The colored people of South Africa are the most genetically mixed people in the world, with genetic heritage from the Bantu, Khoisan, South East Asian, European and Middle Eastern. Mitochondrial DNA studies have demonstrated that many maternal lines of the Coloured population are descended from Khoisan women. As a consequence of Apartheid policies and despite the abolition of the Population Registration Act in 1991, Coloureds are regarded as one of four race groups in South Africa.
Thank you and welcome to Afroartista Films. The Coloured community has a rich history that dates back to the arrival of the first Dutch settlers in the 17th century. These settlers brought with them slaves from Indonesia, Madagascar, and other parts of Africa, and through intermarriage, a new mixed-race population was formed. The Coloured people were considered a separate group from the white settlers and the indigenous black population, and were subject to different laws and policies under apartheid.
About twenty percent of the Coloured speak English as their mother tongue, mostly those of the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. Virtually all Cape Town Coloureds are bilingual. About 13.5% of the South African population, around 7 million people, speak Afrikaans as a first language, making it the third most common natively-spoken language in the country. This is the language that most Coloured people speak. It evolved from early Dutch spoken by the first immigrants from Holland and despite obvious similarities with Dutch, it is today considered as a distinct language. Here is a sample of the language.
Coloureds are mostly found in the western part of South Africa. In Cape Town, they form 45.4% of the total population. The various subgroups of the coloured people are the Cape Malays, The Griqua, Cape Colored as well as any other mixed race broadly labelled as others. Cape Coloureds identify as black in every other country besides Namibia. The reason is because the racial classification in other countries is different from South Africa and Namibia's racial classification and other countries don't have the racial classification "coloured".
The Coloured community faced significant challenges throughout history, particularly during the apartheid era. They were denied many basic rights and faced discrimination in areas such as education, employment, and housing. The end of apartheid in 1994 brought significant changes for the Coloured community. They were no longer legally classified as a separate group and were granted the same rights as other South Africans. However, many Coloured people still face economic and social challenges, particularly economic inequality, Education disparities, Health disparities, Housing crisis, racial discrimination, Political under-representation and violence and crime.
Despite these challenges, the Coloured community has remained a vital and vibrant part of South African society. They continue to make important contributions to the country's culture, economy and politics. They have played a prominent role in the country's music, arts, and sports, and have produced many notable figures such as Alex la Guma, Trevor Noah, Peter Abrahams, Abdullah Ibrahim, AKA rest in Peace, Sho Machozi, and Zola Budd among many others. The Cape Malay coloured people are responsible for one of the most vibrant South African subcultures which can be seen in their unique Afrikaans dialect, foods and entertainment.
In conclusion, the Coloured people of South Africa are a diverse and resilient group that has played a significant role in the country's history and culture. They have faced many challenges throughout history, particularly during the apartheid era, but have remained a vital and vibrant part of South African society. It's important that we continue to acknowledge and celebrate the contributions of the Coloured community, and to work towards addressing the on-going challenges they face. Thank you for watching and see you again.

For those confused about the Coloureds & their distinction between Blacks or simply 'mixed race' people's, I'll give a summarized description below. For context, I lived in/around Cape Town for about 5 years, my wife/in-laws are all Coloured & I've studied their history at some length:
Coloureds are a distinct ethnic group predominately in the Western & Northern Cape and as far east as Port Elizabeth. They had a couple independent republics further east at the time of the the Afrikaner great trek as well called Griqualand. Their African admixture was typically Khoi/San, not Bantu. In Cape Town they might wellhaven Malay ancestry as well. The Malasian influence on cuisine spread universally throughout the Coloured people in South Africa as well (TONS of curry).
Culturally they have no tribal affiliation, unlike Bantus or Bushmen, have been largely westernized for centuries (similar to Mestizos in the Americas) & practiced Christianity since their ethnogenesis in the 17th-early 18th century. One of the first governors of the Cape Colony, Simon Van der Stel, was actually a 1st/2nd generation Coloured. The city of Stellenbosch outside of Cape Town is named after him. Linguistically they're responsible for largely altering the Dutch language unto what became Afrikaans, which is spoken by them and the Afrikaners (boers) as their primary language.
Partially due to their shared ancestry with the Afrikaners & co-mingling with them since Dutch arrival to the Cape, they've lived in the same communities as them, though in different neighborhoods for centuries. They do not consider themselves 'black' for all of these reasons, nor does anybody else in South Africa. Blacks, until quite recently, lived further east & north from the coloureds. If you ever visit Cape Town you will notice very different phenotype & cultural differences between Coloureds and the Bantu blacks who live in the city. Now somebody like Trevor Noah is mixed race but not Coloured. Reason being is that his mother was Xhosa, his father was Swiss, he grew up in a black township of Soweto in Johannesburg & spoke English & Xhosa. He did/does not have the cultural, linguistic, regional & the ethnic heritage of being Coloured.
In fact, in certain areas like Mitchell's Plain & the adjoining black townships like Philipi, Nyanga & Khyletshia, there can be quite a bit of racial/ethnic tension, particularly where these areas bump up against each other, largely due to issues of crime. Politically Coloureds vote contrary to the large majority of the black population as well, and when polled on the subject, tend to favor secession of the Western Cape from the rest of South Africa. Hope that helps.

