- Between 1985 and 1990 in particular, the NES saw a golden age of dominance that allowed them to become the definitive console manufacturer of the era. Nintendo would go on to continue this success with the Super Nintendo in 1991, but for now let’s take a look back at 20 of the best NES games released during the iconic console’s lifespan.

THE BEST SNES GAMES: th-cam.com/video/0gvKNaI87pI/w-d-xo.html
CRYSTALIS AND IKARI WARRIORS
Best batman game before the 2000s? Man the SNES animated series batman and robin was much better.
You briefly showed sunsoft blaster master. It is by far the BEST game EVER for nes. You also failed to mention karnov, wizards and warriors. bro.. even top gun was better than the children's games you chose. Please remember that there were adults that liked the nes. We waited for the nes. To list a bunch of kids games as the best ever is absurd. We liked them of course yes. But the games you picked were not even close to the best.
Tecmo Super Bowl should be on this list. I’d bet dollars to donuts that more total hours have been played on that game than nearly every NES game made. Each game takes fifteen minutes, making each season about 4 hours, plus the infinite replayability of team after team
Yes! I wore that game out. I know for me this would be one i played probably more than anything else
Flying warriors was sick as well
One of the greatest sports games of ALL TIME! 🎉
Broncos suck
It's somehow better than Madden 23
Tiny Toons Adventures, TMNT Mahattan Project, Little Nemo, Zelda 2, man the list goes on.....hell, Rambo was one of my absolute favorite games!
Off the top of my head, no order-
TMNT, duck tales, Zelda, Mario bros 2, Mario bros 3, contra, super c, kid icarus, final fantasy, double dragon 2, rygar, Castlevania, Castlevania 3, Tysons punch out, Tetris, super Mario bros, TMNT the Manhattan project, felix the cat, Castlevania 2 Simon's quest, ghosts n goblins.
i concur
Some fun ones I played as a kid that aren't on this list:
1. Blaster Master. We kids had a video game time limit, so I'd get to stage 5 on this no-save game and hand it to my brother telling him, "Don't screw this up."
2. Battletoads. Hard but whimsical, fun music. And the 2-player mode was hilarious with the friendly fire.
3. Shadowgate. Creepy with good puzzles. Took a long time to beat.
4. Little Nemo the Dream Master. I still occasionally come back to this one. Unique platform level designs and theme.
5. Destiny of an Emperor. Now THAT was an RPG. Way more fun for 8-year-old me than Final Fantasy or Dragon Warrior.
6. Pro Wrestling. It was just fun.
7. Ghosts 'n' Goblins. So punishing.
8. Excitebike. 🎵 Bop bop bop ba-dop bop! Bop bop bop ba-dop bop! 🎵
9. Tombs & Treasure. This was a very immersive adventure with great music. Check out the end credits music, for example.
10. Desert Commander. Pretty fun top-down strategy game for its time.
Destiny was a glorious game!!!
Great pics with the OG Pro Wrestling and Excitebike!
Someone else who remembers Destiny of an Emperor! Sometimes I feel like I’m the only one who remembers it. It’s in my top two for the NES
@@jackiw7 I don't think I have ever ran across it in all my years... I will have to check it out immediately.
I was stunned Blaster Master wasn't on the list! Excellent sound track, variety of game play, and unique mechanics should have made it a winner. Shadowgate is also EXCELLENT.
Better list than the original
Some personal favorites not mentioned here: Double Dragon, Bionic Commando, River City Ransom, Solomon's Key, Faxanadu, Tecmo Bowl, and Cobra Triangle.
River city ransom 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Cobra Triangle was great.......until you died for the 110th time for something stupid lol
Dragon Warrior was my favorite game as a child.
My introduction into RPG’s, I love Dragon Warrior (Quest).
My personal list would also include Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, The Guardian Legend and Kickle Cubicle.
Guardian Legend is pretty neat, especially for combining two very unlike gameplay styles.
Guardian Legend was very under rated.
Guardian legend and metroid were my favs
Did you ever notice that in Zelda II, the entirety of the original Zelda's world map is in this tiny little section in the southwest of the map, south of Death Mountain. The position of Death Mountain in the north, the ocean to the south and east, that little inlet in the center. It's a perfect match.
