  • While Tesla provides a lot of great choices for listening to music, the most obvious choice for many, is not as easy or as effortless as it should be. If you want to listen to your own music selections via USB, you'll quickly learn that getting the songs to pick up where they left off is easier said than done. In this video, I describe an easy way to seamlessly listen to music on USB, while also safely storing your Teslacam and Sentry Mode footage on the same physical USB drive. cheers!

    I've had my new Model 3 for a week and this was driving me crazy.
    Having seen this video and using "Play a song from USB" all is calm again!
    Many thanks for posting this as I couldn't find any solution online or in the manual. I even asked my local Tesla dealership and they had no idea!

    2023 model y. I got a 1TB ssd to play mp3 & record tesla cam. Haven’t been able to get this to play songs. I’ll try again.
    Don’t remember if I formatted it with 2 partitions.
    Candidly, I hate the Tesla interface, with all functions buried in sub menus. I drive my Audi more because of this. I think Tesla went too far with an all screen interface. Some functions need to be accessible automatically. I wish they’d add the ability to customize the Home Screen & allow large icons for frequently used items. I have to have reading glasses on while driving to change setting. FAIL.

      You need 2 partitions minimum. Use the car to format the drive first, then take it to your PC/MAC and delete the main partition and then create two of them (three if you want lightshow to work but I haven't tested this yet). This will ensure that the drive is in the correct partition layout. Format each partition to ExFat, and label the first one 'TeslaCam'. The second one can be called whatever (I used 'TeslaMedia').
      However, the fact that the USB implementation is shite, (only one port in the car works and its the one in the glovebox that's really difficult to reach, apart from a long list of other issues), I will have to get around to hacking my M3 to get carplay working, or i'm going to have to add another screen. Elon claiming that his system is better, shows how deluded he really is.

    Many thanks for a VERY informative video.
    I have a scheduled delivery setup this Friday in Tampa, Florida for my Model Y LR from Austin Texas.
    This is the information I have been looking for. The voice command "Play a song from USB"
    is a real treasure for me.
    What size did you make each of the partitions on the USB 256 GB card,
    i.e.
    Partition #1: Music with various folders (SIZE?) _______GB
    Partition #2 Teslacam and Sentry Mode (SIZE?) _______GB
    The reason I ask is that video is disk space hungry while you can put a lot of songs of a very small SD card.
    YOU ARE THE MAN!!!!! 🙂🙂🙂🙂

    I have a 2023 Tesla Model 3 RWD and I can't get the USB icon to show up. I am using one of the ports inside the console that is supposed to be data ready according to the online Owners manual. I tried a couple of USB's formatted with exFAT32 and no-go.

    • @tesladura3085
      @tesladura3085  ปีที่แล้ว

      From the dashcam section of the Tesla Model 3 owners manual: "For some vehicles manufactured after approximately November 1, 2021, the center console USB ports may only support charging devices. Use the USB port inside the glove box for all other functions." I would advise you to use the glovebox USB to store your dashcam and music folders. Partition the USB drive first.

    • @TheOriginalCoda
      @TheOriginalCoda 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It's only in the glovebox where you can plug a drive. The others can only charge. Absolutely ridiculous.

      Hey Tryane! You are SO welcome. I struggled with the solution for this for weeks after I got my Model 3. It was driving me nuts! It would be so nice if Tesla added "USB" as one of the music sources. Then, the voice command wouldn't even be necessary. But in the meantime, it's a quick and easy patch.

    I Agree that teslas music system is terrible if you don't want to stream.
    Such a poorly designed interface, no shuffle in 2024! No favourites, no playlist, No graphics, just plain text interface.
    I can't believe how awful the tesla UI is generally, but usb integration is one of the really bad bits.

    • @tesladura3085
      @tesladura3085  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      There is shuffle for USB audio, just to be clear. You can also choose favorites. Cheers. I really wish that they could leave the USB power on, without significant phantom drain. BTW, since upgrading my phone, I have started using an automated routine to automatically start playing music via Bluetooth upon entering the car. It works really well, too.

      @@tesladura3085 Can you explain how you do this please? It would be very helpful. Thanks for this video, I wanted to see how easy it is to find music on the ssd and it looks ok.

    • @tesladura3085
      @tesladura3085  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@alanspence1716 I think I explained it in the video, no? First, you need a High Endurance Mini SD card and a USB adapter for it. On your computer, partition the SD card into two virtual drives. Create a folder for one called Teslacam and A different folder in the other drive partition called Music. Load up your FLAC, .WAV or .mp3 files in the music folder. Insert the USB drive into your Tesla's data USB port. Voila!

      @@tesladura3085Yes your video was very clear thank you but unfortunately my question clearly wasn't, sorry. My question is how you set up the automated routine to automatically start playing music via Bluetooth on entering the car. As a Tesla newbie any pointers as to how to do this would be much appreciated. Thank you.

    • @tesladura3085
      @tesladura3085  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@alanspence1716 Ah, that's very different! But also doable. There may be other videos on TH-cam about this, but here goes.
      1. Pair and Set Default Audio Source: First, ensure your Bluetooth device is paired with your Tesla. Navigate to Controls > Bluetooth to pair your device if not already done. Then, set Bluetooth as your primary audio source by going to Controls > Media > Audio Sources and selecting Bluetooth.
      2. Auto-Connect and Phone Settings: Enable auto-connect for your Bluetooth device in your Tesla's Bluetooth settings. Also, check your phone's Bluetooth settings to ensure it's set to automatically reconnect and play media through your Tesla. While Tesla itself doesn't start music automatically, you can explore phone settings or apps like Tasker for Android or car automation apps for iOS to initiate playback upon connection.
      3. Software and Third-Party Solutions: Keep your Tesla's software updated for new features. If Tesla's built-in features don't meet your needs, consider third-party apps or scripts from communities like TeslaFi or TMC for more advanced automation, although Tesla doesn't natively support starting music playback automatically from Bluetooth devices upon entering the car. IIn my case, my Samsung Android has an automation feature called Modes and Routines in settings. I set up a Routine so when upon detecting a Bluetooth connection to my Tesla, it will automatically open my music app and start playing.

    • @tesladura3085
      @tesladura3085  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! If I understand you correctly, you switch between drives, depending on what music you're in the mood for? The solution would be to combine them ALL your music into ONE property formatted drive. Place them in different folders if you wish. When you start up the car after it has been asleep and say "play a song from USB", it will return to the last folder/song played. Insofar as I know, our Model 3's only have two data USB ports. All the rest are power only. I suppose you could dedicate one data port to Teslacam footage and the other to music. BTW, your Tesla USB will play .mp3, .wav and FLAC files. With FLAC, you're going to get the highest possible fidelity. Much better than streaming.
