I had random shutdowns during stress testing and narrowed it down to a power delivery issue. It was my psu taking a dump on me, replaced it and the issue was gone. All thanks to this playlist for helping me narrow it down. Love this playlist
Also my gpu slot tab also is kind of broken and you right it still slots in, just you have the risk of your gpu slightly coming out of the slot if moving your rig

Friend had the very same issue very recently, but i told him, check temps. Turns out his Ryzen 5 3600 was running at 90+ as well on the stock AMD cooler. New cooler fixed the entire issue!

So, his cooler was defective? This never happened to me with AMD stock coolers.

I'm almost positive these components are from an ASUS pre-built PC, the G15CE-B11. I recognize it because I bought the same one back during the GPU shortages of late 2020-2021, it was basically the only way to get a 3080 at the time. BIOS screen showing "G15CE" confirmed it. That's why he's got a B560 paired with an i7-11700KF, with the inadequate CPU cooler and the mismatched RAM. The green stick ram is what came with the system originally. It was a great machine for me, but only after a case swap and CPU cooler upgrade. With the original case and CPU cooler it ran REALLY hot. The only fans in the original case were the one on this poor CPU cooler, and a 92mm exhaust fan in the back.

Only cablemanagement is a bit difficult without channels, but still better than most cases. It has an argb cable you need to connect on your board and an sata connector. If you do not have argb you can still use the case prefixed lighting. Connecting the ssd sata cables is an hassle if you do not know the easy way which is connect the cables first and then put the be quiet logo on.
It is such a beautiful case. I have the fx and my son has the dx version. Made a build for my cousin with the dx version aswell.
Btw. Connect one of the fans on channel 1 on the fan hub(if you have the fx) to control the case fan curves on your bios or software.
The bios version shown at 14:15 is 2.05, while the latest bios version shown on Asus's web site is 2.16. That and the mis-matched DDR4 is a likely source of stability issues. You may need to freeze-frame & at an increased screen resolution to view it, but the two memory speeds are identified as: 3200 MHz & 2400 MHz. However, the overall system memory is apparently overclocking the 2400 MHz speed memory to 3200 MHz speed: not good. Simply updating the bios firmware may have been enough to fix the issue, although still not a good idea to have mis-matched memory speeds installed.

You're most likely correct. I ran into similar issues (bios freezing and winload errors) on an X99 system a few weeks ago, and a BIOS update was what ended up fixing it.
Agree 3 Dimm 's - nogo...
while the general rule of thumb of mismatch ram being a no-no, that didn't appear to be the problem here. As originally once the half seated gpu was corrected it loaded and ran without any dimm errors. It wasn't until the new cpu cooler was installed that it started throwing dimm error and boot cycling issue presented as an issue.
@@anthonyrobu8633 Did Greg try booting with only 2x8GB of the (faster speed) original dimms? Maybe the better option would have been to use some other brand of CPU cooler that wouldn't interfere with those 2x DDR4 dimms installed.

I think we ,as PC builders, make building a PC sound super easy. We tend to be a more detailed bunch. People with little to no experience overlook the details required to get a PC running correctly and as efficiently as possible which leads to issues such as these. I think we need to be more adamant in explaining these details and making sure they understand them before attempting to build their own.
I got into PC building almost 2 years ago, and I think some pc builders make it sound too simple, at least that was my experience when I made my first build. I think it's not as difficult as a new builder might think it is, but it definitely isn't just plugging some things in and getting a working PC. I appreciate you noting that.
@@yetischmetti9529 Indeed. In principle, it is straightforward.. You are basically seating/connecting/plugging things in. But in reality it's not as simple and comes with caveats or possible headaches lol and certain ways to do things the right way. But like anything, Once you get used to it, it does become straightforward.. But still carries possible headaches.
@GregSalazar very nice of you tuning up this customer hitting everybase that you could'. Regarding the memory for the DDR4 i had a similar issue with my new custom prebuilt that i was using to re-learn as upgrading/swapping parts, when i had this mobo and dimms which work perfectly in another rig i gavce to a friend. I thought all was lost as i didn't know much and was in a boot loop after other errors, mine was a bad mem oclock which i dont bother with today aside from xmp.. but it looks very similar, I booted after a long cmos reset(battery out) then put in only one dimm in the slot booted with that after getting another mem light.. again same cl 16 ddr4 new worked graeat! Now if i do want to mess with it again i got new cl14 3600 mhz with a sexy dual bios/cmos button havin msi mobo but i think ill still just xmp/xpo lol. Thanks for the assist in learning over the last 2 years.

