England is a place notably full of ordinary looking chaps that in truth are full to the brim with extraordinary talents, but are just too humble to crow about it.
The 70s music will put you on another planet that no one will understand unless you have a love of the 70s music. You don't need drugs or alcohol to appreciate the best music ever. God....take me back to the 70s and leave me there....I'll be just fine.
Radio also controlled by one giant company. At least in the US. So that meant that, instead of hundreds of DJs with a playlist and some freedom to choose a local band or a band they liked and wanted to play, the vast majority of DJs had to play the list the single corporate office gave them. We lost the soul of radio.
@@el34glo59 IMHO the 90s had far too many flashes in the pan who didn't even deserve that flash. And the vaunted "grunge" sound has not aged well at all to my ears. Much faster and better sounds in Metal, IMHO. But I will give respect to Primus and their work in the 90s. They are both original and good.
What crazy my friends is the downgrade in musical talent is across the board. I'm a 1964 model guy & do grew up with great Pop Rock bands like this - heard & enjoyed them all through about 1985. Then I transitioned largely to Christian Rock, Alternative scene. Guess what, the decline was over in that musical sub-culture as well...the 70-80-90 early 2000 had amazing Christian Rock artists but it's all declined & now you can't tell one song or artist from another. Uh, crass commercialization, centralized ownership, a fake diversity ethic that is actually "rank conformity" in drag, all of the above have killed the actually musical diversity & competition that allowed best most creative artists to rise. Now, we have "music by bureaucratic Fiat" Blah blah blah. Guess what I do ? Keep playing my Pop, Rock Alternative & Jesus Rock classics like they're Top 40s !
Good question. Guess they’ll have to wait until the wokesters at the HOF induct all their favourite two bit rappers like NWA, Puffy Combs, Eminem and Missy Elliott first? 😂
I saw them live in concert at Lloyd Nobel Center in Norman OK on May 1st 1979. It was a great show playing this song and all their other hits. Breakfast in America has been released the month prior and was a Huge success! I was 24 yrs yng.
I've seen several great shows at the Lloyd Noble over the years. I wish I could have seen Supertramp then but I was only in the 7th grade, and May 1st, 1979 was a Tuesday - a school day, so no Supertramp goodness for me. ha!
@@rickwheeler5496hi fellow OKie! 1st concert I saw was Three Dog Night in Tulsa @ age 11, in 1970. My dad dropped me and my friend off downtown and picked us up on same corner afterwards. Being the youngest of 4 kids with tired parents has its advantages! 😉
I when I was 18 I worked the night shift in a local factory. I had breakfast in America on my 8 track tape player and I loved it so much I’d listen to it every night on my way home. If ‘Take the long way home’ came on before I got home, no matter if it was 2 in the morning, I’d drive extra miles just to hear the song to its end. These guys were great musicians.
Newsflash Cara DICKler: you can be popular and successful and still be UNDERRATED: “not rated or valued highly enough.”… maybe SUPERTRAMP is constantly mentioned in your social circles as one of the greatest bands of the 70s but you can bet most do not. Maybe it’s you who shouldn’t use it Because it’s obvious you don’t know what it means..
Huh? They were absolutely massive in their era. Worldwide too. Everyone, I mean everyone I knew listened to them. They were in heavy rotation on FM, too. Maybe they don't get written about or mentioned much these days, but Good God, man, that was a half century ago. What does "underrated" even mean in a case like this?
Just that! They’re not mentioned nearly as much as they should given what they’ve contributed and achieved and I think thats largely because they stopped touring and recording years ago. But ask anyone today under the age of 35 what they think of Supertramp and they’ll say WHO?
@@systemsproceed248Christmas eve 2013, my two brothers and I listened to “Breakfast in America” as we took the older of my brothers to the VA to see if there was anything they could do for his non-small cell lung cancer. Indeed. The main effect Roger used for the solo is a Wah-wah pedal though, possibly with a bit of chorus or phaser. I‘ve seen him live and he definitely used a wah.
yup. Roger was such a wonderful writer, and a hugely successful singer, and yet it's astounding to hear/see him shred electric guitar! he was just a few years behind Hendrix in many ways.
I have noticed that with several other Midnight Special videos that have been posted to TH-cam. I am wondering if the people posting the videos replaced the soundtrack with the studio version. I noticed this with a posting of Prince's "I Wanna Be Your Lover", and, I believe with a posting of Starbuck's "Moonlight Feels Right". With the Starbuck song, someone else posted the same video with the live Midnight Special track, which was how I confirmed this.
