  • Good evening
    It's a scandal!!! I hoped to bring you a review and comparison of my GS Adventure with an RT I borrowed while mine was looked at for connectivity issues. I rode it, reviewed it and on the day I edited it (a week or so after), BMW brought out a new RT!!!
    Much of what I waffled about still holds though and I added a first look at the new on for a minute or so at the end.
    Hope you enjoy it
    Ride safe
    Nick

    Good review, and the larger RT windscreen also works even better, basically enclosing you inside a nice protected little 'cocoon' while riding. Kick in the heated seat and grips, and it's remarkably comfy, even in very 'brisk' weather.

    Good video Nick, well worth watching 👍
    I thought my experiences might be of some interest to prospective owners.
    I’ve owned 3 x 1200 GSs (not GSAs), the most recent being a 2013 water cooled version. I loved them all, each one was markedly better than its predecessor. Sadly 45 years of riding and a physical job have all taken their toll and my wrists, ears and backside let me know about it!
    My local BMW dealer let me have an RT demonstrator for 3 days. That absolutely sold the RT for me.
    By comparison to the GS four things stood out on the RT. I found that the handlebar shape is really wrist friendly, the wind noise is noticeably less (and the quiet screen position is easily found), the saddle is way more comfortable and the stretch to the ground is much easier for my short-arse body! In addition the heated seat is WONDERFUL, the luggage is superb (but not as clever as the Vario system) and the dynamics are amazingly good for something that looks like a barge but definitely isn’t. I’m now on my second RT and my latest 1250 has the fully auto suspension system and that works really well. At 11 stone I have found pretty much every bike I’ve owned to be too stiffly sprung for my comfort. This RT though feels almost like a Cadillac, it glides along with minimal shocks getting through to hands or bum and yet when you turn the wick up the suspension cranks up too and everything remains remarkably under control.
    Whilst my “young” head would still love another GS my “slightly older” body is not at all unhappy with an RT. I would recommend anyone to give an RT a good test ride before rejecting the notion of owning one.

    • @nickhodgeUK
      @nickhodgeUK  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for that Derek. I agree. The fashion/draw of a GS tends to unfairly leave the RT in its shadow. We’ll agree to disagree on the seat but agree totally on the rest. Ride safe 👍🏻

      Not too sure how to put a new 'message' on here. Interestingly I ordered an LED option headlight - guess what my R1250RT turned up with halogen lamps!!! (that was in October 2020). The dealer said he had never seen one with an LED headlight but the option was on his screen in the show room as having been selected for my bike. Really annoyed about that and then, yes, guess what, BMW bring out a 1250 RT with a new LED headlight assembly!!!!! Getting Cyclops LED replacements.

    Thanks for the review. I have a 2010 R1200RTP and a Triumph Tiger Explorer 1200. While the RT is a wonderful bike, with great weather protection...I still prefer the ergonomics of the Explorer (GSstyle) because the knee angle is much closer to the 90 degree ideal and your back is more upright too, making for comfortable riding. The adventure bikes also allow you to stand up and stretch more easily. To be fair, the adventure bikes only come close to an RT when fitted with handguards and a touring windscreen. With those two provisos met, the adventure bikes are more comfy in my opinion, even doing road touring. Also, the adventure bikes have longer suspension travel...a big plus on bumpy roads.

      Hi Lorne. Don’t think I can disagree with any of that. Rarely am I anywhere near off-road but I remember one day in Scotland I was glad not to have a sports bike or tourer. Not that it was easy on the GS but standing and letting the bike manoeuvre beneath me was preferable 👍🏻

    Nice video review. Have never ridden one but would like to take one out for a demo one of these days. The electronic luggage locks is a nice feature, as is the power wind screen. • @nickhodgeUK
      @nickhodgeUK  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is VERY good on highway (K1600 I tried) as you’re in a calm bubble, but you need to turn it down in town. I think the new one does away with the speakers???? Nice video as always. A+ on your proper use of adverbs! :-). Even educated people in the U.S. seem to get them wrong a lot. I've noticed bikers don't seem to acknowledge one another when they ride by. Is that the norm where you live? In Michigan, you can ride almost anything with a motor in it and get a slight wave.