I want quieter fans, but they not daisy chainable and are pricey. Noctua is the quietest, but is too pricey
@@SkateClipsAndTips Silent Wings 4 PWM are the most quiet fans ive ever used. Try them.
@@SkateClipsAndTips get an arctic p12 pst (120mm) or p14 pst (140mm) 5 pack and you will love them, extremely quiet and move a bunch of air
@@luvingyouu I will concur. Arctic has the best bang for buck fans and great customer service, if something should go wrong with them. They're also daisy chainable.
@@luvingyouu I have 2 P14's in my system, love them, as my my 2 exhaust fans they Arctic f12 bionix fans and they have a hum to them at higher rpm's

i've gotten into the habit of when I upgrade parts I will sell the old parts and actually buy some lower end parts to have as backups. I bought a RX580 incase my 3080 craps out on me. Bought a 16gb kit of ddr4 incase I have issues with my 64gb kit. I have a Ryzen 2600 incase my 5900x has problems. The only thing I don't have replacements for is a mobo and psu and I'm planning on buying a cheap b450 mobo next week. For psu I'm not sure, maybe one of those cheap silverstone psus without any kind of energy rating.

G'day, You don't need a Cupboard full of components or spend $$$$ to have some extra hardware to test for most basic problems,
just a $10-$20 GPU like the XFX Greg uses, GT710 or even an old Quadro & the cheapest Green RAM Stick won't cost much or take up lots of storage space.
Then following Gregs Testing Procedures in a relative FoF video can get you sorted in many situations.
This one was really fun. You totally transformed the owner's PC! It looks amazing now!

Had an issue with my display out just turning off randomly. Did some troubleshooting that I learned from this series and with the help of the discord Found out that my top PCIE slot was toast. Was able to send it back for RMA and am currently waiting for my replacement. Thanks for everything.
The ram was trying to run at 3200 because of the order swap. Those green pcb stick couldn’t keep.

I've played around with mis-matched ddr4 kits and when using 2 sticks, A2 and B2 are the main slots, but if you run 4 sticks, A1 & B1 take the lead and determine the timings.
I have built shoddier PCs in my long winded history of being a nerd. This PC would be considered 'spiffy' by my standards something like, 10 years ago!
It's a lesson we ALL need to learn the hard way (though you definitely help) that you do not skimp on the PSU or the Case in any PC build. A bad case can ruin an otherwise golden PC and a bad PSU can... well... we've all experienced what bad power supplies do. If you haven't seen/dealt/suffered that side of things, GN has a wonderful video on some cheapo gigabyte models *exploding.*

Updating the BIOS may have helped memory compatibility also, but mixing kits is never advised anyway.

I think it took me actually making it _through_ engineering school to finally realize how little I truly knew. I was an arrogant hot-head when I was younger. Still far from perfect OFC, but learning every day :-)
@lazar well good job because this video was great. I've been watching your vids for a while but I am now finding myself watching the whole vid... that's something. I NEVER watch full IT vids except for Linus :). I actually started my career taking laptops, macbooks, imacs and pc's apart to diag them. Loved it but it's a dirty job. I cannot talk about what I had seen but let's just say the police were involved.
How comforting. I picked up a 6th generation HP rig and have gone through hours of testing with the same result of 3 long beeps, 2 short beeps. I've gone through all the support pages over at HP and have given up for the day. Hopefully something sticks tomorrow.
The 2 RAM kits were rated at different frequency shown on the bios at 14:24 (3200Mhz and 2400Mhz respectively) so maybe that was causing the instability after the case transplant?
yah if he applied XMP. it's probably using whichever XMP profile is in the primary slots. When you have mismatched kits you have to stick to the JEDEC speeds 2133Mhz. Or tune the ram manually to the lowest speed/timings supported by both kits.
That's quite possible. The rule back in the day when I did PC building and repair was like with like. Keep the same speed, CL, and if possible brand. You can mix size but speed and CL should be kept the same to minimize any potential issues. EDIT: Keep in mind that motherboards will set memory to the base set for that board. To get memory to the manufacturer's listed speed is actually an overclock. If one set is rated at 2400 and the other is rated to 3200, turning on XMP at a rated speed can cause instability with the lower rated set if you set it to that of the higher rated set. If mixing speed, set the speed of both sets to that of the lowest rated.
With that said, I have also seen issues like what Greg hinted at where it would cause the system to not boot, if you swapped one set of dimms to the other set of slots. Swapping the dimms back around would fix it. I've seen that happen even if you were following the rule I stated above. When possible, I just prefer to use 2 dimms that equal the total amount of memory wanted for the system (ie. if wanting 32gb get 16gbx2 set instead of 8gbx4). If that means spending a little more to upgrade down the road, so be it. I'd rather minimize potential headaches than worry about a few dollars in budget.
If I were to make a guess based solely on what is seen in the video, I'd say Greg was right and for whatever reason the motherboard wasn't happy about the memory slots being flipped. That, when combined with your observation, tells me that Greg was best off doing the dimm swap that he did in the end. It was the easiest fix with the least amount of headache involved.

