  • Welcome to the start of a few 'Quick Ride Reviews' or QRRs. Also called 'View from the cockpit'
    Not supposed to be definitive or complete but more a view and quick opinion that may encourage you to take a test drive yourself? Probably all be BMWs as the 'Good Lads and Lasses' at North Oxford Motorrad in Wolvercote, Oxford seem to like loaning me them!
    As always, comments always welcome as are 'thumbs-up' and subscribers.

    Great review Nick. I have a 2021 Bumblebee and opted to have the standard GS screen as opposed to the small tinted screen. Also the Yellow Riders seat did not appeal (It will discolour in time) so went for Black. The USB up front is a nice feature and not forgetting the DIN socket which now is sited on the left between the rider and pillion. I do like the heated seat on mornings when it's a bit nippy round the ol' normans !! oh, and the Hill Hold feature is nice.

    • @nickhodgeUK
      @nickhodgeUK  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Steve. I always forget Hill Hold as it’s been on all three of my GSs’ but it’s a handy feature. I don’t use it all the time but at lights for a rest from riding position I flick it on to drop both arms and feet down and bike doesn’t roll around and also of course when it’s a real steep slope and you may need ‘help’. Ride safe on the beaut 👍🏻

    Hi nick, nice video, like you i am so fed up with the connectivity issues that i am considering abandoning all connections except nav 6 to helmet for spoken directions, connectivity is a bigger issue than it should be and has diverted my attention from the riding pleasure and safety i.e the primary functions, i followed your connectivity tips to the letter and its better but still drops in and out, i look forward to your new video on the topic and relegating connectivity from a foreground issue to a background assurance.

    Nick, I would like to see your 58L top case on the GSA with the Bumot panniers. I'm looking to do the same and wanted to see what your thoughts were? Thanks you for being so patient and explaining your upgrades. It's so helpful!

    • @nickhodgeUK
      @nickhodgeUK  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi William. I’ve not used the 58L but I have fitted it and here’s the rub. If you fit the 58L you cannot open the Bumot panniers by a few millimetres??? Here’s your options. 1) unlock the pannier you want to open, tip it off it’s top mounting (it hinges on the bottom mount so no weight or removal) and it’ll open. 2) Raise the Givi Top box plate by putting 5mm spacers under each. This raises it enough to clear the lids. The swapping of boxes needs the 8 bolts of the Bumot top box plate removing. And 8 bolts of the Givi plate attaching (as the side stays of the Givi can stay fitted with the Bumot plate fitted). It is a BIG box though and for me looks too big 👍🏻

I get over 60 mpg out of my 1250gste .....marvellous. Heated seats errrrrrr no thanks. I fitted the nippy Norman cool seat cover which I have found to be a worthwhile extra, more comfortable on longer journeys and less sweaty undercarriage 😀 Will they ever sort this software for the tft.....I’ve been for 2 upgrades so far. A premium brand like BMW and they still have absolutely miserable horn on these beauties, no backlit handlebar switches for night riding and still a manual windscreen. These bikes see more super slab riding than off road. BMW should consider offering these features in the Option 719 or separate option(s). Otherwise I did mention these are beauties and the engine sublime. Ride safe and ride often.

    • @nickhodgeUK
      @nickhodgeUK  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had a better horn for sure on my 1975 Yamaha FSI-E. the soundbomb was the first thing I fitted. It sound loud enough static but try it at 50mph and the engine is louder. A blip on my soundbomb on the motorway to a car changing lanes has them flicking the steering wheel in a panic inwards!! I agree about GS use, mines a prime example, but it is equally adept there and Land Rovers also roam the tarmac. 👍🏻

  • @richardd9976
    @richardd9976 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thanks for the review. Your comparison with the GSA is valuable. The trade-off between additional wind protection/range and agility/weight is an individual choice, I guess, but I'm happy with my GS. As for the new features, I agree the position lights in the indicators is a good addition and the adaptive headlight is probably useful for those who ride a lot at night. The heated seat is not something I would use, and I wonder if there's a place to plug in the optimate now the USB is fitted as standard?