@@mistermasterful3556 He didn't sing "Golden Years" on the MIdnight Special, so there is no way he said this. He appeared on The Midnight Special once, in 1973, and "Golden Years" came out 2 years later in 1975. FYI: "David Bowie appeared on The Midnight Special for a special episode titled "The 1980 Floor Show." This was a unique episode filmed over three days and aired on November 16, 1973. It was notable for being centered around a longform performance by a single artist-David Bowie himself-and it included various guest performances and elaborate staging. This episode was particularly memorable for its creative production and was Bowie's only appearance on the show."

@@russellgodding9568 You can find this online from sources. (the guy who produced the show was associated with some venues I played.) The Midnight Special was noted for featuring musical acts performing live, which was unusual since most television appearances during the era showed performers lip-synching to prerecorded music.
One of my favs of all-time. Was only 9 or 10 when it was released, but having come from a badly broken home in the 70s, the radio was essentially my only friend. Wish I were joking.. However, there was something in the melancholy of this voice/lyric/music that really spoke to me, and I will be forever grateful to this band for that. From here to eternity.
Then go on shining Shining like brand new Never look behind you And your troubles will be few Goodbye stranger, it's been nice Hope you find your paradise
This was 1 of my favorite songs amongst many of the 70's by Supertramp. If this was American Bandstand I would be sure this was lipsynched...but it wasn't! As a musician/singer myself last 4 decades (different name) I hated how some other TV shows didn't have artists perform Live. For those who weren't here in the 1970's...this is what REAL musicians & singers sound like! Once upon a time U had to be very talented & be able to play REAL instruments & REALLY sing & get up in front of a mic on TV or 1,000's in a concert & PROVE U were good! I did it...& many of my fellow musicians back then did it. I once turned down a Vegas casino offering LOTS of $$ to go out on stage & lip synch (mixed with Live like KISS last couple yrs) to not offend other acts who were less talented & I said "absolutely not"!! Autotune & computer fakery didn't exist back in the days of MIDNIGHT SPECIAL & that's why all these performances are so damn good! Turns out REAL musicians don't sound like boring lifeless computers trying to sound like ppl in the studio. Take a good look at these shows of the 70's bcuz this is was the best musicianship & music of all time!
I remember back in 1983 when I was only 11 years old Supertramp was invited to a German TV show and they accepted on the premise that they were allowed to actually play live, which was pretty uncommon. They were probably fed up with all the lip syncing. They played It‘s raining again and had to do Crazy as an encore because the audience went wild and demanded it. Good memories.
Big time, these guys are so exceptional that I have no problem believing the rumors that they are dropping occulted messages and spells in their art. Lyrics are just too creepy IMO

Roger moved to the town I grew up in, he played at a bar one night with a local band and my friend Annette and I and everyone had a blast dancing and laughing with him. Good days gone. Annette is in Heaven, Roger still lives there and I'm just having a good memory. Is that okay TH-cam? Lol.
Annette lives in your memories, I hope each one brings a smile.
England is a place notably full of ordinary looking chaps that in truth are full to the brim with extraordinary talents, but are just too humble to crow about it.
Fair question.
Loved that band absolutely brilliant music they made
The 70s music will put you on another planet that no one will understand unless you have a love of the 70s music. You don't need drugs or alcohol to appreciate the best music ever. God....take me back to the 70s and leave me there....I'll be just fine.
And I'll gladly join you!
Wow, like it was yesterday! How did we get from 1979 to 2023 so damn fast! 😢
To all those amazing memories and days we thought would last forever!❤
1979. I was 14 years old I had just started the 9th grade. I remember it like it was yesterday.
It's called nostalgia. And I OD on it all the time.
Well done......
Born in 1965, purchased this album in 1979! Still here, in my living-room...🙏🎶👍
Koolio!! I bought the cassette in 1984!!😊 Still have it too!!
60’s, 70’s, and 80’s had so much musical talent.
What the hell happened during the last two decades???
The internet, streaming, and zero attention span.
Radio also controlled by one giant company. At least in the US. So that meant that, instead of hundreds of DJs with a playlist and some freedom to choose a local band or a band they liked and wanted to play, the vast majority of DJs had to play the list the single corporate office gave them. We lost the soul of radio.
90s has the most talent I've seen since the late 60s-70s. After that, downhill
Now, we have "music by bureaucratic Fiat"
Blah blah blah.
Guess what I do ?
Keep playing my Pop, Rock Alternative & Jesus Rock classics like they're Top 40s !
How are they not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
Good question. Guess they’ll have to wait until the wokesters at the HOF induct all their favourite two bit rappers like NWA, Puffy Combs, Eminem and Missy Elliott first? 😂
So everything has to do with "WOKE". That is just puerile and stupid. The real reason is money. Follow the money, man.@@crazyralph6386
@@crazyralph6386It’s almost as good an honor NOT to be honored .
Next thing to come is the wokesters @ the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame will be inducting Hunter Biden
What a shame!
I loved this song when it first came out, and love it to this day, Supertramp is one of the greatest.
