The standard loss of definition was funny...
Music contracts should be seen as bank loans, but the fairness should be leaned on the masters, let's say an artist gets 2.00 up front, those 2.00 must be made back by the masters for the lable. As soon as those 2 dollars are made back the masters should be transferred to the artist. And the artist has to pay an interest rate of all sales of music till another 2.00 is made and paid to the lable... If the first 2.00 is paid back quickly from a hit. The artist and lable should renegotiate that same 2.00 and see if it can grow to 4.00 while the song is hot. Since the risk is on the label thier internist goes up till that 4.00 is paid... But the masters are in the Artis hands...
Lables double money, artist grow. It's more like a pawn loan than a bank loan. If a label is not happy w double the investment they are being crooks.

Maaan I agree that artist need to have the information before going into a deal. But people gotta stop thinking of these as partnerships and think about it like stock. If I invest in your business when your stock is at $1 a share and I buy 50% of your business, you can't come back to me when the business is worth $2 and tell me the deal was unfair. You used my money to build that value. If the business failed, I would've lost $50. If I didn't invest, you wouldn't be at $2 right now. People in the music industry don't pay you based on your current worth. It's based on the belief that you MIGHT make it worth the investment.

Joe's ideology in music is that the business of music is flawed but he doesn't understand that they should change the deals. He always sides with the business point of view that the money people have to do it this way.

A few questions…why do I really need to “own” an artist masters? Second I hear about the percentages that artist get. let’s say before streaming an artist is getting 12 cents for every record sold well there are 100 points where’s the 88 cents going? If I were to start my own record label today I would allow all my artists to own their own masters. Each artist would have their own website, I would bring back fan clubs where fans would get exclusive merch and access to news music shows etc. I would encourage my artist to put out as much music as possible including mixtapes. I would negotiate a term where my initial investment would give me a favorable return however after 1st year the artist must invest in themselves as well. I would supply each artist with a social media and marketing team however those expenses and the value would have to be discussed.

I've always felt the initial artist will be disgruntled with the bigger artist they're signed under or whomever is the figurehead of their deal at some point. Every artist that didn't get to reach their potential, had broken promises, or even the superstars like drake has their story imo

Ish touched on this, but every time I hear this type of conversation about contracts I think about sports. In the sports world there are incentive based contracts. You get paid an ok amount, but if you hit certain milestones you’re entitled to even more money. It doesn’t sound like this exists in music or it’s at least rare. Perhaps they should talk to the sports guys about how that set up works.