The Guardian Legend and Blaster Master were the best at combining two different gameplay styles into a great game
No one asked so here's my top 20 NES games
1. Super Mario 3
2. Castlevania: Simon's Quest
3. Zelda (Second Quest)
4. Punch Out!
5. Rygar
6. Kirby Adventure
7. Super Mario 2
8. A Boy and His Blob
9. Star Tropics
10. Goonies
11. Double Dragon
12. Gun Smoke
13. Metroid
14. Megaman
15. Maniac Mansion
16. Uninvited
17. Metal Gear
18. Rush n' Attack
19. Faxanadu
20. Super Mario Bro.
Rygar might be my #1 NES game of all time. Out of every game I owned, that's probably the one I played the most. It's a game that doesn't get mentioned enough. Props to you for including it on your list.
Also, Super Metroid was the THIRD game in the Metroid franchise, not the direct sequel to Metroid. The second game was Metroid 2: Return of Samus on the Game Boy.
I'll never understand how these videos get made without correct information.
One game I loved that never gets mentioned is Little Nemo’s dream master
That‘s very true. Little Nemo was a very good game that is worth a bit more attention.
Same goes for Bucky O‘hare, Battle of Olympus and Maniac Mansion…
Yesss me too and totally rad silver surfer. Battle toads and Bucky o hare !!! !!! !!! And don't forget about bonks adventure PC engine and turbo graffix mascot for a little while!!!!
@@seanthegamer5552Silver Surfer music is lit. Sometimes I just listen to the music while doing other stuff. +1 for Battletoads and Nemo. Memorable childhood games.
@@davidripplinger8904 thank you for your insight that is what I do too
also one of the hardest games ive ever played. every stage after the train ramps up the difficulty accordingly. i couldnt ever gat past the house stage without a game genie.
I would have to say Metal Gear was my top game for the NES. It was great
I was STUNNED this wasn't on the list.
Same here. I spent many nights playing that. And all the other games for the PlayStation
The original from msx is better than the nes version.
Maniac Mansion was one of my favorite games growing up.
I always felt like I was playing a video game version of the burbs
Still is. ❤
Bionic Commando, Tecmo Super Bowl, World Cup Soccer, Double Dragon, River City Ransom
TMNT III: The Manhattan Project > TMNT II: The Arcade Game.
Wasn't bad! 😊
By a country mile.
@@Echo_Canine11
It was.
Both TMNT Arcade and Double Dragon are too big to be 8-bit games, they felt limited, watered down, and meant to be made for the SNES.
Big facts
The Legend of Zelda will always be MY personal favorite NES Classic
You could see it across the room....only gold cartridge 😉
Mine to. IMO one of the best games ever made for any system. Totally revolutionary for its time.
My personal favs are Code Name: Viper, Base Wars, Conquest of the Crystal Palace, Star Tropics, and Bionic Commando!!
Codename Viper is up there for me also. I can hear the background music now. The first stages music is still stupidly good.
Oh man, Base Wars was so fun!
I still enjoy Conquest. Really fun game, especially with the secrets.
So many great games on the NES. Faxanadu was one of my favorites!
The NES is the greatest 8 bit console of all time.
Great video. I grew up in this era and it was a magical time from which I have many found memories.
I got a NES in the summer of 1987 for my 11th birthday and spent a ton of time with most of these games. Metroid, Punch Out, Zelda1, and FF1 would be my personal favorites.
My under-the-radar pick from this system is Spelunker, a game that didn't have nearly the commercial success or popularity.
In case someone was interested in some other NES game recommendations, my Top-20 might be (in no order):
- Maniac Mansion
- Battle of Olympus
- Snake Rattle n Roll
- Punchout
- Super Mario Bros 3
- Super Mario Bros 2
- Burai Fighter
- Ghostbusters 2
- Hyper Soccer
- Super Spike Vball
- Contra
- TMNT 2
- Double Dragon II
- Ducktales
- Mega Man 2
- Crystalis
- Dr Mario
- Tetris
- Track n Field II
- Bucky O‘hare
Battle of Olympus is an underrated gem!