I was 14 in 79. Listening to this I am 14 again. And again. 🏆👏🏼
The soundtrack of your youth
E eu 😊tinha 17 na flor da idade.
I was 15. Supertramp BIA and Fleetwood Mac Rumours will stay with me forever.
me too !
In my head I am a teenager…until I walk in front of a mirror or feel pain in my knees and other joints…miss this band, my music and my youth.
I saw them live in concert at Lloyd Nobel Center in Norman OK on May 1st 1979. It was a great show playing this song and all their other hits. Breakfast in America has been released the month prior and was a Huge success! I was 24 yrs yng.
I was 16 yrs old and so do remember 'Breakfast in America' lol
I've seen several great shows at the Lloyd Noble over the years. I wish I could have seen Supertramp then but I was only in the 7th grade, and May 1st, 1979 was a Tuesday - a school day, so no Supertramp goodness for me. ha!
Omg,,,howdy neighbor! Saw them in Tulsa @ the Assembly Center April 30, 1979, they were so fantastic!
I saw them at the Lloyd Noble in ‘83.
Fuckin Eh! 🤘
Fck yeah bro! 🎉❤
Hands down the most UNDERRATED band of the 70s… this entire album was phenomenal…❤❤❤
Underrated bands do not sell 60 million albums. Stop using that word you don't know what it means.
‘Underrated’ term again? Underrated is way way “Overrated” in YT comments, here’s your 🏆
Newsflash Cara DICKler: you can be popular and successful and still be UNDERRATED: “not rated or valued highly enough.”… maybe SUPERTRAMP is constantly mentioned in your social circles as one of the greatest bands of the 70s but you can bet most do not.
I saw them in 1979 in Vancouver.I was lucky this was my first concert.Where has all this time gone.
I'm a man living his lateist days, but still needing them and their music...
@@systemsproceed248Christmas eve 2013, my two brothers and I listened to “Breakfast in America” as we took the older of my brothers to the VA to see if there was anything they could do for his non-small cell lung cancer. We lost him 28 days later. Supertramp always makes me think of him. Miss you, Billy ❤
Man to be alive during this time , partying in the ski lodges, the nostalgia....
That solo at the end with the flange is so tasty! RH was a really underrated guitarist.
Agree. It's a lesson in good taste.
Indeed. The main effect Roger used for the solo is a Wah-wah pedal though, possibly with a bit of chorus or phaser. I‘ve seen him live and he definitely used a wah.
Yes,a classic solo.
yup. Roger was such a wonderful writer, and a hugely successful singer, and yet it's astounding to hear/see him shred electric guitar! he was just a few years behind Hendrix in many ways.
@@danielfisch389yeah you can clearly hear it
This sounds like the album track not a live show. It even fades out at the exact time.
This is not live certainly!
ya David Bowie said he was pissed when midnight special made him lip sync golden years
@@mistermasterful3556 He didn't sing "Golden Years" on the MIdnight Special, so there is no way he said this.
@@HomeAtLast501 Wow. I guess you’re truly a die- hard Bowie fan! That’s some very detailed info. Thank you.
The best song of the album
I’m glad I grew up in the ‘60s and ‘70s. They were AMAZING 😊
Perfect rock song in all respects. Perfect lyrics, perfect melody, perfect complexity, all blending together to create an indescribable magic.
2024 and this is as fresh as when it came out. I only listen to 60’s , 70’s and 80’s music. Anything nowadays doesn’t qualify as music
Aww the childhood memories of staying up late to watch The Midnight Special and Wolfman Jack.
Probably saved me a lot of drunk driving tickets.
I want to go back. 😢
My Uncle is Rodger, just love everything Supertramp, saw them for the first time as a full band at 3 to 4 years old and I still remember it. But I have the utmost respect for Rick and without their very different styles Supertramp wouldn't have been amazing. One of the Greatest bands of all time. And very unique.
Rodger wrote such deep meaningful songs: School, Dreamer, Hide in Your Shell, long way home, etc etc -just brilliant body of work.
What a shame that with Rodger they couldn't continue or play as a guest with your uncle!!!!
Roger and Rick were like Peanut Butter and Jelly. Each okay on their own, but much better together!
My first LP bought at age 18 with my pocket money 1979, was so proud. excellent to this day.
You don't see bands like this anymore? I absolutely love Supertramp.❤❤❤❤❤
Fourty three years ago, I bought the cassette of Breakfast In American and would cruise in my car with their music blasting. I still have that cassette! Love their music.
good golly, was it that long ago? i made my own cassette from the LP, and it was in heavy rotation when my Dad would let borrow his car. and of course when i got my own car. what car were you driving with the 'Tramp cranked out?
