Born 83 here. I had a nes at home, but my uncle had a master system. I was jealous. The sms was awesome! Eventually, as an adult, I got me an sms, multi cart, 3d glasses, and joystick!
Good selection. Feel free to use footage from our channel in the future. We literally finished the entire Master System library a few weeks ago and the videos tend to be in better quality than you'll find on other channels
I'm not sure I agree. Not only is the omission of any 3D games from this list rather glaring, but that of F-16 Fighting Falcon as a fully playable air combat simulator, which only requires both controllers to play and one which fits on a Sega Card no less, strikes me as especially glaring.
I've been playing a lot of SMS lately and have gotten through half of these. I would add (or replace with) Alien 3, Double Dragon, Rastan, and needs more Wonder Boy games.
Being a SMS owner as a kid, there’s A LOT of titles I LOVED that aren’t on this list…Penguin Land, Rescue Mission, Time Soldiers, Zillion, Montezuma’s Revenge, Keinsieden, Wanted, Safari Hunt, Alex Kidd in Shinobi World (but it’s basically Shinobi so that’s fine) I’m glad you had Dragon’s Trap on here. I’m also assuming if it was on the Nintendo (like King’s Quest, Double Dragon, Rampage, After Burner, Choplifter, etc) it wouldn’t make this list.
The thing that gets me with this list is that not only is there not a single 3D title on it, when it was one of the things this system did which was truly ahead of its time (including with a 3D arcade port of Space Harrier), but the technical marvel that is F-16 Fighting Falcon on a 32Kb Sega Card - a fully functional air combat simulator, using only both standard controllers to play it - is missing from this list.
Not sure why but when I think of the Sega Master System, the very first game that comes to mind is Golvellius - The Valley of Doom. I was addicted to that game!
Alex Kidd in Miracle World was a nice early response to SMB for us Master System owners; a needed platformer to keep us satisfied. That being said nothing topped Phantasy Star; easily the best JRPG for any 8-bit console, and well ahead of its time. It still holds up great today, especially with the re-localization and improvement hack applied, or even if played vanilla. Wonder Boy in Monster Land, Miracle Warriors, Power Strike II, and Kenseiden would also be in my top 20.
The pack in alex kid was maybe a very iconic game but i absolutely hated it, (the white angel tune of dying and back to the beginning tune are still gifted into my memory) Back then my parent would not get me another game until i finished alex kit (i never finished it) so it was only years later when i got a game gear + sms adapter that i really got to appreciate/enjoy the system. Phantasy Star, golden axe worrier, sonic chaos(gg only i think) and James pond II where my favorite games.
@@andrewrichards312 Yeah Lost Stars; that game has the distinction of being the first purchase and instance where as a young gamer I experienced the ill feeling of buyers remorse. Listening to the 1-800-USA-Sega automated phone message I thought that it was going to be a proper follow-up to Miracle World with the same type of game design. Didn't have publications back in 1987 to get further information. You could eventually get those Sega Challenge magazines by mail order from late 1987 and onwards but those were essentially glorified catalogs.
@@shiningphantasy1393 It's definitely a different platformer, but I the reason I rate it as the quintessential platformer is because for most of the levels you need to dodge enemies whilst navigating platforms and only have attacks for a short period of time. I wasn't that impressed with it either when i first got it, but over time it grew on me and I really felt a sense of accomplishment from finally beating it.
@@andrewrichards312 I can look back at it now 37 years later and no longer detest it; the sting of disappointment and my blown allowance faded long ago. I didn't even know at the time that it was an arcade port, as the game was never in any arcade that I visited, and Sega never promoted it that way. Ironically even though Enchanted Castle is more of a proper follow-up to Miracle World I prefer Lost Stars to that one, which had something to do with it being very underwhelming as a 16-bit Genesis game.
It certainly does. I played it again almost a year ago and still go back and replay certain parts. Like the Lassic battle, Darkfalz battle, and when Myau grows wings and you have to fight the Gold Dragon. This game will always be great.
It's better than most 16-bit RPGs, even those from the big name companies. In terms of story, graphics and art direction it's just better. It's held back only by sound quality. I play the original game and IV all the time, skip II and III.
