      I have a mid 2014 15" rMBP, at the time it was an obvious choice for me, but if I was buying again today, I'd probably be tempted by the XPS 15, now that the update with a 1050 was leaked.

      Looked at the MSI too. Checked it out at best buy, pretty durable feel. However, I read that a lot of people were getting 2 -3hr battery life, so am choosing between aero and razer blade.

      PartnersInCrimeGFX I mean, if I could, I'd immediately go for the blade due to its design. There's no competition. The XPS refresh is also another great one I'm waiting for 👌

      Xps 15 leaked it's same design with gtx 1050 and i7 7700hq which is 200mhz faster, gtx 1050 is only slightly faster than gtx 960m if you could get a deal on xps 15 previous year, you can go for that.

      Dave says in this review it has unquestionably the best keyboard, trackpad, speakers, CPU performance, and build quality, and brightest display (of second highest accuracy). Which are generally the most important aspects of a laptop. But a shitty price and battery life compared to last year's, and at the top of the line AMD"s GPU only reaches what Nvidia was doing a year ago, which is very weak compared to the 1060. So like nuance.

    • @worldhello1234

      "Dave says in this review it has unquestionably the best keyboard, trackpad, speakers, CPU performance, and build quality, and brightest display (of second highest accuracy)."
      ... and you believe it. :D Built quality is fit and finish. I bet he did not measure it. ;)
      "Which are generally the most important aspects of a laptop." I call that bullshit and claim it is number of IO ports, price to performance ratio and in general, integral quality.
      "So like nuance" So kiss my ass and don't try to prescripe people what their priorities are. =)

    Haters incoming, but to be honest there is not one single manufaturer that can keep up with the build quality of a macbook. No, not a single one. Apple ist just perfect in things like design and unique solutions (speaker f.e.) even tho they are fucking useless when it comes to things like gaming other than only editing or some shit like that.

    • @petterv6604
      @petterv6604 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    • @oceyho
      @oceyho 7 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      Because people are dumb as fuck. Everyone thinks that a laptop with such a high price (max spec MBP 4k+$) must have the top notch high end specs such as a 1060-1080 and all that shit, but they do not realize that some people do not want to game, also macbooks with max specs have one of the best editing and rendering times out there one the market due to the fact that it uses Apple OS and not poorly optimized windows.

    • @MiguelVergaraK
      @MiguelVergaraK 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Amen. Unfortunately, nothing comes close to Apple, it's not even a fair comparison. Plus the OS is way superior.

    • @bassmama
      @bassmama 7 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      A dude. he has videos on surface devices and called them the best device for college students. He doesnt have a bias against them. and the surface products are not competitors to 15 in mbp because they lack the processing power of quad core devices

    • @potiron1
      @potiron1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Pro 4 is competing with the 13 inch MacBook Pro instead of the 15 inch one imo, and maybe Surface Book with the performance dock can be compared with the 15 inch MBP, but personally I still feel like Surfaces are way different than other regular laptops, so it's kind of hard to do comparison.

    • @tylersimpson2974
      @tylersimpson2974 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The SB has half the CPU performance of any of these laptops, including the 15" MBP. But the 965M in the performance base is slightly more powerful than the AMD chips in the MBP 15", so it's a tough slot. In the past, dedicated graphics have been exclusive to high end CPUs and 14"+ displays.

    •  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also the Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book use dual core CPU, which place them more against MacBook Pro 13 inches.

    • @buccob
      @buccob 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I love his videos, but I partially agree with "A dude" here...
      Dismissing the Surface Book as a "college" product is inaccurate, specially since the laptop is marketed towards the professional segment.... If the Surface Pro 4 goes against the MacBook Pro 13... then the Surface Book goes against both the 13 and the 15 as an in-betweener.
      I recently got a first gen Surface Book, i7, 16, 512, dGPU and I am a professional creative, a Mechanical Engineer. I considered options like the ones on this video (Dell XPS, Asus UX501, etc) but ultimately decided for the less powered Surface Book because my use would required better mobility.
      I use it with CAD and Industrial 3D design software and even though it is a bit under-powered for large assemblies, the versatility more than makes up in my case. Clipboard mode lets me sketch and generate ideas that then will be design in detail, and the pen allows me to better communicate these ideas with people abroad.
      College students are generally on a budget, and the Surface Book does not fit that category (with exceptions)... It fits in the professional segment that requires a bit more flexibility than simply a workstation and have great productivity with its design. Performance is great, battery life is also great for what I do...
      Maybe the Surface Book would not fit in this video, but it definitely would have fit in the MacBook Pro 13 / Razer Stealth / XPS 13 comparison from weeks ago.....

