Sierra Ferrell puts her own spin on "Don't Let Your Deal Go Down" by the Foggy Mountain Boys. She is playing a c1939 Gibson SJ-100. cartervintage.com/products/gi...
This song needs to be recorded ASAP or even turning this live session into a single. So freakin good I swear. Charlie Poole and all the other greats who covered would be very proud.
@@TheSkyenet Yep, they’d overproduce the dickens out of it and ruin it too. Most of the songs on her album would’ve been perfect if the producers would’ve kept their hands off of them
Sierra Ferrell and Josie Tony are one of those rare combinations that in their best moments are able to produce pure musical magic. This gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it. I seriously hope they will get back together soon!
I just sampled 25+ different versions of this song on iTunes and wanted so badly for a recorded Sierra Farrell version to be on the list. Love how she plays the tune at a less frenetic tempo, the musicianship is so pure, her unique sound, and her slow down at the end w the soulful voicings is stunning. Singing it as a woman also gives the lyrics a different spin and resonance. Y’all oughtta put this out as an audio single, also. Please.
Takes a pretty extraordinary talent to stand to the right of Sierra Ferrell night after night, and Josie does it amazingly well. Her solo stuff is also pretty neat. You should hear it. She’s very talented and that’s where the focus should be
The fiddle is so atmospheric. I thought the strings at the beginning of the video was a creek of my door or floorboards and got spooked.😂 Such a good song.
Sierra Ferrell is an immensely talented and creative artist. Not only does her version of "Deal" need to be on record, but her performance of "29" with her Charleston WV bandmates, 600 Lbs of Sin, seriously needs to be available for download or on a CD. It is one of the most powerful and meaningful songs about the coal world of Appalachia that I have ever heard. Sierra, you are totally AMAZING!!
Re: "... her performance of "29" with her Charleston WV bandmates, 600 Lbs of Sin," > Word: The song you refer to was the first perforance of her singing I ever came across on TH-cam, blew me away (the guitar playing as well), and have been a fan ever since. Recently bought her outstanding album, "Long Time Coming." Highly recommended. The people she is working with now indicate she is clearly a known talent now.
Having been said that there are two kinds of music On Earth, music for the people and music for the Gods, somehow you folks have managed to connect these two expressions.
Sierra Ferrell just keeps getting better and better with each performance. Saw her live a month ago and she had a packed house eating out of the palm of her hand. This is an an exquisite performance and recording. Thank you!
That was mighty fine. The singing with harmonies along with the fabulous fiddle, guitar and bass playing made for an excellent listening experience.👍👍🇨🇦
An astonishingly beautiful, profoundly watchable, performance from start to finish. Your singing tell's the song's story like nobody I ever heard. Your super voice, phrasing, ornamentation, and your likeable presence creates a real sense of true drama. Also, I really appreciate your guitar style, which has great picking accuracy and rhythm. The bass player could connect to your every chord change. That fluent fiddle solo lifts the whole work up in a different way. And the end of the song is as haunting as its poignant opening.
Benny Thomason's day job for his whole life was as an automechnic, and he was the primary teacher of Mark O'Connor... just trivia. Interesting, Benny retired and lived just 20 miles or so down the road from where Josie grew up, but I've seen no indication she ever would have know about Benny growing up.
what is it about this song ... every single time I play it, I feel at peace. Sierra, COME TO CARDIFF WALES and say hello ... been listening to you for a good seven years at least from when I discovered videos of you playing on the streets of New Orleans!. Whatever happens, you will already be a legend for so many.
What have you done to garner the kind of respect in your world that Josey has in hers? She’s lovely and talented. Go scurry back under your bridge Andrew
Literally almost without words to decribe how good this is. That very first note when the base comes in and it hits you. The one and only Sierra Ferrell. A voice so beautiful, powerful, authentic and unique. Sierra Ferrell has joined the ranks of America's finest bluegrass and country singers. this is the first time i've heard the song and loved it. I wanted to compare so i listened to all the other covers and the original. this is the best version hands down
Funny I did pretty much the same thing. In particular I wanted to see if the radical change in tempo and yodeling at the end was hers or followed an earlier version. AFAICT that’s all Sierra. I also love the call and response between her vocals and the fiddle at a few points.
Amazing! Her voice is so heartfelt. It grabs my core and pulls me in. I've been in the music business for 50 years and I was /am and instant Fan! Thank You Sierra!!
I notice it in all of Sierra's live recordings: she is much more authentic, lively and cheeky live than on her studio recordings. Is it because of the so-called producers, who have already bent many great artists in the wrong direction in a supposedly "commercial" way? Sierra please, please stay as you are live. By the way, a big compliment to the two musicians (violin and bass)!
Thanks for having us!!
Awesome take on this song. Never would have thought to play it this slow. Very cool.

She is good. She has just a smidge of that post-adele (sic) slurred-enunciation thing but she might lose that once she hits nanci griffith status.
