I like how to this man takes the time to properly preserve a wood fence for the next generation when it will likely long outlive him.
Wish I'd done this to my fence instead of using that expensive, toxic stuff that doesn't do what it says on the tin.

I also use engine oil as a wood preserver but I would just like to warn people that used engine oil is both carcinogenic and highly toxic. It causes skin irritation and complaints including dermatitis. I would strongly advocate the use of nitrile rubber gloves when using it to avoid any contact with skin especially is working with it regularly.

Big Ian Builds please tell me, how is the smell of the reused oil applied on the wood after a while ?
Also, is it still toxic after applying on the wood ? (By touching the wood or breathing next to it)
      Thank you

Did you see how old that gentleman was? He has been living with oil and using it for various things. Hate to say this, but you'll never reach his age! With the chemicals used nowadays! The chemical now will kill you faster than oil will ever do. Oil comes from the ground, and oil returns back, and the cycle starts all over again.

What an excellent use for old engine oil, rather than have it questionably recycled buy vehicle dealers. Once soaked into the wood it cannot possibly harm the environment. Unlike the manufacture of wood preserving chemicals purchased at DIY stores.

When I built my shed I treated the underside of the plywood floor with engine oil. Its on a cement pad and 6 inches off the ground but I wanted it protected from winter snow and moisture and I had some used oil so it was an easy solution. Just rolled it on with an old paint roller.

I also use engine oil as a wood preservative and it does gives excellent results, but I agree with some of the comments below. It is carcinogenic and garage mechanics who do oil changes have to wear protective rubber gloves. I've have also occasionally used engine oil as a weed killer, so it does definitely harm plants.

Whist I admire the economy and environmental aspects of re-using old oil I truly hate that horrible black, dense colour !How could you treat that lovely new fence with this act of utter vandalism? You have ruined it in my eyes.Gently aged, giving a rustic, silvery hue,and probably given an eco treatment would have looked so much better. And attempting to put plants next to such toxic substances shows little knowledge of gardening.I have seen this done in large farm situations in the UK,and it done sometimes in the USA on wooden trailers for heavy, dirty use,and it works well. But to use it in an English suburban garden is to say the least, misguided.