  • @BrianWebb
    @BrianWebb 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have a variant of the Asus UX501 and love it...went with a matte, non-touch screen, 4GB DDR5 VRAM, 16GB RAM, and dual 128GB SSD/1TB spinning drive over the usual "VW" configuration. Apparently, this setup ("V") isn't available in NA...I picked it up near 光華 in Taipei. Love it.

    Honestly, and this might seem like not buying a car because it doesn't have a cup holder, I passed on the XPS entirely because of the location of the webcam. I may be shallow but if I'm doing a skype session or even an interview that seems like an awful awful angle.
    Would've rathered they just add a half inch to the top bezel and put the camera up there, they'd still have the infinity edge display in a fashion similar to the galaxy edge

      Old ass technology still has the best CPU (4:28), battery life (8hr vs nearest 6.5hr), speakers (besides the 2016 MBP), and trackpad (in most people's opinion better than the 2016, 2016 is just too big). You can get one of these for $1300 used these days without giving fucking apple a cent.

      lasse danielsen NO, you get good battery by being intelligent and using power efficient CPUs and GPUs and a power efficient OS.
      Putting a high end GPU on a laptop makes only sense if you just simply dont give a crap about battery performance. Otherwise you will end up building a BRICK for a laptop in order to deliver on both ends.

      i've a macbook and one of the best things it has is the design, i think that everybody would like to see windows based pc with the same or better build quality than the macbooks and once they started with ultrabooks line you say that you hate that? I was always waiting for the other brands to catch up the style thing and light with aluminum and not plastic, and when they started to do it people start hating. what do you want the old big fat plastic with horrible quality? no competition, and then allow apple to put (even) higher prices. Imagine how much would have cost the new macbook pro without a real alternative in terms on design and performance like the dell xps, surface book, asus zenbook etc. on the market.

    Just want to put my two cents in: I have the XPS 15, and it's pretty great and very upgradeable (for a laptop), though complex to order. What I mean is that MY model has two RAM slots (which are standard across the board), an M.2 NVMe-capable SSD slot, and also a 2.5" form factor SATA space. In order to get that SATA space though, you need to buy the model with the smaller 56WHr battery, rather than the 86Whr battery, and if you don't get the model with a hard drive, you need to order the special SATA data/power cable after the fact, as it doesn't come with the SSD-equipped option. Really confusing, to say the least

  • @MissMartianDCAU

    There's a reason why Macbooks are the best laptops in the market today. They have undisputedly the best build quality and attention to detail. If you looked at the video you'd notice that only the Macbooks plus the Razer Blade can be opened with one hand, all the other Windows laptops can't. It has a great screen (the brightest one) even though it isn't as colour accurate. Also, looking at even the inside of the laptops, the Macbooks look beautiful. Everything is put so well in together that it's so pleasing to the eye. For Windows laptops, the insides look ugly with all the different colour cables and green motherboards. The Macbooks also have the best trackpads and speakers, quietest fans, as well as the most powerful CPU's. It has the best battery life of all these laptops. Yes, Macbooks aren't perfect (the ports omg) but there's a reason why Apple charges a premium for them.

    • @casualpro4772
      @casualpro4772 7 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      Dan Cho Are you seriously defending Apple and saying that the Macbooks are the best laptops just for the looks? For tech, performance and optimization matter more than 90%. When you're playing a game/rendering a video, you're not going to care about how good it looks.

    • @jacobholm47
      @jacobholm47 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      the issue I have with the new Mac book is that I could buy a MSI gs43 phantom pro and build a desktop with an i7 1700k with GTX 1080 SLI... and the MSI gs43 is almost the same as the MacBook and has a better graphics card. the only thing I miss out on is the "premium quality"

    • @MissMartianDCAU
      @MissMartianDCAU 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      CasuAl Pro funny you mention performance and optimization, since Macbook are better than Windows at that too. Have you tried rendering a video in Final Cut Pro? It does wonders. The only thing Windows does better that you mentioned is gaming, but then again, Macs are not meant for gaming.

    • @jacobholm47
      @jacobholm47 7 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      ***** Mac OS is better optimized, but as someone who works in a technical field, they don't support 80% of the software I have to use. And they cost so much for for lower specs. The only reason you don't notice the performance difference is because as you said Mac OS is optimized extremely well, but as a result isn't nearly as versitile.

    Those price tags scare me. I got lucky and was able to get my 13 inch 2015 mbp for like $800 because of a price matching error at Best buy and a student discount. Plus through a promotion they gave me an ipad mini. I think it was an isolated scenario for me, but it was one of the few times where the Mac option was exactly what I wanted at the time and costed less than a windows machine. That being said, the 2016 Macbook "pro" took me out of the running out of owning one of the machines compared to a Windows laptop unfortunately.