@@sk1ppman Battle of Olympus arguably THE hidden gem of the NES. My favorite adventure back then with Maniac Mansion. Zelda and alike did not even come close imo… 🆙
BATTLETOADS???
@@djmsong Only came across Battletoads once. None of my closer friends had this game. Tough one, but the graphics and animations were impressive… was a big fan of Rareware even back then. But i was more into Snake Rattle n Roll, California Games, RC Pro Am or Marble Madness.
Still, pretty legit suggestion from your side!
Ghost and Goblins would have made mine.
Good list. I think the biggest omissions are Zelda II, Tecmo Super Bowl, and Double Dragon II
Zelda 2 sucks!
@@joshcoughx respect the GOAT

BATTLETOADS???
Going back all these years later and playing SMB2, I think it's my favorite. It's so different and fun.
It's creepy.
@@joshcoughx that quick sand.....
No Bionic Commando? Excitebike? Skate or Die? Tecmo Super Bowl? Bueller? Bueller?
I just wanted to say that even though this is a list I've heard a thousand times, and features the same games that would be on anyone's list, I still found this video enjoyable. The information was presented in a fun way. I enjoyed that each game was presented briefly but had relevant information and gave me reasons beyond "I just like this" as to way I would want to check them out. Nothing felt missing. Maybe I argue with the order, but that feels so minor. If someone had never played NES in their life, I feel like this video would be a perfect place for them to start their journey. Well done. I can't express enough how much credit you should get for me watching something I feel like I've seen before. You really did present everything uniquely enough that the fact I probably wasn't going to personally learn anything didn't take the enjoyment away from watching. I don't know if I expressed that well, but to me that is basically a miracle.
this is the kind of feedback that will keep me going all week, thank you so much!
Great list. Two that may arguably belong: Crystalis (amazing adventure game that rivals Zelda in its depth) and R.C. Pro-Am (phenomenal racing game for the NES). Those would make my list.
I loved RC Pro Am
Crystalis was definitely a good one.
Hell yeah RC Pro-Am got to put Double Dragon 2 in there of course I think I would have done an honorable mention with Beetlejuice also
Nice work with these videos!
Mega Man 2 was the first game I ever got on NES. It took me forever to beat that game, and when I did my parents let me have a beer. I was 9. It was the best memory I will ever have.
I guess the biggest surprise on this list is Batman. Really good game by the way. Sunsoft did a great job with it. Maybe the only company who made good movie games as Gremlins 2 was another gem.
Batman played much like Ninja Gaiden but no where near the same difficulty.
The great thing about the NES is everyone who makes their list personal is going to have a different list. And the number of titles does not make it easy.
Favorites I probably would have included would be Double Dragon, Double Dragon II, Metroid, Battletoads, Snake Rattle and Roll, Shatterhand, Little Nemo, Metal Gear.
Anyone who played Castlevania 3 would probably have that high on their list. It was the game I played the most and one of the last NES games I bought in 1992 for $20.
Batman is one of my favorite games for the NES. I'm super happy that it got on this list. I remember playing it so much back in the day! I also liked Blaster Master, and Ironsword: Wizards and Warriors II.
How can Super techmo bowl, kid icaris, double dragon 2, and jackal not be on this list???
Kid Icarus, Rygar, Bionic Commando, T&C Surf Designs, Track & Field 2, RC Pro Am, Double Dribble, Paper Boy, Gradius, Wizards & Warriors 2, Legendary Wings, Kung Fu, and Ghosts N' Goblins would have been on my list. But, there were so many great games for the NES, it's hard to hate on any list.
T&C was a good game if you just wanted a quick run and fun.
Great list. A couple of my favorites are Crystalis and Super Dodge Ball, though I'd expect them to be low on a list like this. I agree that SMB3 and the original Zelda are the two best games on the system. Just incredible titles.
After seeing crystalis gameplay in the intro i was excited, but unfortunately it was just a tease. I put crystalis in my top 20 easily. Possibly top 10.
To many greats for just top 20 because everyones is going to be different. Zelda series,Final Fantasy,Metroid,Metal Gear,Bionic Cammando,Contra,Super Contra,Star Tropics,Crystalis,Dragon Warrior Series,Mario Bros. Sereies,Super Dogdeball,Super Spike V Ball,Nintendo World Cup,Blades of Steel,Tecmo Bowl,Mike Tysons Punchout,Double Dragon Series,Faxanadu,Battletoads and way to many more. Too many greats too list, loved my NES. Best Christmas present ever at age 6 in 1986.
