Classical music is often referred to as the universal language, and for good reason. Its emotive power transcends linguistic and cultural barriers, communicating directly with the human spirit. Whether you're in a concert hall in Vienna, a living room in Tokyo, or a cafe in New York, the language of classical music speaks to people from all walks of life, fostering a sense of unity and shared human experience.
Bach was an inventor, he was open minded and did welcome any improvements on musical instruments and new inventions. I am sure he would adore the Grand. Schiff gives us his outmost personal interpretation - in the moment, he nows the music, it's in his heart and soul, he doesn't need to read it. Bach lives.
Been a big fan of Bach's music for a very long time, and this one has to be one of my favourites. He was a blessed person in a formidable sense. Thank you!
Hmmm... I distinctly remember an interview with a (much older) Andras Schiff who said, unequivocally, that he NEVER uses pedal when playing Bach 0:38. Of course, being the Master, he can do what he wants. His interpretations are absolutely brilliant, and I honestly cannot understand how everything is live, everything is memorized, everything is played beautifully and I don't think he's ever made an error.
This is the first I have seen a video of a younger Schiff. I knew still photos of the young man and I know videos of the mature pianist. I have never been able to reconcile the two versions. Finally seeing a video of the younger artist I can immediately see it: the facial expressions are unmistakable.
I have heard a more recent version yesterday. The context of hall is different, in both cases. I like both versions very much, but I think I prefer this one too. I think this one is more fluid. But it can be caused by the fact that the other hall was having much more of echoe. The problem with that, is that you have to play more lightly for the people in the hall, but the microphones are placed nearer then the public.
Gould and Schiff do marvelous performances, Schiff preferring the faster style o& performance, both pianists showing great precision..... and then there is Lang Lang, who prefers a sloppy, stylized, unpredictable and inconsistent version of his own. It’s a pity this fabulously gifted pianist can’t maintain the disciplined concentration necessary to play Bach properly, although he seems to be getting steadily better as time goes on. However, for all we know, Bach might have enjoyed the looser style if he had been able to hear the miraculous sound of a modern piano. One can romanticize about the instruments of the past but if a non-Earthling were to be presented with a clavichord, a harpsichord, a 19th century piano and a modern concert piano, there’s surely no discussion about which would have won the choice.
And in more recent recordings of the Italian Concerto, I've seen he uses his rh to play the repeated Ds in the opening of the 2nd mvt, whereas here he just pedalled a little and used just lh
Compare the theme of the third movement to the Chorale Prelude in the Orgelbuchlein (BWV 615): 'In Dir ist Freude - In Thee is Joy.' I suspect there may be a little more of a spiritual underpinning to this "Italian" concerto.
Amused by the little comments of people that harshly , and anonymously criticizes a giant of music like András Schiff, as if they have the moral, musical, pianistic and intelectual stature to do so.
ali abrahimi If Bach had a sustain pedal you know darn well he would would have used it. I truly believe these composers were writing keyboard works thinking in orchestral terms
I always find that young Schiff is the better version. The older he gets, his mannerism becomes saccharine, his playing becomes more self-indulgent (comparing his first and more recent WTC), prioritizing himself & ego in front of the music (check his Goldberg in Albert Hall. Appaling rhythm swings), and his total denouncement of the pedals (however minimal) for Bach is unwise (Here, he's using plenty enough.)
He is just as indulgent here imo. He is too obsessed with his own articulations. I listen to Schiff for interesting articulations but I go somewhere else when I want to be immersed in the music. He has no understanding of how to develop energy at all. He disperses energy too much with his articulation choices (which are wonderful in many places but unnecessary in others) and the impression is the music never moves horizontally or reaches sufficient climax.
Daniel Wilkins false equivalency. Vaccines and airplanes are nothing like keyboard instruments and the need for them is totally different. Bach would likely not have used pedal for his music as the musical styles of the time necessitated it.
I find Schiff too delicate and pretty. There should, in my opinion, be really loud joyous moments...an elevator music version of Bach, nothing more...perhaps his style would be more suitable to Schubert walzes

He used pedal in Bach and came around using it now. Mid life crisis is probably over now thank god

Realy!!!
Bach's music helps me to fell better. Thanks for sharing.
Magnificent performance! Schiff shapes every phrase with subtlety and expressiveness, bringing out the depth and richness of this glorious piece.
Amo demais esse pianista!
Fantastic performance of the beautiful Adagissimo starting at 16:05. This is pure Bach magic, similar to the Dreistimmige Sinfonie in f minor BWV 795
Thank you Sir Andràs Schiff!
Semplice! Quests è the word.
Perfect, well paced, lyrical and soft. How on earth could Bach “hear” this?
Maybe it wasn't on Earth.

He said that stopped using the pedal on bach at certain time.
Superb! Especially in the Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue, which is not even mentioned in the title!!
Hermosa interpretacion lo admiro muchisimo.
Mesmerising. Such beauty defies speech.

Back when Schiff used pedal in Bach
Yes that's right but if you couldn't see it you 'd hardly notice.
@@ΑπστολίαΧατζησαρόγλου Indeed. He's a master.

He’s using pedal now albeit sparingly. Probably his midlife crisis is over
Andras!! With all that brown hair!! (6.29.20)
Of course I meant in the first movement...yump dah, da da da da da da da da da da, In Dir ist Freude...gosh

I am sorry. But you are a huge tool.
Sergio Valenzuela : Very well said. Wish I had said it! Needed saying.
Where can I get that huge Clavierwerke book from the beginning?
👏🥰🌹
imp no one writes better for left hand than Bach
This capriccio is wonderful
Is it originally written for piano (keyboard) ?
Clave
The title is absolutely mistaken.
Thank you for your comment. We corrected the mistake and changed the title. Enjoy the performances!
By the way, the last piece is the Cromatic Fantasy and Fugue BWV 903.
Yes, we know. It's in the description. It just don't fits all in the title field.
Agreed
Exquisitely played - they might have given him a tuned piano to play on though...
It's the upload. I have the DVD and the piano sounds fine.
Bach 🇩🇪🇩🇪🇩🇪
🤣🤣🤣
Glenn Gould
Noch sehr jung.
He is using so much pedal here.
It's for compensating for the lack of echoe in his hall. I do the same when necessary.
Anne-Marie Dubois no, he just preferred to use pedal at this point in his Bach interpretation

@@youre100right3 You're not necessarily right.
He's using pedal .....I thought he was very anti with Bach ....I suppose it softens the sound
To those who disliked this video, I pity you.