    My last mac was the mid 2014 macbook pro, spec’d out. At the time it was a beast, everything about it was stunning. Exceeept, that it couldnt game. The best Ive pulled with it was CSGo on low settings. For editing its brilliant, and still is, but recently replaced it with an MSI GS63VR 7RF (please come up with new names lol), and its worlds ahead. It claims 100% sRGB but I find thats off, and once you tweak it a bit it makes you sad that Apple hasnt played catch up in any way, opting for design over beast mode. Which is great! The macbook pros are still the best looking laptops designed, only the Razer pros come close (and theyre essentially a similar thing), but comparing my MSI to a ‘17 MBP and it just leaps ahead with the 1060, upgradability and ports. The only thing I feel this is missing is a higher res panel and usb-c charging, but otherwise my poor macbook is already collecting dust.

    Warning about the ASUS Zenbook Pro, though: It advertises a screen resolution of 3840x2160 like the XPS, but it's actually a false-resolution Pentile display with half the total number of RGB dots. The XPS uses a true 4K screen which is MASSIVELY better than the false one in the ASUS -- which is rather grainy and effectively has fewer pixels than the Macbook Pro Retina display.

    I know he's talking about the razer blade and not the blade stealth, but on my blade stealth, most of the screws on the bottom panel popped off without me even messing with them. Soon, there simply will be no bottom panel, as they just keep popping off one by one when I am using it to do pretty standard computer tasks (maybe minecraft here or there). Otherwise, the build quality on the blade stealth is amazing, but I just thought I would point that little detail out about the blade stealth.

    I purchased the 14 inch Razer Blade with the GTX1060 and for the price, I wasn't impressed. I went through a few others before I ended up with the new XPS 15 with the GTX1050 and am really liking the machine. I was also able to benchmark it against the fully loaded 2016 Macbook pro in Cinebench and it won. It may not be as fast as the Razer but for 800 less, and over 1000 less than the Macbook, I find it hard to argue. And as you said Dave Lee, I was kinda sold by the display. The infinity edge and color accuracy is quite nice.

    Take a look at the Kaby Lake Lenovo Yoga 710, if you have time. I bought it a few weeks ago and I'm more than happy with it. Really, I think it's very underrated for its price (860€ here in Germany). The only problem I had were that the fans would turn on even when idle which was really annoying, but it was pretty easy to solve it (using Notebook Fancontrol). The build quality is also great, performance is also pretty good, I love the keyboard and DAMN those speakers blew my mind. I'm not an audiophile or something, so I can't speak for everyone I guess, but for me they were unexpectedly good. Battery life is also pretty good at 8h (recharges in 2h) and yeeeah... The only downside I see is that the touchscreen has no pen support, which might be a dealbreaker for some, not for me though :P
    It would be really nice, if you could review it, so I can hear your opinion on it and so other people who still search for a notebook could see it :D Yeah... that's it I guess, was a pretty long comment. Hope you read it anyways :D

    Sticking to my 2016 Razer Bade with 970m for now. I was really looking to swich back to MacOS, after using Windows primarily for the past year (after seven years of mostly using MacBooks). I still prefer MacOS, even though Windows has come along really well recently.
    The Razer Blade offers everything the 2016 MacBook should have offered. It's not perfect (no laptop is), but is the best allround package, especially if looks factor in. I love the Dell XPS on paper, but I've never really liked the looks of it.

    I gave the Dell XPS 13 a solid chance, but had a really bad experience. Here are my high-level criticisms:
    - Windows 10 is a living nightmare
    - Trackpad had trouble detecting 1 pixel movements for detail work (Windows problem?)
    - Lid is too clumsy to open (two handed, no cutout to get leverage, incorrect hinge tension)
    - Slanted base causes the laptop to "pop-a-wheelie" if you put pressure on it with your palms
    - 9350 model comes with standard charger, not USB-C.

    My environment is set up for macOS. I could convert to Windows but I don't want to as I am comfortably in the Apple ecosystem and I use several tools that work on iOS and macOS and I like that they have the same interface and work seamlessly. I also don't like some of the policies on Windows 10 and my work environment is Unix. My solution is to just stick with 2014 and 2015 MacBook Pros and hope that Apple gets its hardware act together in the next couple of year. I expect that 2014 and 2015 systems to be good for ten years - not the fastest or the most storage but the current performance is great for me. I only need the ability to drive two QHD displays.
