Smash Ultimate did a really good job expressing how each Pokemon are unique to each other and implementing main series moves in a unique twist, it's a shame they aren't as popular but it's awesome to see them in action whenever someone like Quidd, SkyJay, Bassmage get to play.

It’s really great how smash played with each pokemon’s concept too. I really like how smash exaggerated each pokemon’s origin. Pikachu is extremely fast, small and full of potent power. Jigglypuff is practically always airborne, being a balloon. Pichu hurts itself with every single electric move it does, showing its carelessness. Squirtle utilizes lots of water movement and all its limbs to be very expressive. Ivysaur makes use of all its vines, seeds, and leaves. Charizard is full of equal flying-type and fire-type moves and also keeps the heavy-hitting style. Lucario’s aura is turned to 11 with its life force essentially, making use of it in nearly every attack showing its true power. Greninja’s sleekness and mobility are extreme and the ninja techniques are also there as well. Incineroar is just fully a wrestler, with oppressive power and impactful hits. Mewtwo is full of strange, yet extremely strong power that shows with the different effects in its animations like the shadows, dark magic, and random electric bolts.
Personally I love the Pokemon characters, specifically with Pichu being my favorite. Pokemon Trainer feels like the best execution of a Pokemon character, mostly because it showcases the main draw of Pokemon: Building a team to fight together and compliment each other

Feels like Mew could have a "jack of all trades" playstyle, seeing how it's extremely flexible in Pokemon. All of its stats are 100, and it has the widest moveset of all pokemon, including learning the move Transform. And historically it HAS seen a multitude of different playstyles and movesets. It can buff itself before sweeping, it can stall, it can revenge kill, it can just be generically good.
As a lucario main, watching lucario do hype things in competitive play is way more satisfying than watching steve and sonic players.
I personally think the Pokemon characters are the most fun to play. They are all so unique and provide a new style of playing that personally little other characters can capture. They also provide the most hype on gameplay to me.
I can't wait for the Pokemon Movesets. Gonna be pretty sick. MockRock and you have probably already chosen the Pokemon, but I think one for Scizor, Orbeetle, or Blacephalon would be cool.
I think they’re talking about remaking already existing Pokémon, like what MockRock already did with Link and Cannondorf.
My top picks for standalones would be Garchomp or Gardevoir. Both are exceptionally powerful, early, and easy to get. That combination means they are basically on every player’s main team through their respective regions in the story mode, more consistently than even the 1 in 3 for the starter Pokemon.
In addition, both Garchomp and Gardevoir have get heavy use in gym/league battles throughout the franchise’s history. Both have been on competitive Pokémon world championship winning teams twice, and have seen widespread use in all formats. They both have unique typings that Smash doesn’t have (fairy, ground and dragon). Gardevoir’s overlap with mewtwo would not be reflected in game, because Mewtwo uses “shadowy” animations for his psychic moves while Gardevoir would have effects more like Zelda. Lastly, they both have internet meme presence outside of their games. Garchomp/Cynthia are meme’s constantly for their ball-bustingly hard league match. Gardevoir is meme’d for… there are memes.
as blacephalon is my favorite pokemon, i am legally required to agree. id imagine itd be very floaty and... explosive, with a similar concept to mewtwo, tho probably even more extreme. mind blown being a huge kamikazee-style move but in the form of a projectile sounds so fun.
As someone who played greninja for a long ass time, i will also say that he also suffers from his moves just sometimes not working which I would imagine make him REALLY frustrating to play in high stakes situations. The fact that it’s specifically upsmash and up air at high percents, meaning that you’re losing out on a kill doesn’t help
I think it’s good to give every character a chance in this game. If you don’t like them that’s fair but don’t judge them just by what they look like they can do. I learned this with Corrin - I was trying to find a character that could handle the Sonic matchup, and I discovered Corrin. According to the matchup charts I’ve seen, it’s an even matchup, and I’ll take it when the rest of my lineup is Joker (who I primarily play), Sephiroth, Mewtwo, and Robin. I originally didn’t think that Corrin was that fun to play, but as I started learning the character I was proven wrong - Corrin’s actually more fun to play than I first thought.
Moral of the story: just play around with different characters, you may find one you unexpectedly like, and don’t judge a book by its cover

I just can't stop playing incineroar, I always gravitate towards low tiers for some reason and in SSBU it's incin and K Rool. Incin's grappler playstyle is super enjoyable and it feels really rewarding when you are able to outplay your opponent with patience. Revenge is one of the best designed moves in ultimate just because it allows you to build up some big damage if people try and keep you out too hard.

