Honestly you couldn't have done anything differently. Sadly if you can't replicate the problem then you can't fix said problem. And to give the owner a new cooler was nice. Something you didn't have to do. I think it was the loose cables.

@@imnotallergic Go to all that trouble just to have Gregg find the loose plugs and give it back as delivered? Fewer logical jumps are required for it just to be a mistake- maybe they unplugged all those cables when they upgraded the GPU and they were never clipped (because you have to press really hard) and slowly worked loose.

I had this exact issue few weeks back when I move my 7900X build from an old PC case to a new one along with a new contact frame. I've check all the connections were correctly plugged but still couldn't boot until I reinstalled the CPU, cpu cooler and contact frame.
I swear it was correctly installed the first time but for some reason it isn't?

    • @guiorgy
      @guiorgy 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

@@hukesama8389One of the advantages of PGA sockets (like AM4) is that they don't require high even pressure. LGA on the other hand requires even pressure, otherwise some pins might not be making perfect contact resulting in anomalies. This can happen from both the contact frame not providing even pressure, and from the CPU cooler not being tightened evenly on all sides. That could very well have been it.

This specific situation must be SO FRUSTRATING, but for a viewer like me who does her own troubleshooting and repairs, it helps. Our minds often jump to the worst case scenario, and sometimes it's something as simple as a loose cable. Personally, I find the episodes where it's just something small or simple that causes the issue to be the most beneficial because it reminds me to check and double-check before I start ripping things out. Definitely not a flop - keep up the good work!

if I can run a 5950x and a rtx 3090 on a 600W psu, this Psu is plenty. And I know for a fact that psu is plenty. the max draw on that system is probably about 420 watts max.

people are being paranoid about PSUs these days. I have the same CPU and a 3070 Ti which draws quite a bit more power than the 3070, and the system doesn't go above 450W at the wall, that's before PSU losses, so the output power is probably just over 400W. But scaring people into thinking they need more powerful PSUs makes the manufacturers a lot of money, so they won't tell you how much you actually need.

As most comments suggest people say it's connection related but because user displayed it being turned on and off instantly at some point in the video it would indicate heat issue after some extensive use, which component is overheating though? Not sure why this channel doesn't invest in psu tester and check temps as well on psu, just focus on checking CPU and GPU, get a thermal camera? It's a literally swapping parts channel so it's at least he could do. I like his personality and videos but the troubleshooting is always so mid... "oh the cpu was bad so I swapped it" why don't you just try to repair it?

It's power related my personal opinion loose connection or home power strip, n as electronics engineer doing component level testing and repair, I'm pretty sure I'm on the money . As to swapping out parts that's the economics of fixing a pc , sure on high end item such as 40 series card I'll reball gpu, diagnose memory, but the hours to fault find a motherboard fault is just uneconomical for the end user when replacing motherboard would be cheaper for them. That said when I have spare time I regularly fully repair donor boards , and nearly 90% successfully but I wouldn't re sell as sure as it'll come back with something else, I just use em in office as test rigs.

Some of us used to game on consols that took cartridges (or god forbid even casette tapes!), they would lock up and fail to load games probably 50% of the time on a bad day. You litterally just had to breath on the cartridges and they would lock up, and the cassettes would constantly missread a bit, and you'd have to reset the machine, rewind the entire tape, and try again lol. 2 crashes a day is pure luxury to some folks who remeber them days haha.

Hi Greg. My first thought was he had a problem with his house power supply. Voltage and/or current fluctuations, service panel problems, circuit breaker(s), house wiring, or wall outlet. These potential problem areas could be checked using a multimeter or an expensive electrician. A great test would be to connect his PC to a UPS. This device will provide smooth, regulated power to his PC and also contains a built-in surge protector. Another, and the last way to diagnose the PC would be to move its components to a test bench. This makes working on the PC more accessible, especially when replacing components.

I always like to pause the video at the beginning after you or the owner describes the issue, and try to "guess" what's wrong with it. For this one, my first instinct was "something is shorting", however the fact that it could boot and play just fine but randomly wouldn't boot at times confused me as well. I also think the culprit was the 24-pin not being fully inserted. Moving the system could've moved the connector just enough so it wouldn't display the same issue. Just for a sanity check though, I would've tried to replicate the issue, by not fully inserting the 4-pin connector to various degrees, just to confirm my suspicion. But I digress. Great video as always Greg, thanks for learning with us!

I always appreciated the idea that you got rigs up and running and back to the user, rather than doing a bunch of pimp my rig type upgrades that resemble throwing money at problems and not really addressing the issue past replacing stuff till it stops. Makes the video a little more relatable, and keeps the focus on learning something, at least for me.

Extremely possible that the loose cables (both the 4 pin and the GPU 6 pin) were the culprit. System auto shutting off to protect itself. Always great to see the methods of which you go through for troubleshooting a variety of issues. It has been very helpful as a recent graduate in both IT and InfoSec, to add to my own toolbox of points of contention when troubleshooting any issues with a system. Keep up the great work.