    • @nickhodgeUK
      @nickhodgeUK  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Richard. I didn’t see anywhere for the optimate but of course you can switch it to normal use (as I’ve done) and connect the patch lead to the battery to plug in and out. 👍🏻

    Great review Nick, don't know if this helps but I find that if I don't use my 2019 GS TE for a period of about 9 days or more the battery must lose some power and it seems to forget the phone connection meaning I have to go into settings to re-set. The bike still starts on the button but maybe there's something in power saving that means connections disappear first when the battery is lower than a certain percentage? It's just my uneducated guess!

    • @nickhodgeUK
      @nickhodgeUK  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Huw. I’m not sure. It’s frustrating for sure but the pairings should write to KAM (Keep Alive Memory) that should make them persist. The good thing is eventually you become very adept at re-pairing 🤣🤣 it’s sill an issue to date with iPhones with android being much better at holding them but the connection misses some features. I’m testing an android at the minute and it’s FAR more reliable 👍🏻

      Too bad Nick. I was hoping to fix that as well as getting the GS. TFT closer to that of the RT

    • @nickhodgeUK
      @nickhodgeUK  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      James. I’ve borrowed an Android phone and that is fine, so no matter your settings, it an issue restricted to iPhone for sure. I’m not sure what more they can do with the hardware as the RT is a huge screen giving it the ‘split screen’ functionality. Be aware at the minute nothing is sweetness and light with that either. It uses a combination of Bluetooth and bike specific WiFi and it appears the issue they are having is the WiFi dropping during a phone call interrupting certainly the ‘richness’ of the nav. I think it leaves turn-by-turn but takes out auto-zoom and such. There are cries to use Apple CarPlay or similar android but they are not really suited to motorcycling (gloves, non-touch, etc), so that’s admirable but in my opinion some of this is getting worse and the developers paint over it or go silent. Somehow it needs to work or they need to be specific with ‘not compatible with iPhones’

    Hi Nick, thanks for the video; the anniversary colour scheme just doesn't do it for me, but it would be boring if we all liked the same thing. Some of the improvements you highlighted are useful, if a little late; the RT has had five settings for the heated grips for years and controlled by the wheel, whereas the GS/GSA only ever had nuclear or lukewarm! The new indicators are a good idea, but I don't see the point of the nodding headlight as you would normally not actually see it as you start up. Thanks also for reminding me to book my bike in for a TFT upgrade; did it work? Cheers, Andy

    • @nickhodgeUK
      @nickhodgeUK  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Andy. I think I thought the same of the ‘hello headlight’ 🤣. The TFT issue for me no longer surrounds Phone/Media but totally the TFT to connected app for Nav as I’d prefer to use that than the Nav6 which is not a good product. Unfortunately, that connection remains very unreliable.

    Big fan of the 40th Anniversary Edition and currently waiting for my local dealership to get one uncrated and out on the showroom floor! What I've found here in the U.S. is that the GS models show up with whatever the factory feels like putting on them. That even appears to be the case as well, with the model in this video, which should have a yellow screen and yellow rallye seat. They often don't charge extra for some of those items, unless I suspect, you order the bike specifically how you'd like it. So there's my dilemma! Do I compromise for what the dealership has.....or order exactly what I want? I'm blessed to have such problems that IS for certain.

    • @nickhodgeUK
      @nickhodgeUK  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. I asked about those two exact points. The heated seat option here is only available in black and it appears the Rallye ‘plank’ seat is also replaced with two black ones if you take the heated seat option and the yellow tinted screen is not yet available and they’re not sure it will be. There are laws in the UK that may get triggered too. I’m not sure. Certainly you cannot legally ride a bike with other than a clear visor (technically 🤣)

      Hi Ian. It’s tough as I have zero experience in the triumph but for sure the GS/GSA are incredible all round bikes (hence the sales). I’ve loved all mine. The GS is a little shorter and more nimble. Not least that it has 10litres of fuel less than the adventure. I can be sure of one thing, it won’t disappoint. I know people riding GS’s who didn’t want to like them but ended up buying them. Go to you dealer and take both out for a couple of hours each. I’d take the GS first and then the Adventure. Hi Mark. In reality there are two variants. An ‘R1250GS’ and an ‘R1250GS Adventure’. Within that (In UK and Europe for sure), they group common ‘feature packs’ that are most often purchased under the ‘TE’ signification. The LC to which you refer is ‘Liquid Cooled’ which is when the engine changed from Air-Cooled in 2014. Generally the ‘TE’ variant delivers some popular options at a better price than adding them separately and obviously too help the factory with manufacturing. Hope that helps? 👍🏻

    I think it’s an absolutely terrible idea to have the front indicators and rear red break light permanently on. Used to be illegal in the old days, current regs ambiguous, govt not inclined to take automotive manufacturers to court. If you wish to be seen, fit additional lighting such as Denali. Heated seat should be standard, probably costs a couple of pounds at the manufacturing stage. BMW must be making a fortune in their bike division at the prices they charge, although sterling seems to be significantly depreciated since Cameron proposed brexit referendum hence subsequent price hikes.