Great list. I would've included Battletoads and SMB2 (Japan).
Battletoads!!!!!
Castlevania, Mega Man 3, and Ninja Gaiden 2 have always been my favorite, in part because of the music.
Overall a really good list. If I might suggest something, then I would recommend Dragon Warrior III and IV. The first entry is of course a classic that I personally still revisit to this day, but I feel like III and IV improved upon the formula by a lot. Especially III is such a masterpiece that offers a lot of replayability as well due to its job system.
And Dragon Warrior IV has a superb story system. Chapters I-IV have entirely new protagonist(s) and they all unite in Chapter 5 to face the ultimate evil. A very cool idea that was revolutionary at the time. The cast of characters were somewhat 3-Dimensional which was remarkable for NES and even many SNES titles.
Yeah which is weird considering it is one of the highest sales of the system.
Without Battletoads this list is a joke. No Double Dragon? River City Ransom? Personally I like Shadowgate better than Maniac Mansion.
So we get 3 Mario Games and 2 Mega Man games, but Metal Gear, Bionic Commando, Tecmo Bowl, and Blaster Master aren't on the list? At least you gave us one SunSoft game.
Good list and summaries! I'm particularly glad to see Konami so well represented here, and I can easily agree with your top 5s 👍
The Nintendo Entertainment System had so many wonderful games. I love that the NES has been affordable for the past few years compared other retro gaming consoles. Also the end with Shigeru Miyamoto was great. Imagine Shigeru Miyamoto coming out in a Nintendo Direct and offering to make a new F-Zero game that would be amazing. Cool video. ^_^
Very good list. But Tecmo Bowl / Tecmo Super Bowl, Shadow of the Ninja, Kung Fu, Jackal, Double Dragon II, and Zelda II deserve this list as well.
Especially Zelda II which every game duplicates as a side scrolling adventure game and a leveling system that was fun and customizable that to this day hasn’t been replicated.
K so you missed like all the great sports games like Super Dodge Ball, and Super Spike V-Ball. Besides all that you missed the greatest NES game of all time which is Bionic Commando. Also, this game has the best ending scene of all NES games. Punch-Out deserves a better rating. Even my wife thinks so.
Nah, the sports games were somewhat popular but nothing really sticks out. They may have been your favorites but not in the mainstream
For me DD2 should be in it!
Number one for me even. Played it so much with my dad back then, only to be followed up by the Streets of Rage games. We played 'em all.
Shocked Blaster Master isn’t on this
Or Metal Gear!
I liked Jaws, Punisher, California games, Narc, yo noid, POW, TC surf design too
Your top three is perfect, but your omission of any sports games is glaring. RBI baseball? Tecmo Bowl? 10 Yard Fight? Bases Loaded? You’re British. Fine. How about Star Tropics? Ice Climber?
Cool.. I have all of these still, except final fantasy and dragon warrior. I've never been much of an RPG fan. I would add Snake Rattle N Roll, and Little Nemo Dream Master instead 😁 19:03
I still play Nemo every now and then. It's very difficult but fun and wonky enough to keep you playing.
River City Ransom! Such a fun game, especially with two players. Honorable mentions: Bionic Commando, Kid Icarus, Double Dragon II, Act Raiser, Life Force. The NES has so many good titles, it’s tough to make a list of only 20.
Oops Act Raiser is SNES😂
Out of the 20 games shown, the ones I've played are those below...
Number 13 - *Super Mario Bros. 2*
Number 12 - *Tetris*
Number 10 - *Batman*
Number 04 - *Super Mario Bros.*
Number 02 - *The Legend Of Zelda*
Number 01 - *Super Mario Bros. 3*
Of the three Mario games, my favorite was SMB2, although I also enjoyed the first SMB game. SMB3 was...okay, but I didn't particularly enjoy this one. Tetris and The Legend Of Zelda were very addictive for me. Batman was very difficult, even in the first stage. But, I loved the music that played during the first stage or two.
