Can I Turn a Gas Grill into a smoker Experiment, Is it the same thing? Nope!

  • I take our little used Char Broil Commercial Tru Infrared gas grill and do an experiment: to find out if you can turn a gas grill into a smoker. Either charcoal, wood or a combination of the two. The concept is pretty much well established in the Weber Kettle community and if you watch a lot of our videos you will see we do it quite a lot. But not everyone has room for 2, 3, or more cookers and some folks may like to try to convert their gas grill temporarily into a smoker. I show you how to do a simple smoker modification that can be reversed so as not to permanently change the gas grill at all. This way if you want to see it or give it away there isn't any loss of value. I use my Fire Board to examine two temperature zones while I try and figure out what the heck is going on here! You'll just have to watch to the end and find out if this is a good idea or just toss in the towel and buy a real smoker. Cheers!

Glad you were honest and called it s fail like it was. Temperature control using vent adjustment as critical should not be ignored.

Great video! I have an older Weber gas grill that I never use and have always thought about doing that to it. Thank you for talking me out of it. Love the channel. I love lamb almost as much as you.

Cool video Todd! Like you said, if the grill was a little bit more air tight, it might work. 👍🏼

Yeah, all them little various vent holes and slots could be sealed up but the sides of the lid are giant and would need some lava lock gasket material around that I think. The factory thermometer hole could be used as the single exit vent I suppose. At that point you might as well get a Char Griller at Home Depot! lol

GreenhornBBQbeer Well, I’ve already been using a smoker tube and sometimes simple aluminum foil pouches to smoke on my gas grill. You gave me the idea of putting in one charcoal briquette in a smoker tube followed by a little bit of wood then another briquette. More wood, another briquette and so on. There would not be enough briquettes to overheat the grill but I’m imagining I would get some charcoal taste out of it. I have no idea if that would even work but I may try it. What do you think?

@@HobiesGarageBBQ you know some companies sell charcoal flavored pellets...

GreenhornBBQbeer Sure do! I even did a video review on my channel of them.
I’ve use them but it still doesn’t give me enough of the charcoal taste. In fact if I try this I’ll use the charcoal pellets and alternate with charcoal briquettes to test it out.

Snake method add some lit coals in one end and then put unlit charcoal next to it so it slowly burns across. that way you can have a low and slow

Interesting video. In my opinion it's still cheaper, faster and more efficient to go find a basic charcoal grill without all the bells and whistles.

Great experiment, maybe a piece of foil on top of the coals acting as a heat deflector?

Cool idea but makes sense that fire management would be a pain in the neck. Interesting that it leaks so much, I suppose it does matter as much for gas.

Yeah, gas grills do have alot of vent slots and holes. And the lid has pinky finger sized gap all the way around.

When I use mine like this the cook point only gets to about 275 to 300. A little high but gets me a good ring and flavor.

@@GreenhornBBQbeer char-griller, but it's dual sided. One side is charcoal, the other is gas. I use the charcoal side, offsetting without a full load of coals. It's also a fairly large grill area so I move the meat as far from the heat as possible.

  • @stick66

I recently tried this. Even after covering holes I could not get temp. above 165. When you open cover to add more coals you lose all heat and start all over again.