      Hi Jean Jacques. As you’ll know I’m keen on anything that just gets you seen and I’m lit up like a Christmas tree. I’m not quite so critical of cost as there is a lot of ‘behind the scenes’ tech but you could argue is it needed for sure. Now if they could get the Bluetooth in the TFT working with my iPhone 🤣🤣.

      @@nickhodgeUK I know you are extremely safety conscious and bikes need to be seen, the Denali Christmas Tree appearance will assist in your safety. It is amazing that bikes which were once regarded as a poor man’s form of transport are now exorbitant to purchase and run. I have a 520 car, recently had first MOT, annual service and vat at purchase dealer£135.00 inc. Snows Portsmouth. Bike service £300, insurance for new GSA is three times the insurance of the car yet less than half the value of car. I know it is “perceived” risk. Anyway I can’t take the money with me, so instead of giving it to the family, I’m giving it to BMW while alive. By the way, I’ve visited BMW in Berlin, Munich and Dingolfing, bikes and cars costs are more than the sum of their parts! Still think permanently on indicators are a really bad idea! I would have them switched off. I understand there is an update for tft which deals with iPhone connectivity problems, but you will probably have to wait until next service. Keep safe on and off the road.

    Why didn’t they make the indicator lights white when been used as daytime running lights and then orange when flashing like they do on cars. A few reports of cars pulling out on these bikes thinking they were turning

    • @nickhodgeUK

    HOWWW MUCCCCH😂 21.5K English pounds is just too much for a GS (IMO). Makes my 2020 1250GS TE Exclusive seem an absolute bargain. I agree with you, I wouldn't use most of the "extras" either, nor do I like the colour scheme. I quite like the Ralleye but can't abide spoked wheels and the faffage that goes with trying to keep them clean which was why I got the notso Exclusive. that’s interesting, i used to have a similar problem with the connected app on my iphone 11pro running software 14.3 but now i go to ‘settings’... privacy’... ‘location services’... and then make sure the connected app ‘location access’ is set to ‘ALWAYS’
      i don’t switch my shoei (neotec 2) on until i’ve carried out the above and then lastly switching on my partners shoei.
      this allows us to listen to music together but unable to converse.
      i have to do this each weekend (or when the bikes been stood for a few days) but generally i would say it works fine for the the entire weekend albeit the odd gremlin .
      i’m not using a nav 5or 6 btw as i find the connected app more than adequate.

    • @nickhodgeUK
      @nickhodgeUK  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bazz8938 are you using the connected app mounted on your bike or the connected app running the Nav function in the TFT??? That’s the bit I can’t get to work. I have the app on ‘always on’ and ‘precise location’ and don’t switch the phone off when I store it (pocket or tank bag) but it still drops that connection regularly. The phone/music connection is fine(ish) it’s just the app to the TFT 👍🏻

    • @bazz8938
      @bazz8938 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i dont have the nav 5 or 6 as i removed the nav bracket when i bought the bike..
      i run the connected app from my iphone 11pro which i carry in my pocket but find (at least for me) it works best if i connect it as per my above post.
      whenever its had the odd gremlin i’ve simply switched off bluetooth on my phone, deleted all connections on the tft and then re-connected them to the tft in the sequence above ie..
      phone
      rider helmet
      passenger helmet
      .. switching each device on as i connect them.
      i don’t connect helmet to helmet (like i used to) so i’m actually connecting each device to the tft only.
      once all connections are made i generally don’t have to reconnect all day, they just pick up a few minutes after i restart the bike.
      i find generally it works seamlessly, allowing me to listen to any song, switch to ‘connectnected’ nav or phone call.. although the calls can be a tad quiet.
      i must add that i have to pre program and save the destination on the ‘connected app’ on my phone as i’m unable to program the destination through the tft whilst riding but generally i’m delighted with with the tft and app connectivity.