1. Mike Tyson's punchout
2. Mario 3
3. Castlevania
4. Teenaged Mutant Ninja Turtles
5. Jackal
6. Super Contra
7. Lifeforce
8. Mario2
9. Mario 1
10. Blades of Steel
11. Battletoads
12. Ice Hockey
13. Baseball Stars
14. Track and Field II
15. Legendary Wings
16. Bart vs the Space Mutants
17. Adventure Island II
18. Contra
19. T&C Surf Designs
20. Kings of the Beach
Your list is better than the list presented in this video! 😁👍
I'd swap out a few (mainly down to me not growing up with them), but you have many solid, unique titles listed here.
Kid Icarus should have been on this list, As well as Bionic Commando and Tiger Helli
My first mega man game was mega man 3. I loved it.i still do
"It could...drag-on." Masterpiece.
In case anyone out there was unaware, Super Mario 2 wasn't a Mario game. It was an Arabian Nights themed game called Doki Doki Panic, and the four characters was this Arabian family. You actually had to get all 4 characters through every level in order to win. When it was transformed into Super Mario 2 they of course reskinned the main characters, added a run button, only required you to go through the stages once, and I believe the warp zones were a new addition as well.
I would find it hard to believe that anyone who games hasn't heard of this.
And the prototype of this game was a Mario game, but Miyamoto didn't like the idea. FujiTV asked Nintendo to make a game of their characters and they continued the development of Doki Doki Panic but with different characters
Awesome video, liked and subbed!
Great list, think I would have went with metal Gear instead of Kirby though.
For sure! Kirby was just ok. Metal Gear was EPIC!
Crystalis needs to be on the list! Lol
My old favorite NES game is Stinger! Nice couch coop
Jackal , Lupin the third, tmnt tournament fighters, ninja cats, double dragon 2&3 , fatal fox , all deserve a honorary mention
Awesome!!
Nice list! I had covid in July 2022 and I was staying in my room away from my family. Watched movies and played Contra from the beginning to the end. It would have been impossible for me but I played it with miyoo mini and used a lot of save/load. I cheated yes, but it was fun.
We could argue about the placement of the various games, but our list is pretty much perfect.
Super Mario 2 doesn't deserve to be among even the top 100!
I can always depend on your top 20 lists to be some way off UK perspective. Thanks for not disappointing again lol
No worries!
We all have different favourites , but this list contains 20 games that at least can be considered top contenders.
I love that your background music is from Persona 4!
1. Mega man 2
2. Smb 3
3. Star tropics
4. Kirbys adventure
5. Metroid
6. Castlevania
7. Battletoads
8. Super mario
9. Contra
10. Tmnt 2
I’d have Super C over the first Contra. There’s no need to put two Mega Man games on this list, just keep the 2nd on there. I’d replace the third Mega Man with Crystalis. But the rest I can understand your opinion of.
To many repeats, not enough truly good classic's. The guardian legend, crystalis, destiny of an emperor, and omg romance of the three kingdoms 1.
Nobunaga's Ambition.
@@dawnfire82 I played that as well as a 10 year old. Ok game. Almost a copy of rot3k 1. I actually think i played NA 1st.
My top 10 favorite NES games:
1. SMB3
2. Final Fantasy 1
3. Gradius 2
4. Mike Tyson's Punch Out
5. Super C (Contra 2)
6. Solomon's Key
7. Life Force
8. Battle Toads Double Dragon
9. TMNT 1 (yes 1, not 2)
10. Battle City
Faxanadu, Bionic Commando, Strider, and River City Ransom.
Good list but was surprised Tecmo Bowl and Life Force weren't on it.
I'm enjoying this video/list, but TECMO Super Bowl has to be on here.
My list:
20. RBI Baseball
19. The Legend of Zelda
18. Dragon Spirit
17. Super Mario Bros.
16. TMNT The Arcade
15. Super Mario 2
14. Star Tropics
13. Blades of Steel
12. Legendary Wings
11. Ninja Gaiden II
10. Rad Racer
9. Mike Tyson's Punchout
8. Super C
7. Double Dragon II
6. Micro machines
5. Bases Loaded 2
4. Excitebike
3. RC Pro-Am
2. Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
1. Super Mario Bros. 3

Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle
Double Dragon II & III
Adventure Island III
Thexder
Nekketsu Dunk Heroes
Renegade
Super Contra
Astyanax
And more awesome games missed here
I know it might sound crazy but the best NES game is actually a Tennis game that i dont think was released in the US. It was mase with the same character/art style as River City Ransom. The controls for this tennis game are spectacular.