And what you don't seem to know is that BEE (black economic empowerment) actually includes all races that were oppressed under apartheid, indians ( e.g Guptas) including chinese. You probably don't know your politics as usual. You still want to follow your master after why not because they classed as second class citizens while blacks were classified as third class citizens so at times your confusion is understandable. Btw both my paternal grandmother and maternal grandfather were 'coloureds' so i don't really have issues with coloureds but they don't seem to care about understanding SA politics. I am disgusted that anywhere on Earth there are still people so proud to be what they used to call all Black people in Amerikkka ( colored) we rejected that in the 1960's with " I am Black and I'm Proud " and Black Power. So sad to see they can end Apartheid but can't take away the Apartheid mentality. GOD willing Julius Malema will bring you to your senses. The Coloured community in the Western Cape is a diverse group of people with multicultural roots, including indigenous African, European, Asian, and Southeast Asian ancestries. The term "Coloured" refers to individuals who are of mixed ethnic origin and is a socially and politically complex issue in South Africa.
The Western Cape province has the highest percentage of Coloured people in South Africa, making up approximately 50% of the population. The community has a rich cultural heritage, with influences from various civilizations, such as the Khoisan, Dutch, Malay, and other African tribes.
In recent years, the Coloured community has faced challenges, such as high levels of poverty, unemployment, and inequality. The SA Genome Project 2021 aims to address some of these challenges by providing genetic research and data to improve healthcare and social policies for all South Africans, including the Coloured community.

The separation between white and coloured did not happen immediately as this video suggests. No white Afrikaner is pure white. The first Dutch settlers mostly came without their women and married Khoisan. It was the French Huguenots running away from religious persecution who were the first to come with all their women and also with a strict version of the Calvinist religion. Why apartheid was so stupid is that many families have members in more than one racial category. Some even in 3! The Coloured Xhosa have not been mentioned here either. Of mixed race they speak Xhosa as a first language and Afrikaans as a second language. The real situation is even more complex than this video makes out. I will not bore people with the complexities within my own family. Long Live South Africa! Long Live Africa!

You've seemed to have missed that coloureds are made up primarily of Khoi and San people and then cape Malay. The Khoi and San people predate the arrival of European traders, colonizers and slave trade. The Khoi and San are the brown indigenous ancestors of the coloured you're refering here (Griguas are but one of many tribes). Malay are the second most dominant ancestors brought to South africa by the colonizers from Indonesia. European, then Bantu, and others then follow as ancestors to the coloured nation as referred to today.
"Coloured" was a term introduced during apartheid and all non- bantu, european, indian people were placed under this umbrella term.
The Khoi and San have been fighting off western traders and colonizers since the 1400s and have been fighting them until apartheid placed them under the coloured banner.
Cape Malays and all other under the banner of coloured have been fighting against discrimination and prejudice long before apartheid; and these groups face the same challenges today, however structured under a indirect and more politically acceptable methodology.
Afrikaans was also created by the Khoi and San translators predating the vast settlement of dutch.
Khoi and San are still around, alive and contributing to society in South Africa, Namibia and Botswana - but are still viewed under the lense of Apartheid as "Coloureds" with NO recognition of their history, contributions and ancestory.
That said thanks for focusing on our community and people.

@lailahyt1572 you've discribed every human on the planet, no one race has the genetics of 1 source. Coloureds in the context of South Africa and the history of the apartheid categorical term describes mostly San, Khoi, and then Malay, etc in order of established land ownership and community development, in cultural and tribal context not European colonial context. Coloured is a kak generalistic, approximation term for "in the middle of black and white". Mixed race, mixed origin, mixed culture is specific, appropriate, considerate and more respectful of us with these origins and ancestors. The hard part is for those who do not know their ancestorial origins due to violence and misplacement of the past. There are winners and losers of every battle, and as long as theirs a race, there's a war - "coloureds" have strong and rich history, and those who stem from San, Khoi, and Malay have ancestors who've been fighting colonial and western appropriation long before those textbooks in the classroom elude to. Recognition and history must be taken not given.

This is an extremely emotive subject in South Africa simply because of apartheid legacy!
Nevertheless, anyone with admixture outside of Africa isn't pure African in the same way that any admixture that isn't European means the person isn't pure European.
However, all Southern African nations: Zulu, Sotho (Pedi, Tswana & Sotho), Xhosa have Khoi and San admixture especially Sotho and Xhosa.
Xhosa, Sotho and Zulu have click words that are San & Khoi language. Coloured don't have click language or words in their language, but the Europeans did brutalize, enslave and dessimite Khoi to create the coloured bastards.
At any rate, Southern African are light in complexion not beause of Europeans, but because of San and Khoi. Our eyes look Khoi because of the Khoi admixture. Lesotho.🇱🇸

What confusion ! Africa and Europe are continents , NOT races .
For example , if a black person is born and resides in Europe they are technically European
even though they are racially black . The same with a white born in Africa , they are technically African , though racially white .
The black Bantu Nguni people are all migrants from central Africa . They are not indigenous to SA . The KHOI AND SAN are distinctly different , by culture , religion , history , ethnicity and language . They've been distinguished as BROWN people . They are the only indigenous people of South Africa . They are the FIRST NATION the rightful custodians of the land . SA is the land of the Khoi and San !
Millions of so called coloured people are descended from them , thus placing the COLOUREDS above both black and white .

why? Bantu is referring simply to a certain ethno-linguistic grouping. The Bantu people originally come from western-central Africa, but migrated into other parts of Africa, arriving (peaceful and as aggressive invaders) during the 18th and 19th century in southern Africa.

      @@riccardodececco4404That is ahistoric revisionism.
In linguistics, the word Bantu, for the language families and its speakers, is an artificial term based on the reconstructed Proto-Bantu term for "people" or "humans". It was first introduced into modern academia (as Bâ-ntu) by Wilhelm Bleek in 1857 or 1858 and popularised in his Comparative Grammar of 1862.
As a proto-population it refers to an ancient agro-pastoralist population which blended with hunter-gatherers to form Southern African indigenous populations beginning millennia ago.