A 1969 Ford Galaxy@@ericpottersadventuresinsou1146
So you were the other person who did that! Yeah it was great music to drive with. I can't believe it was that that long ago. Wow.
I was in the custom van with the quad speakers and my own cassette player right next door to your car, Pamela!!
Do you still have a tape player to play it with?
One of the BEST albums ever released.
Totally agree
From a time far , far, away when music was Great and "Live" nothing like it in 2024.... Thank You.. Supertramp and Thank You... Midnight Special...some things in life were just worth staying up... Late...For !!!Mr Dilly... definitely ...Approved !!👍🎸😎❤️
Yes, but this was not live, its the studio track, lip synched.
Supertramp were a British rock band that formed in London in 1970. They experienced their greatest global success in 1979 with their sixth album Breakfast in America.🎺🥁🎷🎸❤️
I turned 18 in 76 it was a awesome time to live best of my life.
If could have bottled it up! Kept it close😊
The last minutes of this song have always been the happiest 2 minutes of music in my life - Total jam session of good vibes - when radio stations would neglect to play it I never understood!!!
You needed to find an album rock station to listen to, top 40 always played the chopped up 3 minute singles
Yeah, this is the album cut. Complete mime job and lip sync. This isn't a live performance, unfortunately.
I hear you! I always wanted the band to jam out on that ending!!
yea im pretty familiar with the song and this is def lip synced, at least the instruments are , this must be 1979 or 1980, the earlier midnight special programs from 1972 etc had the bands playing live unlike this unfort
This was an incredible album. The fact that they totally do it justice live is amazing.
Unfortunately they are miming.
Then go on shining
Shining like brand new
Never look behind you
And your troubles will be few
Goodbye stranger, it's been nice
Hope you find your paradise
That outtro at the end is a masterpiece
The album Breakfast in America was probably the best album to come out in 1979. Every song was awesome.
The Wall might have something to say about that but yea a great album.
@jjjohnson68 The Wall album from Pink Floyd was released in 1978
Breakfast in America is one of those albums where it's impossible ti skip a Song!
Breakfast In America. Grammy winner for album of the year. Roger Hodgson is an amazing songwriter, musician, and performer.
This was written by Rick Davies.
This is definitely one of Rick's songs and this was in the period where they pretty much had stopped collaborating.
They dont make music like this anymore some of the best❤❤❤
I remember back in 1983 when I was only 11 years old Supertramp was invited to a German TV show and they accepted on the premise that they were allowed to actually play live, which was pretty uncommon. They were probably fed up with all the lip syncing. They played It‘s raining again and had to do Crazy as an encore because the audience went wild and demanded it. Good memories.
This song is definitely from another domain! Simply genius from start to finish! 👍
Big time, these guys are so exceptional that I have no problem believing the rumors that they are dropping occulted messages and spells in their art. Lyrics are just too creepy IMO
Well said!
I love the lyrics! The happy-go-lucky sound of it all. It’s pretty funny actually
I was 12 when this came out. One of the many classics from a better time in music
A masterpiece. Music was beautiful then.
The Wurlitzer electronic piano: the sound that defined Supertramp. And Supertramp was the sound that defined 1980 for me.
the 70's the high water mark for music
Except for a brief tidal wave when Limp Bisket played break stuff and kid rock played Bawitabaw at Woodstock 99.
I saw these guys in 1986, the opening act was the fix. Great show, thanks Ned for your musical influence
Fixx had some great tunes back in the day!
Certainly one of the most memorable guitar solo's of all time. What a song.
The piano break intro to the chorus is a stroke of genius, too. And yeah, the guitar outro is another.
One on rudy too
Hodgson is such an underrated electric guitarist
We listened to this album every year on our friend’s boat (Parker Dam, Colorado River) back in the day. Great memories 🎉
The falsetto vocals and the layering of vocals is very clever, makes the song even more memorable
Such incredible talent! They made my college life in the 1970s more fun. Thank you, Supertramp!
Can’t tell you how many great memories and feelings and nostalgia this conjures up. Ugh. Even hurts.
Supertramp's unique style is unsurpassed!
Grew up in the 70s.I remember theMidnight Special .
and Don Kirshner's Rock Concert
Still have SUPERTRAMP on ….. vinyl ! Now me 73 …….and still listening in 2024……. Unforgettable, what a band, their music….yes those were the days….so happy I was young in those days……and still able to enjoy listening today👏👏👏👏🎶🎶🙏
This band is so underrated & often overlooked. Such great musicians. So much pure talent.
They were and are good musicians but not underrated to me
People will rediscover how good this band was and still be listening in 2074 and beyond
Lol! You think humanity will still exist? Good luck!
A guy I worked with was horrified his teenagers discovered Supertramp. I was well pleased. Too bad The Midnight Special didn't record more performances.
Those guitar riffs at the end of this are just beautiful.
