Being a good storyteller is the most underrated personality trait. If you are a good storyteller people will forgive a lot of other flaws. People who are naturally good at it are just captivating! Because humans literally spend almost 100% of their time telling stories to each other. Talking to their friends telling stories about their life to them, talking to family members, telling parents stories from work. So it really is one of the MOST important personality traits. And it can be learned like any skill.

  • @GreenVenus
    @GreenVenus หลายเดือนก่อน +65

A good conversationalist could come up with many responses to engage with those. "What would you eat for 100?" "I wonder if the bird had a family to feed!" "Well that's a 'sweet' bonus! Must've been your lucky day."

There's nothing wrong with the stories, it's about delivering them, I guess. It could be like "guys, today's my lucky day! I got extra whipped cream in my chocolate for free!" And her friends would be glad for her.
That's what I'm struggling with, and learning how to do it: the delivery. Not everything needs to be told in chronological order. Storytelling is hard, but it's worth it!

    • @oishikaray2767

Finding this fucking fascinating, ty, cos my issue is that chronology doesn’t exist in my brain!!!!!!!!! ❤❤❤❤
also I love and appreciate the idea that storytelling is hard but worth it…idk it’s giving me some sort of hope cos it’s making me think of storytelling that I find hard to follow -
which doesn’t often have rhyme or reason in why - and maybeeeeee hmmm how the story listener
      - like, when I learn to enjoy diff types of storytelling -
that’s also hard and worth it??? I don’t try to force myself into it all (cos I can’t)
but when I naturally find it - it’s wonderful
      - maybe thats true conversationally too,
maybe it’s a two way street when it comes to stories! Idk!
Thank u for the journalling prompt lolol but genuinely thank u friend xxxxxx

It’s not that, it’s the way she’s delivering it. The way she’s saying it makes it sound like it’s a premise when she should make it sound more like a punchline. • @melanieodhner4686

@@kiera6326 Exactly!!! A lot of the problem is tone and pacing.
You can't tell a story in a tone of, "Wait until you hear this...." and then have the button at the end be something extremely predictable like someone saying "wow" or the bird flying away.
If you only have one thing to say, frame it as an observation, not a story. "Today I saw a bird with a whole slice of bread in its mouth. Like, there was more bread than bird."

It's not the literal description of events that would instill the excitement in the other, on some level you are interpreting anyway, so commit to that instead.
Don't try to reenact, ask yourself what the point is
My sibling is like that somehow, a lot of "and then this and then that, then they said this and then that replied thot and then then and then thon"
Maybe 'cite' less and describe more?
Also not all events like that are for 'retelling' anyway. They are for you to wonder ponder and marvel, if you try to just forward the excitement you might already be missing the point from the start. Of course it can be exciting that you got excited - but that needs to be told from another point of view: not the crude repetition of what *happened* to you - but rather what happened _to you_

It’s still actually good story telling. Even if what she’s saying isn’t very interesting, she engages the audience and explains the “story” well. Truely terrible story telling is when the person will begin the story from the middle, go back to the beginning, then back to the middle and so on. With constant pauses and trying to remember details. The story become disjointed and you can’t follow along, or get a good idea of what’s even trying be conveyed. They aren’t animated through conversation and maybe appear to almost be talking to themselves. You just know they’ve lost your attention within the first 5 seconds.

I’ve never felt so seen. Everytime I tell a story my friends look at me like 🙂😐

Okay maybe this is just my autism but what is she doing wrong? This seems like normal storytelling to me. She’s just talking about her week.

In my vocal pedagogy class we had an exercise where we would tell about how our day started. Some people had a very typical morning, some were more exciting, but that one girl told us a story about her spotting a squirrel on a tree and she told it exactly the way she was speaking about that bird and a bread 😭
