I'm on dog # 3 now. My first german shepherd only lived to be 7. She had a large mass on her spleen. 2nd German shepherd pup i only owned for 5 short weeks before she had a serious emergency she collapsed and discovered she was born with a heart valve conditon. Now my 3rd pup another german shepherd arrives right after Christmas, and with each dog, i gain more experience and will feed Farmina and raw. Cant wait to get my garden going again come spring to give her organic health foods. I'm going to give filtered water too. I dont trust tap water. I think I would get a mixed breed. purebreds have too many bred in problems.
@davidgray1515 that's true but I love my German Shepherds. My new pups parents are healthy and I actually got to meet them and see their health records on their hip elbows. The last pup I didn't get to meet the mom who was supposedly on the premises but I got to hear her growling 😮 had bad vibes from early on with that whole situation and I was sadly right. Had to be a puppy mill.
@@allsmiles2938 the worst thing that could happen to a breed is for it to get popular. German shepherds are so popular and there are a bunch of very poorly bred shepherds out there right now. It's very sad.
@@nogames8982 I hate seeing how german shepherds are being bred with extremely sloped backs. I've seen ones that look like they struggle to walk because their back legs are so malformed, but that's basically the AKC standard, for their backs to slope and their back legs to be bent and angled backwards. It's wild. The breed used to be super athletic and powerful (and some working lineages still are). But the show dog lineages are just sad.
I highly recommend getting a water distiller it'll be much cheaper for you in the long run.
Rachel, you are a treasure trove of information which will help me be the best pet parent I can be to Gibbs, my rescue Boxer-Pit! He is adorable, but most importantly he has saved my husband’s life. My husband suffers with chronic depression. He has been working at home now 3.5 years..alone, isolated, anxiety ridden, but as he grew worse ( the worst of our 43 years together) the ONLY bright spot was his relationship with our then 1 year old rescue who adored him❤️. Gibbs needed exercise, play time, food and hubby was the only one here everyday! He had to move, go outside, fresh air, sunshine FOR Gibbs. They are the best of buds so now Gibbs has separation anxiety when hubby goes out. I know that Gibbs has improved hubby’s quality of life!! I will do anything to give Gibbs his best life❤️❤️Thanks for educating my journey

I agree with you that dogs need fresh foods in their diet, which include protein, healthy fats, as well as certain veggies and fruit, however, the mainstay of their diet needs to be protein and organ meat. That bowl that you prepared has way more fruit and veggies than protein. Feeding a dog a diet that is predominantly fruit and veggies with only a small amount of protein puts them on a path to pancreatitis. Their bodies are not built to break down large amounts of veggies and fruit. In the wild, they would only consume those things in the stomachs of their prey, which is a very minimal amount.
Much like you ,I feed my dog freeze dried raw as well as fresh bland home cooked meat as well as veggies, fruit , green lipped mussels for healthy fats and sometimes a little goat milk yogurt. I do however, make sure that fruit, veggies and yogurt only make up about 20% of my dog's diet.
Pumpkin, all different colored veg, milk thistle, mushrooms, sunflower seed oil, gizards, pineapple, spirulina, phytoplankton, fermented wheat grass, cooked salmon, olive oil.

What about broccoli sprouts? My dogs LOVE sprouts. Not too many, but a pinch of broccoli sprouts are my Boston's fave.

When adding raw chicken feet do you give a probiotic to keep from stomach distress if they have never had chicken feet? I can get chicken feet from a butcher so no problem getting them just don’t want to have a stomach problem. How often do they need the chicken feet for their teeth once a week or more? We have 4 golden doodles and breed them

Hey Rachel, I really liked that maev raw dog food. I am going to start feeding it to my dog, and I wanted to ask you, would you recommend still adding moisture to that? Even though I am not worried about hydration because my dog drinks lots of water.
I'm a brand new dog owner and I feed my dog a combination of kibble, wet food and fresh fruit and veg. My question is: do dogs prefer to have everything mushed together or do they like separate bits i.e. plain kibble, vegetable mash, bits of chicken or fish, wet food, etc. I can't work out if I should be feeding just a big bowl of all the good stuff mixed together. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hello Rachel... I started rehydrate my dog kibbles with Oat Milk cut with warm water... it helps give him less kibbles at once hoping he will loose weight.
Oat milk is full of gums and chemicals. Its terrible for humans and pets. Bone broth and coconut water is much better.
My dog hates the Crumps dental chews but loves whimzes! I am going to try the air dried chicken feet. They cost a fortune though.
I tried to give my dog healthy chews and she refuses all of them. My dog is just not a chewer. I feed her a diet consisting of rotating between dr Harvey’s paradigm and small batch freeze dried. As for treats I give her homemade freezer treats. Made from recipes like number one breath a tablespoon of yogurt, a handful of spinach a handful of mint, a handful of parsley and some water line the bottom of the tray with some melted coconut oil let that stand, and then top it with the breath mixture mentioned above others, include pumpkin, goat milk, and Dr. Harvey’s runs be done and prebiotic for digestive health and for urinary health, a freezer treat made with bone broth a handful of Cranberries and strawberries.
So would you give them a chicken foot everyday? Or part of the foot? Trying to replace the greenie👍🏾✌🏾