To me that's why Skyjay is so strong. Playing this type of character with a wider range of 60 to 140 means it relies more on you to make it work properly but when you succed, it makes your character look broken because the character is always more carried by their strengths compared to characters with a range of only 80 to 120. And there isn't really anything you can do about it cause outclassing you is a part of their design. In other words, these are characters that require you more to be skilled to play them but they'll give you more reward and ease the better you are compared to more classic fighters.
So the answer is no one plays these characters cause you need to be very good to play them but that doesn't make them inferior in term of strengths to others. It's just that the consistency relies more on you than it relies on the game itself because of their design and not everyone is able to make them shine.
Good gameplay philosophy when you think about it cause the win depends on the pokemon trainer to use their pokemon in the best way in Pokemon. It's almost too perfect when you transpose it in Smash. It perfectly corresponds to the spirit of the Pokemon franchise. I don't know if it's intentional from Sakurai but whether it is or not it's genius.
I disagree on saying putting all your eggs into on basket and leaving nothing for the rest doesn't make for a very good choice in the long term though. Whether it makes it a good or a bad choice can only be determined by the outcome in the end. Putting only one egg into multiple baskets reduces your chance to succeed. It's just a more risk more reward mindset in the end. Just like the glass canon archetype mindset pretty much. As long as you're strong enough to make up for your weaknesses, no one can beat you whereas a more all rounded character can lose by excelling in nothing like Pit or Mario. Other characters simply win or are top tiers because many characters are stronger in different areas than a Pit but not in all of them like jumps. The less extreme the weaknesses of the Pokemon characters would be without reducing their strenghts, the higher and the more played on the tier list they would be. It's nothing more than a matter of balancing for everything that can change the way you see it when you think deep about it.
nice video man, really helps explain why they aren't as popular as characters despite being some of the stronger ones in the game. But im begging you PLEASE make a "Why No One Plays Pichu". I main Cloud/Roy but im always switch between like 15 different characters, and a standout that i always love using is Pichu.
Most people only care for the fighters in smash because of simply what tier they are in rather than their series and it's backgrounds, I mean why else is Palutena so well known now? For Pokemon I kind of think it's the same deal despite how well their universe is represented.
I bet the pokemon were designed to where you have to be good at using at least 2 or 3 of them so that you have a "team" that covers each other's common weaknesses, the way it works in the actual pokemon games (Being a Pikachu main but having Incineroar and Greninja as secondaries for example)

Although a lot of people (myself included) were hoping for Decidueye to be Smash Ultimates' newcomer Pokemon fighter, Inceneroar is actually kind of the perfect choice since he's the best possible representation for Pokemon's competitive side (because Incineroar is extremely common in Pokemon's competitive meta).

To call them unpopular feels a bit of a stretch. The most unpopular ones are that way because they have glaring issues. Lucario has awful damage until he’s within kill range, and has poor combo game. Pichu is just worse pikachu who is top tier, an mewtwo’s tail has a hit box which bein as light as he is often screws him over. Jiggs an incinerator despite bein pretty bad are somewhat common.

This is oddly helpful for my current impulse to attempt to theory-crafting some of Pokémon's rivals (SMT, Digimon, Yu-Gi-Oh, Yokai Watch, Medabots).
And yes I know that unlike the others Yu-Gi-Oh has no claim to be a video game series, but its TCG gives it so much mechanical identity that it's still fun to theory-craft around as a fan. Just imagine Kuriboh having each special be a powerful Trap or Spell themed move, and a Cards resource thst refills while grounded. - The idea of Trapper Jigglypuff with a harsh limit for balance...

Jibanyan as an Ice-Climbers style character with his Nana switching between The Koma Knomad Twins with Down-B, while the other one Inspirits him.
Agumon reacting to their Tamers playstyle to determine the evolution (as a substitute for care, training or personality that the Digimon franchise likes). Though the idea of having multiple moves with Homing Attack and Auto-Reticle style properties on a character from a series known for Auto-Combat sounds really neat.
At least incineroar is a meta treat again in a few weeks for the vgc

I do think that the variety pokemon adds is important, especially in the way in handles counters. But I also think that we don't need so many projectile characters.

