- Maya Angelou born Marguerite Annie Johnson April 4, 1928 - May 28, 2014) was an American poet, memoirist, and civil rights activist. She published seven autobiographies, three books of essays, several books of poetry, and is credited with a list of plays, movies, and television shows spanning over 50 years. She received dozens of awards and more than 50 honorary degrees. Angelou is best known for her series of seven autobiographies, which focus on her childhood and early adult experiences. The first, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1969), tells of her life up to the age of 17 and brought her international recognition and acclaim.
Maya Angelou is a testament to never giving up in life, because she never did!
I remember in one of her interviews with Oprah she wept when she said "God loves me so much". And that statement has changed my relationship with God. I realized how much I am loved by God.

She was down here in the south a couple of young white boys was following her through the airport teasing her. Probably saying unpleasant things as they walked behind her giggling. She stopped and took them aside and spoke to them. I don't know what she said. But from a distance they walked off humbled and wiping their eyes... She was so composed and continue on her way greeting on lookers with a smile, like she was gone love no matter what they say. Many years ago... REST IN THE POWER OF LOVE BEAUTIFUL
From a traumatic childhood, I made poor choices as I aged. Until I heard Maya's quote "I did then what I knew how to do. Now that I know better, I do better." This idea that we have skewed childhood logic and an unreasonable level of responsibility to what happened to us changed my life. I was able to see I was only a child dealing the best way I could. And in many ways I stayed a "child" until my 40's. I became an addiction treatment counselor and often paraphrased Maya's message as "You did what you knew how to do and when you knew better, you did better."

I had the privilege of hearing Ms. Angelou speak in person at my HBCU alma mater back in ‘96. I remember the assembly room, packed with college students, was so quiet that you could hear a pin drop. We hung on her every word! Her way of speaking is soothing to the soul. Her wisdom is classic and timeless. She will go down as one the the greatest writers and orators of all time. 🕊

I saw her at UC Irvine as a senior in 2001... most AMAZING experience ever and Ive been obsessed with her ever since. I just found out my neighbor who grew up in the south and now teaches music in Los Angeles, played Music WITH HER! Like OMG Dude YOU WIN, Im so jealous! Im finishing my English credential right now, and I vow to never let this amazing woman's works and all she did for not just black women, but ALL WOMEN, be forgotten.

I once hugged a teacher who had constantly been bullying me at work and she weepers like a baby.She carried on with her abusive behavior and I just let her be and changed my perspective of her.

She put her arm around Tupac and gave him a loving response which he needed at that time.

The sad part is that the words are apart of the video. Edit the video and erase the words or please correct them because the wording is awful.

One thing she said that I still consider daily is; ‘people will usually forget what you say, but they’ll never forget how you made them feel’. It’s a great quote for a world over involved in semantics. It’s a lesson I’m learning constantly. Make people feel good about themselves from the opening interactions with them. It’s HOW you say things that affects others. Not necessarily the verbiage itself.
What a lady. A legend. What she did for humanity and peoples souls isn’t quantifiable. Thank you. Rest easy.

As a teacher, I played inspirational speeches to my 7th graders of Angelou and Michelle Obama. Nearly all preferred Angelou. I think it had something to do with the quality of her voice and aged wisdom. I like both individuals very much.

Frank b, Godiss Maya has a charismatic charm and enchantment that few possess. The first time I heard her, I was preparing for work and as a flight attendant; to be late was unacceptable. I literally took the tv into the bath and propped it up to not miss a word. WHO is this woman... I had to know! The eloquence with which she spoke was spellbinding. Yes, indeed!
@Frank I would say almost 💯the attraction /pull towards Angelou has to do with the Love of God in her heart. People who have this Love, it radiates through them. They are ‘different’ and attract people like a magnet 🧲

I didn't quite experience what she did, but when I read her book in middle school I realized I wasn't alone, and I drew strength, solace, and fortitude from that. So many years later, something happened and I'm told I'm too quiet. I have spent the weeks since a very loud fourth of july writing a poem about how I choose to be quiet to heal, to be still to see the beauty in the world past all the color and noise and even in all my writing I thought - I there's something wrong with me. I should be stronger than this, I should still talk and laugh and loudly. Dr. Maya Angelou - once again your words heal me. I didn't trust my soul to know how to repair myself, but my soul knows best. I don't need to be loud, it's enough to enjoy the quiet beauty of the world that's so much more beautiful once you've had to build yourself back up again.

Don't dwell on things from the past, don't stress on your future. Just live your life, because you only get one. Do whatever makes you happy, not what other people want from you. I love listening to Dr. Angelou after my daily prayers. Then, I'm in the correct headspace to give her work spiritual presence it requires to truly be moved or inspired. I was abused by a family member. He tried to rape me we were both teenagers. I was able to draw strength and defend myself. Maya's angelous courage in I know why the caged bird sings is what allowed me to do so. I am grateful to her for encouraging poetry which allowed me to believe that I would one day be a butterfly. I was socially awkward as a child and I read books for solace. She was my favorite author.
In my life I learned that i was not worthy, yet my unending desire to please drove my soul. This video gave me so much hope and belief that I too, like this iconic woman can make a positive impact to many. I cant stop cryin, it opened a door for me that is positive and inspirational. I'm 63, and I vow to read her books, and her example has woken this sleeping giant within me. This is an epiphany for me. Father God thank you for loving us, and if i could inspire just one person as this woman did for me, I did the most worthy thing in my life. Thank you sweet soul for saving me.
