  • On this episode of People's Party, Talib Kweli and Jasmin Leigh converse with long-time friend and Kweli-collaborator Ras Kass. They discuss the MC's legacy as a lyrical heavyweight on the west coast and he reflects on how he feels about his song "Nature Of A Threat" almost 25 years later. The trio also talks about the latest Ras Kass album "Soul On Ice 2" and how the original Soul on Ice album is more relevant today than ever.
Later, Ras talks about working with Dr. Dre while dealing with shady A&Rs. He details serving 21 months on a D.U.I. charge and what it was like for him being locked up. He also shares his experiences working on hood movie classics like "I Got The Hook Up" and outlines the emcees that had the most impact on his own rhyme style. Finally, Ras calls out the Royce da 5'9"'s album "Book of Ryan" for being one of the best albums he has heard in years.
The entire conversation is often funny, peppered with surprises, and rich with insight as two of "your favorite MC's favorite MCs" chop it up.

Ras is incredible. Nature of the Threat is one of the finest pieces of art that a human ever produced. Although I don't agree with everything said it in it, you still got to appreciate the greatness achieved in that song. So that alone cements Ras as one of the best rappers ever imo, even though maybe not everything he released matched the genius of penmanship and vocal skills in that song.

Rass is a generational talent. His style is west coast but lyrical. A real MC, and definitely not a sell out! He could’ve chased the bread. I almost think Miami Vice was the only song that went mainstream because of Coolio being cameo’d on it. And it was on the soundtrack of the Substitute with who would have guessed Mark Anthony. Keep rapping Rass, and Interview with the Vampire really blew my mind. Not just the message but the fact he spit 3 different people/views in one song. Flowers

I got to meet & hangout with Ras Kass in Columbus Ohio in 2013. I was kinda surreal. Been a Ras Kass fan since the 90s & really forgot about him through the 2000s. About 2007 or 08 I rediscovered Ras Kass & started listening to his old stuff and stuff I missed. 2013 I was at this Gaming store called Vgmx I frequented alot because I'm a gamer & it was right across the street from my apartment. I happened to stop in there and 1 of the guys who worked there said yea some rapper named Ras Kass I supposed to be here...Im like Ras Kass??? He said yea you know him?? I was like are you lying lol. Long story short Ras was mad cool. I think he had Ray Cash with him.

Great interview. Nature of threat and Interview with a Vampire are the songs that make me feel like a student of hip-hop. Off the strength of those two songs put him in my personal top 20 dead or alive.

Met Ras at a smaller local concert in metro Detroit last year. Dude is so humble and nice. Got to talk to him for 15min. I asked some questions, he asked me some. He even remember my name like a hour later. Him, B Ali and Aesop all top notch.

This episode is like being in study hall. In depth conversation about real issues that need to be discussed. Ras is a brilliant man, walking book of knowledge, layers.
    He is a star.
    Four Horsemen.
I've been hooked on JRE and lately I've been hooked on Talib Kweli, People's Party.
Jasmine is great, learning so much from her as well.
    Keep Going Strong.

Stee Lo Ras Kass was way better than anyone (lyrically) back in the day. Do you realize that he and Canibus are arguably the only ones who mastered Rakim’s complex art of rapping? Ras Kass is in the top 5 lyrically. Name me one rapper except for Canibus who can match Ras Kass lyrically.

I like the young lady, she adds to the conversation in a good way which is a rare trait in podcasts these days. In my opinion Ras has the greatest pen ever. Nature of the threat, Ordo Abcao, How to kill God, Deliver us from evil and others. No other rapper writes with that type of impact to me.

Nature of the Threat was that joint and still is. That track is a reflection of real hip hop because you wouldn't be able to get it at first listen. Sure, certain lines would've jumped out at you but you needed to take that joint to the headphones or back to the stereo system and let it marinate. I been on FB for 10 years and have posted it at least 4 times on my timeline.