Minor correction: the original Apple II version of Prince of Persia was released by Broderbund Software in 1989 but the Sega Master System port was released by Domark in June 1992.
Rastan, Golden Axe, Black Belt, Choplifter, Action Fighter, Alien Syndrome, Double Dragon, Rampage, Wonder Boy & Wonder Boy in Monster Land, Enduro Racer, & Micro Machines are ones I really like a lot. The Master System had some great games were far superior to their NES releases(Double Dragon)and even though i never really liked 1st person dungeon crawlers Phantasy Star was way ahead of its time.Other arcade conversions like R-type and Shinobi also made the system shine but the fact that Nintendo hogged up all the best 3rd party developers like Capcom,Konami,Tecmo,SNK,Square and so on hurt the system so bad along with it not being available except in a couple of specialty stores it just never really had a chance in the US to succeed.I think i only seen the system for sale twice around 1988 once in a ToyrUs and again at some type of mega store like I cant remember the name of.
Kinda a shame the way Nintendo did consumers with their shady business practices during this era. Some of the best NES games would have thrived on other hardware (SMS, PC Engine, etc...).
You totally forgot about Robocop versus the terminator okay? Not being the best game but it’s included voice sampling which blew us away when we heard Robocop Talk. “ thank you for your cooperation.” Micro machines was amazing on the master system. There are loads more I need to go through the wall and find them.
Mine are in no particular order 1. Shinobi 2. Kung Fu kid 3. Ghouls 'n Ghosts 4. Altered Beast 5. Spellcaster 6. Sonic 1 7. Sonic 2 8. Kenseiden 9. California games 10. Rastan 11. Wonder boy 12. Wonder boy 3 13. Double Dragon 14. Hang on 15. Zillion 16. Gauntlet 17. Golden Axe 18. Alex kidd in miracle world 19. ECCO the Dolphin 20. Land of illusion.
Wow... At least 4 games were on my own favorite list. (r-Type, Shinoby, Outrun and Sonic) You missed such great games like Rastan, Altered Beast, Quartet, Teddyboy, Ghostbusters or Transbot. Also you forgot some great Sportstitles like Slapshot or Wimbledon I and II, which already had a nice carreermode.
You're point with Teddy Boy and Transbot misses a key point with them. These weren't just great games - these were great games which they managed to fit on a 32Kb Sega Card, prior to their later re-releases on 512Kb cartridge I fact I think the most amazing technical marvel with the Sega Cards, is F-16 Fighting Falcon.
People also tend to hate on games like Master of Darkness because they are "Castlevania Clones" but with Nintendo's lock down on publishers even if Konami wanted to put a Castlevania game on SMS they couldn't release it here in the US. Though Simons Quest would have been even better on Master System
So many of these games I would have such a hard time actually putting in any kind of numerical order from best to greatest. But Alex kid definitely would not be my number one. Wonderboy three was by far better than Alex Kidd, but I am very happy to see my phantasy star at least reach number two.
Did you know that R-Type, and games similar in their horizontal-scrolling design, aren't actually considered to be _'Shmups'?_ They're Shmideways! 🤗 rimshot! _BA-DAT...PSSH!!!_ 🌽
I'm massively critical of a few omissions on this list, and I'm not just talking about an "I like it so it should be on the list" subjective yardstick. If that were the yardstick the omissions of Action Fighter, The Ninja, Double Dragon, Transbot and Astro Warrior would be my gripes here. Although that said, I do question why Alex Kidd in Miracle World was chosen over Alex Kidd: the Lost Stars, when playing the former is like playing tennis with the net down in comparison to playing the later in terms of the difficulty level difference between the 2 (in fact I'd argue that The Lost Stars is far more of the quintessential Master System platformer, than Miracle World). That said, there are a couple of massively glaring omissions from this list. Firstly, how on earth can you be talking about the Sega Master System 1 in its prime, meaning the Sega Master System 1, yet completely fail to include any 3D games from this list? Even if you want to argue that Missile Defense and Blade Eagle were glaringly mediocre, can you honestly say that Space Harrier, ported to the home console and playable in 3D on it, in the mid-1980s, wasn't an absolute technical marvel? That leads me to what I would argue is as egregious an omission, if not more so - F-16 Fighting Falcon. The fact that this was a fully functional air combat simulator on the Sega Master System which they managed to pull off requiring the use of both controllers (or if you don't mind foregoing your ECMs and throttle, just1 controller), would be amazing enough in and of itself, if it only got a cartridge release, where the game could take up as much as 512KB would be one thing. However this thing was so well coded that it fit on a Sega Card, which has a maximum capacity of 32KB! How on earth does that technical marvel - one of the earliest Master System releases too I might add, not make the list?! I get that a lot of this is going to be down to personal preference, but surely, a couple of slots on this list should have been saved for absolute technical masterpieces.
