  • It's JEEP TIME!
This 2006 Jeep Commander has some annoying electrical issues: a non-functional blower motor, and flickering dash illumination.
Let's diagnose all the issues accurately, so we can load up the parts "sniper rifle" accordingly.
    Enjoy!

Super common issues. I had a 06 grand Cherokee, same issues with the lights flickering and also the hvac system. It’s very common on the Jeep forums as well. Great diagnostic.

Most guys would just replace the blower motor only to be surprised it won't work on a lower setting. I started watching scannerdanner and Eric the car guy channel in 2015 before finding you and Eric. And then Keith started his channel. Since then so many other great channels have opened our eyes to really good troubleshooting techniques. I appreciate all you guys who pick up the camera and teach while you work. It has encouraged me to tackle much more complicated electrical issues and not be afraid to test before replacing. Thank you Ivan.

I love watching your electrical testing and diagnosis. I am guessing after watching your video that a resistor regulates the amount of electricity that flows to the control unit. And each wire would carry a different amount of electricity so the car could operate the different fan speeds.

You forgot to mention it also needs a blower resistor pigtail connector. 😊

  • @davesage9190
    @davesage9190 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I fixed one of those resistor arrays once. The resistors were ok. That device on the top of the array is a thermal fuse and when the resistors get too hot (usually from insufficient air flow) the fuse opens up and kills the power. Obviously you have other issues as well (connector etc). But just thought I'd say for anyone that wants to fix it, the thermal fuses (temp value stamped on the side of the device) are available from China for less than a buck.
As usual a very thorough troubleshooting procedure.
    Thanks

    • @jkbrown5496
      @jkbrown5496 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I had a similar on a Honda Pilot rear blower power transistor. Only thing wrong was the thermal fuse. Exact match hard to find, ship time and you had to buy 5 or so. Easier to just change the module given the price off Amazon. Now I have a power transistor with a heat sink for use in other projects.

Well if it TELLS me not to repair it, I'm gonna repair it! 😁
Wow, that pin got HOT! Chernobyled, lol! 😂
Just did a similar one on a '04 Ram my neighbor owns. Could also hear the mode door actuator spinning away, doing nothing. Fan didn't work either. We put a resistor in there, and got the fan working again. He couldn't wait for me (needs his heat) so he went to another shop who told them they can't fix it, because it could be a module (???) ... which I doubt, because I could hear all the motors working when whatever mode was selected. They just weren't moving the doors - common issue, cheap plastic broke. Guess he went to the dealer with it. 🤯😬😳 Can't wait to see THAT bill!! My guess is close to $2k ...

Same thing has happened with my 2006 Jeep Liberty twice. As soon as I realize one of the speeds on the fan control does not work, I know to replace the blower motor resistor. I believe if I catch it early, it stops the problem from getting worse, and takes about 5 minutes to replace.

You should have pulled the blower motor out. I just replaced one on a 2015 sprinter that the bearings rusted, causing a hard to spin fan. I sprayed it with some whatever spray I had around, and spun it a few times, plugged it in and it works again. I still didn't bother fixing it, I just bought a new one, but as I am one of the people to drive that van, and I found the issue on a nice cold early morning, I wanted heat while I waited for the new part. I just told everyone until it was fixed, only run the fan on high. I figured it wasn't fixed enough to that I trust it not to burn the resistor pack, and those resistors were about $100. I checked locally for the fan, and those were about $250. crazy. Luckily rockauto is a lot cheaper, but the $100 resistor is from rock auto.

My 06 Commander’s speedometer, tachometer, blinkers, temp gauge, front windows, sun roof, back window switch, wipers, headlight control, power locks, gear indicator, radio all stopped working all at once and all the warning lights are on.
I changed the ignition switch and that didn’t fix it. I did notice some wires that were broken in the drivers door rubber boot and fixed them, still not working.
    All the fuses are good.
    Battery is good.
    Alternator is good.
The ground wires I found are good.
It does seem like it has to do with the door.
If you start the car with the door open, the warning lights on the cluster doesn’t illuminate and the blower motor doesn’t work, but once you close the door all the warning lights come on and the blower motor works.
    This is driving me crazy!
    Any ideas?
    Thank You!

transmission pans rusting through, evap hoses splitting, water pump seals leaking, radiator plugging and cracking, heater core plugging, rear window/gate electronics going nuts at random draining the battery, odd squeaking/front driveshaft rear CV bad(remove it and repair you say, sure as soon as you drop the exhaust or crossmember/trans/transfer case) they eat the small front cat's for breakfast, in which the heat shields also rust loose and rattle like mad.

Hey guys, Here show I fixed it. new commander owner here. I tried both ignition and stem switch. Wasn't that, blower resister new, wasn't that. It turned out to be the main computer plug located directly under the battery. I noticed it got worse when it rained. So I removed the battery and the battery holder. I opened up the connector and it was filled with water. Cleaned, wrapped in a plastic bag, and now all my gauges, turn signals works perfect

I have also noticed that the ac indicator light remains illuminated after the fan switch is turned off at 01:38 in the video, mine does the same. I believe that it should turn off with the fan switch. Am I correct on that point?

Can’t pull a codes but no check engine light. my darn obd port is corroded.
Starter and alternator are legit. Battery cranks @14 when running. 12-13 when off.
I just now found out the interior fuse panel had relays on the back. not sure how to tell if a relay is bad. I’ll research that next I did buy a pcm and had some spare relays of both type. I hope I just popped a circuit break located on back of the panel or front.

vertically mounted blower motors are just plain moronic. all i takes is for a drain to plug once and they fill with water. that rust on the resister pack is proof of that's what happened.

So a forty amp fuse is saved by a blown resistor pack genius wiring imagine a 40 amp fuse on a 15 amp house circuit the owner is lucky there was no electrical fire under the dash.

Good trace and diag. Order a new pigtail for the resistor ? Again, under engineered quality and this is proved a second time with the turn signal stalk being made of plastic that allow too much flex thus the tiny inside contacts move away from their counter parts. Plastic Plastic everywhere...please auto makers, high grade plastic or use another material that doesn't fall apart from age and use. That resistor is a common failure in lots of cars and trucks.

the only thing high grade is the cost of the junk, too many hands in the cookies jars wanting big payouts, the auto industries have all been run into the ground by greed(housing market also) ;)

The better you get the less you will need Pico and use simple tools.

Not necessarily. The ideal tool depends on the task at hand. Experience helps in picking the right tool and using it to get the best results 🙂

@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics Of all the videos on youtube troubleshooting,, you have the best logic sensors in your brain. The scope is a visual tool, but the brain is the logic tool. As the logic/visual paths connect in your mind the less you will need to rely on outside wave paths. However you will always need to know component location and schematics ( or documents) because other minds build their own particular codes and pathways. I learned this in construction... One one who understand the documents the best will always win, not because of being the smartest in the room, but because of better conceptual study habits before the task begins. Just saying,, been there done that...

Thank you for the thoughtful comment, Robert! Often the logic can be figured out just by looking at a diagram or a picture. That is my favorite part of diagnostics...figuring out hoe the system works!