This is what happened. You can see above the ram specs it shows 32gb of 3200mhz. Took the rates speed of the primary slot.
Greg did say it was hanging in bios. Maybe he was unable to change xmp.

greg you outright nearly gave this man a brand new pc i wish i lived near Florida so you could fix my pc but ty so much for what you do good man
I had this exact issue with my (then) brand new computer. 12600KF + RTX 3080. Random but consistent shutoffs in games, but I could run benchmarks for 3 hours without a single shutdown. Turned out to be the PSU's tight OCP tolerances were shutting down the computer from transient power spikes from the 3080. I was using an EVGA G5 850w PSU, and switched to a Seasonic Focus Platinum 1000w PSU. Solved my problems. I think benchmarks don't cause transient power spikes like playing games does, and therefore it's hard to diagnose or recreate with benchmarks.
That RAM issue is why you shouldn't mismatch RAM sticks. It can cause all kinds of compatibility issues. Even with XMP disabled where the sticks use the same JEDEC timings, only the primary timings are standardized by JEDEC. Sub-timings are not.
Yeah Ram testing can be a pain and time consuming better to just not mic different kits like this unless you know what you're doing and are prepared for pain 😂

I had the same issue with some bad ddr4. It would crash in the strangest way. First, the audio would get... odd, then it would crash completely. Swapped them out, and problem solved!

I had the same problem, in my case it was the Motherboard.
My PC is actually a pre build that I bought during the dark age of mining prices and it was significantly cheaper than building it myself.
I just sent it back after it crashed all the time, sometimes after just 5min in game or just on my homescreen and sometimes after up to 5hrs while gaming.
After it shut itself down it took like 5 attempts to turn it back on, it would just turn off right after hitting the power button.
The technician called me while he was troubleshooting my PC and he was like "I dont have any Problems with your rig, are you sure that.....nevermind it just turned of. I'll come back to you".
So they replaced the motherboard but I never got to know what the problem with it was
After seeing the mismatched RAM that was my first guess as to what was causing the issue. Then I saw that the RAM sticks were rated at different speeds. I think you were spot on with the new dimm slot order being the issue. It might have been trying to make the other RAM perform at higher frequencies than it could handle?

I saw the Trident Royal dims in the earlier B-role before you talked about ram issues and I was like Whaaaaaaat? LOL Some big upgrades for this rig in terms of cooling and ram.
I'm using the Dark Rock Pro4 with a AMD 3700x and 32 GD RAM since 2020. First Thing was RAM Clearance. No Bling Bling RAM. Low Profile and the Job is done. Corsair Vengeance LPX does the Trick. I'm using a Fractal Meshify C with solid Side Panels so no Blink Blink here.
Upgraded his cooler from a micro to a full on BBC. Very nice!
If you use two different 16 GB RAM Kits the XMP Settings used is usually that of the Kit that is placed where you normally put a single Kit. If that Kit has CL16 Setting but the 2nd Kit only works with max CL18 for example it will cause problems. On the other hand if the Kits are switched CL18 would be used on all the Kits and it should work fine. Different max Frequencies can cause this too of course.

