Mat Brunet, thank you for telling Richard's complete life story with The Thief and the Cobbler. If he watched all five parts of this video, he would die happy knowing his story is all told and his life is complete, proud of the legacy an ambitious tale like this will leave behind.

This is one of the sadest tales in the history of Hollywood.
I hope Richard is happy right now in heaven and is satisfied for the legacy his passion project and his career have left in film history.

And thus ends another chapter in his Animation Lookback. Unlikely as that is (because of everything that happened before Dick got kicked out of his own project), I still have my hopes that maybe one day, The Thief and The Cobbler could be finished as Richard wanted it to be. But until then we have this lesson to abide by, that it’s never easy to make a great animated movie.

Your next Animation Lookback should be dedicated to Max and Dave Fleischer (Of Fleischer Studios fame). Who were pioneers during the early days of animation. They are responsible for the popularity of Betty Boop and Popeye and we're once rivals with the Walt Disney Company before Looney Tunes came along. Max is responsible for the first animated adaptation of Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer and Fleischer Studios was the second American animation studio to create a feature film with Gulliver's Travels.

Sadly, Richard Williams died in August of 2019. I was first introduced to the Thief and the Cobbler when I was 5 and we rented it from a local Blockbuster. To me, it was a ripoff of Aladdin (1992), but after reading so much of Williams' project, he was trying to make his dream come true. Now I believe that his passion project will always be remembered, hopefully for the next 100 years.

This is the age of the fan. Amateur animators should set in and volunteer to finish it for him before he dies. All the story boarded scenes and color in the pencil tests. It can all be done on computers much more cheaply than to put pencil to paper and paint brush to acetate. And I'm sure he would not mind that it was all shared and completed digitally as long as he can see that people wanted to help him complete the greatest animated film in history.

EDIT: Oooo interesting! I think a good pattern would be to do a remake of an old animation Lookback (Disney,DreamWorks,Pixar) and then do a new one, then another remake, then a new one, and so on. The Disney and DreamWorks ones aren’t very detailed, and although the Pixar one is a lot better and has a lot more facts, there has been so much that happened since then and it would be interesting to see an update.

Williams didn't work on storyboards until 25+ years into making the Thief and the Cobbler and was generally a terribly disorganized production. Do you seriously believe he would actually have notes on a movie he was expecting not to complete in his lifetime?
Richard Williams is not a "story" guy, he spent most of Thief and the Cobbler's production animated cool and complex motions and scenes over having a coherent plot.

Richard Williams was very talented but also fucking crazy. Proof is many of the deleted scenes from Thief. Like the Warmachine scene....nuff said.
