I send birthday gifts and Christmas gifts to my husband, 3 kids, their spouses and 9 grandkids every year. I am also in charge of sending お土産 (gifts given to colleagues when you travel to another country and is pronounced "omiyage") I am also in charge of sending otoshidama (hong bao in Mandarin aka The Red Envelopes) to all the children and grandchildren at the New Year. This year my husband got me a sewing machine for 'Christmas'. He took me to have my nails done and out dinner at my favorite vegetarian place for my birthday. My eldest son's wife sent me a birthday card on behalf of her, my son and the 3 grandkids in their family. This was a good year for me. I am grateful to be remembered by two people this year as it is usually just my husband. My kids tried to visit me once all together for my birthday about 10 years ago. They all fought each other so much... It was the last time. I guess it soured them on remembering my birthday and such. But such is life. I I gave up expecting balance or reciprocity long ago, though it does sometimes make me sad when no one calls on special days or sends a letter. I am working on not letting it bother me anymore. Freedom from attachment for the sake of enlightenment ne? I am trying to learn to just be grateful to be able to send a little reminder to my family overseas that I will love and remember them as long as I am alive. So many are not able to give more than a smile. But a smile is appreciated too. 😊

That amount of laxatives reminds me of the amount my mom put on my aunt’s drink when they were teenagers and my mom was mad at my aunt during a trip. They were in an airplane. My mom fell asleep and woke up because the stewardess was throwing air freshener EVERYWHERE and covering her nose. The stewardess had also helped my mom mix the laxatives with my aunt’s drink. Everyone was in on it. It’s been over 25 years and my aunt still doesn’t know it was my mom.
