Speaking as a practicing witch who frequently visits the area. Also: i highly recommend Essex Street in Salem as a place to go if you want to poke around at some witchcraft shops. Crow Haven's Corner is a nice one.
Dunno, probably. Seeing as how many random gravestones there are just lying around Salem i wouldn't be surprised if it is just by some random ghost. To my knowledge there's also a haunted hotel in Salem.
I feel like Shane was actually kinda saddened by those benches in the memorial. He looked pretty down and was super mellow and quiet when Ryan asked if they could leave.
my mom was part of an organization known as "daughters of the american revolution," where descendants of those who fought in the american revolution would meet and discuss their ancestors. one time, my mom stumbled upon a convention of wiccans and those who currently practiced witchcraft (my mom said it was really cool). while there, my mom met, befriended, and *had* *dinner* with a descendant of sarah good, one of the women who was killed in the salem witch trials. the woman had a panel at the convention. just thought it would be cool to mention that sarah, even though wrongfully killed, was getting some recognition from beyond the grave
Jason Phillips not necessarily. anyone who has family who fought in the war is welcome to join. sure, there are some southern ladies who are racist, but my mom isn’t.
Sometimes I wonder, since it was mostly women and between such young ages such as 9-20 years old, wether the men of the community just accused them to cover up sexual assault .. Like who are people gonna believe? A girl that’s accused to be in cahoots with the literal devil and has supposedly done unspeakable acts or the “good, hardworking and law-abiding” man from down the street? You know? It’s like this “if you tell anyone I’ll accuse you of witchcraft” or something A terrible, terrible game with no winners, really :/
Well it would kinda make sense but not really because women were being assaulted then punished for enticing the men so it never mattered anyways if you came out you were punished same as today
i love how at the start of every episode ryan goes' as part of our ongoing investigation into the question are ghosts real' and the camera goes to shane's face that's just like::: 😐😑🙄
It’s really hard for me to process information but these videos are helping me a lot with history it also helped with when I moved or when I was sick or bored. I want to thank Shane and Ryan for helping me with a lot!
Back during the witch trials, if you WILLINGLY admitted to being a witch, they gave you mercy and tried to convert you back to being "holy". But if you kept denying that you were a witch, they'd do whatever they could to get you to confess. Punishments were one way of getting you to spill out and confess. But if you still denied being a witch, they'd eventually hang you. That's why tituba confessed and tried to come up with a vivid story
Remember when The Professor started talking about it, and Ryan pipes up, "Wait! Is this that dancing thing in France?!?! I've heard of that!" THIS is where he heard about it! hahahaha
I don’t think that Shane realizes how right he was when he said “he’s just pointing at things and saying ‘yup, that’s a witch’”

My English teacher was talking about this the other day and said that the trials came up because people were having issues with land and wanted to accuse others to steal their land.

Sorry for bad English?
Tituba was the smartest one. She knew they wouldn't kill her because she was a slave, but would believe her confession.

Fun fact! It was recently found out that the location of the hangings of the Salem Witch Trials is behind what is now... a Walgreens. Seriously.
Or the area where the deceased were buried. Either way, behind the walgreens. Weird spot for historical witch accusation stuff.
Is the Walgreens haunted?
Dunno, probably. Seeing as how many random gravestones there are just lying around Salem i wouldn't be surprised if it is just by some random ghost. To my knowledge there's also a haunted hotel in Salem.