You're reply would mean the world to me thank you so much again ❤ he's a samoyed Alaskan malamute he's 10 year old but everyone thinks he's a big 2 year old dog. He's in perfect shape and walks 5 miles daily with no effort so that's why I make sure he gets plenty of protein but if that's to much please let me know 🙏

Great information on healthy whole foods for our furry family members! My integrative vet says it's better to feed vegetables and fruit that are pulverized in a blender or pressure cooker so it's more digestible (like the predigested contents of the stomach of the animals they would eat in the wild ). The one thing I am stressing about is his dental health. The doc wants him to go under for a deep cleaning and I am terrified. I know it has to be done, but I am so scared.

You can absolutely give dogs cooked eggs! My vet recommends it. It’s good for brain health, a shiny and healthy coat and so much more. One of my little man’s favorite treats are poached or scrambled egg. (Can also give a raw egg, but the thought of that kind of scares me-salmonella and whatnot)

What if your dog hates fruit an veggies? Mine will actually pick out any fruit or veg i will put in her bowl and put it on a neat little pile next to her bowl before eating the rest of her meal. It is a great party trick, but i do worry about giving her all the nutrients she needs..
Dogs don’t need anything besides meat,with some organs occasionally. They can be perfectly healthy without fruits and vegetables. They know instinctively what they need.
Hi Rachel😊 I have a senior dog with severe arthritis in his back legs. I have tried everything and he is now on arthritis medication that are having terrible side effects. Is there anything besides cbd and glucosamine and chondroitin supplements that you would recommend? Thanks!
MSM…I give my 14yr old , 20lb, shih tzu 1/4 of my doctor’s best msm 1000mg capsule daily.. i take 4 caps of it for arthritis/joint pain and it helps me drastically so does my my 82 yr old mother.👍🏻
My dog is almost 14 now (he's a GSD mixed breed). Besides CBD oil he gets also Boswellia/Curcumin by Organika daily. He gets other supplements for different reasons as well. Most pain meds are aweful with lots of side effects. Since he's prone to seizures I found the only pain med for him is Galliprant which hasn't had a bad side effect so far. To counteract the liver damage from pain meds he also gets SamE supplement. I don't give glucosamine etc or MSM, I've read somewher years ago that they are not as good as they say.
My Dae loves eggs, guacamole, bananas, watermelon, beef, chicken, beef. I feed her with me if it's kosher. Her kibble and fresh pet last along time. ❤🎉
My dog won’t eat wet kibble or actual wet food so it’s harder to incorporate more liquid in his diet. Any suggestions?
I have a 7 yo springer who LOVES raw zucchini. At one time he weighed 78 lbs! Our vet advised us to get the weight down and told us to use HS weight management. He’s done very well on that for over 2 years and is now down to 60 lbs. However he’s still on the chunky side and I haven’t been successful at getting him thinner. I make homemade dog food but I’ve changed the recipe many times. There’s so many opinions out there. Is rice ok or not? Is sweet potato ok? It goes on and on. I can’t afford the higher priced freeze dried foods and since I’m retired I have the time to cook fresh meals. So now that there’s issues with dog foods, and HS is on that list, I’m worried. HS is the only food I’ve found that has under 300 calories per cup. My homemade food is around 280 calories per cup. I weigh and measure everything I give him. He’s just a little couch potato what can I say? My question is about zucchini. It’s not on your list of ok foods to feed but my vet says it’s healthy and he loves it. I use it for treats. He loves broccoli, green beans, carrots, spinach, zucchini, all of these I use in my homemade recipe. I also add chicken hearts and ground turkey. He’s doing very well on that. Sometimes I add a can of sardines to the mix. Am I on the right track?

