You guys combined made the most sublime magic which millions of people like me still love and resonate to dacades later. Who wrote which songs, who sung lead vocals etc. doesn't matter to the fans. It's a team effort by all those involved and I reckon millions of people would love to see/hear Supertramp back together again before it's too late. Please bury any hatchets, forgive, forget and move on. We're all getting older, time is precious and we're a long time dead as Rudy would have said.
That was a great performance by that band. "Rudy" is also my favorite cut from The Crime Of The Century album, and it's the first one with the classic lineup of Rick, Roger, Doug, John and Bob (the only lineup that mattered though the first two Supertramp albums are good too). Everything from Crime Of The Century to Famous Last Words is great, and then Roger split due to the usual musical and personality differences. The post-Roger Supertramp stuff and Roger's solo stuff is pretty good, but neither one of them had ever recaptured the magic that they had as a band.
Hard to put into words how good this band was. Crime of the Century is one of the best albums in history. I hope they made a fortune - they sure deserve it.
I saw Supertramp in 1978 at The Amphitheater in Chicago. During this song they had a huge screen come up behind them and there was a video with a train running down the tracks. Pretty dramatic for its time. The sound was the best of the scores of concerts I attended back in my youth.
I saw them on the Famous Last Words tour in 83, Rogers last tour with them, and they were still using that bit of footage, very dramatic with the music. It's actually quite a well known bit of film if you are a train fan, of a train going from London to Brighton, obviously speeded up. It used to end at the exact point the middle section of the song ended. th-cam.com/video/LGUD4DvY3IY/w-d-xo.html&pp=ygUlbG9uZG9uIHRvIGJyaWdodG9uIHRyYWluIGluIDQgbWludXRlcw%3D%3D
Excellent clip. Finally I can appreciate all of Supertramp's instruments, even the bass (usually mixed down). And here you can also see Helliwell's keyboard contributions. Fabulous musicians.
I recall being a kid in Secondary school and Radio Luxembourg featuring the entire Crime Of The Century album interspersed with band interviews. It was the talk of the playground the next day!
Indeed, the word "underrated" is used properly in this comment. I don't know why there's so much doubt and sometimes hate towards Supertramp. They were more pop but had great musicianship and many good songs.
Supertramp was a great act. "Crime of the Century" was an LP that introduced me to the band. I saw them in Burlington, VT during their "Crisis? What Crisis?" promotional U.S.tour. They were amazing. Got caught with a lit joint by a fireman...."Put that cigarette out!", he screamed at me. I had to bogart it, much to the amusement of my so-called friends.......
That was brilliant. One guy played like three instruments beautifully. Hodgson doing double duty on lead guitar and sharing vocals. Classic version of Rudy from their breakthrough album
I loved the part where John Helliwell had just finished a solo while Roger was playing keyboards, and John just took over the notes and carried on playing the keyboard to allow Roger to play guitar. All of them contributed so much to this album that it remains one of my 25 best albums ever made (probably in top ten in reality.)
I saw them live as a kid and now my kids love them. If one realizes just how crappy equipment and miking was in the day, it is amazing how their sheer musicianship transcends everything
I actually doubt this is fully live, although I do think vocals are, and maybe some instruments. Definitely some guitar is not live, and the piano playing seems weird sometimes. Maybe it’s mostly live, I don’t know, but I’m not convinced everything you hear is being played live. One of my all time favourite bands
Supertramp Rudy Rick Davies Lead Vocals Accoustic piano Keyboards Roger Hodgson lead vocals Electric Guitar Synthesizer, keyboards John Helliwell Saxophone, clarinet, synthesizer, Keyboards Dougie Thompson Bass Guitar Bob Siebenberg Drums
Just can't get enough of Supertramp anybody else notice Roger Hodson puts his guitar pick in his mouth b4 playing keyboard which Mike Helliwell then takes over as Roger goes back to lead guitar? Live Concerts from St Marys College in London 1977 worth a look / Paris concert at what used to be an old meat market now Flats both worth a view. Pre Paris Live (Album)
Same show Old Grey Whistle Test 1974 the first track they played was Dreamer. Definitely one of my top 5 all time tracks. Look for Mike Helliwell playing wine glasses for a sound effect. Creative geniuses.
They were. While it's evident in several places, it's blatant at the 3:51 mark, where the guitar comes back in but Roger Hodgson hasn't yet transitioned back from the keyboard.
@@blutroniq I have to disagree.....the synth tone @4:30 is totally different from the studio version. Sometimes editing can be quite off.....perhaps that? It just seems a little "too precice" of a performance to even bother miming. They had the studio sound effects as well....maybe that transition had to be done that way? I can remember a David Gilmour performance that was recorded, seemed as though it may have been mimed .....until you analyzed the vibrato, and subtle inflections he was putting into his playing , and when you take into account that it was David Gilmour you have to wonder "why" would it be mimed so precise when he can obviously just do it himself.
The camera-work was nice. The sound was a little pushed-down. But my 64-year old ears filled in the missing stuff. Hearing's alright for them that's all there, hearing's alright...
Is Rick wearing a Rutgers (University in New Jersey) jacket? Their school colors are red. This is one of the few videos of this song that don't show the train film footage they usually show when performing this.
OUTSTANDING 👌 ❤
Beautiful as always with SUPERTRAMP! ❤
The best band of rock ever, thanks for this jewel.
The entire Crime of the Century album is good.
Just good..? Epic son.
50 years and still on top of my cd pile
my all time favourite group .
I really wish the Old Grey Whistle Test had all their old shows archived, I could watch it forever...
Every song is excellent in this album, but Rudy is the best. Thanks for sharing from Argentina.
Exactly

