    Annular cutters cut from the inside out which is why the cutting fluid system is designed to put fluid inside. The center pin locates the hole, blocks fluid flow until it is pushed against the surface, meters the fluid flow while cutting, ejects the slug and it blocks the fluid flow when the slug is ejected.

    Hi Matty. I recently bought the cheaper vevor sdt md40 mag drill, and also felt the revs were too high for the larger cutters. I ended up running a cheap potentiometer to let me reduce the rpm. The chuck also had visible runout. But overall happy with it. Great video as usual. Regards Rick.

    Hi mate! Thats a good review you did, love it how you go straight to the point without any dramas. I liked how you checked the runout with a dial indicator, never thought to do that on a mag drill. I have used big metabo mag drills in the past alot of times, and they chewed a 32mm hole through 20mm plate without a question. Have also used them to do 10mm holes on a vertical box section on a potato harvester. Just as you pointed out, take your time and go easy on her, its not a race. Plus, a generous amount of lube. Although, I’d go for a variable speed control machine, so you can alter the cutting speed.
    Cheers mate!

  • @TheBuildist

    The terrible runout is due to the bearings. I bought a Vevor mag drill in December, which I tore apart because it had TERRIBLE runout. Almost an 1/8 inch of runout! So I tore it apart, thinking the quill shaft had to be bent, and that I would straighten it. But once I got it apart, which was very difficult, I had to drill out a square key that had been peened in place, I found that the shaft was perfect. (.001 total runout) So I ordered new (NSK brand) bearings that the shaft rides in, a small upper and a larger lower. I received the bearings last week and installed them yesterday. It looks way better to the naked eye, put the indicator on it, and it now has .007 total runout. PLENTY good enough for an annular cutter. So FYI: it's the cheap Chinese bearings causing the horrible runout.

    • @TheBuildist
      @TheBuildist 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well I don't think it's rare. That wasn't my review on Amazon. But I saw that review. And I saw the review done by Howie's machine shop TH-cam channel. So everyone I saw review it saw that the spindle had significant run out. So I bought it fully expecting to have run out problems. And it didn't disappoint there! Like an eighth of an inch. If it had only been a 16th of an inch I'd have just used it as it was.

    I've been thinking about getting one of these seen a couple reviews where people complain about the drill chuck having to much run out and taking up to much space one thing I plan to do when I get one is if you need to accurately hold twist drills or even taps or endmills etc if you need a flat bottom hole or to work on a broken bolt etc is you could make a small er 16 or larger if needed holder with a weldon shank that way you can hold just about anything you need besides just annular cutters obviously you can't mill but you could use an endmill to plunge mill slots make flat holes work on broken bolts etc and can get small collet sets cheap enough now that should be plenty accurate enough to hold things for a mag drill 👍👍👍

      @@MattysWorkshop no problem I bought a small set of er 16 collets to hold taps in a holder a friend gave me and most of them can hold a couple different drills only drawback is they stop just under 1/2 but annular cutters I think come a couple sizes under 1/2 now and since the biggest problem I've seen folks complain about with a standard chuck is the mag isn't tall enough for anything but smaller sizes or stubby drills but since the annular shank is 3/4 you should be able to bore out the center to slide drills up through the center so you could make the holder shorter for more clearance 👍👍👍

    It appears that the arbor isn't true in that chuck. Does the chuck have a threaded arbor or a tapered arbor. It will be interesting to see if Vevor will replace the arbor or perhaps you could machine a new one or rework that one. You could put the largest piece of drill rod that would fit in the chuck to hold it in the lathe to turn the arbor. Perhaps weld it up so you could turn it to the correct size and it wouldn't have as much runout.

    Not bad. I’d prefer a variable speed model. Even Jacobs plain bearing drill chucks are rated for 0.003” concentricity. So while this one is pretty bad, you’re not going to get a chuck to 0.0005”. Even their ball bearing models are rated at 0.0016”. Drill chucks aren’t precision drilling devices. And yes, that doesn’t excuse this one.

    I have a different brand mag drill and I think you’re taking it too easy on it it seems counterintuitive but I found that it cuts better and doesn’t damage anything if you really work it hard I basically try to cut holes as fast as it can I can’t stall the motor and there seems to be no damage done to the cutters. The only time I’ve broken a cutter is if I don’t have the magnet stuck good. So I know it feels wrong but try to apply more pressure with those big cutters and you’ll have better luck or I have at least.

The Drill Chuck is obviously eccentric from it's shank. Chuck up a piece of stock in a Lathe. Turn a Jacobs Taper. It will be running dead true. Put your Drill Chuck on the taper and clock it. Jim