I remember, being in grade school, and being allowed a half hour of playing Batman, assuming I woke up early!
I was never late for school!
Turtles 2 on nes had not one but TWO port specific stages, the winter level after beating Baxter in the sewers and the Japanese style level after beating the grey stone warrior Konami named Granitor, but was never named on the show.
I like "The Bully" music in the background lol
Time to revive these games!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉
I agree with 90% of your top 10. Maybe not in the same order. You have good taste
You start the list with Maniac Mansion?? You bet im here for the rest. ❤
A friend and i went to walmart and bought 8 copies of Kirby's anventure at $5 a pop. Then took them back to places like kmart, sears, circuit city, etc, and got $60 a back for each. not a bad days work
I saw Metal Gear and Vice: Project Doom in the intro and got excited, then he got on with the same list that virtually all other TH-camrs make. :(
CV: "Don't duck this one guys!"
Me: Okay, get your coat.
😃👉👉
Everyone's going to have a different list, mine would have mega Man 6 instead of 3, because aside from 2, that was the one I had.
Crystalis, Blaster Master, Gremlins 2, Roller Games.
There were a lot of great games and many people know of the best.
But one thing I do want to say is Punch Out.
Yes, it was on the list.
But let's talk about how you have a game all about fighting bosses, where you have to worry about stamina, and focus on reading their tells to look for an opening.
I'm not saying punch out is a souls-like.
But I am saying it was a very clear early demonstration that that game loop is fun.
Blaster Master is definitely one of my Fav's! I also think Metal Gear deserves a place on the list here. I probably would have taken out the sequels to Castlevania and Super Mario 2 and added Metal Gear and Blaster Master.
Crystalis was so good.
Awesome vid! What is game around :25 with pig?
Life Force should be on the list. Also, Castlevania 3 > Castlevania.
My buddy and I stayed up all night to be Ninja Gaiden. While frustrating in parts. It wasn’t all that difficult. Great game.
Castlevania
River city ransom
Zelda
Bionic commando
Mike tyson punch out
Mario 2
The first turtles game.
Oh I remember Ninja Gaiden, that was so hard. But what a bunch of legendary titles; Super Mario, Castlevania, Metroid, Zelda, Mega Man.
Btw, Contra was named Probotector when I played it.
And you forgot one super amazing game, that doesn't get the credit it deserve; Faxanadu.
LoL no Blaster Master? Sad
This is the safest list I've seen in years, while still being baffling.
Dragon Warrior 1 over 3 AND 4? No Guardian Legend, Crystalis, Blaster Master, Bionic Commando, River City Ransom, Tecmo Super Bowl, Faxanadu, Goonies 2, Metal Gear, sleepers like Destiny of an Emperor, Metal Storm, Little Nemo, Little Samson, Snake Rattle n Roll, Willow, or Journey to Silius (or really any Sunsoft game not titled Batman)?
This list could've been generated by an algorithm using everyone else's lists. Maniac Mansion is the only outlier. This list adds almost nothing uniquely interesting or insightful vs lists made over the past 20 years.
Thanks for watching!
RBI baseball the first one and Tecmo football were my favourite.
I would add Faxanadu and Battle of Olympus, they are awesome even today.
Thanks for mentioning Battle of Olympus. Superb adventure… 🆙
Faxanadu was soooo hard
That ending 😂
I would remove the original Mario bros and just make it a "franchise favorite " instead of taking up 3 spots. I would add pro wrestling, sky kid and life-force, all very fun games of my childhood
Sky kid is pretty awesome.
Agree about the franchise instead of an entire spot, but I would have added Metal Gear and Blaster Master
Remarkably strong list. DuckTales FTW.
I might nickel and dime you on some placements, but the only blatant disagreement; TMNT 3 >>>>> TMNT 2. -yes, 2 was a solid repro of the Arcade, but we're talking about the best NES games, not impressions.