If it weren't for Nintendo literally preventing devs from developing for rival systems the SMS would've been more relevant and who knows how much market share it could've snagged from Nintendo.
My advice, stick with the original SMS library like the Wonder Boy series, Zillion, Enduro Racer, Shinobi, Rambo, Golden Axe Warrior, Phantasy Zone, ect. The Master is a GREAT console but stay away from the Genesis ports converted to the SMS. It does NOT handle Genesis games well but the original library is great👍
You would be surprised. Moonwalker, road rash, desert strike, alien3 and even streets of rage are all great ports of the mega drive versions, was just a shame streets of rage was only single player on the master system
la master system fue la segunda consola que conocí,la primera fue la nes,de hecho nunca pense que despues vendria la megadrive, ahi fue una evolucion que nunca pense que sacarían.
The Sega Master Systems sprite limitations partially kept the system back in a physical sense but Nintendo's strangle hold on publishing rights in the US had its first victim. However, as you can see by games like Phantasy Star, Mickey Mouse, and Donald Ducks Lucky Dime Caper the Master System crushed the NES in colors. Such better looking titles and so many great games that several were missed in this list: Alex Kidd in Shinobi World, Psychic World, Zillion 2, and many more. Great system held back by corporate politics.
"The master system has games that could theoretically compete with the NES," is kind of an odd statement as the SMS was objectively more powerful hardware than the NES, with the exception of the sound card. If only the US / UK versions had the FM sound card that Japan had as an add on. Anyway, this list is missing Golvellius: Valley of Doom, and the best Ys is Ys 8: Lacrimosa of Dana
I wonder if you could call the Master System a success next to other products, considered successes, such as the Epoch Cassette Vision, or even the Colecovision. In that, it was a smash hit really. 13mill and not 80mill. is a success next to a phenomena, which was the NES, for about a year. Unless you lived outside the borders of the United States of America (where they were having trouble shifting games for a 7-8 month period. It's boring printing too many carts stuff). Where the Master System was considered even better than the C64, which was more expensive and moved 12-17mill units.

KEINSEIDEN!!
Sonic 1
Sonic 2
Sonic Chaos
Castle of illusion
Black belt
Alex kidd IMW
Mônica no Castelo do Dragão
Land of illusion
Alex Kidd ISW
Fantasy Zone 2
Surprised that Ghostbusters (the best version), Cyborg Hunter, and Miracle Warriors didn't make this list!
Power Strike II is missing, definitely check it out
The Master System had some great games were far superior to their NES releases(Double Dragon)and even though i never really liked 1st person dungeon crawlers Phantasy Star was way ahead of its time.Other arcade conversions like R-type and Shinobi also made the system shine but the fact that Nintendo hogged up all the best 3rd party developers like Capcom,Konami,Tecmo,SNK,Square and so on hurt the system so bad along with it not being available except in a couple of specialty stores it just never really had a chance in the US to succeed.I think i only seen the system for sale twice around 1988 once in a ToyrUs and again at some type of mega store like I cant remember the name of.
Kinda a shame the way Nintendo did consumers with their shady business practices during this era. Some of the best NES games would have thrived on other hardware (SMS, PC Engine, etc...).
My older cousin had one and I balked at it as a kid!!! It was 1997 but still… What the hell was I THINKING?!???
I had 3d missile command with the light gun. It was awesome.
You totally forgot about Robocop versus the terminator okay? Not being the best game but it’s included voice sampling which blew us away when we heard Robocop Talk. “ thank you for your cooperation.” Micro machines was amazing on the master system. There are loads more I need to go through the wall and find them.
You forgot Wonder Boy & Wonder Boy in Monster Land.
