Gordon Murray reveals the secrets to his new 663bhp T50 supercar. Better than the McLaren F1?

  • Gordon Murray takes me round the GMA T.50 and explains why he decided to launch this new supercar now, which he sees as the rightful successor to the mighty McLaren F1. With a bespoke 3.9litre Cosworth V12 that pumps out 663bhp at an incredible 11,500rpm and weighing only 986kg at the kerb, performance is going to be astonishing. Yet there's enough luggage space to make this a usable GT. The T.50 looks to be a truly amazing new supercar..

      John Simard That’s got nothing to do with car driving. Just like F1 is the pinnacle of motor sports, light cars with ultimate handling capabilities is the pinnacle of sports cars. Straight line performance is of inferior importance. That said, I have no doubt that this car will crush Tesla’s 10.5-10.4 quartermile time. The McLaren P1 does the quartermile in 9.8, and this will almost certainly be faster than that.

    • @gigiminiotti
      @gigiminiotti 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes I've been thinking for quite some time about this nonsensical fashion of enlarging, lengthening, widening. Take the humble Polo for example, or the even humbler Punto: they're now at least 30% bigger and wider than their ancestors, the Polo originally conceived as a practical little eurobox, her sibling now as big as a series 6-7 Golf, the old series 2 Punto a compact and nimble-looking (appearances can be deceiving...) little thing, now a ponderous oversized object with wannabe-a-D segment delusions. Or the Ka, or the Fiesta. In times when traffic congestion, parking spaces, fuel prices and whatsnot are crucial issues, I think car designers ought to focus on achieving the same modern standards of comfort and economy without listening to marketing gurus and proxy copycats 'suggestions'. Now, a modern and efficient, downsized environment- and wallet -friendly, no-nonsense vehicle would be the real new boy in town! Having said this, as regards the T.50, I think that Mr Murray has just made an outstanding, free-thinking and genial comeback, and he couldn't have had a more appropriate interviewer than our usual intelligent, classy, elegantly competent Harry Metcalfe: the various Top Gears, Jay Lenos, Doug De Muros etc (just who the heck do they think they are?) can quietly sit down, have their 2 pints of Pumpkin Spice Starbucks, count their USD and hope, one day, to have Harry's Garage style and casual professionalism. Though I doubt that very much.

      I think the car could have used some rubbish , it looks kind of like an anorexic frog. Supercar aggression comes from some angularity and edginess. Just not too much of it. 13:47 The sketch is really good , it just needs lower front wheel arches and the windshield needs to move rearward about 6 inches. They would fly off the shelves.

    1:19 that is one BEAUTIFUL engine!
    I LOVE the fact that this comes with a naturally-aspirated engine, in a world where every car from the soccer mom SUV to the highest performing Le Mans prototypes and F1 cars are using turbos for "easy" power, a pure NA engine revving high is like a slice of car heaven.
    And again I swear as pretty as the T50 looks that engine surpasses the car itself in beauty and engineering elegance!

      Turbos, atleast in their modern form, are boring, lame, lifeless, etc. In my opinion of course. Tbh, I don’t even consider forced induction cars to be in the same class as NA. That’s why I hate it when people compare cars like the 720s to the 812 super fast. When is a terrible sounding, boring v8 with a lifeless engine. The other is a screaming NA V12 making 800 horses from 12 big cylinders. There’s just not a comparison, you could stick a turbo or two in the 812 and it would be making 1000+ hp. But that’s just boring....

    • @huyra8019
      @huyra8019 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@mikemoggerson6651 I dont think you can really say that one car is beneath another due to engineering differences. I love the Huayra because the chassis is amazing and it is vilified by people who peddle the ideology that N/A cars are the best things ever made. Its hard to love cars that are made through the resentment of the present. i like the idea of looking into the past, but if it dosent improve the future and is only made to appease those who look into the past. why even bother making the t50 in the first place.

    Harry and Gordon, two amazingly humble, and brilliantly minded enthusiasts in one place! Gordon is such a regular, no nonsense, but fun chasing "man's man", that I feel like it extends that affectation to his car as well. I want to believe every word he says because the compassion for his creation is so genuine. I'm very happy there's a follow up to the F1, I'll surely never see, or drive one, but knowing such a car is out there, and a man like Gordon persists as an asset to the now, and the future of our dream cars, gives me hope, and a smile. GG sir! And thank you Harry, for asking all the right questions, once again, brilliantly attacking a subject with calm, and sincerity, while his smile gives away the internal childlike amazement so well restrained, my knees would be shaking as if I were playing the solo to Comfortably Numb with David Gilmour watching. Coolness in action.

    Pure but raw engineering perfection. People like Gordon Murray are a credit to human race. On a different note, I’m not sure how many of the 100 owners of the T.50 will be as passionate as Gordon about the 30 litres of luggage space that Gordon has worked so hard to design into the car. Surely he won’t need me telling him that the stereotypical multimillion/billionaire customer that will be a GMA customer will choose to use another car from their fleet of 50 for their shopping trip to Harvey Nichols