A lot of my friends had played Pokemon and they really enjoy some games of the franchise, but its weird that no one of them uses pokemon characters in smash. I have seen more people using Fire emblem characters than Pokemon since ultimate came out.

I was skeptical getting into this one, like "how could you find one single reason that fits such different characters ?", but that was really convincing. It also helps me understanding why I consider every Pokemon to be hype as hell in Smash despite not being a big fan of the series.

Greninja is one of my fav Pokemon and one of my most played Smash characters.
They basically are kinda like Shulk, or Shulk is a pokemon that can switch types with neutral B
When you said that if Nintendo/Sakurai removed Lucario's Aura and then re-balanced it around the lack of Aura that Lucario would be a better fighter, I had to give it a moment of thought. Then I realized that, as a Lucario main (and more importantly a life-long Pokémon fan), I wholey agree.
Aura in Pokémon isn't a damage-based power gage like in SSB. It's an ability Riolu and Lucario have that let's them read people's emotions and intentions.
How would you go about re-balancing Lucario around a lack of Aura? (I'd make it's damage output at half of max Aura it's new baseline.)
I'll say it once I'll say it a million times... I'd pay a lot of money for a smash bros game with ONLY pokemon. You could go as far as adding type advantages, evolutions etc.
Smash's B button special moves work perfectly with Pokemon. You could forget and learn different moves to map to your neutral B, side B, up B and down B

It’s funny you say that Ivysaur is the least powerful when it seems like most people use Ivysaur the most out of the three pokemon. I can agree his fair and bair are not great but his other moves are so strong it doesn’t really matter. What makes him so bad is his recovery which simply doesn’t work sometimes.

I think he should do ‘Have Meta Characters Fallen Off’ which explains why characters like Aegis, Palutena, Sephiroth, Roy and Kazuya, who were considered overpowered at the start but have started to get neglected and are falling off the meta.
I think I can speak for a large portion of the playerbase when I say that there’s a lot of gratefulness that people aren’t playing Pythra as much anymore
Well pythras fall off is honestly easy to explain when looking at them.
mythra is character who theoretically should never or barely lose any game in neutral with a stronger version of bats with in, amazing frame data,movement, range, and combos. While pyra albeit slower is more beefy attacks that are almost Ganon levels of strong.
But that’s the problem, in theory should be good. Unfortunatley we are humans and we make mistakes and those mistakes put us in disadvantage and unfortunately, pythra disadvantage is not great due Bad recovery.
With this in mind the reason pythra fell off is simply put… their true raw power is only available by players who can almost perfectly navigate the two in neutral and abuse everything but due human errors, that’s not possible which is really frustrating and leads to their mains picking characters who’s margin for error are smaller
This is also why a lot of characters feel stronger than tier list implies or why some characters are worse than they appear on a list. In theory, kazuya ain’t that great as even with his power and true 0-deaths, his poor neutral and even poorer disadvantage makes it really easy to abuse him in theory while incineroar and his speed causes him the same issues. But due to errors such as misspace or bad play from nerves, these 2 can abuse that so hard and punish players for those mistakes.

Something you didn't touch on is that since (most) Pokémon fighters in Smash represent species of Pokémon, rather than specific characters, there is a lot more variables in what moves a Pokémon in Smash can have, compared to a group like Mario characters, who have very distinct sources to pull moves from. Each Pokémon has hundreds of moves to choose from, so the Smash team uses Pokémon characters to make more experimental movesets/attributes, which makes Pokémon in Smash very hit-or-miss. I mean, I haven't met anyone IRL who enjoys how Lucario or Greninja play in Smash. They might like the Pokémon, but the movesets are more Smash-original, and Smash-original content is notoriously inconsistent in quality (your mileage may vary).
Hey Vars, do a “why no one plays mega man”. I don’t play mega man, but he’s a really interesting and unique high tier character, that has what it takes to win, but doesn’t see much play.
Mega man has great aerials, but he can't combo very well.

