@@prototype8137 Im true head since '88, was big into the underground in that era as well. If you think they were mainstream, then who was underground? My first exposure to Kweli's show. Didn't even know my guy had one. I was smiling from ear to ear the whole way. I can listen to the greats ramble on about hip hop forever. This didn't disappoint. Glad Ev got to open up.
I'm 29 and this took me back to being 12-16. Hearing these stories are so dope. I'm a NYer who first got hip to westcoast gangster rap. LA's underground rap scene was crucial to my growth when I was a bit older. Ev seems like a cool ass dude. Jiu jitsu and all that. I lived in Venice for a year and got to know some locals and he definitely fits that Venice Original type. Shout out to Talib as well. Another legend in his own right. I'm now a new listener to this podcast.
Evidence has been an inspiration to me since, 97? maybe 98. but damn, he touched on something in this interview that helped me realize why I like this guy so much( big shout out to Talib Kweli , Jazz and the people's party for making this interview happen) it's because he does put his personal life out there, if you've been listening to this man for as long as I have you know his struggles, and you might be able to relate to some of them like I have. For me personally, that makes his music that much better. I'm hopin to catch this guy one day at a show just to say thanks.
This is fantastic Mr. Greene 💥 I love the knowledge dropped in this and the fact that Evidence WANTS to come back - literally wanted to save his stories for his return. Loved every minute. 🥂 Bless.
This was the illest interview I've seen in a minute! So informative, & Heartfelt.much respect & love for KWELI & EVIDENCE. Two of my favs engaging in meaningful relevant dialog about Life, Hip-Hop, the Human condition etc. I will describe this interview in one word. REFRESHING!!!!!! Big up Evidence & Thank you Talib! Both of you,,KEEP STRIVING 4 EXCELLENCE Peace & Blessings to ya. (Dj KAMAKAZE)
Diehard Dilated fan (So much so that "All movements begin underground" was my senior quote in highschool). Good to see The Weatherman getting an interview. Respect Talib for having him on.
Arguably one of the best interviews online ever. Not cause the name dropping but because of the sincerity and realness that connects EV, Kweli and the generation of artists that come from that same era. So enlightening, beautiful stories. I grew up with you dudes and everyone you mentioned. I kinda owe you guys for keeping me straight. THIS IS HIP HOP! NOTHING BUT LOVE. BEST HIP HOP CHANNEL.
Two dope legends in one room conversing, some nice eye candy for a co host who also contributes to the conversations thoughtfully, lol diggin this interview. Can’t believe I missed this podcast when it originally came out
I was there in Boston for that "Worst comes to Worst" tour. It was a cold November day. I lost my fake ID, I gave my money to a homeless woman, and my people had me outback waiting for someone to pick something up. However, I bumped into y'all and you let me carry T shirts, then gave me a VIP pass. Forever grateful. Y'all were so cool. I forget who toured with, but one group had two MPC's and they kept hitting me up for weed. I gave em' a cupfull of outdoor, went home broke, but had one of the best nights of my life.
No lie, no exaggeration whatsoever: Dilated Peoples (was one of 3 groups really who) completely and utterly changed my life. I thank Ev, Rakka, and Babu so sincerely, for so much.
It's generally good to explain terms with interviews like this. She understands that it's important and doesn't want digging to go over people's heads.
58:50- 59:58 Thank you for sharing and paraphrasing how you heard Mtume explain artist development in an interview from off the top. This whole episode was time well spent.
This so good. First time I heard Ev was on the Loot Pack album Soundieces: Da Antidote - still one of the best underground hip hop albums of all time - would be sick to have Wild Child and MAdlib
Much luv to Talib Kweli & Evidence been a fan of you each for year's.💯💯💯 We need some of the homies from Rhymesayers on here like Brother Ali, Atmosphere etc....
Man.. I'm so late to this interview. I listened to both of them growing up. Talib with Too Late back in 98. I was 7/8 years old. And Dilated the very first song I heard was Back Again. These guys got me into really sitting down and writing rhymes.
Are y’all doing an Evidence / Dilated Peoples / Step Brothers playlist like y’all did with T.I., Talib, UGK, etc? I would very look forward to that!! So many classics in all of their catalogs 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
that was a dope interview! Ev...On your last tour... I met you in London On and you signed my vinyl... also talked to you with my gf at the tour bus in Waterloo On a couple days later. Loved your material since work the angles...youre an amazing artist! Nothing but respect for you...YOU are an inspiration! Thank You!
I hope Imagery, Battle Hymns & Political Poetry will be explained (and hopefully pressed) in the next interview. Plus, w/o Ev, there wouldn’t possibly have been a Kanye. Dope interview as always! Maybe have DJ Neil Armstrong on one?
Trbl Fngrs I still have that album on a burned copy with a handwritten tracklisting in my music collection. "I want it all" and the Redman feature track are my favorites.
@@CarlosHernandez-rl2wg for real? Dam bro you lucky. I heard about that album on this Dilated Peoples documentary. They say its not getting released though.
I love Evidence music, so grateful I saw him live in Copenhagen. In the early Dilated Peoples days his voice didn't work for me, but somewhere along the line he stepped up and now he's incredible to me. Peace and Prosperity to all my Party People!
Evidence is Dope, been following since I heard Mr. Slowflow, then got into Dilated after. He opened up a whole new world for hip hop, from the Alchemists to Defaris to Fashawns, etc West Coast Rap..
Sick. I love how, as cliche as it may sound, all the stars aligned. No pun intended. You start connecting the dots, and this cat knew that cat and so forth. It's just those who wanted it more and had that drive actually did something. Superb. Peace and love from South Gate, California. 🤘😆🤘
Great convo. Evidence is world class. Thanks to Kweli and People’s for making it happen. Subroc is my choice for best mc/dj from the era. God made beats like a painter paints a scene. He could attack a verse, or glide on it. I was so into all that posse at the time. 3rd, Chubb Rock, Nice&Smooth, but KMD was so special. I felt like Sub’s passing was a monumental loss that hip hop has never really acknowledged, because his genius was so beyond. While Doom certainly shines bright, the idea that those brothers could have aged like fine wine, together, it’s just tragic.
Love Evidence and Dilated. Back in the late 90's, I did a show with them before they signed to Capitol. That was their moment and everyone knew it. Shout out to FRIDAY NIGHT FLAVA'S - dropped that gem at age 16.
College Dropout tour! Hell yeah still got my tour shirt with him and his long sleeve yellow and blue stripped polo with the collar flipped up on it. Hell yea h.o.b Hollywood! NEVER FORGET!

Talib I would love to see sum more producers on here, Preemo, Hi-tek, RZA?
This to me is the best episode and it changed my opinion of Talib as a host.
Honestly one of most underrated and consistent MCs ever
Evidence has always been so smooth to me. Been rocking with dude since Dilated Peoples and he’s gotten better consistently.
Talib and Ev help define underground hip hop for me. This is classic.