I was in a similar position with this exactct case. A few years ago my wife bought 2 skytech prebuilts. They were not as high spec as what this one is. They were Ryzen 2600 with an A-320 motherboard and a GTX-1650. The first upgrade I did was replace the graphics cards with RTX-2060s. This is where I ran into the graphics cards running hot as they were so close to the power supply. My first thought was to do as you were saying and replace the case. But kids being kids and not understanding why I was showing them new cases, they wanted to keep theirs. So the next thing I did was remove the glass from the front panel and bought a set of 5 inexpensive pwm fans from Amazon for each tower. The skytech fans are molex and not able to vary airflow with temps. I did install all five fans which isn't ideal for pressure but made a huge difference combined with removing the front glass. I have bought a cut to fit dust filter setup to try on the front of each, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. This worked well for a while, and then a friend of mine needed systems for his kids. So i pulled the all of the components out of these and installed them into the Montech Air 100 case. The components work perfectly with great temps. When I then installed new components back into my kids' cases I used a SFX power supply to get it away from the GPU. They currently have The ryzen 5600 with a B550 and A RX6650XT. I also used a cheap $20 4 pipe air cooler at this time. This final configuration runs great in the original case with good temps. The only problem now is dust which I hope to solve with the cut to fit dust filter material.

Maybe should have checked for an overclock. I have a computer with a 3700X, and just using ASUS's base overclock features on a B550 board in bios led to uncomfortable temperatures. Using a tower cooler, I was in the 88-89°C range just like you showed with the BeQuiet cooler. The computer was stable at those temperatures though. I suspect that the issue was with the 4 pin not being plugged all the way in. Depending on how the machine was transported, the vibration may have been just enough to barely seat those pins to the point of contact with the motherboard header, which is why you didn't see any issue.

Replicating these issues are really hard, for example i have a friend who owns a 3070 and at idle is always at full mhz speed for some reason, and when we play it takes two sometimes he would get black screen on his monitor( but the pc is still on) turning on and off the monitor doesnt help, and his temps are fine and til this day we couldnt fix it by ourselves after trying a lot of different things.. on other side Glad to see the viewer happy! love these videos

Been building and upgrading desktop PCs from the days of math co-processors. And I confess to be baffled and confounded by times. I think the things you tried would have been high on my list as well. Cars and PCs are both much upset by poor power or grounding connections and I've found and fixed a lot of those over the last 50 years.

Honesty is good, Greg. Especially when the owner screwed so many things up. You shouldn't say he shouldn't be ashamed. He totally should be for not plugging in those power cables correctly. I think keeping the case was a good call. I bought a pre built, had heat issues, went to swap cases. But everything in it was made for that case. I needed to buy cable extensions, the new case, more fans, new motherboard(the one it came with was bios locked and wouldn’t let me change fan speeds, ram xmp profiles, limited connections for fans and usb,) ram upgrade , new aoi cpu cooler. It was taxing and stressful. And end result was great learned a lot about computers and love for building one. Not to mention my pc currently is great!

This is a comment for Fix or Flop S1:E1
Hey Greg! I know im a bit late. But just wanted to give some input from a person with the exact same problem. I recently got a b550-f rog strix and a ryzen 5 5600x. i knew every other part was fine. So it was a little easier to check. But i used bios flashback to update my bios and tried to run the pc. it did the exact same thing. But i cleared the cmos. Then it booted into bios, but when i exited bios no input. I did a RMA on my motherboard and cpu. But got the same exact problem. My fix was just to go back to the second latest bios version and i turned on without a problem.
    Love your videos!

My PC did the same thing, however I immediately found out it was my power strip. Pretty easy to figure out since it was making sparking noises. It was also the first thing I thought of when I saw the video. It's also the first thing people need to check if they have similar problems... check the outlet/power card/power surge/etc.

at first i thought the episode was going to end prematurely, but im glad that as you dug deeper you ended up finding small adjustments to make to improve the build overall!
It was more than likely the partially connected 4 pin, and a bios update might be needed for such an old CPU.
Either way, this episode was still very informative and educational!
    Thanks again, Greg!

If only I lived near you…. My old pc was randomly crashing during COD. Sometimes the game randomly crashes with an errror. Not one to monitor the temps, did not realize it was the issue. I replaced the water cooler with a fan cooler & fresh paste. In addition, I replaced the paste on the gpu. Also got a new case. Keep in mind this build was for 4xxx Intel chip when it was new. Before the temps were in the 90-100 range for both. Now they are only 70 max on heavy load. Big difference!
I’ve upgraded my system with 3070 graphics card so it can play all these new games with normal settings. I know the rest of the system is probably holding it back but it’s working for my needs. New builds are quite spendy for my needs. Hopefully I get a few more years out of this old beast. ;)

I remember helping my friend build his first PC over facetime. At the very end, I told him to do a double, triple check of all the wires to make sure everything's in and seated properly.
Of course, he didn't listen, and started panicking when the PC would boot but not show display. One of his GPU cables wasn't in all the way, like I told him to check.

As a 3700X owner myself, I've found that most B450 boards are quite judicious with vCore at stock settings, sometimes pumping more than 1.45V, when 1.375 to 1.39V is adequate. Adjusting the vCore would make a significant impact on CPU load temps, and possibly prolong the lifespan of the CPU as well.