There's a channel called Design Dorks that saids Mega Man in Smash feels too much like his boss fights rather than how he plays in levels. So for those that enjoy Mega Man levels more than the bosses, MM in Smash may disappoint???
Especially since Mario and Luigi in Smash aren't restricted by their boss fights for Smash. Making MM even more hard to accept.
Nintendo should ad Ogrepon to smash so we can have an all around generalist fighter who is good vs everyone.
I feel like its so weird that the phrase "but if only it wasn't on incinaroar..." became popular back when ultimate was 2 years old. If you stripped the character down to his movement options, he'd look like nintendos humorous rebuttal to hearing that ganon is bad because hes slow and laggy. I could see some characters killing for a move as versatile as Alolan Whip, but because they put it on arguably the worst mobile object in the game; it (and its many other broken moves) turns the character from unplayable to mid.
Zacian and Meowscarada better be in that MockRock video, tho honestly Delzethin and FeliciaFan probably did them better than MockRock could
I've said it before and I'll say it again if Lucina and crom were not in this game and just were skins instead people would not be so upset by the fire emblem cast. We don't need four versions of a singular character with slight variations because those four characters make up for half of the cast from the fire emblem series that we have in this game.
Honestly, despite being a totally different moveset, it was Corrin that did it.
Corrin was a promotion character, who turned out to be very unpopular. Not helping their case was that Smash 4 had already added two fire Emblem characters, in Lucina and Robin, and had already had a Fire Emblem DLC in Roy.
This combination of features came together and really cooked off the ire towards Fire Emblem characters.
If they had picked, say, Sigurd, people would have been much less annoyed, even if still nobody knew who he was, he would have been accepted better as a legacy character.
If Corrin and Fire Emblem Fates wound up being great, and not the blemishes on the franchise they are, people would have warmed a bit better.
If Robin or Lucina hadn't been added, Corrin probably would have felt less excessive.
If Roy had been in the base game, and Corrin was the only Fire Emblem DLC, fewer people would have felt like their series was shorted or cheated.
And, on release, Corrin very much had that premium crust of overtuned performance that made people that much more negative towards the character in general.
But all these things came up tails together, and came together to make a lot of people pretty unhappy with Corrin. No matter what complaint you had, someone had your back on it, with more reasons to dislike them, and fuel the annoyance in oversaturation of Fire Emblem characters

Yeah, but like, Chrom and Lucina are ultimately harmless, so I GET while people get upset, but those people are also clueless to what echo fighters even are, treating the two as if the devs spent a lot of time on them only to end up as clones. I GET where people get frustrated THINKING there's a lot of dedicated "slots" given to FE characters, but for those of us who understand (like you and me) we know that isn't the case.
Basically: (certain) people continue to think that echo fighters somehow took spots of actual, unique fighters, but they didn't; and it's on the onus of those who don't understand TO understand that they are extra characters who had a smaller following that got them to be in the game. Sometimes even just as "glorified" alt outfits.

they didn't take up character spots but they were still kinda lame, I remember super early ulimate there were difference like peach and daisy's turnips and then they patched that out completely even though it wasn't nessessary. Echos really should've had more differences like that even if they don't replace characters, what's there to get hype about if they're basically a glorified skin unless they're a fire emblem character or werid cases like dr.mario, lucas and dark pit@@Granetdud

I play Mewtwo, Greninja, PT, and Pikachu. I have never played a Pokémon game. I just like them
I don’t necessarily agree that pokemon is designed for the players to build balanced teams. The games are designed so that even inexperienced players can beat the main campaign with just a team of favourites, which is partly why the series has so much mass appeal. The fact that so many challenge runs are possible while also usually banning extremely powerful and almost universally available strategies such as evasion and using items in battle is a testament to that, not an exception.

@@madnessarcade7447 Except there isn’t any point in the video where he said he’s only talking about competitive pokemon, especially since he brings up the challenge run videos and shows the AI Turo battle from Violet, both of which are concerned with the main campaigns of pokemon games rather than competitive battling. I think you’re that one that needs to pay attention to the video.
I just wish the pokemon were more random and fun instead of the same ones, it would have been cool having a Pokemon trainer not just be a starter trainer.

