The T.50 and T.50s are just two big middle fingers to the modern automotive industry, and I love it! The fact that Gordon values "what you need" rather than "what you think you need" is so refreshing. What a legend!
Car companies these days have become obsessed with focus groups telling them what they think they want, so every car in a class ends up very similar. Back in the "good old days", car makers just made something and you either bought it or not. A lot of people didn't get the Renault Espace when first released, but now MPV's are everywhere. No focus group would have told Renault they needed a van with lots of seats and windows.
True ...The most beloved and iconic cars are just ONE man's idea: VW transporter and Austin Mini would never have made it past a focus group of Sheeple who would have been disturbed by the stark utility of those legends.

He buys what he likes, not what people are "supposed" to like when they have money. It shows genuine enthusiasm instead of merely signaling affluence. I also think it takes some balls to exhibit cars from other manufacturers in a room designed to sell your new T50s. If I were in the market for a new supercar and I could afford the 3.1 million for a T50s, I'd take one look around that showroom and probably try to buy the Abarth 2000 or one of those Lotus cars.

This was brilliant! It's always nice to hear what personal vehicles an "automotive authority" has in his garage. It says a lot about them. What they like and why they like it. And being given a glimpse of that with Gordon Murray is plainly awesome. And it was pretty cool to know that despite designing the best and fastest road cars ever made, it seems that he still believes that it's more fun to drive a slow car fast, that to drive a fast car slowly. Cheers Top Gear crew! Awesome video!
Colin Chapman and Gordon Murray would be best pals if they where in the same time as they are (was) so fixed on "adding lightness" Gordon has a little advantage with the materials that are available now but still a hell of a task with all the safety equipment. That a car the t50 is going to be.
Colin Chapman cajoled one of his Lotus drivers (Mario Andretti) to complain that Gordon Murray's Brabham BT-46 "fan-car" was throwing stones and debris out of the back of the car - getting the BT-46 banned (unfairly) because Lotus and the other teams couldn't compete with it.
The T50S has almost the same power to weight ratio (close to 0.83 HP/kg) as a Koenigsegg One : 1 on regular pump gas (0.85 HP/kg) not including the driver. So Cosworth almost matched all that Turbo boost by spinning the engine 50% faster with ram induction! God this will be seriously quick.
People were quick to underestimate the t50 and t50s because "oh it doesn't have 900bhp, " oh its a manual gearbox why isnt it dual clutch" yet what people dont realise is this. if the ariel atom v8 is quick at 500kg and 500bhp watch how quick the t50 and t50s will be some context of how much lighter the t50s is than most super/hyper cars today. Chiron=1.9tonnes(1900kg) Noble m600=1.25tonnes(1250kg) Pagani huayra=1.35tonnes the bc and imola may be lighter(1350kg) Even the 765lt is around 1.3tonnes and the t50 is under a tonne or (986kg) t50s is less than 900, so it will be pretty fast no doubt about that.
40:00 made me giggle, Lotus "lost the plot". Just shows you how high this man's standards are when it comes to driver focused cars. Can't help think that Jack feels a little out of his depth but who wouldn't.
I like Gordons dual approach and mindset. From the start the F1 T50 and this track car are intentionally designed as well as he thinks. I’ve seen hours of him speak and didn’t even know who he was until recently, but the F1 was the only car poster I bought as a child. It makes sense his class style mindset winning racing car design business acumen engineering and execution/delivery marketing communication respect level and personal style is top shelf. Word
TBH I think he would fit in a Lotus Elise with the seat all the way back and steering wheel spacer. He fits in an Elan and they are even tighter. The main thing people struggle with is getting over the chunky sills, but once you learn the technique it's easy. There are videos on youtube of people taller than him getting in one.
i had no idea he worked on the slr. one of my favorite cars. its pretty weird how he's worked on a lot of my favorite machines only to realize later that he designed them. i guess he didn't actually design the slr's body, but still interesting that he worked on it. what an awesome interview and tour. from the brabham bt 52, mp4/4, fan car, f1 mclaren, slr, lcc rocket, now the t50, t50s. he's done so many interesting things. its not just one focus of luxury or out performance, but just a guy that makes what he wants, and has been very fortunate to be in the right places at the right times. motoring wouldn't be the same without his influence, and philosophies.

Saving weight you say, seen what Christian von Koenigsegg done with their cars? ;)
@@grantchallinor5263 very interesting factoid, thank you
I love hearing him talk about cars. Whether it's his latest design or one of his vintage lightweights he has such an interesting perspective.
Chiron=1.9tonnes(1900kg)
Noble m600=1.25tonnes(1250kg)
Pagani huayra=1.35tonnes the bc and imola may be lighter(1350kg)
Even the 765lt is around 1.3tonnes and the t50 is under a tonne or (986kg) t50s is less than 900, so it will be pretty fast no doubt about that.
@@carsforlife1334 You know how fast a Moto GP bike is right? They would pull to 400 like nothing with one more gear.
Noticed the Smart Roadster in the garage!
We used to modify these and get great performance and a fantastic soundtrack.
Really enjoyed this, thanks.
Word
I feel his pain. Me being 6’5 it’s tough getting small cars
Try any TVR!
Koenigsegg Gemera : Hi...
@@BlatentlyFakeName They tried. He couldn't.
i had no idea he worked on the slr. one of my favorite cars. its pretty weird how he's worked on a lot of my favorite machines only to realize later that he designed them. i guess he didn't actually design the slr's body, but still interesting that he worked on it. what an awesome interview and tour. from the brabham bt 52, mp4/4, fan car, f1 mclaren, slr, lcc rocket, now the t50, t50s. he's done so many interesting things. its not just one focus of luxury or out performance, but just a guy that makes what he wants, and has been very fortunate to be in the right places at the right times. motoring wouldn't be the same without his influence, and philosophies.
its awesome he gets to recreate his F1 masterpiece ... I bet daVinci would have loved to recreate the Mona Lisa
This video was an absolute joy to watch. Gordon is the best
This is the type of film that belongs in the national archives.
I'm one to piss and moan about how much I miss the old Top Gear but I must say that this is among my favorite episodes of all time.
Possibly the best video on YT I've ever seen.
James May and Gordon Murray talking about cars, aerodynamics and mechanical workings could be a marvellous show.
That hour went by in what felt like 5-10 minutes
Thanks a lot. A 2 hours interview wouldn't have been a problem!
