How can art be so close to perfection? Bach himself would be surprised of the heights of his music played on a piano by Sir András. Thank you for this gift!
My favorite part is the final left hand karate chop of the Echo - the sheer power of that strike combined with its extreme clarity and economy of movement. He doesn’t raise his hand and come down, his hand just suddenly appears in that position on that key, it’s like the Bruce Lee one-inch punch.
When I suffered in my lifetime, I always found Bach. Among the great Bach’s pieces, this French style piece is the best ever I heared. Especially Sir Andras Schiff’s perfoming is not to mention.
The clarity of each voice, the phrasing, the technique, it is all more masterful than the vast majority of excellent pianists could hope to achieve. I have noticed that seasoned prodigies, i.e., older, musicians like Schiff, just keep getting better with age.
Alongside the Toccata of the E minor, This is the most moving, so deep in musicality and drama and overflowing with longing as if praying for something over and over. And Andras Schiff is out of this world making this unforgettable moment stay in our hearts. I must confess I got addicted with his playing that I cant stand listening to any other Bach player, even Perahia and Hewitt. His mastery of tone and touch, his intimate relationship to the music that is so unique, his voicing and orchestra-like texturing and his love for performance make him so transcendental. Thank you God for this gift to humanity. It always makes me humble and work so hard to make miracles happen.
It seems like Bach is speaking through Sir Andras.. Probably one of the best stylistic interpretators of Bach's music ever.. One big BRAVO for this genius playing!!
The audio on this recording is so beautiful. There is very little distortion, no clanginess in the upper keys, and a robustness in the lower notes. Bravo! To top it off with such a compelling and irresistible performance by Schiff is to achieve the very best of what youtube can offer.
Schiff has mastered Bach's entire output from the inventions all the way through the hardest toccatas and fugues. And yet he rarely ever mentions Glenn Gould! I've always found that interesting. He wanted his own approach to Bach and he's achieved it... while Gould has this perfectly mathematical playing where every note is precisely even and every voice precisely independent, Schiff has a more lyrical cantabile style. He really places a great deal of thought into the idea of "character" and the way different pianistic registers imply different orchestral instruments. I highly recommend his Beethoven sonata lectures!!!
I don't like his Bach at all, I respect him highly. I watched the first 3 English suites he did from memory. It just made me want to listen to Gould. In fact, I turned this off and went back to Gould. Gould plays the allegro much slower, you can hear everything and it is not blurred by pedal. I think Gould's playing has more character, each voice like an individual in a conversation, not blurred by pedal. And the sense of propulsion by keeping the tempo strict. I met him once in Berkeley years ago, he wasn't very nice.
Each era in classical music provides a unique perspective on the world and human emotions. Exploring and understanding the history of classical music offers insights into the culture and mindset of that period.
The uniqueness and extreme clarity of his playing is not due to the instrument but to the masterful way Schiff plays. He rarely uses the pedal while playing Bach, in contrast to virtually all other pianists. And this is the result. We are fortunate to live in a time were sound recordings can capture the sound with high fidelity, which was not the case during Gould’s time.
He plays it at a tempo for organ with the dynamic nuance of the piano and builds an incredibly rich interpretation that reveals something new with each hearing. A deep and extraordinary live performance. Thank you for sharing!
Exactly what I was thinking. It sounds almost like an orchestra. Each tutti is clearly recognizable. And it is played so rhythmically and lively - simply brilliant.
yeah it's a really special finale. It has this truly epic, valedictory quality to it. It's an inspired choice on Bach's part, and a definitive and wonderful performance on Schiff's. I love love love his karate chop for that final low B - the elegance, economy of movement, and powerfully focused sound strike me every time
This was the first piece of music by Bach that I learned when I was a teenager, and I recall that it was a joy to play. I remember very specifically that once I overcame the technical challenges, the performance just sort of happened on its own; that is, I exerted very little effort to make sure my fingers hit the correct keys. They just landed in the right place. I had a similar experience with a Chopin waltz, Op. 34 No. 2. Not sure I can describe it, other than to say, with great humility, that the look on Maestro Schiff's face as he floats through the arpeggiated right hand in the opening movement evoked strong feelings for me. Perhaps it would not be an exaggeration to say that the ease of motion is inherent in the composition itself -- another manifestation of the supreme greatness and utter brilliance of JS Bach.
Never mind all the ornamentation, french style of dotted rhthyms, working out of fingerings! It all flowed out of your little boy hands while the rest have to study, practice and pull out our hair to just count the beats in each bar! 😂
Splendid. Heart touching music, heart touching and brilliant performance, fine audio and video. Bach is... Bach. And Schiff is one of the few pianists I can pick to listen anytime, with no reservation.
Fantástico!!! Lo mejor de Bach y la maravillosa interpretación de Andras Schiff !!! Todo con un sonido impecable. Me ha emocionado y agradezco mucho el haber tenido la oportunidad de escucharlo.
I read he plays several WTCs before breakfast every day just to wake up musically, so to speak. As I continue my amateur's exploration of Bach on my modest upright at maybe 4 times/week if I'm lucky, and the WTCs in particular, I find I use the pedals less and less, and haven't really used them at all for Bach for the last several months or so now.
Saying one passage of Bach is most beautiful seems moot to me. I feel like his each piece and by extension his whole body of work should be taken as a whole, each part or piece does not intend to display a climax but each is another piece of the puzzle.
Para mi tambien su interpretacion no tiene comparacion. Quiza Yuja Wang seria capaz de llegar a su nivel, si se ocupara por mucho tiempo con J.S.Bach. She already performed a wonderful piece of J.S.Bach in a wonderful manner.