I'm a jigglypuff main. I honestly do think pokemon are really fun to play in smash (except for lucario). It just comes down to the meta. Pikachu and greninja are the only high tier pokemon, and are also the most popular. As a mostly casual player, i honestly think people don't play puff because she's bad. I play her because she's fun. Bassmage really shows the potential of puff's limited moveset, though.
The problem with ultimate they nerf all pokemon graninja have 10 times nerf

Honestly, I think that Smash does a better job than competitive doubles and especially singles at making Pokemon unique. With singles most Pokemon are defined almost entirely by their role within the team and one sweeper doesn't play significantly differently than another. In doubles you have more interesting interactions, but a lot of the most unique of the bunch don't usually see much success. Mind you, there are a lot of Pokemon and even if the majority do fit nicely into generic roles there are still plenty that create interesting and unique builds that keep that Pokemon's identity like Basculegion or Palofin that require the entire team to be built around their playstyles.

For what it's worth, for non competitive gameplay, the pokemon are enjoyable. The variety they bring to the game makes them a good addition, even if they are not the most competitive.

Pokémon is the single highest-grossing IP in history. Bigger than Star Wars, bigger than Mickey Mouse, and almost an order of magnitude bigger than Mario.
Anyways, if I were thinking about movesets with MockRock, I know that he is really keen on the idea of a non-starter Pokemon trainer. So what about this? Cynthia as a character, who uses 3 Pokémon from her league battles: Roserade, Garchomp, and… Lucario
Cynthia is probably the most (in)famous single trainer in the whole franchise, and unlike gym leaders or regular trainers you meet in the rest of the game, she has an interesting spread of types and bodies in her lineup.
Roserade/Lucario/Garchomp would give a lineup of 3 bipedal Pokemon with different size scale and distribution from the squirtle/ivysaur/charizard lineup. New typings to smash, like dragon and ground. New and distinctive silhouettes like Mario-sized lady with bouquets for arms, and land-shark with a jet engine for a face, but still with enough limbs and extremities to make a full move set of distinct attacks interesting and varied (sorry togekiss/spiritomb).
Lucario getting folded into a trio would also be a major bonus, because you could replace his down B, double-team, with the pokeball. You get rid of the worst implementation of the most overdone, unimaginative move type, a counter, and change it out for something massively more worthwhile.

Pokémon is not very well represented content wise, just take a look at Minecraft and Persona, only having one fighter each, but both having great play rates across all levels of the game due to the phenomenal quality of the representation.

Those "Can you beat pokemon with only x" videos also show how inpractical it actually is to put all eggs into one basket. Often times you end up with ridiculous over leveling and save stating while praying to RNGsus that the enemy accidentally misses all his attacks and picks the wrong moves while you chip the enemy down.

Anytime I play GSC, I just pick Totodile and solo the game with it. Feraligatr has the tools it needs to sweep the region easy.
The weird level curve and lack of modern day exp share in those games make raising six Pokemon tedious and a slog

That’s not always the case though. Most of these challenge runs ban evasion strategies and using items in battle because they can often trivialise the challenge. Part of the reason why pokemon has so much mass appeal is that even inexperienced players can beat the main campaign of most pokemon games with just a team of favourites. You can see this in how many advantages the player has over the AI in most cases.

Squirtle, Ivy, and Charizard should have been their own characters they honestly deserve that much.

All three of the characters are designed so that they're strong in some scenarios, but weak in others.
Squirtle is very fast with surprisingly strong combos, but his kill power is pathetic and he's the second lightest character in the game
Ivysaur has projectiles and some of the strongest aerials in the game, but suffers more against faster characters or those that can gimp him off stage
Charizard is very slow and heavy, having the same advantages and disadvantages as the other tanks
Their strengths and disadvantages are balanced out by you being able to choose which of the characters you want to play at any moment. They are intentionally weak in a lot more scenarios than other characters BECAUSE of the one single thing that makes Pokemon Trainer interesting and fun. The implication that having them all together is ruining their chances of each individually being special is bizarre seeing as Pokemon Trainer's gimmick makes him one of the most interesting and notable characters in the entire game, far more notable than any of the characters had they been individual options to play as.
If they were all three individual characters, none of them would be any higher than low B tier, but together as one they're a high tier for sure

yeah the problem is you can't really be carried by the pokemon they're all p meh and the few that are good aren't that easy or need at least some practice as opposed to chrom who you can just pick up easy.

When I started Smash Ultimate I would love to main a Pokemon because Pokemon was my favorite Nintendo franchise back then, but none of them became my main or secondaries.
So yeah this video definitely showed me why I picked other characters instead of most of the Pokemon characters.
