  • Here is an inexpensive, simple and easy method for preserving exterior wood like fencings, trailer decks, outbuildings, etc.
    Using recycled motor oil, diesel and a few items from your garage you can add years to your exterior wood for much less than you would normally spend on chemicals and stains from your big box stores.

    People please, this method of spraying oil along with diesel on fencing, barns, sheds are not harmful to the environment. Nor is it going to bust into flames. If it were so there would be no good farm land to plant. Nor would there be any underground water that we could drink from wells. This method of spraying has been used by farmers for many, many years on miles and miles of fenced fields, as well on their barns, sheds. It is a ( HELL ) of a lot safer than that being applied to our food being grow in these large fields today. And that being made in any laboratory today, that will be sprayed to control pests in those same fields. So just take a breath and step back and relax. It's alright. Now you all have a great day, or night. God Bless.

    If you drill a hole in your air sprayer and put a valve stem in for a car you can hook it directly to your air compressor and set the regulator to 30 PSI and go all day

    Being raised on the farm I noticed a practice some of the oldtimers had was spreading oil around the foundation of out buildings and down roadways to keep the weeds and dust down, problem was when they stopped, the weeds would grow to tree like proportions in the rich black soil.
    I won't argue with the fact that there are chemicals added to the oil to ensure proper viscosity and trace metals from engine wear, but store bought stain, paints, cleaners and the packaging they are packed in have a much larger chemical and carbon footprint.
    We mixed our used oil with diesel, gas, varsol etc. Today I use mineral spirits and used gas engine oil at 2/3 min spirit 1/3 5w20 used oil for a nice light brown color on my fence and deck applied with a garden sprayer.
    Using straight oil on a truck or trailer deck can tend to make the wood a bit punky or soft over time, I find that using gas, varsol or paint thinner allows it to soak in but will dry tack free quicker to make it a bit more user friendly, mineral spirits just emit less smell. As a side note, oil by itself is a fertilizer, decomposed organic material.

    I just put the used oil in a pail, take my old wide paintbrush, and swab it on thick. I apply at least 3 coats over a few summers. All end grain, especially post tops, should get many coats.
    Your fence looks good, better with the darker color.
    You mentioned people putting bad substances on/in the soil. Many people hate the good looking dandelions in their yard. So they spend their money and spray poison on the dandy lions. The poison makes them sick, so they go to the medicine man for more dangerous chemicals, and actually put them into their bodies. What they didn't know is, those good looking plants are an excellent blood purifier, and could have cleansed them of the consequences of their actions. And the entire plant is edible and nutritious. Oh, and a pail is a bucket up north here. Be blessed.

      Do you advise new homebuilders to spray the insides of their sills and beams around the base of the house as its being built since that is the first place termites come in contact with the wood framing. I have treated a two by four with straight motor oil as a stain and a preservative and wonder how long that board would last if I buried it in the ground. I have soaked my decking in my utility trailer with a couble of gallons of oil and the wood looks smashing.

      It’s probably not legal. But I drilled holes and saturated the lower plate of my garage walls. About 30 years ago. It stopped deterioration, termites etc.
      oil eventually washes away. So for the frame of my deck I used an oil based primer. Then painted it. Oil based works better. Though not as environmentally friendly.

    I soaked my 12X6 Trailer deck with straight up used motor oil back in 2017 and I had installed a new floor two years before that and the wood had dried out and was starting to crack. Flash forward to now my floor is still doing great. I used a a roller and that floor inhaled that oil like a crack head.

    The issue of used motor oil vs. new motor oil is: 1. Used will give you a darker finish, and 2. Used my clog your spray nozzel. It's important to note that this spray will go everywhere, so be prepared to kill some nearby plants, stain nearby structures and make a mess. Personally, I roll my fence with used motor oil. Get the thickest nap roller you can find and a mini roller. Cut the roller cover down with a hacksaw and place it on the mini roller. I mixed one five quart bottle of used motor oil and five gallons of kerosene in a five gallon bucket. Put the roller pan in a carboard box to reduce drips on your lawn and garden. It also keeps you from stepping in it and filling your sneaker with kero and motor oil like I did. Roll the fence, then come back with a brush and finish the tight spots. Yes, spraying is a quicker application but a much longer clean up. It's also a lot more messy and you don't get the ability to really load down the roller and soak the top and base of each post where you really need a lot of oil. Another advantage of rolling is you can call it quits and just cover your gear without any clean up. This is important for big jobs.

      I drive 7200 miles a month on a pharmacy route. So I get at least an oil change a month. I put that on my 10 foot trailer everytime. Its not slick at all, and it looks beautiful. I will say it may take it a day or 2 to soak in. Warmer days it soaks faster.

    I can't seem to find a sprayer that won't break down the components with diesel running through it. At least most say just for water based products or similar insecticides etc. Did you get a special sprayer, or go with a cheapish one knowing it will probably have to be thrown away once the fence was complete?

    • @American-OutdoorsNet
      @American-OutdoorsNet  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, I have two sprayers that are dedicated for oil use only. If and when they begin to fail, they will be thrown out. So far, after several years, I haven't had any issues. Had a few clogs in the beginning that were corrected by filtering and using the proper mixture. Too thick of a mixture and the sprayer just won't function effectively.

  • @channelview8854
    @channelview8854 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Used oil is a known carcinogen. So wear the gloves. Nitrile is preferred. That's what mechanics wear. Also, I'm guessing that hydraulic oil is better at preserving wood. I think most it has chemicals for antimicrobial purpose.
    I have also been thinking that dissolving some paraffin in the mix would make it more effective. Another thing that would probably be even better but uglier would be dissolve some roofing tar in the mix. Might have to heat either of those to expedite the process.

      It will stain you if you only have the wood covered with the used motor oil. I painted used motor oil on my outdoor wooden workbenches and then gave it 1 coat of "Thompson's WaterSeal" (Waterproofer plus tinted wood stain). It allows me to touch and use the workbenches without any stains, and the sealer also blocks / cuts down the smell of the motor oil. 😀

    Some might say it is environmentally bad to spray diesel fuel and used motor oil on anything outdoors. Then, they go buy a nice stain from Home Dopey and spray their fence. So while their *oil based stain* and the big hole in their pockets makes them happy, they could have had just as nice of a finished product, more money left in their pockets and no more of an environmental hazard than what you did.