I asked Rachel a question about carbs like potatoes that’s in the food she recommends and I like that, but does anybody else on this list know anything about carbs for our dogs? For my dogs, they’re great! As long as they’re responsibly sourced & limited ingredients. The ones I use are only natural ingredients so as my dogs chew them , the saliva softens it & they’re highly digestible

Not bones but ligaments. I bake mine before I give it to my small dog and he loves it. It's just crunchy.

Good morning this was a wonderful TH-cam and I looked into this food. It appears to be very good because I like that it has some carbonate. She said they have potatoes in it and I always worry about my food which I do feed a raw diet but I always try to add in a little Rice or quinoa or something because I feel as though the dogs need that because of the heart problems that was going around and they’re still not sure why that happened but it scares me to feed a grain free diet even though it is raw and he does wonderful on it but your food has potato in it which is yay. Yay yay for me, but it’s just way too expensive so I’m gonna stick with what I’m using which I love and add in some quinoa or potatoes now that I see it’s in your food all this was lovely. Thank you very much. I’m so happy you can get to feed your two or three dogs this wonderful food but not everybody has the moneyto feed even one dog on this diet
I absolutely cook more for my dogs than I do for my self. I can cook really well I just don’t enjoy doing it for myself. It always just seems like work. But when it comes to preparing food for my dogs that is somehow different.

@carrierichardson6619 my vet advised against raw food but I know it's good for them, so she will receive raw at times. He suggested I put her on their food they recommend and I know that's not good for her so I will keep her on Farmina.

I know you have to limit dogs' intake of cruciferous veggies because it can be hard on their stomachs, but my dog LOVES broccoli, almost as much as she loves meat, so I share small bits with her whenever I eat it. She goes nuts for it. She also loves halloween because she gets to eat small bits of the pumpkin from carving jackolanterns. I really should be buying pumpkin for her more often, since it's really good for dogs and she loves it.
On a different note: Organic foods aren't better. There's no agreed upon definition of what "organic" means. The label is more of a marketing gimmick than a useful piece of information. There are often multiple certification organizations in each country, and oversight of organic certified farms is pretty lax in most places, so two different "organic" products can have vastly different planting, growing, and harvesting practices, even if they're the same type of product.
There is nutritionally NO difference between organic and non-organic fruits and vegetables. Nutritionally speaking, broccoli is broccoli, bananas are bananas. You're getting the same stuff from each regardless of how it's labeled.
Organic products aren't necessarily safer. You should wash all produce, but it's especially important to wash organic produce VERY well. Some organic fertilizers and pesticides can be problematic or outright dangerous and don't break down over time or wash off easily, so you can't trust that they're "clean enough" from cleaning and packaging processes, or from a little rinsey rinse under your sink faucet. Example: copper and sulfur, which aren't inherently dangerous (many fruits and veggies contain those chemicals naturally) but in large quantities they can cause health issues. Getting extra from unwashed food is potentially dangerous. Another example: many organic farms use untreated manure as fertilizer, which increases contamination from e. coli and salmonella.
It's not more environmentally friendly either. Organic pesticides are often less effective, and therefore require higher quantities at higher frequencies, with products that can have a higher environmental impact, than synthetic products that have been specially tailored to make their effects more specific to the target pest and less dangerous to environment or human health.
Organic foods aren't necessarily bad. I'm personally indifferent as to which I buy. Availability, price, and freshness are all more important factors for me than whether or not it is (or isn't) organic, and I buy organic options when they meet my needs. But you can't assume foods are better or safer just because they have an organic label. You can have an organic farm that coats their crops in harmful "natural" pesticides twice per month and a non-organic farm that barely, if at all, uses pesticides. You can have an organic farm that manages pests and other environmental risks with native predator species, crop mixing, and crop rotation, and a non-organic farm that liberally sprays pesticides that are questionable and may be banned in the near future. Some organic farms are amazing, some are terrible. Some non-organic farms are amazing, some are terrible. The point is, the organic label tells you very little, and I get frustrated when influencers tell people they should be spending more for a label that doesn't actually mean anything.
My dog wil not eat strawberries, let alone fruit!

Cucumbers, blueberries and green beans but those arent as healthy so I dont do many. Cant keep her out of the potato patch either, but dont want her eating potato seeds or green ones.

Are you aware that strawberries are the most laden with pesticides/ herbicide on the market. Try Avacado and pineapple.
not organic. you must buy organic from a reputable, pref farm sourced.
I thought avocado was a no for dogs.