    • @nickhodgeUK
      @nickhodgeUK  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mark. Thanks for the comment. I’ve done OK in life through an ability to waffle I think, so glad I use adverbs correctly, it’s not intentional 🤣. We do actually acknowledge but it seldom a wave. This is because we ride on the left and waving would be with the right (throttle) hand and the bike would roll off. Generally it’s a slope of the head or sometimes a hanging leg. When filming I tend. It to as it’s distracting for the viewer to tip my head right with the camera on the helmet but it IS a thing here (so have a reticence to acknowledge GS riders, I know not why, but that can be a thing) ride safe 👍🏻

    Hi Nick, excellent review. I had my GSA in for a service yesterday and took out the 1250RT for a 3 hour demo. My first impression was how small it felt but as you said I could plant my feet down flat on both sides (I’m 5’ 11”) I’ll) which is always good. My leg position however on the pegs felt really cramped compared to what I’m used to on the GSA, this took a few miles to get used to and I ended up with pain in my upper thighs with having to lift my legs higher. On reflection I should have tried to raise the seat which my have helped. I liked the view of the dashboard with the analog clocks, very tidy. I too agree that the heated seat option is not important to me because as you again said even on the coldest days I’ve never suffered from a cold backside. The steering was different, it seemed to fall into the bends nicely and slow manoeuvres were maybe slightly easier than my GSA. Anyway the strange thing is that after about 2 hours I started to gel with the RT and engaged with her and ended up really liking the machine. I’d like to ask your subscribers if anyone has fitted the footrest lowering kit to the RT and how they found it etc.

    Couple of comments to add-up:
    - as mentioned in previous comment, final drive gear radio (swing arm), final drive ratio is different GS/RT. Gearbox per se is the same. So on roads, GSx will require a lot more shifting /RT. Even more with 1250 and extra torque. The shorter GSx ratio is meant for off-road needs indeed. A nuisance if you only travel on tar,
    - noise wise, the Akra exhaust the key contributor. Is you like silence & your neighbors, don’t go for Akra. GSA comes std with it, which explains why noisier than GS. Engine covering only comes second RT/GS/GSA. When you open the throttle, RT valves will open up, you’ll still enjoy the roar…
    - heated seats and handle grips: it is white to push the level up to start with for it to thermalise all rapidly (it takes forever if not), then to take the setting down as soon as you feel the heat wave arriving. I do ride sub zero temps, all five levels useful once at equilibrium. My whife loves the heated seat, triggered more often than I do. Note that in severe cold (

    • @nickhodgeUK
      @nickhodgeUK  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi David. May be. I’m not sure though. They did change the chain from standard to toothed type for the shift cam. That may make more noise??? The shift cam shouldn’t as that only changes the lift. The clearance remains the same and the can just slides in and out at certain revs so not doing it too regularly. There is a definite phenomenon of left cylinder rattle that seems to vary. I’ve not peered long enough in to the engine to be able to decide myself. I only got a brief view. Without question ‘thinning’ the emissions is unlikely to make an engine quieter and the 1250 engine is at least Euro 4 compliant and rumour has it that was always Euro 5 as the new GSs are with no apparent power, engine or exhaust change although we don’t know for sure. Weakening the mixture can make the engine knock. Mine is much smoother on cruise for example with premium unleaded. Interesting debate 👍🏻

    The sound system is not that usefull imho. Plus you would get the ugliest aerial ever in the 2020 model. the 2021 model has it hidden (aleluia?!) :)
    On the top box, other lovely feature is the internal light, and the bottom mat ;) Annoying is you need to take the pillion sit to remove the connector if you want to take the top box out.

Its low seat height is a big plus for many of us shorter in the leg - can't say that about any adventure bike. The RT is a far more fun bike than you make out as well it is not just a mile muncher, I guess this conclusion is drawn as much as anything from its perceived nature rather than what it can actually do.