The best 8 bit console
Mine are in no particular order
1. Shinobi 2. Kung Fu kid 3. Ghouls 'n Ghosts 4. Altered Beast 5. Spellcaster 6. Sonic 1 7. Sonic 2 8. Kenseiden 9. California games 10. Rastan 11. Wonder boy 12. Wonder boy 3 13. Double Dragon 14. Hang on 15. Zillion 16. Gauntlet 17. Golden Axe 18. Alex kidd in miracle world 19. ECCO the Dolphin 20. Land of illusion.
Wonder boy 3 was so good, fond memories.
Wow... At least 4 games were on my own favorite list. (r-Type, Shinoby, Outrun and Sonic)
You missed such great games like Rastan, Altered Beast, Quartet, Teddyboy, Ghostbusters or Transbot.
My favourite game crash test dummies good old days
People also tend to hate on games like Master of Darkness because they are "Castlevania Clones" but with Nintendo's lock down on publishers even if Konami wanted to put a Castlevania game on SMS they couldn't release it here in the US. Though Simons Quest would have been even better on Master System
Alien 3 was awesome.
Okay, thanks for the video, it's nice... but where is Kenseiden?!
Asterix was one of the best platformers.
THIS!
So many of these games I would have such a hard time actually putting in any kind of numerical order from best to greatest. But Alex kid definitely would not be my number one. Wonderboy three was by far better than Alex Kidd, but I am very happy to see my phantasy star at least reach number two.
Alex the kid, Ninja Gaiden, Sonic, Shinobi, mortal Kombat, etc... ❤
My top 6: 1. Phantasy Star; 2. Wonder Boy in Monster Land; 3. Alex Kidd i.MW; 4. Sonic (1-3); 5. Spellcaster; 6. Shinobi
I loved and still play Fantasy Zone 2.
8bit?!! These almost look like SNES 16bit!
Did you know that R-Type, and games similar in their horizontal-scrolling design, aren't actually considered to be _'Shmups'?_
They're Shmideways! 🤗
rimshot! _BA-DAT...PSSH!!!_ 🌽
Before I watch. BlackBelt better be on the list.... Let's see
I'm massively critical of a few omissions on this list, and I'm not just talking about an "I like it so it should be on the list" subjective yardstick.
Dang, no mention of Black Belt?
My advice, stick with the original SMS library like the Wonder Boy series, Zillion, Enduro Racer, Shinobi, Rambo, Golden Axe Warrior, Phantasy Zone, ect. The Master is a GREAT console but stay away from the Genesis ports converted to the SMS. It does NOT handle Genesis games well but the original library is great👍
You would be surprised. Moonwalker, road rash, desert strike, alien3 and even streets of rage are all great ports of the mega drive versions, was just a shame streets of rage was only single player on the master system
Teddy boy would be somewhere on there for me!
Wonder Boy is very good.
Also, Gangster Town is better than Operation Wolf.
Black Belt should appearance in the list too.
California Games are great.
la master system fue la segunda consola que conocí,la primera fue la nes,de hecho nunca pense que despues vendria la megadrive, ahi fue una evolucion que nunca pense que sacarían.
It is sad how forgotten Sega Master System is. It does have some really great games
It is well remembered in Europe and Brazil
The Sega Master Systems sprite limitations partially kept the system back in a physical sense but Nintendo's strangle hold on publishing rights in the US had its first victim.
However, as you can see by games like Phantasy Star, Mickey Mouse, and Donald Ducks Lucky Dime Caper the Master System crushed the NES in colors. Such better looking titles and so many great games that several were missed in this list: Alex Kidd in Shinobi World, Psychic World, Zillion 2, and many more.
Great system held back by corporate politics.
Also, how could I have missed the, far superior in my opinion, Ninja Gaiden game....
Techmo world cup 93
Masters of combat
Ninja gaiden
I cant believe you put those crappy racers in and not these
I wonder if you could call the Master System a success next to other products, considered successes, such as the Epoch Cassette Vision, or even the Colecovision.
Alex Kidd in Shinobi world should be on this list.
My favorite Master System is The Ninja.
My hero...vigilante
Wheres Asterix ffs😢
Have to have Rastan & Double Dragon
