Gruesome but it wasn't a reason for the end of the Trials. The end came when one of the girls accused a Judge's wife of being a witch. So the Court said OK, now you've gone too far.

He didnt deny being a witch, he refused to make a plea. Gilty or innocent. Because he knew if he did so that the court would seize his property and land when he died instead of letting it go to his successors. He said more weight so he could be killed on his own terms.

Everyone forgets that the dude who was most accusing others of witchcraft was buying up their properties for pennies at public auction after they were executed

Giles Corey did not accuse his wife of anything --- the only thing he was reported as saying was that his wife sure did like reading books more than his two previous wives had ever done.

I grew up in Salem. The house the sheriff lived in is now downtown, behind a Dunkin' Donuts. I don't believe in the supernatural but to this day really screwed up shit keeps happening to Salem Sherrifs.

The Sheriff wore his shelltoe Adidas to the hanging...never know when a break dance battle might ignite.

A few fun facts: Nathaniel Hawthorne, a famous American author, who’s most famous work was The Scarlet Letter, was born in Salem. And is actually a direct descendant of John Hathorne (Nathaniel added the W to the name to separate himself from the family name) who was one of the judges in the Salem Witch Trials. His works were often anti-Puritan due to his families past that he found shameful.

His wife's crime was that she read books.

The reason Giles wouldn’t plead one way or the other was because either way he would be found guilty and his land would be auctioned off, so when he died before the trial actually started, his children got the land.
