  • Barkha Dutt speaks to author and mythologist Dedvutt Pattanaik on the inauguration of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, and what it means for Hinduism, india, and the world. He also speaks about the concept of Hindutva and Ram Rajya and what implications will the temple have on the Indian masses. We also discuss whether religious polarisation will overtake everything in the run-up to the 2024 elections where PM Modi will seek to return to power for his consecutive third term.

Right or wrong....'reclaiming' lost temples will erase a series of atrocities committed by invaders on Hindu civilization. This is the recentering of a nation's psyche and aid its journey towards its destiny - not with a troubled past but with a reassurance of newfound identity of itself.

We can excuse Burkha for not knowing anything that goes to make Indian ethos. She is totally ignorant about it. But Mr.Patnaik, on purpose, avoids the spiritual contents of Ramayana and Mahabharata. Spirituality is the soul of Indian Puranas and Itihasas. Social, ethical, moral, Dharmic, state craft contents etc., are only the shell of our epics. These things change with time and place. But the soul, which in this case is spirituality, is eternal.
That is the whole defect with Devdatt. He is interested only in the shell. Otherwise he has good knowledgeable of Itihasas and Puranas. That is why he becomes controversial.

Brothers, I think he is not saying these things in a wring sense. I think what he wants to imply is that, what the Bharat sages and rishis have accomplished is putting the events that have occurred in a very concise narrative, where the facts are not missed, but conveyed in a very clear manner. Unlike the news articles of today, where the actual message is misrepresented and leads to more confusion.

So one thing is clear from this debate that Ramayan/ Mahabharat are literary stories. Nothing true about it.
But u didn’t discuss how present day is compared with RamRajya under Modi who is more akin to Ravana. Modi has crossed all “Maryada “, very arrogant and still millions well educated/ poor follow him. He is master manipulator with money power/ muscle power ( through encouraging goonda elements) though born very poor.
Cheating, hatred and bigotry are his weapons.

Among all the stories of our heritage, Ramayana is singular and unique. Just about every corner of the Subcontinent can relate to the story, geographically speaking. From the north-east to central to dakshin to the southern tip of India; even Sri Lanka.
    The narrative connects everybody!
In contrast, while Mahabharata includes all the locations of the greater India, you need to go searching for it. Not readily obvious.

People either like or hate Devdutt, and I find myself feeling a bit of both.
I dislike him for being quite foul-mouthed, classless troll, especially on social media. While he possesses insightful knowledge about the epics, he fails to embody or live by the profound teachings he imparts. He comes across as opportunistic, Vile, crass and utterly uncouth. Much like many (not all) of our present day babas. Great pravachans but can walk the talk.
On the other hand, I appreciate him for making sense to those undecided, left-of-center agnostic Hindus exploring religiousness. He helps them see the depth in their scriptures. His appeal lies in connecting with English-speaking, agnostic Hindus who might otherwise lean towards Instagram anti-hindu activism. I could have been one of those individuals myself if not for Devdutt. And i suspect many in the comments section below.

When someone says stories, we immediately think that this is imagination, it is not REAL, its just some values and morals being taught through stories. However myhtological stories everywhere, are about TRUTH, but not always the truth that we know as material historical truth. Ok, sure some historical events are recorded as story, for example the matsya avataar and Manu, or the Noah's Art do signify an ancient flood which may have ended one age. Before another began. Or the dashavataras may signify evolution in a symbolic manner. But more importantly the truth and history that these 'stories' tell us are about the history of the human spirit, psyche, the higher consciousness evolving on this Earth and in the universe. Thats why we say that the mythology comes from a higher state of being, because there is a deeper consciousness (for all religions) which knows this past intuitively or via spiritual states. As history notes, stone age civilisations tended to have some forms of human sacrifice and even cannibalism. Then bronze ages did away with that, but sacrifice in general continued. And as iron age civilisations came religions became more complex. We also have a shift from overt sacrifice to the inner sacrifice and devotion to the divine, from Gods that are to be feared or pleased by offerings we have later a more personal and affectionate relation with God. Then we even have a more abstract idea of divine consciousness. These shifts are global. Our 'stories' are telling anout these true transformations and reflections also. So both those who dismiss them as mere imaginations of a culture and those who insist that they are historical fact as such, could instead note this third aspect. It is a more subtle kind of fact that myhtologies everywhere tell us. And this is why often cross cultural readings also reveal related (though not always similar) themes and truths.
Its also a fact that these stories or histories were written in their social times, and so are often also carrying values of the past, such as hierarchy and inequalities of certain kinds that were normal for a monarchy or agrarian-fuedal society, but will not suit our goals today. And thus even as we value and keep alive our traditional wisdom, it is best read with a free and open mind, very much aware of a world where everyone has equal dignity.

Yes Social Sciences or reading of mythology argues for being in the shoes of the other to eliminate inequality and otherness but increasingly what I realise have you pointed out the people have become egocentric. Science and development has a has a dark shade to it as well I agree. Look at old age homes old parents are made to live there young generation has no time for their parents. The "Ramayana" and the "Mahabharata" are the greatest mind-experiments in the history of human-kind.They raise 2 questions you have to answer for yourself: [1.] What would you do if your wife is abducted and you are monogamous? [2.] What would you do if your wife was sought to be abducted and she was polyandrous? In the first instance the hero is consumed by the fire 🔥 of suspicion. In the second case the heroes are devoured by the fire 🔥 of revenge. That these have been facts of life since time immemorial make them facts of history since the origin of man!

I think the central thought is ‘locus standi’ what is the standing of any character in the story are they aggrieved do they need justice? Only the aggrieved can ask for justice/ fight. It was not Hanumanji’s fight or any other character because only Ram and Sita were aggrieved with the sita apaharan. So only Ram can fight. The same is true even in Mahabharata. Krishna doesn’t fight because it is not his fight but Pandavs.

Extraordinary! Kudos Barkha. Deva Dutt is no less than a Maharishi! This is one of your best videos and certainly the best in terms of adding value to the children of India and indeed the World!. I hv downloaded this video so I can hear this from time to time as well as forward them to other kindreds! Hearing this vlog is no less than undertaking a serious spiritual practice!
By the way, the word Yagna….
Ya means ‘to be a boon to others’. Gya means ‘knowing something that was always present’. Hence Yagna is 27:30 the spontaneous act of helping other beings without pride, prejudice or profit! This is the essence of sanatana dharma.
Devdutt Patnaik has to be celebrated for airing this extraordinary insight and you Barkha have made your best offering before Lord Rama Himself! God bless!

Sir, you seem to have a hole in your knowledge of Mahabharata. Duryodhana and his mama were deceitful. They took Indraprastha from Pandavas by deceit. Promised to return it back after Pndavas completed vanabas and guptabas, just to break it. This is the very thing that started the war. Did Duryodhana break rule or not?

So much bullshit being peddled as expert analysis, how can he say Krishna broke rules, while Duryodhana followed them. Is he for real, the whole deal with Duryopdhana was to manipulate and bend rules to suit his outcomes. Countless examples such as Lakshagriha, poisoning Bheema, Gambling with loaded dice, not honoring the rules of war etc.