I did some Fix or Flop myself.
Had a PC with a Ryzen 3600x and a GTX 1660ti with a Seasonic 650W PSU. All nice.
Upgraded the GPU to a 7900XTX, all nice. Upgraded the CPU to a Ryzen 5800X3D, random crashes while gaming?!
...you guessed it, the much faster CPU allowed the GPU to draw it's full 400W and therefore triggering the PSU 😂
Upgraded to a Corsair RMx1000, all perfect since then!
PSU is still peefectly fine and runs in my Wifes PC with said Ryzen 3600x and her new RX7900GRE ❤

I have had that exact same issue with RAM, although it was with DDR3. It took me forever to isolate the problem, but some BIOS chipsets just refuse to accept certain types of mismatched RAM. I BELIEVE that it is speed related, either it's trying to force a DIMM to run too fast or there's a very bad mismatch with the RAM specs and what the board is programmed to handle. Like, if the board can do 100x4 and 100x8, but the RAM is set for 100x6, then the board freaks out and just loops.
On a separate issue, yes, DUST BAD! I recently decided to clean a floor fan and I was AMAZED at the airflow difference after I removed the dust caked onto the leading edge of the fan blades. They are called BLADES for a reason it seems! Like a knife edge, fan blades "dulled" by dust caking on them cannot "cut" into the air properly anymore and therefore can't push air like they are supposed to. So, filters and regular cleaning people!
I love the gold memory chips! thats a first time for me! they must have been expensive! I was surprised to see the sloppy build... cross threaded thumb screws... seen that before on those cheap generic chassis... hate that! I have the same cooler issue in a intel build that has a LGA1366 socket.... I had to reorder the heatsink assembly because of the boise from the fan. unit was running on high all the time and was getting a CPU heat warning! didn't know if the board was damaged, or the CPU.... crazy! anyway, Nice Video Greg! keep up the great work!

I recall when those version of the Trident RAM was released. That was a super expensive set, and a nice up for helping correct a user created issue with mismatched sticks and not even attempting to pick something that looked like the same kit.
Ha ha - I love it! Start off with sensible, frugal, considered choices and end up with the parts cannon giving it full blast. Nice job.

SPD is taken from slot 0 for both banks. So the slow memory must be in slot 0 otherwise it may throw errors due to issues like default speed or timing. It's always best to use matched memory.
Broken motherboard traces seems to be the case here for the memory issues. There are many possible reason for broken traces:
1) Motherboard PCB under structural stress from bad mounting of components/heavy components like the CPU heatsink.
2) During removal/installation of memory when motherboard is in case.
3) The 24 pin motherboard power on motherboard is very hard to remove/install, causing more force required which may bend part of the motherboard more than usual.
I like what he said about overclocking. No longer will I spend hours in and out of the BIOS for 7 more frames.
I have seen this ram issue on older ryzen cpu (1000 or 2000 series) with mismatched kits. It would work in one order, completely unstable in the other one. Probably has to do with the RAM subtimings or something from the kit in the "main" memory channel.
The owner's DIMMs were originally white, green, white, green. It's really weird that having the two kits in the other channel caused boot looping. One would never guess it's something as minor as seeding RAM sticks in different memory channels than in the known working configuration. I'm wondering if the mounting pressure of the "old" CPU cooler wasn't sufficient for adequate heat transfer since it shot straight to throttling temps as soon as AIDA's stress test started. Wouldn't be the most outlandishly plausible cause in my mind. Also, it'd be really nice if the owner gave you your DDR4 kit back, since you don't have many to spare. Your generosity in these Fix or Flop videos is truely the most note worthy part of your personality that draws me to watch this serie with avid interest! Keep doing such an awesmazing job, Greg, the PC/tech communities need more folks like you!

yeah ive seen that same ram no boot issue due to order the way i fix it is to reset the cmos before adding in new ram or reordering the ram from experience older xeon and some ryzen cpus are pretty picky on what slot the memory is in
When I built my gaming rig a couple of years ago, I actually undervolted the Ryzen CPU and kept it at stock speed. You get more performance and bang for buck from a Gen4 M.2 NvME than overclocking and overheating your CPU, requiring a higher end cooling system.

I bought 4 sticks of DDR4 for my latest build. All identical, but packaged in couples. All it took was putting one stick from the one box with another from the other box on the same memory lane to not have post. Mismatched RAM is a hell of a thing!

I got same kind of issue because of the teamforce ram, not all mobo's like the teamforce ram, tho this seems like it dont like the order of the ram, thats speed related. In the end you did a very nice fix my friend. You are loved by many😊
