Down here in Texas, ranchers have been using used motor oil and diesel mix to seal fence posts for 100+ years. In the old days, they'd use keroseneYou just paint the post, let it dry, repaint if you want, let it dry, and then sink the post. There are posts that have lasted decades with this method.

never have nothing"Im no expert but I've never seen any dead shrubs around the fence or grass.20 euro for 5 litres of ducks back paint.Waste oil the car gets the benefit and saves more tress being chopped down to replace rotten fencing/shipping/fitting/power tools/time etc etc.

But one shouldn’t say it out loud to much cause the environment people might be after us. Hehe.

Ive used the motor oil/diesel mix on my deck. Its a hard tropical timber called VITEX. Beautiful result, however i used new motoroil, not used oil. Am not a fan of that greyish, dirty colour the used oil produces. (Depends of course just how dirty the oil is). Clean oil mixed 50/50 with diesel produced the natural warm colour i wanted

Just be careful, when atomized with a sprayer the oil is easier to ignite even thought the oil itself in a pan is not normally flamable. All those droplets from the sprayer have a very large surface to allow vaporization, and oil vapors are flamable.

Good evening Sir, any oil is good against insects, water etc,,, the bad stuff about using used engine ( MOTOR ) oil is the post combustion products and it compare the PCB's contaminant. The other problems is the soap that used to clean the engine in the motor oil get wash off and goes into ground and if you have a water well,,, you are asking for problems of water contamination. If you want to use safer oil is used or new Hydraulic oil, it will never dry, never get wash off, so no ground contamination and the best it is not PCB's post combustion dangerous products. I have more than 40 yrs of doing it, My father was using it and all the wood barn's are still up !!! I recently use it for making my permanent house deck and I used it also for covering all my wooden house with it ( many videos about it ) So Sir, that was my little Canadian 10 cents about that subject 🧐👌👍 and I'm not too brain da da damage from it 😮🤣🤭👌👍 Cheers

Good evening Dave! Appreciate the feedback and i was aware and totally agree. I am not concerned for my water due to the small amount applied on the deck (but yes every year it would add up), I will only do barn once and there is no rain AND the fact that my artesian well is very far. Regardless I do not want to pollute so thanks for the great thoughts! This was actually a mix of used motor, hydraulic and transmission oil. Now that i have a tractor ill have much more hydraulic oil and will try to only use that. Still beats the junk they sell and is worthless AND toxic to produce, ship and use👍👌✊

Hey guys, Theo first off thanks for the idea, and RCA thanks for info about using hydraulic oil. Does the wood stay oily though, does it leave a residue? I agree that the store-bought crap is, well, crap. Transparent stain doesn't hold past 1 year, and semitransparent is peeling off within 2 years. Diesel is only to thin the oil, get it to soak into wood faster and it will evaporate over couple days so only motor oil remains in wood. Motor oil flash point is high and not considered flammable. Somewhere I read to also add bit of borax in mixture, it should stop mold, fungus and insects, don't know exact mixing ratios.

The environmental question is a big one I'm trying to answer. There's so much that goes into it.
This is a form of recycling that appears to be far more efficient and less impactful than other forms of recycling. In addition, it is localized; meaning that additional waste from logistical movement is not spent. Oil does degrade faster than synthetic plastics which is confusing because they're made out of the same stuff as far as I understand. It is also cheap or even free resulting in less work for said resource unless economic impact on the environment from this reduced work. Improves the lifespan when compared to bare wood resulting in less wood waste and longer structural integrity.
In contrast though, dangerous heavy metals, variance amongst oils, questionable biodegradability, risk of contaminating groundwater, unclear evidence of dispersed use being environmentally safe, and unclear lifespan for this use case before safe degradation can occur. Does it have negative health impacts to humans occupying and interacting with these oil finished structures?
Also, there's a number of other factors that play into this. Are new paints and finishes environmentally safer? It's a good question because we don't know as average consumers what's in these paints. Are they any more biodegradable? Do they contain microplastics? How much economic work is required to produce these paints and what is the environmental cost? How much longer does wood last with off-the-shelf paint in comparison to used oil finishes? How reusable is the wood if the structure is dismantled?
If oil is unethical to use as a wood finish in terms of its environmental impact, how is this use case any more unethical than the staggering amount of oil spilled every year from vehicles during their use case?
If anyone has an opinion or more info on this please let me know the internet is not giving very clear answers.

You can use oil on cedar. No issues. I do indoor eastern red cedar logs for wall trim and use tung oil as the finish. Color comes out a beautiful light brownish/yellowish on sap wood and deep red on heart. I hate thick clear poly on cedar that makes it shiny. Looks like a plastic covered couch to me. Best to try it on a spare cedar pickett to see if you like it. If you don't have every species of wood with every sample of stain in your garage, you're doing it wrong haha.
