GT NATIONALS - XW GTHO PHASE 2 - Is this the GT that started the Aussie muscle car war?

  • Well what can I say? I’m almost lost for words after completing a detail on not just another XW but another GTHO, this one being a Phase 2.
To have the opportunity to work on at least one of these cars that were built for one thing - Bathurst - is a true honour but to do two, pretty much back to back, I just can’t explain it. I learn something new about these legendary cars and their history every time i work on them and while speaking with their owners.
I have to admit I’m partial to the Brambles Red for the XW series probably because it lends itself to the famous win by Moffat in 1970 and a 1-2 finish for Ford.
Credit goes to Neil from XclusiveFX for the respray. You cannot just fully strip the car and go to town on it, there are strict guidelines both of us must follow and adhere too. After tidying up some loose ends on the paint, my attention turned to cleaning every nook and cranny, as you can see In the images, as well as treating and preserving whatever I can without altering the overall appearance and originality.
A lot of people (myself included) take these original Bathurst cars for granted especially with the amount of replicas on the roads these days. These were the cars you bought to tackle one of the greatest races in the world, Bathurst. How good would it be to see these cars on top of the mount at the 19th Falcon GT Nationals at Mt Panorama next weekend!
Another HO preserved for many more years.

Beautiful! I actually preferred the XWs over the XYs… they were just a better quality, nicer car imo

An Absolute credit to you mate in your attention to fine detail. I seen first hand the vehicles you completed at the 19th GT Nationals at Bathurst. Well done on your passion and drive. Im a high end detailer in Darwin NT and was flew down to Brisbane to also take care of 3 GT's for the Nationals. Feel proud that there is like minded people taking care to the highest level of Old School Cars like we do. Well done and keep the good times rolling mate. 🤙🤛

Nice clean detail, only the top stainless boot trim that runs over to the rear lights is low on the boot and sticks up 6mm to the light housings on the small sections.

IMHO the best of the ERA.
I cant believe they fitted X plys to these. I XVX Michelin to my gt and it transformed it from the Aquajets.

To be honest, I'm all XYed out.
XW and XY GT's are seemingly on the covers of every classic car magazine we see in the paper shop, yet most Australians have had nothing to do with them. They stop being unique when they're covered endlessly.
I'm 54. My first car was an XE Fairmont with the 302. By the time I was beginning to drive, XW and XY Falcons of any kind were already too old to be on my shortlist. Now they're even older........and twenty times more expensive!

Your XE is probably a bit better to drive then the XY or XW. Newer had issues fixed. Example. Disc brakes. Coil over suspension.

Totally understand. I myself was bought up on fords and loved the XY’s. They were very mystical to me. But like you said, every cover and every conversation it’s all we hear about.

I was never really a Ford guy; fell in love with the Valiant Charger at the Hardie Ferado in 71. But, across the big 3, Holden, Chrysler and Ford, Ford produced the best of Aussie muscle in my opinion. Not sure when it comes to donks, but everything else about the Fords of the 60s and 70s sure said muscle car in a way that the other 2 manufacturers products didn't.

Awesome. They sailed through McPhillamy like no other car coming around that corner. No run off back then either. The Charger, Torana and the GTHO, they all had their own distinctive cornering attitude, and that McPhillamy corner really showcased those attitudes. Just mathematics in motion, and so much better to watch than today's jobbies.

Dad took my two sisters and I in 71 and 72. Hooked on tin-toppin ever since. Goodwood Revival is a top TH-cam channel for a whole range of racing.

Drive the phase 1 and you will see how good the throttle response is compared to any gt ho. The cleveland 4v heads ruin the drive ability and is not good for the street.

No, the muscle car war ended at the XY which actually started with the XRGT
