  • The InterCity 225 is a UK high speed electric train, consisting of a Class 91 electric locomotive, nine Mark 4 carriages and a Driving Van Trailer (DVT). The Class 91 locomotives were built by BREL at Crewe works, and have a top speed of 140mph; however the top line speed on the East Coast Mainline is 125mph.
    Here is a selection of clips I have of the InterCity 225s at speed in locations such as: Grantham, Newark Northgate, Northallerton, Darlington, Durham, Chester-le-Street, Alnmouth for Alnwick, Berwick-upon-Tweed & Prestonpans.
    All trains in this video are running at speeds between 50mph & 125mph.

    These are iconic East Coast flyers! I hope Virgin realise how good they are and keep a lot of them in service.

      The reliability of the 91s isn't fantastic, they are old pieces of kit. Nevertheless I like em and don't want to see them scrapped, anyway Virgin will be retaining some and using them on shorter rakes of mark 4s.

      The 91s have been flogged to death.

    I think the HST 225 sets would make a great high speed sleeper trains.

      They would if they operated in continental Europe.

      You’d have to modify or build new mk4 carriages for the services but apart from that, sounds great

    Nice way to start off the video, showing the modern flying Scotsman thundering past

    Nice shots, I like that view across the viaduct.
    I hear these are to be replaced by class 801 EMUs in a few years time :-(
    Hopefully they aren't as stuffy and cramped as a pendolino....but I doubt they will match the graceful quiet and airy interior feel of the mk4 sets. Will be sad to see them go I must say. The end of an era.

      soundseeker63 Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed. And I agree, will be sad to see them go.. but we've still got a few years to go yet :)

      Not all of them will be going. In fact Transport for Wales and West coast mainline grand Central are having a couple with class 90s and class 67s.

    Great video. Well done. It will not be long until you will be filming trains run by Stagecoach/Virgin at Railway Stations from 1 March.

      ECMLexpress Pleasure. Travel on the ECML while its still comfortable. The WCML is awful with those queasy tilting monstrosities.

      "Rabbit Hutch" is also a nickname for the blunt ended cab coaches of the West German "Silberling" rake. There are also round/edgy ended cab coaches.

      Because in Britain they are obssessed with sealed short length so called trains. Half the stock being replaced now is far from life expired. Look at the 442s for example.

    I assume that the two trains passing through Darlington are the Flying Scotsman on two different mornings? Don't all the other passenger services stop at Darlington?

    • @ECMLexpress
      @ECMLexpress  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      gerontius34 they were both on the same day, and weren’t the flying Scotsman service. they were additional Edinburgh-Kings cross services.

    • @gerontius34
      @gerontius34 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the reply! Is it common for additional services to be added? A casual check of the Edinburgh/Newcastle-King's Cross service on the National Rail Enquiries web site showed all trains stopping at Darlington with the one exception noted. Just curious... :) :)

    Is the ECML the fastest tack in UK?

    • @ECMLexpress
      @ECMLexpress  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      breeze 147 Most mainline tracks run at the same top speed of 125mph e.g. (WCML, Midland mainline etc) 🙂

    • @soundseeker63
      @soundseeker63 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      High Speed One (HS1) is, 186mph, although that is a modern, specially constructed line not connected with any others.

      The 373 is the fastest. The 225s are also quite fast