Incredible musicianship. And one of the greatest albums of the 70s

Sad but true. 😢
Lip sync, very well executed

One of the best bands of all time, thankyou SUPERTRAMP.
La mejor época de música del 73 al 85 ,y hermoso disfrute de mi vida ,🎉
Another fine performance and featured on Old Grey Whistle no doubt. Thank you for this fantastic release 💜 🎹 🔔 🎸
Awesome performance, what an amazing tight little band they were.
can't be bothered to comment apart they were the best band of the 70s. you either loved or hated them like marmite. I absolutely loved them❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
What an immensely talented bunch of musicians. Awesome!

I Saw them in Paris December 1979... Amazing show...and the Best Sound i've hear in concert until today!!

This is an absolute masterpiece. End of.
Esta cancion la escucho desde el año 1977 cuando yo era un niño hoy tengo 51 y me sigue gustando
I was brought up on breakfast in America but only now discovering crime of the century , brilliant
This is what you need to be listening too! Best album they created.
@@lisabrady8229Definitely. 👍
All due respect to BiA, but CotC is their magnus opus. A truly spectacular album. One of the best albums of all time. IMHO.
It's my favourite live concert of all time. They are just fantastic at Paris.!!!!!!
I recall being a kid in Secondary school and Radio Luxembourg featuring the entire Crime Of The Century album interspersed with band interviews.

One of the best bands that ever existed
Wow.....what a performance....just watched it three times in a row....so much talent....so much to enjoy... marvelous
bbb
fantastic
I loved this band.
The most UNDERRATED band in rock's history. Must be on top there along with Zeppelin, Floyd, the fab four, I'd add Genesis too.
Id go along with that.
Absolutely, along with Supertramp, you've named 4 of my favourite bands ever, I'd add the American quad 'Talking Heads' too.
Indeed, the word "underrated" is used properly in this comment. I don't know why there's so much doubt and sometimes hate towards Supertramp. They were more pop but had great musicianship and many good songs.

Hearing this for the first time, decades after the performance. Wow. I knew this was a great band, but what range and depth.
Great music and fabulous 70's hair.
Thats good stuff. Cheers, for thousand years. Thanks!
such talent in a few guys. Still listen to this wonderful music