      Thanks for the comment David. I think my view was patently a comparison with the GS but in closing I think I made it clear this was a very accomplished machine. Granted I had no passenger and certainly in the boxer line up top for passenger comfort. Again the armchair on the K1600 and certainly the ‘wing’ would likely be above it. The K1600 is the only one I’ve rode and the mounting height is similar and certainly a negative with the GS. For me it’s too low which diminishes my like of ‘road presence’ I am hoping to ride the 2021 bike soon and the adaptive cruise control and improved TFT/Nav will I believe enhance a very good motorcycle still further. Just hope Euro5 doesn’t take anything away as I felt power delivery on this one was excellent 👍🏻

    What I hate about my GS compared to my K1600 is that as soon as I’m going fast enough to want to put the screen up, I’m going too fast to be able to put it up due to wind resistance. Not only that, but I need to loosen the reinforcements first. Very annoying.

    I wonder Nick what you would have thought of the RT 's normal standard front screen for weather and wind and noise protection on the bike, instead of the "sport" issue screen?? which I think is pointless.
    If anyone riding a bike didn't want touring bike type protection, I would suggest is on the wrong kind of bike. Why not get a different bike?.....The RT is a specialist touring bike! it doesn't propose to be any other kind of bike. A bit expensive for one to buy this bike and then "busy themselves" trying to convert this bike into a bike more akin to some half faired naked bike, for those hot summer days whilst riding.
    Buy a different bike, these RT's are "touring Kings" quite obviously and bloody expensive! for being that and specially designed. That sport screen, in my view, is a waste on this type of bike and,...why?? Don't buy an RT........Having said that it truly is up to each and every rider to choose for themselves how it should go for them in what bike and type they see themselves having.

Or, if you had to ride one of the bikes flat out (well as fast as you dare) from Nice to London only stopping for petrol which one would you choose? Issues like these are the fundamentals not the knob v switch for the bloody screen or how warm your ass is on the heated seat. And answers to questions like these will not be found by following cars along suburban or semi-rural roads at 45 mph. The Missenden Flyer doesn't take his GS off road because he hasn't recovered from the mental scarring of falling off it .......in a car park. It was never meant to be a full review of the RT. I had it overnight while the GS was in for repair. Most seemed to have liked it, although not liking it is an equally valid opinion. Like many social media commenters there are comments in generality about people they actually don’t know. I started riding in 1975, worked 8 years as a motorcycle mechanic. Like you I've come through about 45 years of bikes and experienced many of their strengths and shortcomings. I watched your video because for the last five years I've ridden an R1200R. It's light, has gyroscopic handling and is rock steady at 130 mph (on track days, officer). However, I don't commute anymore and I'm getting old (60) and would appreciate a bit more wind protection on long rides. I'm thinking about swapping to either a GS or an RT. But I still want a bike which will handle extremely well - on the ragged edge if necessary. I watched your 26-minute video in its entirety but it did not really answer my question. I'm a similar height to you, long legs, so bike height is not an issue. Which one would you get if you were in my position? Regarding my future content. @Trailing Arm my particular expertise was the chain tensioners on CX500 v-twins which required engine removal to replace. 1.5 hours start to finish. Actually often the chain tensioning was ok. Much of the rattle was caused particularly on 4-cylinder machines by out of balance carbs. Balance those with vacuum gauges (particularly the CB400F) and rattles often went away.
      Back to GS/RT. I was impressed with the RT it handled well as do most boxer engine bikes actually as the excessive weight they have is very low. I love the road presence of the GS (or even more so the GSA) as it is a much ‘taller’ bike and that’s a big thing for me. However I would say for handling the 10L less tank size on the GS makes it more ‘flickable’ that the GSA. All things considered I’d go for a standard GS for your list. I like the GSA as I’m not so needing to have my knee down, love the extra range, improved weather protection and size. However there was nothing wrong with my GS either. I loved that bike. You WILL notice a difference between the 1200/1250 in acceleration, smoothness and overall ‘behaviour’, barring the gearing if you find yourself in 2nd/3rd at very slow speeds. That’s the only area I’d be critical of the GS/Boxer/Gearing. All that said, I approach 62 and as my left knee gets worse, the RT becomes more attractive as a bike with many of the good solid features of the GS but with a very feet planted feeling. Go ride both. I think you’ll be surprised 👍🏻
